January:
Madness and The Style Council are among the 5000 who sign a petition
against the Youth Training Scheme and march to Downing Street.
The hand over of the petition was broadcast on the Nine O'Clock
News.
January 2nd: Manchester
Suggs and Carl present the first episode of this year's Oxford
Road Shows. They announce a competition to meet Madness in a
later episode in association with No.1 magazine.
January 8th: Rehearsing and writing in Solid Light studios.
January 12th: Helsinki?
January 14th: Rehearsals and writing move to Hotown studios.
January 21st: A video for Starvation is filmed in Madness's Liquidator studio.
January 28th: London Bull & Gate
A packed audience came to see a band called The Wayfarers who were supposed to be premiering their new album Lost in the Museum [this spoof album title is aimed at Dave Robinson who in the final days at Stiff when referring to Madness said "I'm running a record company not a museum"] but on stage were none other than Madness premiering their new songs which they had been rehearsing rigourusly and were about to start recording. They then continue the writing, rehearsing and recording sessions for Mad Not Mad which will last till June.

February:
The Fink Brothers single is released [Zarjazz JAZZ 2] Highest chart position 50. Weeks in chart 4. Suggs and Carl's new alter egos The Fink Brothers [Angel and Ratty] released the hip hop Mutants In Megacity One. The song is based on the 2000 AD comic character Judge Dredd and his enemies the Fink Brothers.
February 25th: Zarjazz releases the Starvation single by Starvation [Zarjazz JAZZ 3] Highest position 33. Weeks in chart 6.
Unfortunately some DJs considered the track 'too ethnic' and the record hardly gets any airplay or publicity. It was overshadowed by Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid which had just topped the Christmas charts in a blaze of media attention. Starvation's highest position was 33 despite rave reviews from the press.
March 4th: Madness start recording Mad not Mad in Air studios Oxford Street.
March 22nd: Manchester Oxford Road.
Two lucky lucky girls had won a competition to meet Madness and joined them on the show. Afterwards they were taken for a Chinese meal followed by a trip to the Hacienda Club.
March 25th: Air studios till the end of the month.
April 1st: Madness have now moved to Langer and Winstanley's Westside studios and are still recording Mad Not Mad. This continues until the 25th.
May 21st: Madness shoot the Mad not Mad album cover with photographer Anton Corjbin.
June 29th: Madness open the Brecknock School fete.
July 8th: Recording B sides.
July 10th: Madness are filmed performing Yesterday's Men in front of a fairground at Alton Towers for the Hold Tight TV show.
July 29th: Madness audition new keyboard players at the Liquidator studio. From a list of four possible candidates they select two very lucky boys, Terry Disley [who went to school with Chrissy Boy] on piano and Seamus Beaghen on organ and samples.

August 1st: Madness film the Yesterday's Men video in the Brixton Academy.
August 19th: Madness perform Yesterday's Men on the Wogan TV show.
Yesterday's Men released [Zarjazz JAZZ 5]
Highest position 18. Weeks in chart 7.
August 22nd: Manchester
Madness perform Yesterday's Men for the No Limits TV show.
August 26th: Madness appear on TV AM.
August 27th: Madness fly to Germany to do some TV shows and press.
August 30th: Madness open a recreation Park in Finsbury Park for the GLC.
September 4th: Madness perform Yesterday's Men on Top of The Pops.
September 9th: Madness travel to Manchester to film Yesterday's Men for the Cheggers plays Pop TV show.
September 11th: Holland
Madness perform Yesterday's Men and Embarrassment on the Countdown TV show. Mike Barson turns up to see his old compadres in action. After the show the band all goes out for a Mexican meal.
September 12th: Madness begin rehearsals for the Mad not Mad tour in E-Zee hire studios. This is to to run through a few things with the assorted backing singers and musicians who will be joining them on the tour.
September 14th: Madness wanted to use a Diane Arbus picture for the cover of Uncle Sam. It portrayed a particularly gung ho young American chap wearing a boater, bow tie and a badge saying Bomb Hanoi. However they were refused permission so recreated the photo using new recruit Seamus Beaghen. He also appeared in the intro of the video as a newsreader.
September 16th: Madness perform Yesterday's Men on Top of The Pops.
September 23rd: Cork
Madness play at the Castlebar Festival.
September 26th: Madness film the Uncle Sam video in a suburban house and on an amphibious vehicle which they then drive into the Thames.
September 30th: Mad Not Mad album released [Zarjazz JZLP-1] Highest position 16.
October 5th: Madness sign copies of Mad Not Mad in the Virgin megastore.
October 14th: Uncle Sam is released [Zarjazz JAZZ 7] Highest chart position 21. Weeks in chart 11.
October 19th: Madness appear on the Saturday Superstore TV show. Frankie Howerd is on the show and he attempts to set a record for sticking stamps to individual envelopes. In 4 minutes he managed 72 thereby licking his opponent Chrissy Boy.
October 22nd: London
Madness film Uncle Sam at the Hippodrome for Children in Need.

The Mad not Mad tour then begins. This is the band's first
UK tour since 1983. Madness have taken along three backing
singers Jimmy Helms, Jimmy Thomas, and Lorenzo Johnson to
augment the backing vocals that were on the Mad Not Mad album.
They also have Seamus Beahghen and Terry Disley on keyboards
and Bosco De Oliveria on percussion. Thommo is taking a trampoline
on tour and one of the road crew has sprayed "what is this - a tour or a circus?" on the dressing room wall in glitter paint. Despite a top level enquiry the culprit has never been caught. But with the new innovations in DNA technology this may soon be possible. Production rehearsals for the tour begin at Chippenham Goldiggers. The support band is The Friday Club.
