Hello. Chrissy Boy here, back where I belong.
Send me a question and I’ll answer it.
Within reason. Nothing about “when's the next gig” please. That’s in the bit called “gigs” on the main page at the top. If you want to just say hello to any of us, please feel free to post a comment.
Thanks CB x

The Sun

Dear Chris,
great to see you put in such a good turn on Later with Jools Holland. I was saying to the wife before it started how I hoped that if you did one of the older songs, it might be the Sun and the Rain. It's one of my top 5 Madness songs, and yet I've never seen you do it on TV, and for some strange reason, you never hear it on the radio. I was well pleased when you played that one. Who gets to choose which songs you play? Actually, the radio really annoys me at the moment. You've got a cracking new album out, yet whenever they play a Madness song, it's nearly always Our House. It was just the same when the last two albums came out, and even with NW5. What are they playing at?
Graham W

Dear Graham
Thanks. I don't know -but the royalties are nice. The new album isn't really out yet. You should hear Dust Devil a bit I hope.
CB
Just saying hi

Agreed that Australian security generally seem to have a problem with bugs in certain orifices. Perhaps there is an operation for that nowdays?
Anyhoo...also agreed that you really do need to come to Australia and do a pub/club tour such as the 1986 tour ie: smaller crowds. May I suggest several gigs on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland? Consider it a working holiday or something like that. And this time I will most definitely not get so intoxicated that I don't remember a lot of it (one of the biggest regrets of my life that was).

I got nicked there once [Brisbane] with Thommo for crossing a totally deserted street at 3am . They popped out of nowhere. OK we fell on top of the Police car...Where we drinking with you?
CB
Dust Devil video

I'm a little disappointed, not with the vid to Dust Devil, but the fact that some of the Nutty's out there don't like it and have been negative about it.

I think the vid has a relevant subject matter with both Winstone and Allen doing you proud, especially the former.

I don't think a song like Dust Devil requires a Nutty video like those during your early days, it would take something away from the quality of the song itself, in my opinion.

Is it not enough that you have gone back to your roots song wise, we don't need the fun videos with this album, anyway, Thommo's knees wouldn't stand the abuse!
Paul Bridges

Dear Paul
Thanks for the support. It does seem unpopular though. The next one will have us all in and loads of gags. I am writing them already.

Fond memories

Hi CB,
My very first live concert was you lot at Portsmouth Guildhall in about 1980. I was a huge fan then, and my kids love the DVDs now, they call it the silly songs!
Anyway, I am travelling from NE Scotland to the New Forest to see you at Broadlands in July, and really looking forward to it.
Cheers,
Karen

Well so am I. That makes two of us. Have a great time.

Unknown chicken

Hi Chris!

Me and a friend were discussing about who is the chicken (it was supposed to be a bird, but it looks like a chicken...) in It Must Be Love video. If you tell us who is, we'll be very happy.

Say hello to Suggs and Lee.

Bye! Javi

Dear Javi

Greetings from Brazil

Hey guys!!! In 2007 when I was on vacations in my bouyfriend's house in Liverpool I saw your musics ( dvd ) and I loved it, before this time I didn't know nothing about this great Band called Madness!!!! Then from there until now I am your fan, brasilian fan!!! My noivo is English and me Brasiliane, next year we will be marry, and some of your musics will play in our marriage's party :) In July 2009 I will go on vacation to UK and I talked to my noivo that I would love see Madness singing. I don't know very well where we will watch your shows, if London or others places in UK, but we will go :) Please, I would like to know if The Madness has plans to realize show here in Brazil!!!! Beijos from Brazil to you

Set

Hi Chrissy
Was just wondering ,with all this fantastic new material and the huge amount of classics , can we expect a Springsteen like 3 hour set at madstock. Now that would be a show mate.
Oh and by the way I saw the specials this week, they were awsome , you should blah a ticket for brixton. Don't worry nobody will tell jerry!
Big Dave

Dear Dave
Bruce Ha! We can do that! It would take us three gigs though. Well two and a half...The Specials I will sneak into.
CB
The Blockheads

Hi Chris, would there be any room at Madstock for that up and coming band of youngsters known as The Blockheads?
Joe

Dear Joe
Yes I'd love it myself. They have a quite good new album out I hear...
CB

Jool's & such!

1. I loved you guys on the Jool's Holland show, you all looked very handsome :D
2. Where's Chas' Basement gone?!
3. Johnny the horse... Are you playing it at the Gatcombe Park gig? Cyahh in 2 months and 1 day! xx Leah

Dear Leah
1. Thanks - it was the BBC make up dept. really.
2. Chas is in the M section.
3. I doubt it.
CB
Jools Holland

Was that Helen O'Hara in your string section last night - if it was she appeared to have a long red wig on (I used to be in a band with her and wondered if she was still playing)
Gavin King

Dear Gavin
No. Well I don't think so.
CB
Smaller Venues?

Hi CB. Been a fan since '79 and I can honestly say that in my opinion you're sounding better and "tighter" than ever. Absolutely superb performance on Jools.

I was wondering if you'd ever considered touring at smaller venues? Maybe covering a larger area of Britain but at smaller arenas/theatres/halls? I know Oasis did it to celebrate their 10th Anniversary so I wondered if you guys might do it for your 30th (Oasis came to Hull hint, hint, wink, wink).

Thanks so much too for answering my previous questions, the time you give back to the fans is fantastic and greatly appreciated.

Jeetee.

Dear Jeetee
Thanks. smaller gigs not at the moment. We only do buses.Top deck.

Tarzan's Nuts!

Just seen the video of 'Tarzan's Nuts' live in Australia on MadTube! Please, please, please keep this in the set for Madstock. Falling that 'A Day On The Town' would surely be an appropriate tune for the day.

Any chance of Madness doing a 30th anniversary of 'One Step Beyond...' gig and playing the full album live. Loads of people would love to see that!
Liam

Dear Liam
Nuts should be in the set I think. A One Step concert also could be possible.
CB
Camden Fri night

You guys rocked Inverness Street last night! Unfortunately, I only found out about it at the last minute due to working away but I watched from the other side of the bus (and was grateful that you all turned round at some point!). Met Chas outside, he's much shorter than I imagined!
Anyway, rock on, hoping to get to Victoria Park :) Charlie

Dear Charlie Thanks. Chas is two foot taller than me.
CB
Great Your Back

Hi CB

Great you got your message board back, I've really missed you.
Enjoyed the O2 gig last December, another 4 half hour journey, but you guys are worth travelling to see. You said a lot more and what you usually do, great to see and hear.
I'm really upset that I can't make Madstock as I will be on holiday in Cyprus then, although I will coming to Stroud.
Tell Woody I said good luck in the London marathon tomorrow and perhaps you could donate the 10 missing from my liberty of Norton Folgate box set for me!!!

Take Care my Friend

Anthony

Dear Anthony
Thanks.Of course I will I gave Woody some money already.
CB
Cart before the horse.

I know the new single isn't even out yet (good choice, clever idea for video and excellent exposure on Jool, by the way) but, as everyone else is putting the cart before the horse I thought I'd suggest my idea for a further single. 'On the Town'. I think it's a great song anyway but, what with the 30th Anniversary of 2-Tone and all that, you would appear to missing a publicity trick if you didn't make the most of a duet witha former stable-mate. Don't you think? I've nothing against Lil Allen, Gwen Stefani etc but Rhoda is great and she's perfect for that song.
Tthe big E

Dear Big E
I could not agree more if I tried. So I won't.
Thanks CB
Crystal Palace Bowl c 1981?

Hey Chris
I wonder if you can help me with a vague memory. I was about 12, BIG Madness fan, Mum took me to Crystal Palalce Bowl to see you. I think Ultravox and a few others were there..Depeche Mode maybe?
People were swimming over to the stage and chucking water at you all and I think you had to stop and tell them to pack it in incase you got electricuted or something.
I got all your autographs on a poster that day, except Suggs who was nowhere to be seen, BUT my Mum (to my immense shame)had to get one of your roadies to fetch Suggs outside because he was backstage and in a bad mood and sulking about something. Anyway, nobody messes with my Mum. Roadie went and got Suggs, she demanded to know what he was sulking about and got my autograph then gave him a telling off (he said "Sorry Mum") I nearly died. Fair play to her though.

Anyway, just wanted to know exactly what year it was, is '81 right? Googled it but can't find anything. Did I imagine it all???

Looking forward to Madstock. Got my gold circle tickets!
LouB

Dear LouB
I remember that gig. Tenpole Tudor was on. He was brilliant. He had a fishing rod and he had attached an old boot to the line which he fished from the lake. I also remember a kid perched on a pole. Thommo threw him a Madness t shirt in such a way that he had to jump off the pole to get it, thus getting soaked. Good old Thommo.I just did a search using Tenpole Tudor + Crystal Palace and also found this on Madness Central:

June 13th 1981 - LONDON: Crystal Palace Concert Bowl - Garden Party Festival

Attendance: 7,000 (capacity; 15,000)

Line-up: Our Daughters' Wedding, Tenpole Tudor, Polecats, Newtown Neurotics, Ultravox, Madness

In good tradition, Madness end their world tour with a homecoming concert. But what should've been a finale becomes a slight disappointment. The £8.50 ticket-price and tight security put off many festival goers with the field nearly half full. Bad reviews appear in the press suggesting that Madness aren't a festival band. They spend the next few weeks writing new songs before flying to Nassau to work on their third album at the Compass Point Studios.

There you have it. I think bad tickets sales, plus the fact that some our fans were drunk and very badly behaved, is why Suggs was in an [uncharacteristically] foul mood.
CB
New Album

Chris
just wanted to inform you that I made an annoucement on the dutch radio about the new album. I requested something from Madness via sms, they called me back, I got my 20 seconds of fame and requested something from Liberty of Norton Folgate. They played 'Baggy Trousers'. It was 3fm.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Andre

Dear Andre
Is Baggy trousers on it over there? ha ha Thanks for trying anyway. I don't think we have sorted out a deal in Holland yet.
CB
Jools Holland

Hello chaps... just wanted to say how brilliant you sounded on Jools Holland this week. Dust Devil sounded amazing and it's now constantly going round in my head!! Nice one lads. Keep up the top work.

Band play

Dear Mr. CB
As can be heard on Overture of TLONF and also at the end of Africa, the brass and string band plays the main title theme, is there any chance to listen to the full version by "the band"?? May be it can make it to the M section...
All the Best (yes the box set made to argentina!!)
Mr. Paul B

Dear Paul
Sadly the quality of the recording was not good enough to use. I am so happy the box got to you eventually.
CB
Brilliant

Hi CB, Just watching Madness on friday show had a great idea for an album title for the next album or greatest hits "Keep `em coming" that came about as Madboo and I was talking about each song. After the su & the rain I said as suggs usually says "Have we got time for another" then I said "Keep `em coming" Brilliant performances from you all. Roll on when The Norton folgate film comes out on dvd or any channel on tv that doesn`t have adverts
Have a good nutty summer.

Dear Tony
I will bear that in mind.....
CB
Lilly Allen

Hello CB,
Dust Devil not out yet. And everyone is talking about what the next single should be. Well, i'm going to throw my penny in. As you know Alfie Allen. What about getting Lilly Allen to sing On The Town. A sure number one.
PS: looking good on Jools Holland in that white suit. Dont follow through, it will show :)
Be good old timer
Anthony

Dear Anthony
She was asked to sing on it I think and didn't want to. I think Rhoda is really good myself. I'd just leave it at that really but I'm sure some bright spark will suggest Lily Allen or Gwen Stefani is another favourite.
CB

hi chris bought 4 gold circle tickets in feb from trinity.I have a confirmation email from them but i do not have any from new handlers is my purchase still valid or do i reclaim money and re purchase.I cant get any answers from anyone.I await some info thank you.

Dear Dave
They were not due to go out till June anyway. You should be getting the tickets is all I can say. If you were on Trinity street's mail out then you are in the system. If you have not tickets by mid June start to panic and contact us.
CB
10/10

Dear Chris,
it's really good to hear you saying that you all don't plan to pack it in any time soon.

I think I can speak for all Madness fans by saying we'd be heartbroken if you ever called it a day (it was a big enough worry when you left the band for a bit). There will always be good bands around, but none will ever come close to being as special as you lot. Not even The Specials.

I've almost worn out my iPod with the new album.
I thought you'd set the bar very high when you put NW5 out, but you have managed to keep that standard up right through the album. It is as good, or better, than anything you've ever done. You should be proud of yourselves. We are proud to be Madness fans.

It's hard to pick a favourite, but the unbelievably high play count for "Rainbows" on my iPod must answer that question I suppose. I hope you play play it live over the summer.

Best regards,
Graham

Dear Graham
Thanks thanks thanks. When heard the songs I came back. With Rainbows I hope we do too.
CB
Elysium

Hi Chris

I constantly annoy my brother by playing Madness 24/7 (he's into modern dance music etc.) He said to me the other day..."the only song that would ever get anywhere in the charts these days is that Elysium song"

My question is...do you agree? If not, how do you rate the song?

Thanks

Mark

Dear Mark
It nearly was a single. I think it's a great song. The guitar's too quiet though and the keyboard line is too loud.

Norton downunder

Hello Chris,
Firstly, thanks for the great show you boys put on in Perth at the V-Festival. I saw you guys back in 1982 over here and it has certainly a long time between drinks! So to my question(s):Will you be coming back sooner than later?
And will you grace us with your Norton Folgate set or are we a country that only gets your greatist hits?
Illya

Dear Illya
I don't know. I don't do the gig booking. When we did a longer set we did a few Norton ones. At the festivals it was about 30 minutes shorter but still really enjoyable.
CB
Love your guitar sound

Love your guitar sound
Question: When's the next gig in Los Angeles. Gotcha! Actually Chris, I've always admired your guitar style. I am sure you've always felt restrained. I am more of a guitar band guy, but Madness is the exception and I always felt the way you played was real benefit to the band. Surely, you do your guitar solos at home! Hope you and the boys make it back to LA.
Ed Essa

Dear Ed
Thanks. I try to sneak in a few loud bits here and there..
Cb
hmmm good question.....no subject

Hey Chrissy,
Just like to say thanx to u and the rest of the band. In my 40's now and I've had a great time following Madness from Edinburgh in the early 80's, Madstock in the 90's, and ffs ur all still goin strong............QUESTION:- How long do u all think u can keep going? anyway well done Nutty Boys cos yer keepin me young lol ;-)

Dear Scotty
Thanks. We will carry on as long as we can.You keep us young too you know. It works both ways.

Hi Chrissy Boy

HOW MUCH LONGER?

Hey Chrissy boy,
its James here! i've been loving your music for years, gonna see you for the 5th time at Victoria Park! But I just wanted to know how much longer are you planning to keep on going! It always worries me the thought that soon your gonna hang up your instruments! Please tell me this will never happen!!!!

Dear James
It will never happen. Suggs wants to go on till he's at least 80. He told me that the other day. So I haven't got long to go then.

Bedders Ace Face Suggs just had his made Thommo probably Oxfam or War on Want he is getting a bit upmarket these days. We all get stuff from all over the place really. Dust Devil - Julian Temple

Hi Chris

Just visited the IMDB (dot.com) and found out that Julian Temple is doing the "Liberty" project. 2 questions.
1. what can you tell us about it and 2. Is the Dust Devil clip a small part of the big picture (which makes the video in my opion a lot more understandable).

All the best !!
John

Dear John
You already know far more than me.The video is not connected to Julien Temple.
CB
What's going on round here?

Hey Chrissy Boy What is happening round here lately?

Where has Chas's Basement gone? :-(

And why are you and Chas having "domestics" here in the cupboard? :-(

And why are all the "fans" bitching and moaning about the Dust Devil video - even though it's a great song and cool vid?
:-(

Have I accidentally wandered into the wrong dimension of reality or something?
Cheers
Sarah

Dear Sarah
Chas is now moved into the M section. I didn't notice we had been having domestics in here. Have we?

new fan

Dear Chris
My 6 year old son is driving us mad by playing the Divine Madness Album non-stop in the car (he found the CD whilst I was spring cleaning and liked the cover picture). He is also watching the dvd every evening whilst wearing sunglasses and using a toy golf club as a microphone.

Is there a cure? I mean congrats for out-doing the Nintendo DS and Xbox Lego Star Wars but it is..how shall I put it...driving me to Madness

Hayley

Dear Hayley
This is good. He is 6 so he will soon want our videos t shirts etc. It could be worse it could be some death metal band. Also it's better than playing video games that for sure. That's what my kids like...

Thank you.

Dear CJ,
I'm Sian from Perth, of Lee/tits repute.
Firstly, I was only joking about the "Lee sign my tits" thing. Honest.
I was just trying to grab your attention cos I know you must get millions of letters every day Mr Fix it... I mean Mr Boy.

Secondly, thank you thank you thank you sooo much for coming to Australia and making so many people happy. At Perth alone, you made even non-Madness fans really happy, so imagine what you did for real Madness fans all over the country. And I mean all over the country. I took 3 days off work and drove nearly 700kms to see you and you made me and my daughter very happy, I must say!

Thirdly, thank you for drawing Thommo's attention to my "Liberate my Folgate, Lee" banner. That resulted in him wiping his much-saught-after facial and underarm sweat onto his towel and chucking it to Me. Yes, ME. (swoon...!)

Fourthly, You look so God damned cute in that bowler, you God damned cute thing, you!

Filthy, do you remember I had a banner saying, "Autographs Pleees!"? My daughter threw it to Lee during NBTC, and he walked around with it draped over his head.
After you guys left the stage, a nice lady behind me told me that while I was looking at Chas, Lee signed my banner, told a bloke (cameraman?) to hand it back to me, but the guy threw it into the crowd behind me instead.
When she told me this I surged back through the crowd like a mad woman, but couldn't see anyone holding it, loving it, and cherishing it, like I would. I kept looking until we left, 4 hours later.

Sixthly, Do you remember I showed you an envelope with "Cathal" written in red, and I was pointing at Chas? Inside was my son Carl's message to him. I asked a bouncer to put it on the stage for me, but he said, "That kind of thing is not allowed". (fkn parcel bomb or what??) So I threw it onstage just as Chas was leaving.
Being only a light parcel bomb it fluttered up in the air then fluttered to the grass in front of me. A bouncer picked it up, put it on the stage, then a roadie put it over near the drum kit.
D'you think maaaybe some really nice roadie passed it on to Chas?

Seventhly, and most importantly, thank you for coming back, Chris. Not the same without you.

Sian xxx

Dear sian
First of all if the tits thing was to get my attention it was at the end of the message you know. We need that towel back. It is band property. Yeah bowler..right...flattery will get you..Sorry about the signed thing there you go, at least he tried. As for the bouncer, that is one thing I noticed in Australia they are [mostly] a right pain in the a** and too uptight and strict. thanks for the thanks.

Bringing Madness to the US

Greetings from Wisconsin!
I'm a high school history teacher here in the US, and I've been introducing Madness to my students (One Step Beyond is this year's logo for my European History class) and my children (ages 5 and 3 who LOVE you guys, my 5 yr old son knows the intro to One Step Beyond). That said, will you ever come play in the Midwest here in the States any time soon? PLEASE??!!
On a different note, I played sax for a long time and I was wondering if it was possible to order sheet music for the sax to your songs?
Regards, Jason Knoll

Dear Jason
Thanks for creating another generation of Madness fans, it is greatly appreciated. Madness sax sheet music I am sorry to say is not available. You would have to transpose it from the usual sort of sheet music. I'm sorry to ask this stupid question myself -but have got a relative called Grassy?

Nutty Girl from Melbourne

Heya Chris,

Just wanted to drop you a line to say what a wonderful bunch of down to earth guys you all are! By pure arse I met Lee (no one recognised him!!)at a Melbourne Pub about a hour before the Palace gig. We got talking and he said if he saw me in the crowd he would get me up on stage. Well true to his word he saw me and I got to dance on stage with you all - I\'m still buzzing!!! Then to top it all off after a magnificent (and emotional - I was brought to tears!) gig was getting to meet you all back-stage and getting photos, autographs and drinking "free piss"!!!

Then I met you all the next day again at your hotel to get my "F*ck Art Let's Dance" T-shirt signed by you all and given tickets to the Melbourne V-Festival - Amazing!!! Then I got to do it all over again at this gig and get VIP back stage!! Fuck Me!!! NB: note to oneself: Next time Chas drops the texta and you go down to pick it up and Chas pipes - "while you''re down there!" - take up offer!!!

I can't thank you all enough, especially Lee(even though he may think I'm a freakin 'stalker!!!!. But as I said to him at the pub, my life is pretty much now complete - I'm married to my best friend of 20 years, have two beautiful kids, have had the awesome pleasure of seeing Joe Strummer of the mighty Clash live in concert at the Corner Hotel, Manic Street Preachers live in London and now this. It has been 29 long years in the waiting (I'm 38 years young!) but I've achieved my dream of finally seeing you guys live in concert and then to get to dance on stage and meet you all personally - wow - nearly and I say nearly - as good as an orgasm!!!

Give my love and thanks to all the guys - especially Lee. Make sure he looks after the Merc trilby we swapped during the gig (I've got his $2 Cotton-On cap - lucky me!!!) and also the Collingwood Magpies Beanie I gave him. Go the mighty Pies!!!

You all are beautiful people and I hope you all come back to our shores in the not too distant future!

Love Roz xoxox

P.S Sorry if I crapped on....

Dear Roz
hi there love I thought you were about 19 years old myself till you told me your age. Nice to meet you. To meet you nice.

Box set / LONF film

Hello there Chrissie Boy, haven't spoken to you for a while, trust you are well.

First and foremost, a huge thank you for the boxed set of delights. I've not been able to part company with it since I received it. However, on more of a serious note, just to forewarn you (should it happen again) that my home phone number was also on the address lable on the box!!! Wasn't happy at first but, but put it down to an oversight....mistakes do happen!

Saw the screening of the LONF film last Friday, nice to meet with the great man Suggs, Woody (absolute gent), and the Legendary Monsiuer Barzo, whom I have always wanted to meet. But stupid me got soo tongue tied as I wanted to tell him how much I really liked his piano playin on 'Mission from Hell, but it came out totally wrong! Anyway it's f#in superb!! Has a Motown feel to it.

There are some absolute corkers in there, Dust Devil just seems to get better and better on every listen...thought it sounded great on Jules Holland programme btw!

Anyway, thought the film was fantastic, brilliantly put together, but so glad I saw it on the big(ish) screen, it made my evening...well worth the visit especially after shi-ite day at work.

Looking forward to hearing your version of the Roadette song.

Trying to blag a day off to come and see you guys at the Camden Crawl this Friday, so if I wanted to see you fella's I dont need a ticket, am I right? Hope to see you there or there abouts....whereever you are playing.

Regards
Andy

Dear Andy
Your number was on the box? Slack. At least you got it anyway. We will be in Camden from about 3pm some of the band are busking everywhere. We will all be in Inverness Street from about 7pm.
CB
Revenge is sweet

Hi CB,

Delighted to hear news that Suggs got an opportunity to give Steve Coogan a slight taste of his own medicine on a TV gameshow in Oz. Suggs was on the winning team and I am told is seen to be mouthing ‘loser’ at Coogan in the closing titles. (For the unenlightened few; Coogan made none too pleasant remarks about Madness in his Saxondale DVD commentary). Anyway, I am still awaiting Madness’s proper response to Coogan’s outburst, it would be far too mature to simply let the matter pass unchallenged.

Of course the obvious answer would be to simply slag Coogan off in the commentary on a future Madness DVD, but I know you wouldn’t want to stoop to his level. As an alternative, next time you play Brighton, maybe you could advertise the aftershow party as being around his place...or, slightly more subtle, perhaps your next video could randomly cut for a few seconds to a picture of Coogan on a dart board complete with 7 suitably placed darts? I do think it’s the perfect time to act, the tabloids love a spat between celebs, and faced with the choice of Madness or Coogan, I think it’s clear whose side they’d all support! Revenge may be unhealthy but is surely satisfying???
Chris CP

Dear Chris
That's all a bit childish isn't it?

alright chrissy boy i know you always seem to have additional brass players every time you play live these days but are there ever any plans to go back to the 7 piece we all know and love like the good old days? The 1st Madstock is perhaps the best Madness gig ever (my 1st) and you just had lee and chas on horns and it sounded perfect.
anyway, what do i know? im just a drummer :o)

Synesthesia

Hi,
This question may have to do with the old times:May I ask what kind of guitar did you use on your jingle-expanded-into-a-song "In The City?" It really goes well with the piano and I have to say that both you and Mike (oh and Mark) were masterminds on that particular tune.

Fortunately for me I also have a case of synethesia which makes the song all the better for me. Did Mike play two keyboards at once during the recording?
Thank you very much,J.C.

Dear JC
Thanks. I just looked up Synesthesia. Wow. I'm sorry I thought you had made the word up. Very interesting. The guitar was a Stratocaster which was modified with a Kahler whammy arm and I got the pick ups changed too. I can't remember what to. I used a mesa Boogie amp. Mike he only plays one at a time in the studio.

Not that your section isn't great but were's Chas's basement? Got problems with the site? I'm in the IT buisness, I can fix it.
By the way I would've chosen 'on the town' as the first single, but then again 'dust devil' is also good. Why didn't you choose Liberty of Norton Foolgate, that song has masterpiece written all over it, change of rythm, style, etc!!!

Wish Woody luck this coming weekend and a speedy time.

Dear Andre
It's hard to pick the right song but we are getting on the playlists. Chas has moved to the M section.

New record and Tour

Dear Chris,
not a question just a comment.

As someone who bought all the early Madness records from day one, just thought I'd say how chuffed I was to hear about the new album coming out. I shall also try and finally catch you live after all these years, hopefully at Newbury races.

At 41, with job, family, mortgage etc it is easy to forget to have a bit of fun in your life. Relistening to Madness' back catalogue has brought a smile to my face and reminded me just how many bloody good times in my life you guys have played the soundtrack to.

Anyway, forgive the ramble, just wanted to say good luck with the record and tour.

Cheers Dave

Dear Dave
Yeah it makes me smile too sometimes. I just heard some old stuff we did and it was very nice. You ramble on my son and thanks for the support.

Video - Dust Devil

Re; VJF rant about video.I think video is ok, anyway who cares about promo videos these days, surely it's all about the music- & the quality of the Folgate album speaks for itself.Radio stations need to be e-mailed/ text by all us fans , asking for it to be put on their playlists. As Chris points out -it 'aint 1979- ,the video 'aint as important these days , and i never purchased a song on the strength of a video anyway.
Andy

Dear Andy
Thanks. I meant it's not 1979 we don't have to be in the videos jumping around these days. OK-I was in Australia so was Thommo and Mike was in Katmandu. If we had been around I might have come up with some funnies and we would have been in it a bit more, but I think it's really good as it is.

Regarding my last question, I'm pretty sure you once toured Japan, is that correct and how was it? Did you see..CENSORED

Oh, one more if I may, the disc 2 from the boxset that everybody's been raving about - can I buy it on the i-tunes store? I'd like to hear that 'Hunchback' song.

The Dark Ages

Okay, Chris. Back to a question I asked a while back regarding what might get included on a new anthology release. You said no to The Madness stuff. Is that era being disregarded because it wasn't the full 7 or do you not like the material? It seemed to me to be a case of really trying to distance yourselves from the past in some ways but then other parts of it sounded really much in keeping with past glories. I particularly liked Thunder & Lightning, Song in Red, Beat the Bride & 4BF. In fact, I remember you playing 4BF on the Mad Not Mad Tour in 85 (Manc Apollo). I wondered if demos by the band proper exist because I thought there was quite a lot of good stuff on that album. It also amazes me that Suggs reckons the Mad Not Mad album was a polished turd (quote from Uncut) because I thought some bits were quality, although I concede to feeling there was some overproduction in a typical mid-80s stylee! And you were trying too damned hard to be serious!

Dear Big E
Personally, I always think Mad Not Mad is our most dated album. We wee in a state of flux Mike had left and there was lots of drum machines and so on. The demos that lead to The Madness had Mark and Woody on and some of them are OK. The ycould maybe see thelight of day some time. Suggs hates that quote.

DUST DEVIL A DISSATISFIED VIDEO CUSTOMER

Dear CJF,

I've just seen the video for 'dust devil'...what the f*ck was that all about? It's utter rubbish and has nothing to do with the song, nor indeed MADNESS.

For a band who always prided themsselves on quality vidoes, (however low budget they were back in the day), this is way below par. It surprises me that after the Sorry and Dangermen debacle, a band who have more than redeemed itself with the Liberty of Norton Folgate album, would allow this to be released.

In ways I could see the point with NW5 video, a quick easy live compilation video and the fact that it would hardly get any airplay by music channels anyway made sense. Even the Sorry video, a basic enough 'performance video' was understandable, but this new one just baffles me.

Are the band's management trying to make another dreadful attempt to be 'hip' like they did with the release of Sorry? Do they envisage heavy rotaion of this video on MTV TWO? TMF? or Bubble Hits or something with this 'Smack my Bitch up' tribute video?

Come on lads, 'Dust Devil', although not my favourite track on the album, was the most likely single and desreved a far better video than this, or failing that, do a 'Girl' (why don't you?) on it and make NO video.

Sorry for the rant, but i bloody love this band and hate to see sh*te like that linked to the Madness legacy.

Regards

VJF

Dear VJF
The Sorry video yes well, it was a right sad one. In NW5, I wanted just the stuff we filmed in Los Vagueness [which was really good] to be used but it turned into a sort of compilation of our gigs with no rhyme or reason, just bosh bosh bosh. I took my eye off the ball and that's what happened. I rang round the band moaning and trying to re edit it, but none of them were that bothered till maybe later, when it was too late..

I think the dust Devil video is brilliant myself. Well I would do, it was my idea to do a video with a boy and girl in it and none of the band. You are well wrong, I think it's got EVERYTHING to do with the song, it's 2009 not 1979, the subject matter of the song dictated the content of the video. Thommo hasn't got the legs to do drag any more. Depending on the next choice of single, I'll direct it and it will have all of us in it and be funny with jumping around and wacky stuff.I recently looked at all our old videos and they are not as great as you think you know, there are a good few duffers in there. As for hipness, some TV shows are refusing to show Dust Devil, because Jamie is saying....naughty words.

Elcome to the House. I did notice the chorus was spliced in each time, just not the dropped W. That said, they're better fitting cuts than the one that blunders in near the end of the Los Palmas single. You mention I Feel Fine/She's A Woman - surely Paperback Writer/Rain is a fine combo? Why did Dave Robinson drop Victoria Gardens as a single?

Dear Mike
This is becoming a regular occurence. I picked those songs because they were one of the first singles I ever had. Dave Robinson was never wrong really. I don't know why.

SCOOTER - CAMDEN CRAWL?

Hi Chrissy

I can't thank-you enough for agreeing to sign the my Vespa.

I've emailed Toni Tye several times but I met for the first time last night in Coventry (18th April), she's exhibiting her work at a gallery at the Cabin Basin, she is really looking forward to the Scooter being done and will be over the moon that you have agreed to sign it, she has, also, agreed to sign.

I also met the author Pete Chambers, 2-Tone trail, as you may have heard, he is trying open a 2-Tone muesemn and wants to borrow the Scooter and use it as an exhibit for a couple of months your signtures will only add to the Scoot.

The guy who will be wrapping the Scoot, Sean of Creative FX, said he wants to get Scootering Magazine involved with this one because of the link with Miss Tye, she will be there to sign before it is laquered, probably a photo op there for the mag, if the band would like to take the same opportunity you are more than welcome to join us, date to be arranged around everyone who will be attending (London area) otherwise I will be more than happy to bring the Scoot to you as mentioned in my last message.

The reason for the Scooter being done and all the publicity is my Daughter. Danielle has Cerebral Palsy and we're hoping that we might be able to use the Vespa in raising funds for Children with disabilities.

The Vespa should be done sometime this year, therefore, I was wondering if there was a way of contacting you rather than doing it via your cupboard as I can get in contact directly.

Once again, I am humbled by your gesture, thank-you and good luck with your 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Paul

Dear Paul
Any chance you can get down to Camden this Friday? It doesn't look likely, but I have sent your details to our management so they should be in touch. We have a got a few gigs on this year so if you can make it to one of them, I'll get the band to do it

Are madness only onstage at madstock for 37 mins? If so, why? You can't fit it all in that space of time, you could prob do a max of 15 songs

DON'T QUOTE ME

Elcome to the house... I actually didn't notice that on the cut, but I did notice that the I'm sorry sir... section has got more treble than the rest - was this track a mixture of recording sessions or mixing sessions? As it turns out, I checked out the track on a Technics 1200 (Mk 2 of course) which I was surprised to find sounded better than a far more respected turntable (ye olde Garrard 301 if that means anything to you.) Anyway why was Don't Quote Me On That issued as a promo? Was it considered as an a-side?
Mike

Dear Mike you wha..? Didn't notice that the whole chorus was spliced in every time? Don't Quote Meon That was an extra track on the Night Boat EP but we really liked it so did a promo version.

SINGLE CHOICE?

Hi Chris, I was wondering how a Madness single is chosen (nowadays)? What factor are considered? Is everybody in the band involved, just a couple of you or maybe just the A&R guys? Cheers.

PS. Dust Devil is a good choice IMHOB!

Dear Shlatman
Well that is the 64,000 dollar question.

ANDRE

Bonjour et good afternoon, Mr Foreman.
Just a quick shout, as I finally received the special edition box set of the new album.
Having given the two "main" CDs two listens so far - it's a truly great album, well worth the wait (hey, what am I saying here?!?). Totally agree with you - there isn't a bad song among the 22 on the ltd. edition. Good thing the standard edition won't just have 10 tracks as your manager wanted.
Looking forward to more gig dates (Cork... Dublin... anyone?) so maybe I can manage to see you guys a second time (after the then-Docklands-Arena in 2002).

Regards, andré

Dear André
Thanks. I'm glad you like them all.

HELEN

Hi Chris in addition to my previous question about Madstock tickets. I can see that others have asked the same question and that they are due to be sent out in June which is great news. But in answer to your question to the others.. no emails have been sent out advise us of the situation. There is no telephone number for AEG live and when you email them you get no reply. So this is why people are panicking so much I think!
Helen

Dear Helen
I have sent this on and hope to have some news soon.

CHAS' BASEMENT

Chas' Basement Question: In answer to a question:

As regards the writing of songs. I write on piano and guitar and usually i then go into a programming suite and record a demo which I then give to the band. So that my vision is as clear as possible. Of course the beautiful thing that occurs once all the band rehearse it and their characters seep into the music is that it becomes a Madness song.

Pour into large room with audio equipment and add 7 men from North London. Leave to play amongst themselves for an hour or two and voila!

I also like to give music every now and then to Suggs, usually when he has heard a piece I may be playing on a piano which catches his ear and for him to then write lyrics to. It is always interesting to see what he comes up with. I was particularly pleased with the lyrics to MKII which I thought were emotively spot on.

Because I seem to spend a large part of my time writing I am involved less than I used to be in writing lyrics to other band members music (although Woody still sends me his demo\'s which every now and then an idea leaps to mind)
Sometimes a few songs go out and a Murder of Maddies( three or more Madness Members congregated or involved) all write to it. That is exciting and happened some years ago to a tune which Chrissy Boy had wrote and I and Lee and I think even Suggs had a go at and after some years has found its perfect lyrical expression in That Close. I love the lyrics and it represents in my mind how we relate to each other as band members.

So I am here in Ibiza to finally pull out of my head all the words and feelings which I want to express and I am pretty productive and therefore ...

I have a large bloodied and battered chest full of words, music and poetry buried on the Island of Ibiza which the location of which is at the present moment is.....longtitude and latitude at a leter date me hearties....

peace & light

Chas

DECO HAS OUR LUCKY TOWEL

Hi Chris.
I FEEL COMPELLED TO WRITE TO YOU JUST TO SAY HOW FANTASTIC THE NEW ALBUM IS.
I heard many of the new songs played at the Tripod in dublin last year(on both nights )and was lucky enough to capture them all on video..(thats right I was the freak with the camera up to my face all night).
I first seen you guys at the S.F.X IN Dublin on the Mad not Mad tour back in October 85 along with the Friday club on both nights also.
I still have a cassette recording of that gig ( inc radio interview with Dave Fanning )
Madstock in July will be my 11th Madness gig and I'll be there with my youngest son wayne who's 14.
Just like the countless legion of loyal fans you have, Madness have been both a passion and an obsession over the last 29 years for me.
Once again I thank you for the fantastic musical journey that is T.L.O.N.F.
God bless you all.
P.S tell chas i got his towel in Dublin last year ( what a treasure )
Deco from Dublin

Dear Deco
Thanks for all your fantastic support and now your son is a fan, what more could I ask? Except for the return of Mr Smash's towel as it is band property. It was our lucky towel.

Just got back from The Liberty Of Norton Folgate premiere at Notting Hill. What a great film you've got on your hands, really well put together and hopefully available on dvd some time soon.Nice to meet some of the band there to,Suggs(had a little chat got autograph and photo taken, but seemed like he gets this a lot so was a little same old same old) Mike (got autograph and photo, seemed very nice but a little reserved)Woody (got phot and autograph,an absolute LEGEND had a good chin wag and wished him well for his marathon!)and if that was not enough who else should be there flippin JERRY DAMMERS!! hi chris, i saw some songs written by suggs, lee, and mike. did you ever write a part of a song?

CB
MIKE FISHER

Re: House of Fun edit. At the risk of looking stupid it strikes me that there are many edits in House of Fun rather than one. I'd say there was one immediately after drum opening and pretty much one every section change, possibly even mid verse under the vocals as there seems to be a hint of a timing issue. Am I right?
Mike Fisher

Dear Mike
Yes that was an obvious one and you have passed the test. Did you spot the massive one in the chorus? ......elcome to the House of Fun

Hi Mr. Boy,

Will the back catalogue be available in the boxset format? I'm pretty certain that I'm not alone in buying them if they were. Especially if there's a disk of out takes and demos etc. Maybe a page out the Bob Dylan and Led Zep stories and releases for some of the better bootlegs? Just a thought.

Still loving the new album keep it up.

I will tell you that standing next to some young girls at QLD they hadn't heard of you until the V fest list came up. They did a google on Madness and LOVED it so they stood at the front with us. You have some new fans it was so good to see.

I also meet H outside the gates in Melbourne and had a small chat, while he was trying to watch a set of Kiser C.

Recived the box set while you were still here, IT'S fantastic love it like everyone does...
Will the CD be put out in stores or is it only going to be on the web?
Looking forward to your next trip. Lets not make it another 23 years OK

Plus it's so close to August! (the time I thought would be ideal for a gig ;) )

Any chance of 'M' members getting a discount on tickets? or that for 'selected' gigs only?

Of course I did...M members discount! I don't think so on this one..

dear Chrissy boy  (240 EURO)

just found out your playing in IRELAND in september "f*cking brill"tickets for the gig go on sale tomorrow 17th april only to find out you can only get weekend tickets rather than daily tickets at a price of 240 euro a ticket "robbin b*stards" not you Chris, but the organisiers.

Dare i ask why MADNESS are so involved in festival concerts rather to there own show.

the SFX,THE POINT,DUNGANAN ICE BOWL ETC all of them venues seem to have the personal touch to a true MADNESS fan, i personally love that atmosphere when it happens although if nothing changes regard pricing to this gig i will still go,proberly concredites this e-mail.

21 TRACK MIND

'ello Chris,

What came up in the discussions the band had about the number of tracks (& which tracks would feature on) The Liberty LP? I ask coz I've invested in the BOX SET & (Gosh!) it sounds good as a 22 track double album! (How'd you guys cut it down to 15 tracks?)

Cheers

Mart

Dear Mart

You'd be surprised. Some wanted less songs. Our manager wanted 10! Well one of them did. I of course wanted them ALL on the CD. We agreed to have the 12 downloads plus [of course] NW5 and Africa. At some point in the future I would like to do a double CD with everything on. There is not a duff song amongst the lot if you ask me.

John P Justyn

Mr. C Boy. Regarding Jade's Amber Vs Rhoda 'On The Town' vocals. I give Rhoda the points here. Jade hit the nail on the head when she said Rhoda's voice sounds out of place...isn't that one of the points of the song...somebody out of place? Would you say hi to Whitney Yang from Taiwan? I took her to see Madness in Manchester, December 2006. She had never seen anything like you guys before. Spreading the word in Taiwan ...!

Hi CB. I see that some classic tracks have been released for the Singstar game and was wondering if any Madness songs will be making their way to the Rock Band or Guitar Hero games.

Time to dust off my fez and loafers and throw somes Suggs & Chas style shapes for Singstar. Be great to be able to chuck in a few legendary Chrissy Boy moves into the mix at some point.

Do the band play video games and if so which ones?

PARADISO LOST

Hi Chris, I had great fun reading the history of Madness in the 'about' option on the website, but I was stunned to find that the gig you played in Paradiso Amsterdam is missing from the list. I think it was around 1982, the one where someone stole Chass's hat with the S on it. I had  stayed after the gig to take pictures (actualy I was taking a lot during the gig and got Suggs and Bedders attention...on camera). Chas had a beard, which made me think of growing one myself.

I still consider it one of the best gigs I have seen by any standard and believe me I have seen many a band play life, many since then. I remember trying to talk to Mike after the show and he only laughed. Continue doing what he was doing. Got a picture of him though and Bedders and Woddy walking out. Missed my train, loaned a geezer 100 guilders to get home (which I never got back) and had to pay 100 myself for taxi to get home. Oh those were the days...hahahahaha

Say hi to the rest of the guys and happy touring. See you in Berlin and Madstock.

Andre

Dear Andre

Sorry for that omission. I just went with whatever I could find and that must have slipped the net. Great Venue.

VINYL

Hi Chris, Do you still have one of those gramophones? I dont,(its's all downloads and technology i don;t understand these days you know), but i still wouldn\'t want to sell off the vinyl version of 'liberty', in fact i still have vinyl copies of all your original albums,7 inch singles (including some picture discs), and 12 inch singles and i wouldn't part with them either.

from Andy

P.S my daughter sent you a message and is disappointed you aint put it up on these pages , yet mine are on here all the time, so can you say hello to Kate, cheers mate, see you at Gatcombe Park.

Dear Andy

I've got a Technics SL1200 and I dig out my old vinyl every now and then and discover long lost gems Oh La La by the Faces being one of them. I answer the questions in chronological order and I am still miles behind so I have just answered you daughter's one.

I am too lazy to send you anything, even a card. Sorry, I will do it one of these days.

CB

DOM

Dear Chris

Will you be there on Friday for the premier of your film?

Dom

Dear Dom

Probably not. But don't let that put you off...

CB

WOODY

Hello again CB - A few posts back someone wanted to know if any singles would be released off disc 2 of the Folgate box and suggested THE KISS.  I agree and also think LETS GO would work as well.  Who knew Madness could rock like that(I did!!).  As far as the official album, just about anything could be released but ON THE TOWN & WE ARE LONDON are sure bets.  Terriffic job and please come to America. (I'm gonna keep bothering you until you do)

Woody

Dear Woody

Thanks.Keep on and we might come.

CB

DEMOS?

Hey Chris

I noticed that a lot of the madness songs are written by mike, Lee, Chas and Suggs. I was just interested to know do they bring a finished song to you guys and you just play it or do they bring a long an idea or a half-finished and you basically all write the song?

I'm just curious lol.

Dear Chris

Good question. It differs. Chas and Mike usually have a very clear idea of what the song should be like. However, this can often change quite drastically. The best example I can think of is "Africa" which is nowhere near Mike's demo.Thommo well can't really say he does mostly lyrics these days.

CB

CONOR

Hey Chrissy Boy,

I gotta say, I love the new album, especially hunchback of torriano!  Will it ever get played live?

Conor

Dear Conor

I flippin hope so. Watch out if we do I shall not hold back...

CB

HELLO NEAVE'S DAD ANDY

sorry but i just left you a question saying could you leave my dad a comment but i forgot to tell you his name. it's andy. once again loveing the songs.

..........x

Dear Neave

Yes. I noticed that.

CB

NEAVE

hi chrissy boy. i dont know if this question is 'within reason' but i'm trying to find sheet music for the saxaphone to the madness songs and i can't seem to find any where to get them so could you point me in the right direction?

also my dad loves sca music (and madness) and he's the one who introduced me into sca so could you put something in your reply to him please. he will be exstatic =]

tah

neave...x

Dear Neave

There are no sax sheet music books for Madness. You will have to transpose the normal ones. Hello to your Dad from me.

CB

LILIAN

hi Chrissy ! been a fan for more than 20 years, i saw Madness my 1st time in Argentina (2006)

it was really great. And now my 2nd will be in Berlin (June 5th) and the 1st. time for my husband !!! thanks for playing in Germany finally!!! did you or anyone remember something special from the gig in Argentina?

love Madness for ever Lilian

Dear Lilian

I can't recall a thing about Argentina. I was not in the band at the time due to illness. I was sick of them all ha ha. They got really good and I came back just in time. They said it was great in Argentina though, really great fans. Barso got some great shoes, he wears them onstage.

CB

CAMERON

Hi Chris, what did you think of Japan?  Has to beat all this childish nonsense in Bangkok.

Cameron

(Madness ambassador to the eastern seaboard)

Dear Cameron

No - we went to Australia.

CB

STAV

Hi Chris.

Loving the new boxset. Just a quick note in answer to a previous question. You did do a boxset round about the time Wonderful came out called The Lot which had all the original 6 albums and if memory serves me right, I think each disc had the videos from the singles on too. Anyway, enough of that. Im looking forward to Madstock. My children are both over the moon they are going as it is the first time they will have seen you guys live, and the fact they go free is an added bonus.

Stav

Dear Stave

Thanks for pointing that out. Have a great time with the kids. Please but them lots of merchandise to compensate for the free entry...

all the best CB

GAZ

hi chris been a madness fan for 30 years my mate took me to the o2 in dec for my 40th fantastic night considering we stay in fife what a trip .hope you can keep touring forever .when are you coming back to scotland cheers gaz

Dear Gaz

Thanks Gigs? Who knows laddie? I don't do the gig guide.

CB

ONE STEP BEYOND EDIT?

Re: Michael Caine alternate 12" version on MIS.  Yeah - it did have the My name is - Ha Ha - Michael - Ho Ho, etc. but so did the released version.  The unreleased one although longer was a much blunter edit almost like an early prototype for the finished piece.  For the record I love the second section of the One Step Beyond 12" - I didn't realise they were considered as one piece which is not great (as I believe you said.)  More lively mix though.  Which reminds me: apparently the main body (i.e. not the Hey You! intro) of One Step Beyond is apparently an extended edit of a shorter track???  I've been an audio editor in the past and as a result can spot some edits a mile off - not this one.  Do you know where it is they are?

Mike

Dear Mike

It's funny you should say that. Can you spot the edit in House of Fun? OK that wa you starter for 10. One Step Beyond Dave Robinson always says it was one minute long and he edited it to make it longer. However the mighty Chas intro is 30 seconds or more for a start and the melody Thommo plays goes on for quite a bit longer without repeating itself and there is a solo section as well.. There may have been some repetition at the end phrases. But it is one of those myths.

CB

SHANNAN

Hey Chrissy Boy I Was Just Wundering Who In The Band Has The Worst Bad Habbit And What Is It

P.s Im 14 And Think You Guys Are Amazing Please Keep It Up

Shannan

Xxxxxxx

Dear Shannan

Thommo. He drinks my drinks onstage when I am thirsty and he also spills them as well which is even worse.

CB

CB

HMV?

Dear Chris ,

When The Liberty Of Norton Folgate gets released in May , will there be any record signings . Those were the days of queing outside Tower Records at midnight to get my copy of Madstock and meet my favourite band of ever . Sorry got carried away . Also when Dust Devil gets released will there be a big push , take over a few radio stations that sort of thing ?

All the best , Barry .

The big push is on. It's up to them play us or The Saturdays.

IAN B QUESTIONS

Hi Chris,

Am loving the new album, and really enjoying the tracks that weren't part of the download at Christmas.  They're brill.

Couple of questions:

1) Why did you change the female vocal track on "On The Town"?  The CD version is quite different to the download.

2) Why did you rearrange the order of songs from the download?

Ian B.

Dear Ian

1]I don't know. Rhoda was the girl in mind but Amber had a go as well.

2]Smoother running order.

3]er.. that's it

THOMMO DIVES IN

Hi Chrissy Boy!

Went to the gig at The Palace in Melbourne and it was without doubt the BEST CONCERT EVER!

Such an amazing atmosphere. Everyone jumping up and down, singing along, hugging, dancing, skanking. There was a lot of love in that room.

Seemed like you guys in the band were having lots of fun too? How did you find all the Aussie gigs?

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Check out this awesome photo my hubby took when El Thommo jumped into the crowd:

TALAN

Great to see you guys in Australia!!!  Big question is, when are you coming back to do your own tour???  You'd get stacks of us Aussie Madness fans coming to support it.  Thanks for brilliant shows down here!!!  Hate to see you having to compete with other bands for stage time though.  Come back down under soon if you guys can.

Talan.

Dear Talan

Could do it. Maybe next year...

DAZZ

Hi Chris, wrote before bout possible ticket for my boy at V Fest Perth.Lovely reply from Kate at DSS site. Just to say..gig was great you were the best act by a mile(Human League 2nd) I was right at ya in the St.George specs and dead chuffed when Graeme gave me a nod from backstage before you came on. Hope you make it back someday and glad the press here realised that we Brits still know how to have the most fun in the sun without any hassles.

PS Have you ever heard Cat Empire from Melbourne?Top Sounds mate.

Love and Respect to all Dazz

Dear Dazz

Well thank you very much.

LUNCHPACK OF TORRIANO

There is a possibility that touch "Hunchback Of Torriano" on Jools Holland's show?

Do not let escape that song is a single! I love it!

Dear Razz

So do I.So I do.

CB

MUSIC HALL? PUPPETS?

I need help with my portfolio! While listening to LONF I started getting pictures and ideas in my head for a video which I have now decided to start creating on paper for my portfolio. But my ideas are of Sweeney Todd vs Moulin Rouge in around the 19th century! But almost certain they did not have wide screen tvs and DVD's! lol. But then again this is Madness we are talking about lol. Can u give me any ideas as this is to get me into college, please? Jade xx

Dear Jade

They could be watching a puppet show which is sort of TV sized. Also a Music Hall type thing. Good luck.

CB

MADNESS CENTRAL

Howdy Chris,

I can be serious at time. Deadly serious. This is one of those times.

It'd be a shame if those songs on CD 2 of the box set were heard by no one beyond the diehards. This is why a single gleaned from this set of tunes is a must, perhaps a double A-side.

That in mind, I'll give you the best contenders for commercial and artistic success (for my aim is always true and only I know what is best, yes, only me):

- Hunchback of Torriano

- One Fine Day

Check out the Central poll on this subject. You'll see the opinion is not mine alone.

That is all.

Best

Esteban

Dear Esteban

Thanks for that.

CB

MELBOURNE

NEWS

Hi chris

Just been reading on Madness Central about forthcoming events like the CAmden Crawl, the screening of the Julian Temple film, Jools Holland.

Also there was your front cover on the UNCUT magazine.

Was just wondering why there has been no mention on the official sites about these.  Would be good to have an official news page on here with regards to forthcoming TV / Radio / press stuff. (or is that what the madspace site is for)

Graeme

Dear Graeme

The thing is they tell us what we are doing. OK...our news guy was in Japan. There is also news available if you subscribe to our newsletter.

CB

DOWNLOADS

Dear Chris,

I couldn't buy the new album as I live in China so I downloaded it for free on *******. I don't feel too bad about this because I have spent a lot of cash on Madness stuff over the years and bought many of the albums twice when they came out on cd... that said I do feel like I've let you down a tad on the loyalty side but I bet you'd do the same in my shoes and on my poxy wage.

Sincerely Jeff

Dear Jeff

God bless you my son. You are forgiven. However buy it when it comes out on CD will ya?

YOU GUYS WERE SOOOOO MUCH FUN....DID I MENTION I LOVED IT????? And I was waiting patiently because you didnt start until 10.30pm and I was on the side of the stage, and you walked past and up the stairs and what did I do??? PLANNING PERMISSION?

Hi Chrissy Boy. How big is your cupboard and would you consider an extension if the Council granted planning permission? Norton boxset is an absolute gem, cant stop playing it.Thankyou.

Dear captain

Thanks.Funny you should say that. I just saw my architect regarding some planning permission. So probably not.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Madness-Take-Leave-DVD/dp/B00007JGEU

Hi, I just wondered whether you knew if the madness film "take it or leave it" is still available to buy and where? I've been everywhere I've even been checking Amazon and ebay for a while and they don't even have it. Thanks!

Chris

Dear Chris

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Madness-Take-Leave-DVD/dp/B00007JGEU

but it's £35! It has been deleted while we sort out our back catalogue deal but it will re surface soon. So don't pay silly money for it.

CB

CD VINYL

Hey Chris - Just got the Norton Folgate box and can't stop listening.  Absolutely great so congrats to all.  One question: why is the limited edition CD sequenced differently?  I think it works better and was wondering what your thinking was.  I know that you don't want any "when's the next gig" questions but we here in the USA would love to see you.

Thanks for all the years of great music!!

woody

Dear Woody

What limited CD? Do you mean compared to the vinyl sequence? On a CD you can put them in any order but on Vinyl you can't.

CB

WO OH WO OH FOR THE WINGS OF A ...

Hey, I was woundering if you could tell me what the Madness song is which is upbeat and has everyone singing along to something like Ooooo, ooooooooooooo, ooooooo, oooo. its really hard to explain it! But it'd be great if you could help me :)

Many Thanks :)Zak

TV DVD

Hi Chrissy Boy,

First of all thanks for the box-set. I Think it's the best collection of songs in the last 2 decades.

I've read about the film of Julien Temple which will be shown on 17 april in London. Will this film be available on dvd or as a download on the M-section? A lot of people outsite London can't see it.

Dinant, from the wonderfull country Holland

Dear Dinant

Hopefully the film will surface one day on some sort of DVD or TV format.

CB

IT MUST BE LOVE

Hiya Chris,

I was at your gig in Newcastle in Dec 2006 and was wondering if by any chance you had any of the pic's that were on the slide show behind you during must be love? The only reason I ask is I have been a fan since I was very young kid lol... and some thing always came up so I could come to the gig such as giving birth lol, untill my hubby bought the ticket's for our anniversary lol.

Hope you are all keepin good,

speak soon Viki xxx

Dear Viki

I don't know what happened to them I'm sad to say.Sorry

MONICALS

Alright Chrissy Boy?

I'm having my Scooter done up in Toni Tye photo's from the 79/80 days and was wondering (if I could get the Vespa to a gig) once it was done if you lads would kindly add your monicals to it?

By the way the Liberty is as strong a collection of songs as I have heard in a long while, congratulations.

Dear Paul

Thanks mate. Our monicals? Yeah I suppose we could.

DON

Dear Don

What? do you want to go on the guest list at Romsey? No problem remind me nearer the date.

CB

ONE FINE DAY?

Must say I love "On The Town" and hope that is released after Dust Devil. Just curious why you seem to have opted for Africa as the final track on the new album instead of "Hunchback of Torriano"? To me, hunchback sounds a far better track.
Brian

Dear Brian
I think "One Fine Day' is better than either. Er...sorry...it's hard to pick the best ones really

A DIFFERENT BOX SET

Hi. Love the website. I've been trying to find a boxset containing all the albums but can't seem to find one anywhere. Will you be bringing out a new collectors set at some point or would it best to track down a used one online. Thanks. Julia

Dear Julia
Our back catalogue is deleted at the moment. We never did a box set with all the albums.Er....except it was pointed out to me that we did the Lot which had six albums but not Wonderful I think. We will be releasing all the original albums over the next few months.
CB
RACHEL

BEDDERS BANKNOTES

Hi Chris,
Just want to know, Has Bedders got his own printing service? Heard it on a interview once and didn't know if it was true....

Thanx

Dear Charlie
Yes. He was printing banknotes and he sort of got in trouble and they won't let him into Australia any more. He has a shop in Brick land and he does some design and artwork as well.
