Hello. Chrissy Boy here, back where I belong.
Send me a question and I’ll answer it.
Within reason. Nothing about “when's the next gig” please. That’s
in the bit called “gigs” on the main page at the top. If you want
to just say hello to any of us, please feel free to post a comment.
Thanks CB x
Many Thanks Question: Hello Chris
Not so much of a question, but a massive thank you for Madstock last week.3 Generations of my family went & we all had a ball.So once again thank you very much for one of the best gigs ive ever been to.
Jamie, Andy & Emma
Dear Jamie, Andy & Emma thanks, it's nice to hear. CB
Olympics Question: Hi Chris. I know it's a while away but with the olympics coming to London, and you being the premier band of said district, have you thought about offering your services for the official song of the games (they seem to all have them these days!)I think this would be an ideal opportunity to raise the bands global image. There is no other band that captures the feel of anything to do with London as well as yourselves do. Fantastic day at Madstock even if me and my wife did have one or two too many shandies! Riding a motorbike home 250 miles the next day complete with hangovers is not recommended! Cheers, Spoffy
Dear Spoffy Easy on there tiger. Chas has written an Olympic song ages ago. CB
Hiya Just wanted to say that having seen you guys in concert in Nottingham last Sunday (Splendour Festival) you were just as good, if not better than when I first say you in Derby in December 1979! I think that's when it was, I was still at school at the time and it was my first concert. Rosalyn
Hello Chrissy boy and of course the rest of the gang, Just to say that 11 of us went to Madstock this year and as always had a laugh, a dance and a great time (must have seen you boys about 10 times now). Even my grown up kids now want to come (scary). I remember danding to the prince with my mates at the youth club to the \'Prince\' 1979! Keep it happening fellas, nice one.Robbo
Fantastic night, well worth the trip down from Aberdeen. It just went too quickly. Have pre-ordered the USB from Victoria Park which I am looking forward to getting. Good to see you all on form, great moves for a bunch of lads who are not a young as they used to be :-) like the rest of us. Have already decided that when you do Madstock again that we will make the trip to London, though that could be expensive as both my daughters will want to go next time. Have put the boxed set of Norton Folgate on my christmas list, hopefully hubby will oblige. Enjoy the rest of the summer, hope you all get chance for a break. Big hugs, Karen xxxxxxx
Hi Chris back to ticket sales from what i saw it looked more like 40.000 is you estimation for tax purposes. Anyway been to all the madstocks my eldest was born on the 8th of August 1992 had tickets for the Sunday its all about timing. Thanks for Friday a night I will never forget and so will so many don't leave it so long for the next time hope to see you at chrimbo take care. Lawrence
Dear Lawrence OK there was ten people there right!Same birthday as me then? CB
Hi Chris, Can I just ask why Sugar & Spice was not played at Madstock if it is to be the next single from TLONF? Would love to see it released as a double-A with any of the non-single tracks you played last Friday. Aron
Just wanted to say the trip all the way from Hull to MADSTOCK was well worth it. Our first madstock and certainly wont forget it. Just need to meet you guys for pics n autographs and we will die a happy couple lol. Cheers chaps chrissy boy 2nd n Annemarie
Hiya Chris, Gotta say, possibly the best Madstock since 1992. Fantastic set, old and new, bung in an album track etc but where th f**k could I get a pint of bitter? Unfortunately (sic) I had to drink another means of alcoholic beverage! Also, how did your guitar continue playing while you waved to us lot in the Golden Circle? Not sure of the song now (due to beer) but could've almost been a Paul Daniels act. Now I like that!
Take it easy!
Dear Fred Hammer on my son, Hammer on. I was twanging with the left hand. CB
Hi Chris and all, Great Gig on the 17th! Nice to hear a DVD might of it may come out. Lastly, did that bloke get his wallet back after Suggs picked it up, or has Lee gone out on a spending spree? Ha,Ha!
I recently read the article featuring Woody on the Nottingham gig. here`s a quote from that woody said "People can think 'oh Madness, they're always around, we can catch them later.' Well, there might not be a later. We might just knock it on the head".
Can you expand on that?
I love the Norton Folgate Album when I heard the double album from the box set one of the first tracks that hit me the most was Seven Dials I just found it really catchy and Africa was just mind blowingly fantastic. The whole double album is just fantastic
Have you ever listened to any of the tracks from old albums and recent ones and thought that shouldnt be there?
The songs that didnt make the Dangermen Sessions songs like It Mek, Wonderful World, Pig Bag. Was there any of them that was recorded?
Also I read on one site there was a couple songs like idiot child which was left off "Wonderful" Why didnt they make the album?
Who chose the support for madstock and if you could choose your dream line up who would it be?
Mine would be Madness, Chas n dave, Buster Shuffle, Orange Street, The Specials Bad Manners Tony
Dear Tony Did he really say that?Yes there are lots of songs left from the Dangermen sessions. They could be b sides in years to come. CB CB
VICTORIA PARK WAS BRILLIANT!!!! CONGRATS TO YOU ALL ON A FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE IT WAS QUALITY, IT WAS NICE TO SEE ALOT OF PEOPLE MADE AN EFFORT IN DRESSING UP IN ALL THE GEAR DM'S EVERYWHERE HOPE TO SEE YOU IN DECEMBER??? CHEERS FRANKIE
I have a running debate with friends regarding the words in the intro of O.S.B. Most places on the internet now say, "it's the nuttiest sound around", my friends say "it's the nastiest sound around", and I say it really sounds like, "it's the Naziest sound around". Who's right? What is that word?
Madstock 2009!!!!!!! Question: To all 7 of you. I have to say that Madstock was quite possibly the best first gig in the world.I don’t think any thing I ever see is going to top it. I got well and truly crushed and covered in beer and I didn’t mind a bit. It does seem that all of us that were outside the golden circle had a lot more fun than those in it. Any way when you played Baggy Trousers and Night boat to Cairo something amazing happened. The atmosphere was electric and amazing, and the fact that I was laughing and dancing with people I barley knew (albeit slightly intoxicated people) and by best mate was amazing. And during the Sun and the Rain when everyone shouted “this is what life is all about” I can honestly say I said that from the heart. I can’t wait for another Madstock or gig in London. One thing though. Do you know if there is any chance of getting hold of a programme from somewhere or did they all sell out. I forgot to buy one. Cheers for an absolutely brilliant night that I’m still buzzing from Rachael
P.S no I don’t look like that.
Dear Rachael Did I answer this already? Glad you enjoyed it and I don't care what you look like. CB

thanks Rachel glad to hear it.If it's any consolation I didn't get a programme either. CB
... we had on Madstock! Comming up from Germany, me and my wife had a brilliant week in London and a fantastic night at Madstock. Everything went well: golden circle bands were waiting for us, the atmosphere was absolute great and you, the boys and your guests done a brilliant job! Holger
Hi Chrissy, just reading through all the messages people have written to you about the behaviour of some of the madness fans and how some people were upset,But this wasnt the bands fault its was some of the fans...Id like to think after all these yrs you are now used to some gigs have a little of bit of trouble and people getting upset. And theres nothing really u can do but offer support to the fans when they email you.I think thats nice.x NOW I HAD A GREAT TIME ..IT WAS MY 1ST And to see Chas come into the dublincastle on friday was fantastic ..i was to shy to go and ask for a pic and the fans had so much respect for him as much as he did for them..maybe next yr you will all sneak in and hopefully ill dare go over to say hello.IT was brilliant day..i was in the normal bit and still got too see you all.It was my 40th celebration and it was the best and you guy are still so sexy i wish i was your wivesxxWELL DONEXX AND LOVE YOU ALL LOVE HELEN FROM NORTHEASTX
I lost a small triangular piece of flesh from my left hand; bruised my ribcage to buggery; and had to suffer a Pogues fan's stiffy poking into my back(!) - but I managed to secure and hold onto my place in the middle of the front row on Sunday night. YAY! Still can't quite believe it, but this penultimate pic here tells me it's true...
That's me just above the music stand. No wonder I'm bruised. It was brilliant though! How should I go about getting a hi res copy? Email the council? Some hope.
Excellent gig again! Thank you loads! Though I did miss That Close. Love it and have to play it several times a day. Did you leave it out because it was a different type of audience compared to Friday (deviants excepted)?
Love you and the boys so much! Please do more gigs later in the year.
PS Did you go out in Nottingham afterwards? We found a curry house that was open till 4am. PPS Who did leave that grape on the stage?
Dear Amanda Very funny. The things you go through.I went home. The grapes were part of a bunch, we never found out who. CB
I was in the Golden Circle on Friday at Victoria Park and unfortunately had my wallet snatched in the opener of One Step Beyond. I still enjoyed the gig as best as I could but some of the people in that Golden Circle were scary thuggish skinheads who were off their heads. At the end of the concert the police walked off the site and refused to deal with the 50 or so fans who had been robbed in the Golden Circle and who wanted to find out what had happened to their phones, wallets and travel tickets. We waited patiently and all we were told by one security personnel bloke was that the police had walked off site (they actually walked straight through us!) and told us to go to a police station where all of the handed in possessions had been taken. I have spoken to AEG today who say that the LoveBox team were looking after all lost property but they have got back in touch to say that it is AEG who I need to speak to.
I did love the setlist and at last you changed it slightly which was great of you to do. Take It Or Leave It made it all seem better. Anyway I know one of the thugs was caught and they were foreign and I have spoken to the police but i just would like to know your opinion of events as it was far worse than any Madness gig I had been to in the past.
Thank you for your speech as well which was funny
Take care Chris
Thanks Mark Bowen
Dear Mark Really sorry to hear this. Contact the police again, they may have your wallet. The pickpockets were small time and only took the cash from wallets so you have a good chance of getting it back as hundreds were picked up after the show.In my opinion it was badly organised. thanks CB
hey chris v v disapointed with no cd single of sugar n spice love going 2 the record shop on monday morning to buy the cd single know they dont sell well now but what bout the true fans who collect the singles from the prince cmmon chris have a word please many madness fans r unhappy martin cochrane
Dear Martin Sorry but that's the way it is. At least we've done a video. CB

Dear Julie Send it to email@example.com CB
I'm not ashamed to admit that my first Madness gig was the Splendour Festival.... but I must say that everything I've heard/read on the Madness Central Forum etc. (all the good stuff) is true... the band put on a thoroughly good show and didn't disappoint. ;)
Did you get to look into the crowd a lot? If so, you MIGHT have spotted a teddy bear being waved about during several of the songs. That was my bear :D (the 'nutter' waving it about was me). Why did I take a bear with me to the gig? 'Cos he's my special bear and is named after one of the band members. So, although we got to see his namesake... we didn't actually get to 'meet' the band member.
Loved the gig.... I'm glad that TIOLI was in the setlist. My thanks to the person who chose to add that song. (am I right in saying that it was you, Chris? ;) )
Hi Chris, just thought we would like to say what a great time we had on Sat night, we were the couple stood infront of you in the front row(women in green top), first time Croline has been to Madness and can't wait until the next time. Good luck with the rest of the tour. M & C
hi chris dropped into nick bought a pair of the american brouges black and white they look great i mentioned i was talking to you and he gave me 15 quid off so thanks for that.i saw your robots they look cool but i just prefer the rubber sole.great gig really enjoyed it especially THAT CLOSE.great to hear TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.any idea what b-side of SUGAR & SPICE will be take care and thanks again michael farmer
Dear Micheal thanks the b side is a rare demo with Mike singing. CB
Hi bud just a wee note to say that I effin loved the gig, you guys were all ace and get better every time I see you , my two boys loved it too, and the fez hats which they still havent stopped wearing ( thanks for playing take it or leave it again it sounded ace ) all the merchandise was good apart from the programmes ( I prefer a real programme, not the plastic ones, and there wasnt a tour badge I collect them, got one from every time i have saw you so far so I was a wee bit dissapointed there wasnt one this time ) but I really enjoyed the whole day and cant wait till next time so thanks to you and all the guys from scotlands biggest madness fan ( I even got to meet thommo in the crowd before the gig, got a pic of him and my boys that I will treasure 4EVA cheers Terry B
HI CHRISSY, GOT AN IDEA FOR YOU! BECAUSE MR SMASH DOESN'T DO AS MUCH OF THE DANCE MOVES AS HE DID ALL THEM MOONS AGO WHY NOT HAVE A CHAZ SMASH DANCE OFF FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS TO 'AVE A GO , THE WINNER GET'S TO TOUR WITH THE BAND AND DANCE ON STAGE . WITH A BIT OF COACHING FROM THE MASTER HIM SELF, WHAT DO'YA THINK. MARK (FELTHAM)
Dear Mark Are the caps stuck on your computer? Less is more. CB
Hi Chris and all you nutty boys!! Wanted to say what a fantastic day we had at Victoria Park Friday, we have been fans for near on the 30 years and you just keep getting better and better. We took our eleven year old daughter to see you for the first time, she knows all the words to all your songs and doesn't care when her mates don't know who you are!! it was a shame we had to get her out of the crowd as she would have got crushed and we were pushed and shoved out, terrifying for her.I think the people that were drunk and ruining it for other people should have been escorted out! Anyway love you you lot!! any chance of a signed photo for my daughter, Georgia. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Clare xx
Dear Clare I'm sorry to hear that. I'll see what I can do. CB
Thanks very much to you for a brilliant, amazing, wonderful long weekend of gigs. Much happiness to you all. You can sit down and have a well-earned beverage now.
Quick question about the old days: can you remember who dressed up as the white cat in the garden in the Tomorrow’s (Just Another Day) video? My maths never was good, but I count eight people, not the usual seven…
Ta v much again, Yvonne
PS And who did leave the grape on stage at Madstock?
Dear Yvonne The cat was Thommo [I think] separate shot. The grapes? I don't know, there was a bunch of 'em. CB
Hi Chris! Friday at Victoria Park was fantastic, thanks! Actually, HMV on Oxford Street was pretty fab too! So, I'm now looking forward to Summer Madness on the hopefully Sunny Isle of Wight. Any clues as to who your support bands will be please? deanne
I really must protest most strongly that, after the excellent day out on Friday, which began with a gallon of Dublin castle cider, progressed through a warm bottle of Buckfast in the park, and continued with a variety of aperitifs into the evening, PLUS entertainment, I was not then accompanied on my exit by a highly-trained local guide to get me safely to my train home.
thus unaccompanied, I (and, regretably, the wife) took a completely wrong turn and struck off in a south-easterly direction, as opposed to the north-west route that would have taken us to Cambridge 'Eef and the last train to 'Arlow. had it not been for a kind cabbie, willing to take a crisp Scottish £10 note for the trouble of a 60mph mercy dash over the speed bumps of Roman Road, getting us to the platform a comfortable 30 seconds ahead of the train, we'd have been reduced to sleeping rough under my kilt.
I hope future Madstocks will take better note of the late-night navigational needs of drunk Scottish people.
Hi Chris, just wanted to say what how brilliant Madstock was. My boyfriend and i had a fantastic time. And also could you thank Suggs for me. We met him at Hackney last year and I asked if you would come to Nottingham... And you did Splendour(my dream come true) which was also an amazing day. A mad mad Madness weekend... Thank you all Mandy n Mick xx
Hey CB. i know i'm annoying and i'm very sorry but 2 things have been bothering me. Number 1 on one of the episodes of The Young ones why was bedders playing drums and Woody bass? Number 2 At the Gatcombe gig who were the 2 girls on stage at the end in Night boat to Cairo? Were they marks kids or woodys? Leah x Leah
In 'The Business' you spoke about the writing of Baggy Trousers had been credited to you, Mike, and Suggs, when it had been just you and Suggs. When was Mikes name taken off the credits? PS You and Mike are my favourites. Neil Gregg
Dear Neil As soon as I saw it! Suggs gave them [Stiff records] the credits. Good old Suggs. thanks CB
thanks for sortng out the golden circle debacle - i bet at times you wish you could have closed the cupboard and locked the door. I must admit I emailed you as I did get concerned, but the tickets turned up in time, so I'm glad I kept the faith you asked us to.
Just wanted to say I was in the golden circle on friday with my 9 year old step son (his first ever concert) and we had a great time. There was a bit of pushing etc, but mainly from people dancing, and to be honest every time that i was pushed that person immediately apologised.
Im guessing there may have been a few idiots but generally I have to say most of the crowd were impeccable.
I hope that those idiots don't spoil you're idea of having a golden circle as I felt it was safer to be in towards the back back of there, that in the general admission.
Lastly the concert was great, I cant understand why some people have complained about the sound - perhaps they need hearing tests.
Finally - just wanted to say what an excellent performance at Romsey Saturday night - went with 4 friends and was amazed how much energy you all had after what must have been a frantic 24hrs at madstock.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Isle of Wight in august
PS. Suggs suit was something else - you ever going to borrow it off the big man???
Thanks Simon Suggs suit is too long in the legs.. CB
Hi there. Just to say had a wow day on friday you boys just keep getting better. and on sunday i couldn't get to wollaton park (i'm a nottingham lass)but i could hear you in my back garden. i just shut my eyes and pretended. thanx again Carrie
Dear Madness, I saw you yesterday for the 14th time (since Madstock 92). I was with 9 of my mates for my stag do. They'd all seen you before as well. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great festival, well organised, lovely crowd, nice Police, great value for money. You did a fantastic set, and as usual, it was great to hear the new material ( I hope you keep creating new material indefinitely). Kid British are the best new band I've heard in a long time, I'm going to get their album. Did any of you get to see them? If so, what did you think. Coventry's Cheekiest Charmer
Dear CCC Thanks I didn't see them but of course I love that single.Glad your stag do was in the UK and not Prague or somewhere. Carbon er footprint you know.Says private jet boy. CB
Just recovering from the two amazing gigs!!! Madstock and the Splendour Festival in Notts. Had a great time at both and as usual you were fantastic. Got to the front at both gigs, involved hours of waiting but to see Madness i'd wait a million years!! Did you like the flag that I made and had at Madstock?, took me hours to make that and I nearly got murdered for it by getting neon yellow paint on my dads newly painted white walls! hahahha! Oh what fun I had! Lost my voice from all the screaming, shouting/singing I've done at the gigs. Tell carl I love him heheh! Jen xxxx
Not a question mate! I would just like to say that I really appreciate everything you do on here. I remember Chas saying he closed his web page down because it was becoming more of an agony aunt page, and I dont want you to feel the same mate. You provide a good service on here and I think its about time people should realise that they sometimes need a bit of common sense, i.e. when they ask daft questions for which if they took a little more time to GOOGLE it, they would probably come up with the same answer you would give them. I truly feel sorry for you at the moment, you are in the middle of the bands 30TH anniversary and we have had the golden circle, the trinity shit, box sets, the Madstock pick pockets and now the u.s.b. problems, and every time you have shown great dignity and patience, you are an asset to the world of Madness.......people please just contact the company that created these problems, I am sure Chris would put a litle something on the home page if he had any advice he thought would help any fellow Maddie. Lastly mate, I was punched up and robbed at Madstock, (that's for me to sort out) and I know others were too, however, strangely, I still had a bloody great day out, I have seen you boys all over the country over many years, and I wasn't gonna let a bunch of pratts ruin my experience. It was the best you guys ever sounded and top marks to whoever came up with the setlist, absolutely fantastic,as were the support and the special guests. Well done to all seven of you, especially your good self, and despite the problems.........roll on the next Madstock!! ps rant over!!!!!!!!!! nuttytoffee
Dear nuttytoffee It is not for you to sort out my man. You will be contacted soon thanks and all the best Chris
This is definately not a gigs question just a short prayer (appologies to athiests)
Our Father, who dances in heaven, O2 be thy name. Thy concert come, thy Dome will be done, on earth as it is in Greenwich Give us this day our daily Ska And forgive us our Christmas, as we forgive those who rock the O2 in December. And lead us not into the Thames, but deliver us from SkaVille. For thine is the hope-dom, the Skamking and the Dome. for ever and ever. Amen
Dear Madmick Very amusing but I don't think you have to apologise to the Atheists somehow. CB
Was at madstock on friday and would just like to say it was yet another blinding gig. Also what a great line up of bands you put on. Keep up the good work. Look forward to seeing you on your xmas tour!!!!
Madstock was great but was expecting slightly better things from the golden circle. We didn't get there quite as early as we wanted to due to crap weather and the fact that it was the busiest day of the year on the roads. But we managed to see the Blockheads then the pogues enjojing the music inbetween got talking to people around us including a family beside us right at the front. When you came on loads of tossers were squashing us and trying to get to the front. I know thats what you get at concerts but we'v always been at the front b4 and had no trouble. If you want to be at the front and see you beauties close up go straight in and wait if you want to get as much booze back your neck go beer tent then come in and watch them where you can don't spoil it for everyone else. Its called having a bit of respect sorry to moan you guys were great roll on the next one. Anita
Dear CB I have written to the Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary on your behalf, to have the term "Gold Circle" removed from the next edition of the publication. Would you also like me to contact them again and request the removal of "USB Stick"?? Yours LB
Splendour being the only word for it, mate. Thought you were outstanding. Approx the 15th time I've seen you but that one was really up there - and have allegations of your supposed grumpiness at gigs prompted your gregarious involvements on the mic? Quality, Chris, absolute quality! Big E
Thanks Big E My Grumpiness is often caused by concentration which some people think means I am not enjoying it. CB
Hi CB, You performed great at the Romsey venue. Absolutely loved it.Im just sorry that you had to put up with beered up louts throwing bottles at the band.I could see you were not particularly amused.Maybe you're used to this sort of thing, but Im glad that you didnt just turn around and go home. Thanks for a great night, and sorry it couldnt have been better for you. All the best.Antony
Dear Antony It happens a lot these days. I'm glad they are made of plastic... thanks CB
hey crissy boy.... madstock was the best day of my life. i met suggs at about 3pm. i saw him and said "alright suggsy, hows you?" he grabbed my hand and said "hello govner, how are you" that made me really happy, also his suit was amazing, where did he get it? before the blockheads came on, we were right at the front and said that we would stay there until the end. the blockheads were very good, i was suprised because i only knew 3 of their songs. when the pogues ca on the seas got abit choppy, some people were violent and hurt me abit, ah well, what do you expect? also, shane wasnt in the best state was he? still good tho. when you came on and chas started to do the one step beyond bit, i knew i was in for a bashing, when the music started i was jumping around with all these drunk man shouting and singing. sadly, my mum said that she was hurt and left. my foot really hurt too because some bloke hand stopped on it to get my place. i shouted to the security to get me and my dad out and they lifted us over. i put my thumbs up to you but you didnt see :( when we got back my mum said she wasnt feeling gr8 and she stayed away. she had hit sumbody in the eye aswell. me and my dad went back in wen take it or leave it was playing, but abit further back. from then it was gr8, really friendly people and singing along all night. i loved house of fun with the big balloon things. the funny part was somebody came up to me and said "you were the guy on the big screens being carried over the fence" that did make me chuckle, she said we were on the big screens. so yeah, it was brilliant mate, you were all brill and had a very good time, good choice of line up and a great day out. thank you very much for answering all my questions and worries about the gold circle, and we will be going to summer madness on the isle of wite on the 30th.
i have 2 questions- 1. will there be a madstock again? 2. what do you think of man like me? im suprised they are not very famous.
thanks CB jack
Dear Jack What an adventure! I'm glad you were OK. Another Madstock? In a few years maybe.Man Like Me are good, I hope they hit it off. CB
Chris i would just like to say thank you for putting on a great show on friday nite guys,i was in the golden circle and the atmosphere was amazing,i would just like to ask,is there gonna be a dvd coming out from madstock this year? Regards Darren
we got a gigg coming up in the dublin so we can promote all our own matirial and We are gonna be doing some recording soon you should come down and see us if your not busy.We gonna have a website running soon with a list of giggs on it i let you know when its up and running so you give us your opinion .And by the way my old spoke to ted and he said he was there. cheers regards spencer
Dear Spence I live in Brighton, do one down here. all the best CB
hi chris, i took my 7 year old son to madstock on friday and he loved every minute of it, trouble is since we returned home he cant stop singing baggy trousers and this has spread to my 4 year old too... is there a cure? simon
Dear Simon No - let them work it out of their systems. Thanks CB
Heard about Louise gettin punched and saw Barry's wife being taken over the barrier, just wanted to check they are both ok. I cant seem to be able to leave comments! Also think the evenin events should have been for over 16's! Also hope everyone got some kind of compensation for you lost valubles!?! Also ne1 no the bloke whos neck was bleedin? I hope to go to another gig soon but I dnt think I will do it again to soon! As some of ur so called fans were well to put it blank knobs for the incidence tht occured! x
First of all just like to congratulate you on a storming set and a generally well organised madstock. Loved the location, all the food and drink places and the waltzers!. My only gripe would be the Gold Circle and the way it separated the fans on a basis of who could and couldnt afford it. It really goes against all I thought Madness stood for. Not only that, it created a nasty atmosphere with those that were kept miles away from the stage baying for blood. I doubt the gold circle was the band's idea but it need's to be done away with if there is a next time (I hope there is!) BillyJoeJimBob
Dear BillyJoe I totally agree. It was a bad idea.I didn't know how many tickets we had sold. I thought it was a small area across the front of the stage. This delusion on my part was caused by the Trinty Street fiasco when I was told we had only sold 1000 tickets. CB
I would like to thank Carl, Dan and Suggs for taking the time to come over and sign my Scooter and my daughters birthday card, but most of all I would like to thank yourself for setting up the oppotunity and also signing, I realise how busy you all are, one thing that comes across it that you are all very approachable, this also comes across during 'Showtime'. If you see or speak to Rhoda would you pass on my gratitude for her signature.
Once again the gig was awesome, the energy that oozed from the stage was fantastic, the playing of Take It Or Leave It was a bonus and what a treat when not only Rhoda came on but Jerry Dammers too, his band were good to be fair, as were the Blockheads, The Aggrolites and The Pogues.
My task is to try and catch hold of Lee, Mike and Mark to complete the set, that should be fun perhaps they will take in the Scooters on the Isle of Wight and I'll get lucky, you never can tell.
Whilst I'm at it I'd like to thank Mel, Jamie and your Manager, who's name, I'm embarrassed to say, I have forgotten, for their help in getting me your signatures.
Really looking forward to the IoW, Scooters and Madness who could ask for a better weekend.
Dear Chris The band looked and sounded great on Friday but please next time you announce a Madstock, fight against this Golden Ticket rubbish....I was punched and had my wallet stolen, security didnt give a monkeys and as hard as I tried to enjoy the rest of the evening I couldnt and speaking to police over the weekend it is estimated 300ish people suffered a very similar experience... however, that said I have followed Madness since 1979 and class myself so, so lucky that the group of musicians I have grown up with are still selling out stadiums, arean's headlining festivals and best of all releasing brand new quaility tracks..you must (should) be very proud of yourselves!! PS when you do your next Madcam could you try and get an interview with a certain bloke who stands to your right on stage..not Suggs or Chas but the HUGE sunglasses wearing Mark Bedford...I would love to see/hear Bedders look on life and all things Madness... regards Melv..
Dear Melv Points well taken - no more Golden Circle.Bedders hates the attention. thanks CB
Howdo Chris, You guys were awesome at the Splendour Festival (at least it only rained while the Pogues were on....I think that was Shane McGowans grape on stage), but is Suggsy really going to buy Wollaton Hall and if he does are you all going to live in it? Keep doing what you all do best! All the best, Graham
Hi chris the email below was what i sent on your other e mail link and was picked up by liz...
As a loyal fan as ever could be having bought all the albums in every format every time they have been released from vinyl to tape to cd etc, I was so excited when I saw that there was to be another "Madstock" having gone to the very first in 92.
I bought my tickets 6 months prior to the gig in extreme excitement.
Coming from Leeds and with the gig being held on a Friday, I booked the day off work, managed to get baby sitters for my 3 children for the evening and next day (which wasn't easy) and travelled down from Leeds with my wife by car.
To say it was a journey from hell is an understatement! Bad traffic all the way down made the journey into an 8 hour nightmare but still I couldn't have cared because I was going down to see MY band.
We got to Tower Hamlets but didn't have a clue where to go because there were absolutely no signs anywhere to the park and we arrived very late in the torrential rain but still I didn't care because I was there to see MY band.
I bought a programme and an official Tee shirt and then went to the stage where Gregory Isaac was on followed by the abba tribute.
I was then surprised to see everyone leave as I didn't realise that there was another stage.
I was a bit disappointed because I missed Jerry Dammers turn and I really wanted to see that but at least I was going to see MY band.
So I walked round the corner to a much bigger field. I was about a mile away from the stage but couldn't get any nearer because there was a bloody great barrier preventing me from doing so. I was caught up with a mass crowd of irate people of which I asked several of them why there was a barrier between me and MY band. They told me that over the barrier was the VIP Golden Circle???? I asked all of them what that meant and they were all clueless and didn't know.
What it meant to me was that I had to watch MY BAND from the big screen because I couldn't see them because I was so far away and I couldn't hear properly either.
I heard Chrissy Boy mention near the end something about it but being so far away and surrounded by shouting people I missed what he said about it.
To summarise I am a loyal fan that really went out of my way to get to the gig and i was treated like a piece of cattle grazing on a bloody field totally out of the atmosphere and might as well have stayed at home.!!!!!
But could someone please tell me what this "Golden Circle" is and how you become part of it because if I am not a loyal fan then I don't know what counts as being one.
Yours Matt Handley
Ps. I went to see "The Specials" in Leeds a few weeks ago. I was right at the front and it was fantastic.... no golden circle in sight!
Dear Matt The Golden Circle was a total mistake. I didn't know how big it was until the day before the gig. We sold about 4500 tickets at £45. I thought it was 800. Big mistake. Sorry CB
just wanted to say how much i enjoyed the gig in Nottingham yesterday...the music was fantastic and so was the entertainment - i have wanted to see madness for years and it exceeded my expectations. And that was even after Huey from the Fun Lovin Criminals who, let's face it, is top totty. Cheers for an absolutely brilliant night! vicky
good gig at victoria park was staying just off kilburn high road got the tray the pogues were head butting on stage i saw more from this madstock than any of the other madstocks also i think with the vip tickets Carisbrooke Castle Fields iow it is about £25 difference standard £38.50 vip £64.00 can you look into this chris please don
Dear Don Do NOT buy VIP tickets for Carisbrooke Castle. CB
Dear Chris, thanks for a cracking show in Nottingham. The wife and eldest son (6) were getting a bit fed up hanging around in the rain all afternoon, but once you lot came on, it made it all worthwhile. I'm proud to say my son Harry knows all the words now. One day he might be tall enough to see the stage without spending the whole show sat on my shoulders! Thanks again, Regards Graham.
thanks for persevering Graham. How much does he weigh? At 6 it must be quite a bit.. CB
I've travelled to 4 out of 5 Madstocks all the way from sunny Jersey, been to a few other gigs too, and i believe you guys put on the best show i've seen!!! as with other comments i have to agree it did seem as there was a bit too much aggresion in the golden circle! and as for the pick pockets! well...? i was robbed! i felt wallet being taken but as my hands were trapped above chest level i cold do nothing about it! but i think the culprit must have dropped it as it was returned to me with all cash still inside :-) big thanks to the fellow who passed it back to me!!. unfortunatly dozens of other fans were not so lucky!!! we also moved back as i hurt my neck as some 14 stone skinhead was litrally thrown over my head and pulled down by security! anyway the show as i said was stunning especialy that suit! cheers! see you next time. ps great vibe all day in the Dublin Castle :-) Shaun
Dear Shaun I'm glad you got your wallet back intact. CB
I reckon that Madstock was absolutely fantastic. I was in the Golden Circle but didn't have any problems. I ended up right at the front, right in the the thick of it but it was great. My feet didn't touch the ground for about 10 minutes but it was great fun!
I've heard a few bad reports about the Golden circle but there didn't seem to be any trouble by me. Everyone was in really good spirits and jumping and dancing like mad things (me included) but that's what it's all about. There always has to be some poor idiots who can't handle their drink and try to spoil it for everyone else but they are in the minority. I reckon the Golden Circle was a great idea!
my best mate and his wife came over from ireland after we got some tickets for this gig, my son and his girlfriend also came, we managed to get right at the barriers just right off centre. Brilliant gig guys absolutely first class.didn't even mind getting a bit damp early doors. Just like to add one of my mates had told me you weren't any good live. What a t..t, you are without a doubt the dogs nadgers. Cheers Charlie
Hi Chrissy Just home after a fantastic festival......This was the 5th time i have seen you guys and the 1st since 1992...what can i say....you get better every time...thanks for a wicked evening...P.S....How much booze can Shane McGowan put away......cant speak but hit the lyrics word perfect.....weird!! Thanks...Mark Troughton
Not a question at all. After reading some fans terrible experiences of thefts from personage and some idiots being over-exhuberant I do hope they will get over their experience and continue to love the band for what you are... I didnt witness any bad behaviour and remained uncrushed at the front directly in front of your good self. It was sad to see some personal belongings, empty wallets lying around at the end and I passed a couple over the fence but expected that they had already been emptied. But on a slightly Jollier note, the performance was great, the toilet facilities unusually were good, more importantly the drinks prices reasonable.... All the best to the lads and see you again soon, hopefully.... Mr ScUrF
We come to your gigs every year, the best yet. Was it my wallet that got thrown on stage as I missed the part when Suggs read out the name. I was near the front of the stage and it had all my bank cards inside. Can't wait for the next show. Antony Adkins
Dear Anthony Did you not think to ask afterwards? I don't think you 'lost' it.. CB
Absolute class act on Friday Chrissy Boy! I've had a massive smile on my face and a head full of Madness tunes ever since! Loved 'Take it or Leave it' wasn't expecting that, and the new album tracks definitely stand up against the classics. Best band in the world. Fact!
Do you happen to know a Jamie Chalmers (Jam) by the way? Went to uni with his brother. Top bloke! Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave So Jam's [Jamie Chalmers]brother is a top bloke then? So's he.. CB
Dear Chris, I'm shocked to read about what happened in the Golden Circle, but I was more shocked too see parents taking there young kids so close to the stage. I mean Madness is not a speed metal band, but Madness is also not K3 (Belgium kids group). People tend to dance wild and crazy during a Madness gig. And usually this is done in the moshpit. I do not condone standing on someone, peeing on the field hitting or pushing someone. But I do believe that it's as much the fault of the parents to take 'really' young kids up close to a band as it is the w*nkers who get drunk and misbehave. I know Madness has always done extra for kids, so why not set-up a Platinum circle just for 12 and below.... Only problem then is that you will get golden AND platinum questions thrown at you...;)
By the way, I loved it, from the moment we entered Victoria Park, to the time we left and walked all the way back to Liverpool Street Travel Lodge. You guys are still the best!!
Thanks Andre I think we'll give all that circle stuff a miss from now on... CB
Hi Chris Just wanted to drop you a line to say what a wonderful gig at Broadlands on Saturday - first class!!!! And thank you so much for playing Grey Day, it bought back a lot of memories and nice too that I bumped into people from school that I hadn't seen for years. We maybe quite a few years older than when we danced to it the first time round, but you did us all proud. Please pass on my thanks to the rest of the band.
Roll on the next one in Broadlands in years to come???
Had a great time at Madstock , the weather turned out a lot better than the forecast. Thought Jerry Dammers , The Blockheads and The Pogues were all excellent. Madness as always were fantastic , great to hear a lot of the new songs . Did you and the rest of the band enjoy it as much as the fans ?
Dear Johnny It was a bit of a pressure. London gigs always are.Good though. All the family wants tickets. CB
Hi Chris, really sorry to hear of people having stuff nicked etc. The wife and I had a great time. I didn't take my wallet, just enough cash in my front pocket. We stuck to the mid to rear of the gold circle crowd as the wife is not as mad as me and breaks easily and to avoid the inevitable p1$$ heads. You can not be blamed for people not looking after themselves and the people they are with or poor security. Cheers Chris it was a great set and performance as usual
Just wanted to say that Friday was marvelous, you lot were brilliant and it was a pleasure to get the crap knocked out of me in the name of great music - esp enjoyed TLONF live. In reference to Mike and Shaz's comment - I was in the Golden Circle and I am a complete Tosser.
First and foremost many thanks for all the enjoyment you have provided over the past 30 years.
Just a few quick questions please.. Can you confirm if Suggs is in the process of writing a book? Chas, at Madstock referred to TLONF selling 9 million copies - is that true? Lastly, just who are those very nice young ladies who play strings, and are they single!? Cheers R.Wakeley
Dear Robert Thanks. Suggs is writing a book on London, Chas was jesting it's nowhere near that figure.Yet. I don't know thw marital status of thestring players. CB
Just saw you all at Splendour in Nottingham, have also seen you in Budapest and Manchester. You are without a doubt the best band ever and still doing it! You must get the Brit awards for life time achievers next. Anyway enough of the creeping, my husband who is you second biggest fan, after me obviously, though he would dispute that, anyway he is 40 on September 30th, its a milestone birthday and he would be thrilled to have something from his favourite band, can you suggest anything that would blow his head off to open as a present? Thanks for keeping us entertained for all these years! Jo Edwards xx
Hi I just wanted to say it was amazing. The best first gig in the world and i dont rekon ill ever top it. Cheers Boys. I just wanted to know, is it possible to get hold of a programme (cos i stupidly forgot to buy one) and is there any plans for a dvd? Cheers Rachael P.s Chris no i odnt look like that.! ^_^
Dear Rachael I wouldn't care if you did. Programmes I don't know, I didn't even get one. A DVD who knows when? thanks CB
Hi Chris, Massive Madness fan from Notts missed the gig last night due to family commitments, gutted not to be there, just wondered how the night went and i hope you enjoyed Nottingham, very depressed Mark.
Dear Mark er I hate to say it, but it was really good, a very nice setting. CB
Nice to meet you again, albeit briefly at Madstock my fine fellow. Excellent gig once more and here's hoping for more of the same in the near future. Hope you enjoy the book...Gordy 'The Amphetameanie', should be able to translate it for you....The 'rasharshs' joke shall be used at a big dinner towards the end of the year.
See you when I see you.
Dear Dug I've nae had time tae read it yet, y'ken? CB
not a question Chris just a few comments xx Madstock was great, all the band looked fantastic! made my night you played "On The Town" my fav new song .... seen few fans at the airport wearing the fez's big smiles always good to see ! Take care Jill
Hello again, I was at Victoria Park on friday like yourself and many others obviuosly..!!! We had been on our feet since 4am but when you lot came on i had more energy than my 9 year old son. I was at the front, it sounded great to me. It was a great day from start to finish even with the rain. I got a great souvenir from the day, suggs's brolly, it was blowing all over the place, and at one point Barso nearly fell over it, he said a few choice words then put it at the edge of the stage where it eventually blew off. A photographer put it under the stage so when the gig was finished(boo-hoo) i got it from a security man who looked at me as if i was daft as he had to crawl under the stage to get it(lovely man). The umbrella has since been to Upton Park (where we stayed) Camden Town, London Bridge, Gatwick Airport, Glasgow Airport and eventually home with me to Paisley. Could you ask Suggs if he wants it back and if he does i will gladly return it. Cant wait for Mad stock to come out on dvd so i can relive the day again and again. A very appreciative and long time fan. xXx Nicole Pettus
Well done, Nicole. I don't think he wants it back... CB
Had a cracking time at Madstock. Who decided to pull Take It Or Leave It out for an airing? A great surprise,I nearly choked on my bacon roll. Do you all decide the setlist or is it down to one person? All the best, Jez
Dear Jez I think it was our soundman, Dad. Woody does the setlists and we all argue a bit. CB
Crushed!Battered!Bruised!loved every minute of it!Thanks you guys for makin mine an my buddies trip from aberdeen so worthwhile(knew it would be!)dont think my legs will ever be the same! You nutty boys just keep gettin better every time i see you!Lovin your new album keep up the good work guys lynette xx
Just wanted to thank you for an excellent two days. Really enjoyed it on both days. Glad you played That Close and Norton Folgate for Madstock. It was also nice to see that the band really did seem to be enjoying and having fun performing House of Fun at Romsey. Hope Lee is o.k after ending up flat on the stage at Romsey.
What other instruments do you guys play other than the ones we associate you with ? By the way Norton Folgate...gets better every time you listen to it. I think it's your purest Madness album to date. Lee James
Dear Lee Most of us play keyboards in some form. Chas can play anything really. Bedders plays double bass and he is very good on the ukelele.I just found out how/why! CB PS CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE MY 2000th customer! You will be contacted shortly.
Slowly recovering from Friday. Had a week in Malta with my two kids. Bumped into a maltese bloke with a Madness t-shirt on at the airport who was flying over for the gig. I landed at Gatwick at 9.30am. Drove upto Sheffield to drop kids off and pick mate up. Drove back down, stuck in horrendous traffic and weather. Only at jnc 11 by 6.30pm so pulled off at Luton to catch train. Got to Victoria Park just after 8pm. Drove back upto Sheffield after gig, dropped mate off, then drove home to Cleethorpes. Got home at 6am, showered and changed, at work for 8am, finished at 6pm and I've slept ever since. Worth every sleepless hour, you were absolutely amazing!! As for the wallet, the pickpockets were having a field day the thieving b'stards!! Bully
Dear Bully Oh dear - sorry. thanks for all the effort though.I have sent your details to our team. CB
Hi Chris, Just to say that Madstock was amazing, it was the first ever one I have attended and you can tell Suggs that not all of the teenagers were dragged by their parents (as he said on his radio interview.) Also, how are Lee Thompson's ribs? I watched in awe on TV when he 'flew' during baggy trousers even with his broken ribs and just wondered if he damaged them futher by doing that and is that why he didn't redo the stunt on Friday? Many thanks, Laura.
Dear Laura His ribs are Ok. We didn't have the facility on Friday. CB
i just wnt to say tht madness is the best puing in ur mind tht im 17 and i aint one off them sad acts who just sit around do u think tht its sad tht i now all the lyrics to most songs thnks when next g*g ryan
hey, just got to say friday was my first festival and i couldnt have enjoyed it more, loved all the music and was glad i knew most songs :) I've been wanting to see you guys for years and finnaly got the chance, and loved it. Thanks for putting on a great show. P.S. Suggs your suit was fab. Hope to see you guys again soon. xxNickyxx
hello krissy boy really enjoyed madstock me and my girlfriend were at the front of that golden circle and enjoyed the golden showers and sunshine great set but was dissapointed not to here sugar and spice or idiot child from new album it was good to hear take it or leave it taller than you are and all the new stuff and when you ask did anybody email you i surely did. keep up the good work and i believe i was next to mike barsons daughter who was wearing a black top saying madame barso thanks for the madness clifford
Dear Clifford That's not Mike's daughter! - it's Emma AKA Mdme Barso. CB
Wonderful! Thanks Chris, and please pass that on to "The Boys" -as my little girl now calls you. We stood and sat at the back of the Golden Circle (great idea that)and the nice security man let Helen take her collapsable garden chair in. Smashing sound/view/room to dance. And no hassle. Oh, Helen says next time you "pretend" to go off before the encore, that we should all hide!
"Take it or leave it" was a lovely surprise and TLONF is genius and a real treat to hear live.
I did put my hand up when asked and can only apologise for my panic and lack of faith - never again. Oh, except where's my Madstock USB? Mat, Helen and Livvy(5)
Firstly, an outstanding evening - thanks guys. Glad of a few new slowish songs half way through as my legs and feet cannot take it anymore ! My calfs are still incredibly sore ! Being towards the back though from your eyes CB of to the left of that centre structure thing the sound did seem to get lost at times, maybe on the wind caught it I dont know. But Usually the ringing in my ears overpowers the noise my better half makes the following morning, but not this time. Still, was a great night had, and worth the trip from North Somerset. Dont leave it 12 years for the next Maddie please. Cheers, Gelboy
Hi CB, Just wanted to say ta for probably one of the best days of my life(aft the kids births and marrying my lovely hubby. Madstock was all i expected and more, too many highlights to mention. Thanks to you all and bring on the next one soon. Nicky xx
Last Night's gig Question: You are an absolute legand Chris!! Last night's gig would have to be one of your best yet! Apart from when thoes two men in the crowd started to fight and it slightly scared me but it didnt stop me from dancing about to your songs. Well Done xx ((and thanks for letting me have a great night x)) Georgia MacLeod
hi cb. thanks so much for a fantastic night at madstock,i bought the usb key of that nights gig and had another party when we got home.i couldn't believe the amount of wallets found and handed to the security people, its nice to see so many honest people that night. thanks again. stuart.
Dear Stuart Yeah right they were empty though. thanks CB
Hi Chris Have finally recovered from Madstock! the DM's took a pasting but it was well worth it. Thought the new tunes sounded amazing and the old ones just get better! As always a superb performance from the boys. Have you heard the sample of "Our House" on a tune by Kid Britsh called Our house(is Dadless)? Keithy Boy
Dear Keithy Boy Yes - we had to approve it. thanks CB
What a show Madstock was... well done! Dont leave it so long next time. What i was having a wonder about was what do the band do after the gig? especially when you do 3 consecutive nights...do you gohome....do you go outon the pop....or something else..????
thanks for selling xxl t shirts too
all the best squire
neil neil orange peel
Dear Neil I went home.I had a gig the next day, you know. CB
The look on my two youngsters' faces as, "Hey you, don't watch that, watch this......" (lines which they had been learning incessantly for two weeks prior to the concert), were belted from the stage, accompanied by X thousand excited Madness devotees - PRICELESS!! (Well certainly worth the admission ticket prices anyway!)
What a day and what a night! Incredibly well organised; right down to imaginative catering and plenty of easily accessible loos - Well done to everyone involved!
30 years in the business? Maybe so. But far from becoming jaded, predictable or surpassed. The new material fitted-in seamlessly within the set without alongside faithful Madness tunes. Absolutely brilliant - Madstock 2009 @ Victoria Park - Loved it, loved it, loved it!!
One question - There were one or two properly-kitted out/official looking film crews mingling, particularly during the daylight hours. Can it be assumed that this relates to a compilation of a forthcoming Madstock 2009 DVD? If so, any details as-yet regarding proposed release date and place of purchase?
Hi CB, I would just like to say that Madstock was a superb show - Take it or Leave It and That Close were my highlights, and of course Night Boat. I especially loved you shredding the guitar with your beer can (can't remember which song tho, maybe Grey Day) - I bet nobody apart from me noticed that but I loved it :D Just thought I'd let you know that, and hope I see you come back to Ireland for a regular gig some time soon (not a festival!) Thanks for the amazing day man, it was a prvilege to be there.
cheers crissy boy and the rest of the gang for a cracking day at madstock..after me and the mrs got a little lost on the underground(to many beers i think)we finaly got to the gig....back in wales now and i gotta say, there will always be a welcome in the hillside for you all in wales...again DIOCH yn FAWR(thankyou very much)..kevin..
Chrissy Boy! Madstock was amazing. Thanks to you and all the rest for a great night - a life long fan. Can you get Drip Fed Fred on to itunes? Belfast concert 7/12/07 was best birthday present ever - hope to see you back there again. John Pinkerton
Just like to say what a great day we had at Madstock - thanks! We've been celebrating hubby's big 50 (16th jUly). Saw the Dualers at Indigos on Thurs- Brilliant, Madstock on Fri - excellent and BBQ on Sat - What a way to celeb. We all loved MS and want to know have you ever thought of playing at Blackheath? Thanks again to all of you, Fran, Keith, Claire, Lee, Kevin, Pat and Paul Harris xxxxxxxxxxx
Dear Fran, Keith, Claire, Lee, Kevin, Pat and Paul Thanks for coming. CB
Hi CB I paid for a memory stick at the concert...Forgot to pick it up...How do I get it now or have I lost it.....Great night by the way...Me & my 12 year old neice had a great time...We also had our photo taken by a photographer at the front of the stage.....Where are the photo's gonna be published...Cheers 4 ur time.....spunkybadger..-X-
Dear SB You are having a laugh, right? The photos I don't know about. I'll see what I can do... CB
Dear all especialy CHAS you made my day for coming to the dublin castle making time for us berfore the concert.i will remember that kiss 4 ever and the photo will take pride of place lots of love as always di xxxxxxx
The 17th july 2009 will always hold a very special place in my heart, not least because the boys were fantastic at Victoria park, but because of the wonderful people I met in the Dublin Castle at the prearraned Madmeet. Just knowing there are people out there who are as nuts about Madness as I am almost makes me well up.In my everyday life I am always trying to big up Madness and try to convey to people how good the boys are.Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.But in the Dublin Castle before the gig itself a good time was had by all,not least because Carl was there to say hello to the fans for a while. The fantastic jukebox in the pub gives people like me the chance to get up and dance and sing along to songs like One better day and Yesterdays men, and do you know what? It wasnt just me and my twin brother Gary who got up,there were loads of fellow Maddies who let their hair down and threw away their inhibitions.I Even asked a pretty girl to dance with me while It must be love boomed out, and she said yes!I honestly believe that two people I met named Liam and Sam from Cardiff are now my friends for life.Thankyou to everyone in the Dublin Castle who made my day one of my all time favourite days. Del
Do you have a rough idea of how many were there on Friday? Would be interesting to compare to previous Finsbury gigs.
PS Why don't you just ignore gig and autograph questions rather than reply. They don't deserve a reply, you don't want to answer them and most of us don't want to read them because a quick look to the left tells us that we already know you're not playing Cameroon in June. Maybe I'm a bit less tolerant than you!
Dear Vince We sold 14518 tickets but we may have sold more on the day, I don't know. Every little question is precious. I ignore/delete all the "when are you playing ones". I'll have to change my disclaimer to include a few more things I think. CB
Hiya Chris, Just wanted to say Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of Madness for a fantastic day at Madstock.Us four nuttygirls from Corby had a ball.We stayed in London on Friday night, then went to Camden on Saturday went round the market then took your advise of having a few cheeky drinks in The Dublin Castle.Thank you again. Big kiss. Jane.x
hi chris i'm sitting watching divine madness again as i didn't get to madstock the question is how many takes did yous have to do when you were sitting on the stairs at the start of one step beyond ? it is brilliant all the best fae big john fae stonehouse
Dear Big John Not many, just a couple. I was in charge you see and film is expensive. CB
Chris Just a brief note to let you know that I had an excellent time at Madstock Friday past. I flew up from Glasgow for the day as it wasn't one to be missed. Good to see Jerry playing along and Rhoda as well. Anyway, the question bit.....did you know that myself and many others had our mobiles and wallets stolen by someone lowlife, while we were in the Golden Circle? Complete scumbags but I wasn't going to let than spoil the show Anyway, on a happy note, thanks again and I look forward to seeing you all again sometime soon....hopefully North Of The Border! Take Care D
Dear Derek I am really sorry about that. Glad you enjoyed the show, though. CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, can you help me out ? trying to play some madness tunes but am struggling to work out the chords. Its easy to get the sheet music to divine but i want, to name but a few. Primrose Hill, Sign of the times, Mrs Hutchinson. As many albums songs as poss! What you reckon ?? Cheers for your time. Nick
Dear Nick I am really hopeless at this, sorry. We did do books for those songs at the time. I just did a search, which turned up zilch. Another job for me to do at some point. CB
Dear Chris, Words can not express how happy me and my mates were attending Madstock. The whole affair with the tickets turned out right (as you kept saying ;)...), the atmosphere was great, the Blokheads were great, the Pogues were good (not a big fan) and then Madness. Superb. My mates and me went crazy. I'm not really sure how to describe it, but what used to be fond memories of the past have become great memories of the present. I am glad to say that I'm a Madness fan (since the beginning) and that I have already seen'm twice this year and not years ago. Highlight of Madstock...bumped into Lee and got my picture taken with him. Biggest highlight of the evening, singing along with every song you played.
Saw the Cambden Cowboys at Butlins last year and forgot that time moves on, Lee has got quite large!! Anyway it was 80,s madness weekend and I was wearing a lace madonna glove, Lee wore my glove to play one step beyond and I sang the intro cos he passed me the mike. Just wanted to share that with you cos my husband went to Broadlands last nite and I am gutted cos I am at home with the swine flu, and it is a swine cos it meant that i missed out!! Boo!! Thanks for listening and stuff. XX Netty
Dear Netty Have you come out in rashers? Get well soon. CB
Hello Chris, Don't want to keep you from all the great work. I just want to say that the new album is a masterpiece, the pinnacle of 30 years of outstanding music. Congrats to you all, see you soon here in dear old Ireland, Barry Murphy
OH MY GOD!!!! I have been to a lot of gigs in my time to see lots of bands... (Madness 6 or 7 times as you guys are my favourite and have been for many many years now) but i have to say that Madstock last night was the best gig i have ever been to... I had the best time ever... I was right at the front on the barrier and now my ribs are sooooooooooo sore, but sod it, it was worth it! You guys are awesome. I stayed at stage 1 all day because I had prime position on the barrier so missed Hayseed Dixie, where they any good? I have to say the the Pogues were the worst band of the day for me (I don't mean to offend, but i have never been a fan really), but Shane was comedy value and kept us laughing throughout the set... he was so drunk. :o) Haha! I was surprised he could even walk on to the stage. :o) I hope the gig was as good for you guys as it was for everyone down in the field. :o) I really hope it gets release on DVD. Any chance of that? :o) I was a bit worried to see so many little kids in the golden circle though... i'm pretty sure they must have got hurt. Did you hear of any injuries?
Thanks again for helping with the tickets Chrissy Boy. :o)
Anywho... keep up the good work and I hope to see you again soon.
Thank Rich As far as I know there were no serious injuries. all the best CB
Hiya Chris.....Bit Of A Weird subject this Time But In a Few Years Me And A Very Close Friend Of Mine...Leah Rix (Yes eah Rix Whos Birthday You Made Amazing At Gatcombe Park That Commnted You To tell You) Well We Are Starting A Madness cover Band Called "Mad Times" But Don't Worry We Are Going To Write some Of Our Own also ......But I was Wondering If You& The Rest Of The Band...Especialy Chas (Since he drew It ..I Think) Woud Give us Permission To Use The Madness M Thanks for Reading This CB Shannan Xxxxxxx
Hi Chris, thanks for a great Madstock! Me and the wife Jackie had a great time. We called in the Hope and Anchor and The Dublin Castle for a few beers before we made our way to Victoria Park. Inspired use of a Corona bottle by the way. SteveR
got my memory stick with the recordings of the madstock gig last night and i\'ve also downloaded the encores i am missing 6 songs between liberty of norton folgate and on the town i was wondering if you knew how i could get this sorted out so i can get the missing tracks such as our house and baggy trousers?
as a fan of madness from the very early days,i was wondering if any members of the band ever thought that you'd still be going strong after 30 yrs?..especially after mike departed in the 80's (was it after "yesterdays men").would like to say thanks guys for all the great music down the years, its been a pleasure being a nutty boy!.cheers matt.
Hi Chris, unfortunately I did not manage to see the whole of Madstock due to some T*%t nicking my wallet and hundreds of others by the sound of it, luckily I caught him and had a bit of a scuffle with him which resulted in one of his gang punching me in the face. I managed to get the security who were useless to finally get him and he was arrested so I spent the rest of the night in the police station doing a statement. Unfortunately due to the time it took for the security to get their fingers out he had either passed my wallet onto his mates or dumped it and my £250 was no longer to be seen and I missed out on all the class merchandise. The police say he had previous for theft so hopefully I saved a few people from getting their wallets nicked.
Anyway thats my rant over and for the majority of people it was a class gig, I hear Roda Deker and Jerry Dammers joined you on stage, would have loved to have seen you perform On The Town and The Liberty Of Norton Folgate, hopefully you will be in Newcastle soon and I can make up for missing them there.
P.S. if you are one of the people who was doing the thieving please keep away from this site because you are definately not welcome and are no fan of Madness.
Dear Dicka Really, really, sorry mate. I will get our team to send you something. CB
hi chris just to say i went victoria park last nite (17th july) was fantastic u guys was great i will go next year if ya there. but i was not impressed wiv the golden circle it was to crowded im 5ft2 and wen u guys came on the crowd went mad n i was gettin pushed n shoved left rite n centre. dont get me wrong u learn from your mistakes that we left the golden circle area 5mins after u came on. hope to see u again soon. lisa x x x
Dear Lisa I'm sorry to hear that. There have been a lot of complaints about the wonderful Golden Circle. Next time we'll put it in another field. In another town. CB
Hey crissy boy!! madstock was brill! the blockheads were very good and i got crushed during the pogues ( Shane wasn t in the best condition)i was right at the front, im only 13!! ouch. when you guys came on, and chas started shouting the one step beyond bit, i nearly died, i was trying to film, sing and fight of big drunk men at the same time! but then the funny bit happened. my mum hit a bloke in the eye because he was a d*ck head and hit her. she said it was too much and left ( she was just behind me) my dad told me that we had to get out the front bit too, it was going CRAZY!! so i said to the security to get me out, he lifted me out and I put my thumbs up at you, but you didnt see :( and ran after my mum. we went back into the gold circle, but about half way which wasnt so manic, but a gr8 view and gig. much to my suprise, however, a woman came up to me and said "are you they boy who was carried over the fence, you were on the big screens, and it looked like y ou had had a storke" oh i did laugh.so we enjoyed the concert, dancing and singing, I went on my dad's shoulders. Im not little though, I am 5ft 11inch and look older than 13. also at about 3ish i saw suggs walking around and shook hands with him, that made me happy. i dunno if u saw me at all? i was wearing a trilby, madness shirt,long-ish blonde hair. reading that it seems like a no, lol. anyway, all in all i had the best day of my life. will there be a madstock next year? thanks top the whole band and the organisers for the best day ever. jack
Dear Jack Thanks for coming. Sorry to hear about some of your experiences though. CB
Great gig got soaked mate but whats a bit of rain we are british after all. But when it did stop raining we were then getting soaked by the beer that was been thrown at those prices i wouldn't have wasted a drop. Obviously more money than sense or maybe not man enough to actually drink it. We saw the end of blockheads and Pogues wre great[shane god bless him, he's a walking miracle]. Great gig loved Suggsies sparkly suit where was yours? Any idea if your going to do your xmas gigs this year, or even just O2? Well done again great family day out met a lot of genuine fans and its just good to see loads of people smiling and having a laugh. Anita
Dear Anita Thanks. Yes, they have money to throw around don't they? CB

But in the final asssembly they played baggy trousers and me and my music teacher, Mr Laurence got up and started singing! It was asif Suggs himself was in the room! And where can i get the Sugar and Spice single from? I want to here Barzo singing :D. And 1 last thing, on iTunes it says on TLONF CD has interviews and things...Where?! I have the CD and the box set and neetha have them, :-(. Amyway hope you had an amazing time at Madstock. (: Leah X
Dear Leah It was an experience. Education is important though. The interviews are on iTunes. CB
hi chris , i went to the concert on friday at victoria park , and brought a usb stick after the gig ,i went to use the code , but it does not work and comes up with german writing , could u pls help me , what should i do , GREAT GIG CHRIS , PLS BRING ANOTHER MADSTOCK BACK TO FINSBURY PARK ..
Hi I had my photo taken at Madstock with Suggs just before the Blockheads came on by the nearest bear tent / loos. He had a really nice suit on and sunglasses, my mates say it wasn't him?? Was it? xx Jennie
Dear Jennie No - it was his stand in. How the ££$£@ should I know! send me the picture! CB
Although i had tickets for victoria park already through one of those rare but fortunate series of events i found myself booked to dj inbetween some of the bands on the second and third stage - the higlight being playing pigbag to a full tent (i have to confess to praying for a little rain at this point) before youngsta. i guess this isn't really a question is it but just wanted to say what a fantastic day i had made even better by that last minute booking. Met loads of great people as well - aren't madness fans the best? (there's the question!) DP
Hello Chris, I was at Madstock yesterday and it was my first and I must say that I think it was the best line up of bands I have ever seen. Man Like Me have to be one of the best up and coming bands in the U.K. Is there any chance that the concert will be coming out on DVD and on C.D. like the first Madstock. Are you going to be playing at the 02 Arena in December by any chance at all? BLucky Callum Wylde
Dear Callum I'm glad you enjoyed it. There should be a DVD out some time. CB
Hi Chrissy boy,Great gig Friday at VP . My question is why are all the so called fan's in the golden circle bit such tosser's.I've been following MADNESS since I was 15 now 43 from the first TOTP creation to now and just think they should have more respect tis' all!Having the privilage of being so close to the GODS you are HA! HA! God Bless Ya MADNESS Oi Oi mike and shaz
Dear Mike and Shaz Thanks for all the support the last 30 years. Yes - £45 to go through all that? Time for a re think. CB
Hey Chris, first of all just to say I had a brilliant time last night at Madstock despite the rain! It was the first gig for my friend and he also loved it and wants to see you guys again, which didn't surprise me.
Secondly, there is a picture of a f*ck art lets dance bag on the mad shop bit where it says new accessories but the bag is not actually up for sale. Is this because it has sold out and if so are there gonna be any more coming in? Thanks! Holly
Dear Holly Thanks. The bag I don't really know about, try to contact the merch company. CB
Dear young Chris Sorry this isn't about the good ship Madness ,but the few who let the side down . Anita,my lovely wife and myself just had normal tickets and we were happy with that . I entered the on screen competition to win a pair of GOLDEN CIRCLE and bloody hell we WON a pair ! We were so pleased a ran from mainstage to collect them ! We were so pleased ! But when your goodselves came on stage things went wild . Please let me say that i have been to many Madstocks in the past and none of them where like this one . the pushing and twats just throwing themself's onto everyone else was to much to take and there was even blokes taking a piss where they stod !Anita was pushed so hard she hit the floor and that was that. We had to leave the circle for the safety of my wife, my friend Louise was removed by security and dumped out of the circle. She tried to get back in and was told to F off and got a punch in the face by a fan ? I felt so bad that i wanted to leave and probably would have done if I hadn't paid 20 for the memory stick thing ! I'm sorry to go on but I was so looking forward to having a good day and well you know the rest . Really enjoyed the music shame about the few ! Cheers Barry
Dear Barry Really, really, sorry to hear all this. I don't know what to say. Saddoes who can't hole their beer really. CB
Oh my god i cant believe im actualy messaging the nutty boys! Love you all loads. Saw you at victoria park and many times before that too. Made the mistake this time of going to the front and nearly got crushed to death it was really scary but you were all amazing as ever. Saw the Dualers the night before at O2 so our legs are suffering today as we didn't stop dancing for 2 days. Was lucky enough to have a pic done with Mike Barson before the show. Still Buzzin now. Keep on doing what you all do soooo well xx Lisa Ellis
Hi, Chrissy Boy,just want to say thanks to you and the boy's for an outstanding gig, first time for me the wife and kids, we all enjoyed it and would love to relive it al over again. Will there be a DVD of the performance available. Thanks, Dave Wilkinson
Dear Dave Thanks. Yes I hope a DVD will be out some time. CB
CB, Thank you guys so much for a brilliant day yesterday! The hole day was just filled with passion for u and it was amazin, we had people stoppin us in the streets to say have a good time as they werent fortunite to make it! As for the Goldern Circle my feelin is it needed to be smaller!I new wot I was lettin myself in for last night but didnt no just how painfull it was actually goin 2 b lol, but kept smilin and still am!!As for the pick pocketers..... well wot can I say, complete disgrace! I am so angry that people feel they have to go and cause agrow for people goin purely to have a good time! So CB Wens then next Madstock? lol. xxxx
Dear Commander Thanks for a great gig last night. You looked as if you really enjoyed, and it was nice to see Jerry join you as well. Gotta ask, when you dedicated Forever Young to "Owen", was that me or Owen from your stage crew? I was getting all egotistical for a minute. Please also pass on my thanks to Bedders and Lee for speaking to me and Gav when we met them backstage last night. No, I don't know how we got backstage either, but it was very nice back there. We should sneak in more often. All the best Owen The Nutter (flat cap, inflatable sax, crushed expression)
Oh you are a scream. Yes the dedication was for you dear boy. CB
I am 16 and went to Madstock last night (first proper gig) and personally think that you guys are the best thing since sliced bread. Thats it really no questions just gratitude. Thanks for making my first gig such a great one! Jess
hi chris. just wanted to say i had a realy good time at victora park on friday.mate you and the boys still kick arse.you sounded perfect well done.keep the good work up and all the best to you all. a happy fan. andy
I have to say I was so upset at that event. There were small kids in that gold circle and they were stomped on by grown men (thugz). It was my cousins birthday and I bought tickets as I had been a madness fan since 79. Before you were onstage people had their belongings stolen. The crowd was throwing a ladies handbag around. Fights started amongst grown men. When the music started it got worse. There were small kids being crushed and they were crying. Alot of people were complaining to the APS security. Their response was we havn't got enough staff. People were bunking into the gold circle who didn't have tickets. People were really upset and angry.........I wish I had just gone upto a big issue seller and give them the 50 i paid for my ticket, and just sat at home and listened to your discs. Well just getting on to ticket master amonst others to give them some verbal. Leona Rogers
Dear Leona I am very sorry to hear this. You are not the only one. However, Ticketmaster have absolutely nothing to do with it. CB
Hi guys, me and lots of my mates came to the gig at viccy park yesterday. It was f###ing excellent. First time I've ever been to one of your gigs. I really really enjoyed myself, I was so excited before the gig that I was actually going to see you guys live. It was brilliant all day/night yesterday. My mates have been to quite a few of your gigs but like I said I've never been before but extremely glad I went to this one!! I know this is a really silly question but I don't suppose you do personal gigs (for mates, ha ha)? Or maybe turn up at a party being held on 1st August over clapton, e5 area. No need to play a gig or anything but I'm sure everyone there would keep you all watered and fed all night. I know you'll probably say no as you're like film stars in my eyes and as just as busy as them if not busier and defo better (brilliant), BUT WORTH CONSIDERATION ATLEAST SURELY. Thank you again for last night it was really f###ing fantastic, thank you all of you guys for making my night!!! Anyway like I said if you not busy on the 1st august 2009 then drop by we'll keep you fed and watered (alcohol-yes) all night for free, and you wont even need to sing just turn up and be your selves. Thank you for maybe considering it. Please. Miss J, closet madness fan x x x x
Dear Miss J How kind but I hardly know you. CB
p.s. I really love you guys, oh and there\'ll be lots of pretty girls there too just incase you want any eye candy to look at, he he x x
sorry chris i dident think i see that time changed and and i was a bit miss led. Im so glad the weather held out but is was a close call It was probaly the best one iv been to so far it was a wicked show . Praps one day you should return the favour and come to one of our giggs ,we are planning one in the dublin castle but we gotta get our set right for that one .cheers regards spence. ps how was ted il be seeing him soon at a football doo. spence
Hi Chris,I will be seeing you at the Romsey gig tonight. Dont manage to get to many gigs but i would like to go to another but would the all singing all dancing ticket which allows me to meet the band etc. Do you get this with the VIP tickets? May see you again in August on the Isle of Wight mate.
Good luck at Romsey
Dear Andy I only just got this, but you wouldn't have got one anyway. CB
oh it was nearly like old times being right at the front, just to say it was brill and now you wont have so many replies to write now the golden circle is no more you can get out of the cupboard and have a cup of tea. x lynn
Dear Lynn Oh no, that crappy subject is still on the agenda... CB
GET BACK TO FINSBURY PARK! Whoever was in charge of the sound tonight needs a good kicking, it was terrible. Of what we could hear it was great, great to see you all back in action and it looked like you were enjoying it again. Keep it up lads and thanks. (not for the sound man though) steve
Dear Steve You seem to be the only one complaining - so far. Anyone else? CB
Dear CB, thanks for answering. My wishes goes to the band. i know, that you don't was there 2006. Suggs said it at the beginning .-) I bought the sticks, thanks! But I saw @ you tube that close from Berlin. You make a DVD ? Congrets for 30 years great ska!!!!!! When Do you play Berlin again? Best wishes Thomas
No questions ..just a huge welcome to Romsey for tomorrow!! Cant wait ..am bringing my kids to show them what I grew up with..my youngest Erin is 10 this weekend and this is part of her birthday treat ...she's been learning all your words... see you there ..have fun x x x ps...Erin says hi to Suggs
Hi Chris Just have to first say, how much Madness have meant to me, i'm 32, was pretty young first time around, but i knew those early hits when i was in the playground, and i think it means so much that you are all playing now! I saw you at Guilfest, easily one of the best gigs i've been too, better than bowie, macca etc..! Norton Folgate is brilliant! You all look like you get along, really well, and have a genuine bond and rapor onstage! Question is, was it like that in the early days? and is it like that off stage? Thanks Ben
Dear Ben Thanks.I left the band a while ago, for health reasons. I was sick of them! We argue but mostly get along these days.
I want to record the poems by the Basildon Blogger for BBC Radio 4 and a CD. I know that you Suggs would do it brilliantly. Please read the website Suggs. I know that if you consider doing it you would want a complete script and agents and the BBC would have to be involved but I just need to know that you would be interested. Thanks Jack.
Essex rolls on under the night
London Fenchurch Street station to Pitsea Snaking out past the Gherkin and Dome Upminster the last of the central line And not long ’til we’re thundering home
Across the wide flat fields of Essex Occasionally glimpsing the Thames Flashing beyond the refinery smoke A scattered handful of sparkling gems
The sight of those track side places Where a body would never be found The endless deserted wetlands You can only be Basildon bound
The smiles of the girls on the stations Makes you glad that you are alive The fortunate few, the Essex crew As we gather speed and slice clean through the M25
Dear Jack I like it. I have sent it to Suggs but it may take some time to get a reply. CB
Dear CB, Hope all is well. @ Int. Cafe waiting for my connecting flight. Will be @ Broadlands t'morrow, will be there early so h'fully can try to say Hi. More performances in the pipeline under You Tube Madness Rags, may be able to do a demo t'morrow. Like the new t-shirts added.
We just finished writing a song: http://www.lhearts.com/ourmusic/HOLENEW.mp3
Feel free to cover it if you like it. It's about a man who falls down a hole. It's very madnessish...Chris WWW.LHEARTS.COM
Dear Chris I went to your site, I liked your artwork. I found a song called falling down which is not what you meant, but I thought it was really good. Honest. Are you ever playing Brighton? HA! I asked someone else a GIGS question! CB
Hi, my name is Danuta and I'm a big fun of Madness. To confirm this I will say that my biggest musical dream was to see the Madness on stage in Poland. This dream has been fulfilled during the Opener festival, where I jumped with other fans in the crowd for 90 min in a rain. I regret only that you did not play on main stage due to delay. On my 40 birthday present my husband took me to Belfast (Dec 07) for the Madness concert and I will not forget it to the end of my life. I want to see Lee flying under the stage. Do you ever come to Poland for only Madness concert?
Dear Danuta Thanks for coming and getting so wet. Maybe one day we will come back - it was very good. CB
just a quick one to say im taking my kids to vicky park to further there education re music and my own history so often sung about in your songs thanks for all the music over the years from a nw1 boy grt idea with the under 12s going free keep well joe squires
thanks Joe, I hope you had a good time and didn't get too wet. CB
Just came back from my sons school leaving assembly. Where i also work but wangled the day off to see you guys. Where my son and his mate were dancing around in DRESSES to dancing queen really mucking about with sad dancing so if you want to go back to your old style videos i've got a couple of extras for you. But i am a bit upset my baby boy is moving on so really need to cheer up. So as usual lads have a good one can't wait to see hope you enjoy it too.Not quite the weather we had for the original Madstock. Anita
Dear Anita I didn't get wet-did you? Next time, get the school to do a production of "Our House". There are some girl parts in it for your son. CB
Hi CB....we will have some children with us at the gig (7 to 13 yrs old)..if you are able, and if remember, it would be great to hear you say hi to "Isadora" from the stage (she is a 13 yr old with learning difficulties) and would make her evening...although it will be amazing for her and her younger brothers anyway. No worries if it's all too much, or just not what the nutty boys do!...have fun...looking forward...and the sun will be shining too....Thanks, AC
Dear Adam Look I'll try, but I forget in all the excitement.Don't let them get squashed will you? CB
bout pissin meself in excitement. two madness gigs in three days.the woolaton one with my boy of 6 summers( his 4th gig no less!)been able to get him to jump thro hoops with the threat of ''if you don't behave etc etc''.see you tommorrow and please give m.a.d.d.i.e.a big kiss from me. pat.
Dear pat One down, one to go. For you that is. For me, it never ends....Living the dream. CB
hi chrissy boy, rumours are flying round the island about who your support acts are gonna be, such as the specials, the selecter, and the jam with PAUL WELLER!!! any of these true, if not can you tell me who your support acts are PLEEEAASSEE. stu
Dear Stu Do you really think ANY of those rumours are true? Dream on.I don't know the support acts but it is none of them. CB
Hi Chris Any release date for Sugar & Spice? ,and any info on 'b-side', or formats.Good luck with Madstock on Friday, i won't be there,(came to Gatcombe the other week), good job really as i am off work with swine flu. all the best from Andy
Dear Andy hav you come out in rashhhers? Sorry bad joke. The single will be out on the 3rd of August. B-sides will be a Barso demo with him singing [I think] pretty good, well worth it I must say. CB
No question Have a fantastic time tomorrow ....look forward to seeing you when I can make it or when you next come to Spain...Any chance of one of the amazing hats you will be wearing...? Sion Le Shoes
Dear Sion Sorry, only just got this I am running late. We did have a great time though thanks and I wore a Homburg hat.No you can't have it. CB
Hi Chris, Where can I get to learn those dance moves you guys put up on the screens at your gigs? My mate has hired "Complete Madness" for his wedding and we want to have the most mental first dance for him and his new wife!!!
Not sure if you showed it for Swan lake at Bham NEC last Christmas? I think you did!
Loving you guys since 1980!! Quality then...mint now!!!
Hi Chris, if you spot me in the crowd at Madstock tomorrow could give me a wave? I'll be the one in the trilby and Madness T-shirt you woun't be able to miss me. Cheers. Have a great day. P.S. I'm glad you rejoined the boys. SteveR
Dear Steve Yeah you and 500 other tastefully dressed people. Thanks for having me back. CB
advert Question: Hi Chris Has the advert been shown yet? Or have I missed it, when racing through the ads with me sky plus button. Although even at top speed you can still work out whats on your tv screen.
Dear John Yes, it's always on channel er 997 or something, whenever we can get cheap ad space. CB
all the very best to you and the lads, Im sure you will have a great day as well as the crowds including me (although the weatherman, said its not going to be a good day for sausage dogs!)but when are they ever right? although I can think of one number from the catalog which would raise the spirits, which I am sure will be running high anyway,
Q: will you be nipping over to the second stage to perform one Abba number with Bjorn Again.
and finally but not least, I will call and see your freind Henry in Camdon as suggested, can we catch the tube accross to Victoria from there? (how far is it?) Cheers Chris MadSuggsy
No ABBA songs, sorry. You are probably on your way, but it's not that far from Victoria to Camden change at Euston about 15mins. CB
Hello Mr CB!! Will the M Section be full of madstock related stuff..?? For us abroad and happy owners of the boxset would be great!! (by the way I've pre-ordered the USB Madstock 2009) All the best from Argentina, Mr Paul B An earthquake is erupting!
Dear Paul Do you have a boxset? If so, you should be able to access the M section from anywhere in the world, with your special code, on the special card. CB
Dont want to be anal and I am sure others may be about this, but I really dont like the change of lyric on the 2nd line of S and S. It sounds like Suggs is rushing it/stumbling over it - a bit off putting at start of a song.
Please - dont turn S and S into a polished t*rd..it is a good single that doesn't need to be polished via the back passage (hence all the good reviews)...ooooooo carry on up the charts
This is twice someone has said this. Does anyone know what that polishing a t*rd expression actually means? It means trying to put a shine on something that is rubbish or crap. I don't think it is myself, I think it's a really good song. Mike wrote the song and he wanted to change the lyrics. End of subject. CB
Would you nice Madness gents please tour in the States of United? It's cruel to read of your playing in the UK and Europe generally but not so much as a by your leave for us Madness-deprived Yanks. JD Henry
do we get within touching distance of you lot when we're in the gold circle?be great to meet you after 22 gigs and 29 years to finally meet you and get a snap, its for the grandkids you understand!
Dear Alan Pack it in, that's 2 consecutive messages, I appreciate your loyalty though, it makes it all worthwhile. You have a few more gigs to go and it might happen thanks for the support XX. In the golden Wonderbar you will be 2 miles from the stage, ordinary tickets are 5 miles from the stage, 10 miles from the toilets and 3 yards from the kebab stands and bars. CB
Dear Chrissy, thanks to the band for the great gigs @ Berlin Spandau-Citadelle in 2006 and 2009! It was fantastic!!! My 2 questions Do you bring it on CD or/and DVD ? Or as a uSB stick? And do you come back soon @ Berlin, please? Your Berlin fan since first time Best wishes for you and the band Thomas
Dear Thomas Danke Schone..hold it! I was not there in 2006! How dare you! Anyway there is usb sticks from Rack am Ring I have heard on the internet
The direct links are:
Rock am Ring - Nürburg/Ahrweiler, 2009/06/06 http://concert-online.com/en/artist/560/live-recordings/917/1662/
Sir, I implore you to play Take it or Leave It at Madstock. Having see you boys play live may a time and seen countless tribute bands, I am still yet to hear this song; easily my favourite, live. How about it sir? Mark L
Ahhhhhh The Time I Want To Remember Being At.......But Can't Cuz I Wont Be There......It's Dawing On Me That Madstock Is In a Few Days..I Think I'm Gonna Cry :( Ahh Well....Just Wanted To Say Have A Good Madstock Gig Hun All D Best Shannan Xxxxx
Dear Shannan OK - we'll try to manage without you.. CB
Who do you think were the best relatively unknown support act that have played with you. I remember seeing you in Nottingham in March 83 and the Joboxers were unknown and pretty good. p.s any chance of a follow up movie to take it or leave it? Justin
Dear Justin In 1981 we did the pink pop Festival and there was this group called U2 on, well below us. I told them "you're pretty good, but you should change your name".
I don't know what happened to them after that. I lost touch. No TIOLI follow up. They are never any good...Apart from Godfather part 2...er.. and Aliens..and Terminator 2...well mostly crap aren't they? CB
Hello Madness Just popped by to say thanks for a great gig at Roskilde Festival in Denmark - I have never danced as much in my life as I did that sunday evening, and Night boat to Cairo in the end was brilliant! Great clothes as well - rather stylish. Thanks again, hope you'll come by Copenhagen some time.
On the 1985 Mad not Mad tour you rearranged 'Night Boat' different melody and drum beat if i remember? any chance of doing it that way on Friday? and also tell Mark to put that nice bass filler bit back in My Girl, again this was first done on the Mad not Mad tour Jane
Dear Jane Ah happy days. It was soon changed back. I liked it too. The bass filler? I don't know what you mean. We do a slower version of My Girl theses days actually. Slower intro anyway. CB
I was wondering, of all the tracks recorded over the years, what was the one you or other band members had the most difficulty recording and getting right?
All the best Andy
Dear Andy Well there are a few. Mostly we are well rehearsed. The most recent I can think of is "Let's Go" a quite simple song really, but we changed the key of it, sped it up, slowed it down, and I still think we didn't quite get it. Brilliant song though. It's on the box set in two version one is a rehearsal recording, which I think [in some ways] is better than the studio version. CB

Hi chris, im really looking forward to friday im meetin up with loads of felllow fans from the excellent madness central, starting thursday at the dc in camden. I reckon instead of getting the kids up during nightboat you should get a few people from the forum meet up on stage, i think some of them must have some amazing moves after all their years of practice and i do quite a good suggs when im singing baggy trousers on karaoke so im told.
Good luck for friday and fingers crossed the weather holds out.Darren
Dear Darren There are so many of our kids coming that there won't be room. CB
Why is the same side of the moon always facing us?
Dear Jack Lunar phase (or Moon phase) refers to the appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth. The lunar phases vary cyclically as the Moon orbits the Earth, according to the changing relative positions of the Earth, Moon and Sun. One half of the lunar surface is always illuminated by the Sun (except during lunar eclipses), and hence is bright, but the portion of the illuminated hemisphere that is visible to an observer can vary from 100% (full moon) to 0% (new moon). The boundary between the illuminated and unilluminated hemispheres is called the terminator. Contents [hide]
* 1 Overview * 2 Names of lunar phases * 3 Calendar * 4 See also * 5 External links * 6 Educational aids
Overview The lunar phase depends on the Moon's position in orbit around the Earth and the Earth's position in orbit around the sun. This diagram looks down on Earth from north. Earth's rotation and the Moon's orbit are both counter-clockwise here. Sunlight is coming in from the right, as indicated by the yellow arrows. From this diagram we can see, for example, that the full moon will always rise at sunset and that the waning crescent moon is high overhead around 9:00 AM local time.
Lunar phases are the result of looking at the illuminated half of the Moon from different viewing geometries; they are not caused by shadows of the Earth on the Moon that occur during a lunar eclipse. The Moon exhibits different phases as the relative geometry of the Sun, Earth and Moon change, appearing as a full moon when the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the Earth, and as a new moon (also named dark moon, as it is not visible at night) when they are on the same side. The phases of full moon and new moon are examples of syzygies, which occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun lie (approximately) in a straight line. The time between two full moons (and between successive occurrences of the same phase) is about 29.53 days (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes) on average (hence, the concept of a timeframe of a period of time of an approximated month was derived). This synodic month is longer than the time it takes the Moon to make one orbit about the Earth with respect to the fixed stars (the sidereal month), which is about 27.32 days. This difference is caused by the fact that the Earth-Moon system is orbiting about the Sun at the same time the Moon is orbiting about the Earth. The actual time between two syzygies is variable because the orbit of the Moon is elliptic and subject to various periodic perturbations, which change the velocity of the Moon.
It might be expected that once every month when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun during a new moon, its shadow would fall on Earth causing a solar eclipse. Likewise, during every full moon we might expect the Earth's shadow to fall on the Moon, causing a lunar eclipse. We do not observe a solar and lunar eclipse every month because the plane of the Moon's orbit around the Earth is tilted by about 5 degrees with respect to the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Thus, when new and full moons occur, the Moon usually lies to the north or south of a direct line through the Earth and Sun. Although an eclipse can only occur when the Moon is either new or full, it must also be positioned very near the intersection of Earth's orbit plane about the Sun and the Moon's orbit plane about the Earth (that is, at one of its nodes). This happens about twice per year, and so there are between 4 and 7 eclipses in a calendar year. Most of these are quite insignificant; major eclipses of the Moon or Sun are relatively rare. CB
Hi Chris Whilst listening to Our House recently, I wondered what instrument is used to start the intro to Our House? perhaps a guitar? And thanks for the MadtubeMTV stuff. Great to watch. Thanks for music as always.
Nick Thanks it's fun to film. It was something backwards, maybe me. My guitar that is. Then the bass. CB
hi, me again. can you do me a favour? basicly i hav this light weight and fold up shark costume. they say i cant wear it because it will get wet and ruined. but they are letting me take it to another festy wiv my auntie. can you tell my dad to let me wear it so he will let me please. thnx, jack
Can't believe I'm taking my son with me to see you on Friday. He's loved Madness ever since he saw Our House The Musical last year. He loves what you played at Glasto, but would love to hear 'Tomorrow's Just Another Day' as well. Go on - one for Joshua.
Have a great Madstock,
Dear Aron Ah....is there any others he likes? Take it easy with him, don't let him get squashed. CB
Their is going to be 5 of us in Nightboat to Cairo outfits and we are going to have a super smashing great time.
We have chosen Nightboat to Cairo outfits as a tribute to my Dad who passed away a little while ago aged 40 - I never got to see Madness play with him so its our litle way of ensuring he is there especially while bouncing up and down to one of 'his' songs!
Cheers Chrissy Boy...Bring that park right down! Benny D
Dear Benny So sorry to hear about your Dad, that's so young.I will try to bring the park down. CB
hi chris thanks for your advice regarding the golden circle tickets and me having all my mail forwarded since i moved.i already had that base covered but the royal mail still tried to deliver them to my old address and now aeg are telling me there stuck in highgate post office. so no red delivery card no tickets no madstock and 140 notes out of pocket. i know it aint your fault and thanks for your replies to my messages but there really should have been an official line of contact for people who baought their tickets early through trinity so these sort of situations could have been avoided. hope you have a good time in hackney and will see u at xmas hopefully (in concert not for lunch on the 25th) cheers marc
Dear Marc Erm have you moved that far from Highgate that you can't go and get them? I have ofrareded you details to our top man Jam so go anyway with some sort of proof and ID
Hey CB Got my wristbands...(((Thanx very much))) also got 2 questions, number 1) what time shall I book my cab home?...Had no times with the tickets...Number 2) my neice is 12 will she get in for free? Spunkybadger
Dear Spunkybadger We will finished about 10.45. Yes she will - but there seems to be no under age kids allowed in the Golden Wonder Circle of Life. CB
Hi chris Somebody on the message board earlier suggested the release of bed and breakfast man as a single to celebrate the re-release of OSB. What a great idea and what a great vid. Might wake up some old maddies, who jumped ship long ago.Good luck this Friday, wish I could be there, but will get the DVD if released, hopefully. Cheers John
Dear John Thanks and it is a good idea. I have told Union Square so we will see if it happens... CB
I have previous left you a comment in the past and i was pleased to see you was kind enough to reply to it, but i would like to ask you some more information about just general stuff about yourself and the rest of the band if you don't mind haha.
Graham 'Suggs' is my idol, i have loved him since i started listening to madness as a child, and i don't like to blow my own horn but i think i am a good singer and i love singing to madness but the bad thing is i know nobody where i live that like madness my age so i could not start like a band which is similar to yours so it really annoys me because i would love to be able to have a music career similar to suggs lol.
I really want to go to Madstock, my mum was going to get me some tickets for my birthday (28th just to inform you lol) but the fact that i live in North Wales and i had no way of getting down there only by train, and i don't know my way around London so that's half the reason why i could not come, but could you please let me know when you are playing close to the North Wales area?
Please get back to me ASAP.
Dear Mike I don't answer questions about gigs as I don't really know wnen we will be in Wales or anywhere else really. By the time I do, it's on this site.Or somewhere. all the best hope you see us one day in the not too far off future. CB
As some of my fellow contributors wrote: it's time for a 2-Tone/Stiff World Tour!!! We all adore The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, The(Special)Beat... and even Bad Manners... It really is time to ignore those fancy summer-festivals and get back to where it all began... So let's make a deal: we let you get the chance of making loads of money this summer, and in return you give us 'real fans' a club-tour around Europe, along with your legendary friends.Tom
I spent 93, 94 and 95 in Dalston and went to see The Nutty Boys in the Dublin Castle + Madness in Finsbury Park + Wembley Arena ("The Man in the Mad Suit Tour") where I bought the huge poster but forgot it in the cab that took me to Heathrow, back home to France. Life's unfair... Anyway I was just popping in to say HELLO I STILL LOVE YOU ! Agathe
Dear Agathe Gosh - I think the feelings mutual. Thanks for all the support.Sorry you lost the poster, that was a good one. CB
i hav been saving up my birthday money and been working with my mum in the kitchen where she works (its sum sotra resturant) to get money 4 madstock, i think i have like £250 to spend there, but then i thought " what would b on sale?" and then i thought "chris's cupboard!" so my question is - what sorta madness merch and stuff will b on sale there?
Dear jack Well done first of all, for working so hard. You sound like a good lad, your Mum should be very proud of you. Don't spend it all on us though. Put some in the bank. I would suggest the Co operative bank for ethical reasons myself plus they didn't go under. CB
hi chris, last time i saw you was at madstock 3(sorry) can you confirm that this was 1996 and were squeeze a support act. my memory is getting fuzzy, its my age you know. ps see you at carisbrooke castle aug 30th cant wait stu
Hi Chris Received my Gold Circle wristband last weekend & can't wait for Friday in Vicky Park. It will be my first Madness gig since Hammersmith Odeon sometime in 1980 when I was 15. I grew up living next door to Vicky Park & I was hoping to bring my 9 year old son who has become a big Madness fan for what would be his first ever gig but I wanted check that the 'free' under 12 admission also applied to the Gold Circle.
Dear Paul Sorry but it doesn't. Health and Safety or some such cobblers. CB
I am 40 and felt like I did when I was 10 again when I listened to 'norton folgate'! Its like going back in time when my walls were plastered in photos of you all and I dreamed of the day Suggs would finally notice me and ask me to marry him!! Thank you so much boys-you still have it!! Cant wait to see you in Brighton!! bev
Can you confirm or, indeed, deny if any Madness merchandise on sale on the day at Madstock! will also be available after the event? Preferably via the interweb. It's just I can't stand holding programme's etc. whilst enjoying the gig.
Chris PS Hope you enjoy Madstock! as much as I will.
Dear Chris Yes we will sell some merchandise and the programme is great, it hangs round your neck and has all the info on the big day and it is only the size of a credit card. CB
Hi Chris, i hope i will get my wirstband on friday . arriving in london at thursday getting a pint at the dublin castle and still hope there will be a meet & greet with you folks to geeting my 30 years old madness cover signed :-)
cheers J Paul Tjaden Wilhelmshaven Germany
Dear J Paul You find us, we will sign it.Bring your proof of purchase please, we have your details and email address. CB

Dear Wayne Probably not this time. Glad you got your tickets. CB
CB- Have the band got some golden pop nutty nugget surprises lined up for the fans Friday at Madstock? I Would love to hear Tarzan's Nuts or even Ghost Train.
Also, hope you've got your wristband to get in!! Mine came today.. I'll send it in the post to you if you want. I'll buy a ticket for the back and listen to the Chrissy Boy Jazz/Motown unplugged session happily.
Take care Odd Job Man (Stan)
Dear Stan We have one old one in mind at least. CB
I've seen you mention on here a few times that The Prince is your favourite Madness track.
1) Which version do you prefer out of the single and rerecorded LP version? (I prefer the LP version by a good distance - much more bite to it with Woody's drums and stuff sounding miles better and I like the false-ish ending too.)
CB:The 2Tone one.I like the bass overload ending which broke on of the VU meters in the studio.
2) Was The Prince (and Madness) rerecorded for the album because Stiff didn't have the rights?
PS: Romsey's close to my patch so let me know if you guys require curry house recommendations.
Are there restrictions on bringing beer into victoria park on friday as i am always confused sometimes have loads before and the while coming in people walk past me with cases on shoulder and theres with 4 hours to go already half cut.
could you please let me know
thanks alot to MADNESS an AEG for sorting out trinty house cock up. The band should make more of this as i cannot see so called bigger bands doing this
Thanks again Sparky
Dear Sparky No problem it's not really us that does all the hard work sorting it all out it's Jam and Katy. Beer um...I think they will take it off yer.Sorry. CB
really excited that my childhood idols are coming to our little market town of Romsey at the weekend.(surely the biggest thing to happen to the town since Charles and Di honeymooned here. but don't let that put you off) However, wife is due to give birth to baby number 2 on the 15th so its going to be touch and go whether i'll actually be there.(the gig that is not the delivery room) Man! i blame the parents. My first gig was seeing you play at Southampton Gaumont on the 7 tour where you made a shy 11 year olds day by coplimenting me on my homemade shrinky dink baggy trousers badge after the gig. You must have heard it loads of times but thanks for getting me into music, the "event" videos on TOTP that were discussed next day at school, and for spending all my pocket money for me. Great days & great memories mmmm!.
Thats enough ego massaging for one day. Hope to see you on Saturday.
ps the Bishops Blaize is rubbish. the Old House at Home is much nicer.
Dear Woley Thanks for the memories and good luck with that baby. The second ones are usually bang on time so you'll be OK. Of course all the best of luck to your wife as well CB
Hi Chris I have loads of great memories relating to Madness, like doing the nutty train with my mate circa 1980 through the corridors of Sharples High (Bolton) blasting out Madness tunes on a little ghetto blaster (is that classed as broadcasting? Send me the bill I’ll pay you in beer). Me and my mate doing the nutty train across the empty dance floor at a local night club whilst they had lost power to the decks and the crowd insisting we did it a couple more times. The first dance at my wedding, It Must Be love. Lee swinging over me at the GMEX in Manchester on a rope tied to the lighting rig (not certain what year that was, there was a boxing ring on stage and Lee was dressed as a boxer??? but I’m sure it wouldn’t be allowed now). The first Madstock. To name but a few.
Anyway my question is what is your most memorable moment with Madness at a gig or otherwise?
Dear Steve There have been many I must say. I was very emotional when I re joined the boys after two years out. I suddenly realised it was nice of them to have me back. CB
Question: hi chrissy boy we got our gold cicle tickets today cant wait till friday will you be playing bed and breakfast man been a fan since 79 seen you lads about 30 times cant get another of it still got my first madness single two tone lable prince buster 30 years ago see u guys friday lee golesworthy

Dear Mr. Foreman, Dear Suggs, Dear Mr. Smyth, Dear Mr. Barson, Dear Woody, Dear Kix, Dear Bedders, I am a 39-year old lad from Germany, being half-german (mother) and half-english (dad from Stoke-on-Trent). I first heard you in 1981 and since then I became a very special friend of your music. My personal “highlight” was your concert at Wembley arena in December 2006, and I will always emotionally remember that moment when all your children entered the stage during Night boat to Cairo! The reason why I hope you will receive these few lines is my congratulation for your superb new album “Norton Folgate”!
I love the great lyrics of “We are london”, the reggae of “Dust devil”, the nutty sound of “On the town” and the extraordinary and marvellous “Rainbows” and “MKII”. In my opinion this album as amongst the best you ever produced! As you are and were always very close to your fans I will kindly ask you, if you could send me a photograph of the band signed by all 7 members.
Thank you very much in advance and please keep on making great and true british music! Yours Roy Murphy
Dear Roy Thanks. I am going to change my intro bit to no gigs questions,no autographs, sorry. CB
Hi Chris, It's Mitch (singer) from The Communicators, I was clearing out some crap from my office and found the programme from when you guys did the Peel Festival at the Isle of man 2 years ago, I dont know if you'll remember this but I threw a beer mat with the name of the band up on to the stage and nearly took your eye out???? Was a great night and you picked the mat up and took it with you when you'd finished. Have been a huge fan since i can remember, was at the first Madstock in 92 and will be there on Fri (promise i wont try and take your eye out this time ehh!) Send Jim my regards, see you Fri. Much Love, Mitch.x
Dear Mitch Yes you vandal you.I have played that beer mat to death. thanks CB
Hey Chris - remember meeting you back in '83 during the "Rise & Fall" tour at Newcastle City Hall. Its great to see the band back together again. Its not a question as such more just to say that did it not irritate you that Madness were just seen by the music press as a "goofy, funtime" band when all true fans knew that the songs went far deeper than that. I mean I'm referring to stuff from the first few albums, songs like "Not Home Today", "Razor Blade Alley", "Tomorrow's Dream" and especially "Blue Skinned Beast". Its only now that you're finally getting the credit long overdue as a "serious" band. Incidentally how about a 30 year on "2 Tone" tour at a few stadiums next summer mate. Given that the Specials have reformed and the remnants of the Beat are still gigging it could be a winner. I for one would love to see all 3 bands sharing the stage again and I reckon I wouldn't be the only one. Best wishes to you and the boys and thanks for all the memories. sean Kilminster
Dear Sean The press perception of us was a bit they are wacky isn't it? It never bothered me much, although I think some of our lyrics and subject matter/themes are up there with Morrissey and many other great English wordsmiths [no pun intended] The set list does need a revamp. However, even though it seems we are always on tour, we never rehearse much. I would like to do some old gems but we never get the time to have a go. We might do a really old song at Madstock, the first person to guess it gets er..I dunno, a nice feeling? 2Tone tour ah, if only... CB
It's time to return to the states w/ a series of east coast/Mid-Atlantic dates. I saw the English Beat last night & wonder why Madness won't package a tour headlining the new wave of ska acts such as * dream line-up .Goldfinger , Less Than Jake , Reel Big Fish & the Mighty Mighty Bosstones before Madness closes the night IN A PACKED STADIUM ! Time to come across the pond . Thanks , Dave
yes the wristbands are here! good job as I dont think I would of been very good at climbing over high fences although I would of had a good try! I will see you there but you wont see me!lol x lynn lawlor
Hi Chris, Just to let you know got my two golden circle tickets today. Thanks for all your efforts in finding out about them and keeping us all informed. Lets hope that this is the year you get your brit award, long overdue. see ya Friday. Tim Higgs

Dear Chris, compliments on your show at the Roskilde-festival the other day. Top notch stuff, and you all seemed to be having genuine fun. Any chance of a future gig where you'll be playing your new album in its entirety? I mean, it really is all killer no filler, ain't it? (and i'm talking expanded edition here). Make sure you do a try-out in The Netherlands!
Hi Chris hows it going? I know you are a very busy man but could you wish my brother Ashley a happy birthday for me! By the way Chris what time is it I think its SHOWTIME!!!!Good Luck for Madstock it will be a show stopper. Best wishes Bazza

hi chris are you boys going for a beer before the gig ? if so come on over to the bishops blaize in the town and party with the gang, we could talk about tractors and all things countryside to get you in the mood for the gig, if not i could always come to the after gig party with you!! ;)
Thanks but I never drink before a show. Now during well, that's another matter. After I will be swiftly on my way, my man. CB
Hi Chris, top site for a top band! I am currently sitting in my flat waiting for the Postman (still no Gold Circle tickets!!) and thought I'd cook up some 'Eggs, Bacon, Beans and a Fried Slice!!!' - any chance of that getting an airing at Madstock???
Less than a week now, can't wait! Just need the Postie to turn up with them now! All the best, Gav
Dear Gav Thanks. You didn't REALLY have a fried slice did you...yeeuurgh! They WILL come. CB
Hi, TLONF continues the Madness tradition of assorted vocal spoken word parts - have you ever done any? I've always imagined that duty was down to Chas and Lee but I do wonder every listen who shouts "Only a fiver!" and "Have a banana" etc...
I also want to wish you all the best for next Friday at Madstock, even though you were nasty about my own musical efforts you wry rapscallion you.
Dear Cameron I shout "cut" at the end of....er...what was it? Keep up with the music, don't let me put you off. CB
I stumbled across your You Tube collection of on stage and behind the scenes stuff. I saw on telly that you were also filming bits and pieces while playing at Glastonbury (great gig too) and wondered if you had any plans to put more stuff up on there. Paul
Dear Paul Yes - I always add stuff to madtubemtv.
This is us yesterday en route to Sweden on the Madness plane MadforceOne CB
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply on the On the Town Singer, just wondered which version you prefer? In my opinion the M session version sounds better but with no offence to Rhodar. Also glad to say my Golden Circle tickets have turned up. Rgds, Murph (Armed Forces Scooter Club)
Dear Murph it's Rhoda for me. Glad you tickets turned up. CB
hi chris noticed a question a week or so ago about bed and breakfast man nearly being released as a single.well why not release it this year it could be used to promote one step beyond re_ release and best of album.it already has a promo and is very popular with all audiences you play to surely a winner all round. i wonder what your thoughts are. cheers dave

Dear Jenny Sorry - I don't do that service for love or money you are very nice though, to try. CB
Hi Chris. Sian from Perth here. She who spoiled her plea to you with the Lee/tits comment.
How ya goin' mate? I told you in my original post that I'd bought GS (Golden effin circle) tickets for me and my daughter for her 21st didn't I? Well she turned 21 three days ago and the 3rd leg of our pilgrimage is now complete. The flight, staying with my cuz in Wiltshire (oo arr), and getting to Wales. Fourth leg next Thurs when we go to Lundinium. Meet peeps at the DC, dirnk, sleep, then..... you know the rest. Never been to a Madstock before. I'm told it's good.
In Perth I made that "Liberate my folgate, Lee" banner, but in London, your home, I'll wave the Aussie flag just for you.
Lots of love, Sian xxx P.S. Can you pleeease wear your bowler at M/stock? Soo cute.
Dear Sian Well I'll be bowled er blowed. Good on yer. CB
Hello Chris !! you ok ? HOW come you have the job of answering e-mails and stuff .. is it because your the Nerd of the bunch !! ha,ha only joking.. or is it that the others are a bit Dim when it comes to computers ?? Mike Thompson
Dear Mike No it's because I feel duty bound to you all. It takes me 20 mins a day at most. Once we have done Madstock my workload will halve.. CB
Cheers Chris for answering question on what time you should be on. Il try to make it for then but if I am a tad late can you hang on. My Gold Ticket Wristband arrived today I cant wait. Will Be on The Train From Wolverhampton Midday so Il be there for sure
I got in touch with aeg today as I am one of the unlucky ones and not got my golden circle wristbands! No because I trust you chris that they will turn up! although I have been practising how to climb over large fences just in case!!!! Lynn

Dear Matty I know you! You were in the Baggy Trousers video. You are my son ya shaggy beard. love Dad x
Firstly, this isn't a gig question :-)its not even close to a gig question....honest. Just thought id let you know that Epsom Downs is easy access for me if you were to be ever thinking f doing a gig there...and if you were alredi planning one, im sure u would have let us know in the Gigs section....however if you by some weird occurance have any more information than is on that page...please do let me know in reply.
Mark It is a gigs question - bad boy...At least gig related.. CB
I'm a happy and proud owner of what it seems to be a quite rare madness t shirt, bought in Montpellier, south of Phrance, with the name of the band made of letters from different brands (with the "e" from durex ;-),and letters from mars bars or guinness) I was wearing it when i went to see you in brighton, in 2006 and a mate crossed the crowd to meet me coz he was wearing the same tee ! we both thought we had the only existing one ! How many of it was sold ? tell me. I'll be wearing it at your Paris gig.
Keep moving, Fred
Dear Fred We sold millions. OK I don't know a few hundred maybe but I remember the shirt, it was quite funny. CB
Just a message to say thanks for your concerns and emails regarding mine and many others tickets, i received mine yesterday!! I was very relieved and happy to have received it!! Looking forward to next friday and can't wait for the next single... and B side!
All the best Stevie P
Dear Stevie I'm glad you got them and I'm glad you told me. CB
hi chris totally gutted cant make alot of your shows due to current financial climate. But hoping to make Nottingham with my two sons who are carrying on the family tradition of listening to real music, they are 6 & 7 years old is there a designated area for young kids. Appreciate it if you could let us know. All the best, you are still doing a fabulous job as you full well know. maddad
Dear Maddad I would say do not take them right up to the front row for sure.I always see kids getting squashed, it drives me nuts. CB
hi chris the last time i saw the madness group was when i got you a parking space where i used to work at the mout house hotel in chester, mind you, you fab lot did sign three of my madness singles for me, which hold pride of place framed and hung un my living room, as i am a loyal fan, i grew up with you lot. Any way my question is when are you going to do a gig near to chester maty, all the dates i see are loads of driving away and ime working.... its crap being a chef!!!! (spike)
Dear Spike When was this? All those chefs make a fortune, don't kid me.I just noticed its a gigs question!....AAAAHHHHHHHH! I'm off to bed. CB
hi chris; just another question i bought the re-issue of complete madness on union square records.when your back catalogue is re-released will there be any demo versions un-released tracks on the new versions of your re-issues.just listened to the liberty of norton folgate again (just gets better with every listen)a class album;like every madness album.check out m.i.s comic no 1 i got a drawing printed in that edition (drew it when i was 15 (m.i.s 000914).cheers andy
Dear Andy You are the second person to tell me he had a drawing in the MIS comic. The last one had a picture in the last issue so you are bookends. There will be extra stuff on the re issues but not too much. CB
Im 18 years old and madness have been my favourite band for many years! I've seen you twice and so far ive not been disappointed! I saw you guys at HMV Oxford Street and got my album signed, its made my year so far. Ive been looking forward to madstock for sooo long, im sure it will make my year even better! I cant wait, good luck guys :) Amy Coffey
hi chris i hope you and the lads are well as you know i have had a moan about lack of airplay of the bands latest singles but today i got a nice surprise pure fm in stockport played sugar and spice there breakfast presenters saying it will be on their upcoming new playlist and gave it 9 out of 10 at last a station that has taste they do play alot of madness songs and they were also raving about t.l.o.n.f which we all know is a classic album when will the single be released chris. many regards mark
Thanks Mark The 3rd of August is what I was told earlier. CB
Hi CB just a quick line to say thanks for answering my question about the sunglasses, ref goggles, i have now ordered a pair and with a bit of luck should be with me any day, and did you also, know that the ones suggs wears are also worn by a certain mr james 007 bond himself, is suggy trying to tell us something, but the main reason for the email is to say a very big thank to you and the rest of the boys for sorting out the ticket cock up, yes i have them in my hand as i type (no jokes please) 3 golden circle wristbands, and with a postal strike on too, once again many thanks CB see you at vicky park. Robbie
Dear Robbie I didn't sort anything out, I just tried to calm everyone down and er give out some information. The thing was, the tickets were always going out at the last minute but Trinity Street going under made everyone really panic. CB
So how can I pay for something from the shop with PayPal? It says it's accepted, but when I go through checkout there's no PayPal option. I have emailed the helpdesk but all they said was as long as the order's over a fiver (it is) then it should be OK
Hi Chrissy, I just wanted to drop you a message to say i got my signed album cover yesterday, so thank you so much. :0) You have made a big Madness fan very happy. Say thanks to Jim for me too... a very helpful chap. :o) Anywho... take care and i can't wait to see you next week at Madstock!
Dear Rich What about the Gold tickets? Did you get them? I assume you did. You could have told me..Bad boy. CB
Oh So I Can Easily Pass Maths And Geography But The Mischief-ness Still Lasts , I Am a 14 Yr Old Just Trying To Grow Up But Not worried About The Mysteries Of Life ,I Just Want to Be Free As A Bird Not Giving a Care Everyone Says I Have To Go To School And I Better Start To Learn ,I Am The One who Won’t Grow Up , Too Much Going On In My Head ,I Am The One Who will Not sleep At Night I Would Rather Stay Up Skanking Instead. The One Who Wouldn’t Grow Up That’s What Every One Says. The One Who Couldn’t Grow Sometimes Thinks She’d Be Better Off dead
But I Am Not an Idiot Child , I am Just Flashing Through Life , I Do Not Want To Grow Up, I Want To Have Fun so Why Should I stop . I Am Not An Idiot Child You Want Me To Listen To You ,Well maybe You Should Sit Down And Listen For a Bit then I Would Shut Up
The Government And Minister Of Education Want To Sort This Fight Out, The say ‘’Clam Down Miss McBride It Un-Acceptable To Shout,, Well so Sorry To Disappoint You Mr. Head of School But It’s Being Going On Too Long Now Going On The Mitch Feels Right Territory To Me Even Though Its Wrong……… I wish I Could Be sent Away For A Year Or Even A Day Where I Could Be Talking To So Deeply Then Maybe If Your Lucky I Will Behave Less Violently

Dad showed me how to do it , my idiot child cover :) Shannan Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Dear Shannan I likes it, I does, Very good 9/10. What pray tell, is "going on the mitch"? Last verse was a bit pony. Did you really do this, or was it your Dad? CB
Hello madness, just wanted to say that i cant wait till madstock. It'll be my first proper gig and what gig it'll be. Urm one question though. Do you have any idea when it'll finish? I'm about thinking getting home on the bus, whether it'll be a nightbus job or not. Ok actually two questions. Should I be worried about the fact that my tickets havent shown up and that they are going to be in my dad's name but he won't be coming with us? Other than that...I CAN'T WAIT ^_^
P.s urm if my email is going to show up can you not put it on the site please. cheers rachael
Dear Rachel We will finish at 4am. ha ha not really, that's WELL past my bedtime. Your tickets will come - what sort where they? I will send you details to our team. Let me know if they turn up. CB PS Love the e mail address, love. We never put them on the site, but oh my goodness, that's a good one.
Hi Chris, great news, i have moved into a bungalow now, no more Brian Potter stairlift trouble weyyyy heyyy. Bad news is i cant make it to Madstock . Any chance you and the boys can send me a signed programme, thats very nice of ya chuck ( he he he ). Iv'e spoken to Thommo's son on Face book, nice lad. There is a rumour your doing an Xmas tour, (Manchester ? )Guess what, more importantly, my wheels are all faded, they need new signings guys, if there is a chance of a programme can you let me know so i can send you my new address. Good luck at Madstock, plenty of guys & gals from Madness Central will be there, can you say Hi to them all on stage for me, thanks Chris, hope to meet you again this year, Sharon xxx
Dear Sharon that's a shame. Nice you've got a new place though. I'll see what I can do, chuck. You know I'll forget. CB

Got my wrist bands today. Bring it on Chrissy Boy. Cheers. See you there, and don't forget your mates. It's amazing i got them today because the Post Office is on strike in Islington.... And i'm one of 'em !!!!! Bloody Post...Bloody Me...Bloody Hell. Paul
Dear Paul Get back to work, but do not cross a picket line, brother. Solidarity! Power to the Posties! CB
Hi Obout Madstock`s tickets: I`m outside UK, so I have to recive my ticket from box office before fest. Ticket was bought by my wife. It is possible to recive ticket, if it was bought by other person. If yes, what should I have(my wife`s ID, confirment of payment) ? Greetings Kalus
Dear Kalus Right - that is a hard one. Bring some proof of purchase and a letter from your wife with you. I have sent your details to our team. It will be OK. CB
I have been in contact with aeg yesterday as id not had my tickets yet plus wanted to check delivery method due to postal strike re the golden circle tickets, they reply yesterday saying they been sent recorded delivery.
You may want to warn the fans who keep asking you about them to be patient as there are strikes within royal mail going on this weds, thurs, friday.
thanks Alan Glad to see you have a calm head.... CB
I'm quite sure you get this question all the time, so pardon me if answering such queries gets annoying.
Would the band consider playing a single date in the western US? It's a bit of a long trip, so I wouldn't be surprised if your mates said no to a single show. If that's the case, then how many would be the minimum? My friend's a promoter and looking to book interesting shows. I recommended Madness without knowing whether it was possible.
As an old Yank fan of Madness (I first heard of you guys during a family trip to the UK in 1980), I'd love nothing more than to find a way for the band to play some dates in the US again.
Dear Allen I don't really answer these type of questions, but you have written a lot, so I will say we would ove to come to the USA sometime but I don't know when that will happen.Subscribe to a Madness newsletter just in case we do. CB
Hi Chris,Im a long time fan and I tookup guitaring as you influenced me with your style. What effect pedal do you use and how may guitars have you got? I like your black strat the best.Which one is it? Cheers and see ya at the next gig! Big Al
Dear Big Al Thanks. I use a Zoom er..effects box.G2.1u http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/g21u/ However in the studio Iuse lots of things. I like the Les Paul and The SG best.Although a while ago, I used the Strat as they were being serviced and I liked it too. CB
I've only just got around to hearing the S+S radio edit!!! I know I'm not about to win any popularity contests but I'm really worried you're heading back to polishing t*rds ...so sorry, couldn't stand back and let history repeat itself..felt I needed to stand up and be counted ..Whose idea was it to change the beginning lyrics?
Hope it's not to late for a rethink?
P.s Im not sure why I am so concerned .. just felt a strong sence of wrongness about it all .. Hope not to offend , just felt I couldn't not say something on this occasion.
Don't hate me, liz :'( x
Dear Liz Polishing a what? Are you saying the song is a T**D! Er flippin hell, it was just a slight change of the lyrics not a dance remix..Mike changed them and he wrote it, after all. Calm down and take a tablet.. CB
My favourite Madness coincidence is that your first 20 singles charted in the top 20 but that your 21st single Uncle Sam peaked at 21.....however I'm also enjoying the fact that today on the 7th of the 7th my Dad reaches the ripe old age of 77. He's a big Madness fan whose favourite songs are prospects and sarahs song and reckons hunchback would be a great single....ok the last bits untrue but the age thing is no lie. Could you say Happy Birthday to Mr Cyril Carden or just something like "nice one Cyril".
Cheers 'n' beers,
Dear Vice Sorry I missed this one, I have been a bit behind. 77777777 Amazing eh? my wedding anniversary is 7/7/. Happy belated birthday then."Nice one Cyril, nice one son, nice one Cyril, let's have another one". CB
Just wondered have you all been to Dennis Severs' house? What did u think of it? On a similar line of enquiry did you all read the Trial of Elizabeth Cree? Just curious how many of the band have? ..and are the band Ackroyd fans?
P.s Non-madness related but I had a great swim yesturday (still f5ing) liz
Dear Liz I think the boys did a photo session there, but I have never been there. Peter Ackroyd has a few fans in the band, that's for sure. Swimming is very good for you - keep it up. CB
hi chrissy boy any luck with changeing the set list for madstock, you said you would talk to the lads. maybe more stuff from the album .the old chestnuts and tomorrows dream would be great.i bought a pair of shoes from bbc in camden and they are the most comfortable shoes in the world.ging to buy the black and white brouges like suggs next week see you at madstock.im on the guest list michael farmer
Dear Michael Yes those shoes are good aren't they? Get the George Cox Robot black and white ones.Tell Nick I sent you, I am on a small commision.Set list er, yes I'll give it a go but we never rehearse.. CB
Hi CB Have you or any other of the band ever spent any time down at suggs beach hut at whitstable in kent. love tlonf work of genius. brit award next year 4sure maybe mercury music prize as well regards, mike.
Dear Mike Thanks for the kind thoughts. I can't say I have. Thommo has probably turned up and eat and drank Suggs out of hut and home, but no, I have my own in Lancing, don't yer know.. CB
hi all how would i go about getting sheet music for drums (tabs) im just not sure how to ta ben
Dear Ben I give up. A typical drummer. Sheet music? Just hit the f***** things hard, try to keep in time with the rest of the band, keep the drum riser level, etc etc, I hope Woody isn't reading this....
OK - there is a thing called GOOGLE. A SEARCH engine. I just looked up sheet music for drums and found this;
hello chrissy boy, just want to say cant wait for madstock 2009..was there with the boys in 94,so its been a few years now but this time it will be with the mrs...so we will see you there on the 17th..all the best from your us welsh fans...p.s..glastonbury was pure class..... kev brezh.
Dear Kev Thanks - and yakki dah or whatever. I met tha tKelly Jones the other day. His har is 4 inches high
Ey up Leeds lass ere. Can nobody throw plastic cups of pi*s at the Madstock? cos I've got gold tickets and forgot bout that when booked! was glad I was seated at O2 at Crimbo!!! (got new fred perry) my 14 year old will be there with braces and docs. Can't wait. Charlie n Di
Dear Charlie n Di Well, why do think it's called the GOLDEN circle? CB
Gold Circle Madstock... Tickets for sale face value
Hoping you'll put this up... No longer going to madstock, have two gold circle tickets which I'll sell for original price if anyone interested.. would rather sell on here than make money on ebay.. Also if you happen to come from cornwall have 2 adult return train tickets for the day (sleeper cabin included in the return!)... angelic imp
Dear Angelic That's a shame. I hope you get them to someone. Try Madness Central, they could probably help you out.Do you actually have them? CB
Please solve an argument for me - who sings on this track? Thank you so much x carol
Dear Carol Yes, easy peasy, it's Suggs what's out of Madness. I know him, I do. Oh sorry - do you mean the girl vocals? either Rhoda Dakar on the album, or Amber Jolene on the M section download. So stop your arguing, unless you think it's Madonna or someone. CB
Dear D At the time of all this, we were rehearsing in a residential studio in the middle of nowhere, right out in the countryside, no TV, no nothing, I think it was near Brighton. So we were a bit isolated. Thommo and I came home early, just when all the Live Aid thing kicked off. We were only asked to be in a photo, that was all. We were too late to get there, by the time we got home. It all happened so quick, as you know and the song was done and dusted without us being in the photo or playing on the song. As far as I can recall, we were never asked to do the Live Aid show, which was a shame. We recorded Starvation for the people of Ethiopia as by coincedence a fan had seen the same documentry that Sir Bob Geldof had seen. He came into our studio and suggested the whole thing. Of course our song got lost in all the kerfuffle and in fact it was hard to get radio play for it, as fabtastic Radio One had the sort of attitude of, "well we've had one chariddy record this month, let's get back to being jolly". I hope none of this sounds a bit bitter, as what Sir Bobby G did was truly fantastic, he is a great man and no, I am not taking the pi**. We just had a better song, that's all.
Furthermore, I just looked it up as I can't remember the name of the bloke who walked into our office and there is quite a good bit on wikepedia.
Na, not in the band mate, just seeen em a few times now, DC in Dec, The Jamm, Brixton (The Specials aftershow party) and Glasto, everytime blown me away, just like you guys do! They've got that same energy, cracking tunes too, bought their album, have you heard it? there is a song about Thomo on it! Thanks for the reply. P.S I would love that DVD of Madstock 92 released too.xxxxxx Robin
Hi Chrissy Boy I was born at 137 Highgate Rd (the big house called Southampton House Academy) in 1958. Our gardens backed onto each other, when your family lived at Mortimer Terrace. My mum (sadly now she's dead) said that your dad had a skiffle band. Do you remember my brother's Norman and John I also had an older brother Bob? I fell off the wall of our garden into your garden when I was 5. I remember we all used to play around the back near the railway line.We moved to Kings Cross in early 1966. PS I love your new song NW5. I hope you reply. PS my nickname is Ell, no one calls me Sheila
Dear Sheila Yes! I remember you, or more I remember Norman, he was a right laugh. I used to climb on my wall then shimmy along to your one. It must have been a twenty foot drop from your wall to our garden or was it just because we were kids and everything seemed bigger then? My brother Nat still lives there. Say hello to Norman, will you? love Chris
Hi Chris, hope you are well. I'm counting down to Madstock. I'd like to know if the rest of the band push you into the cupboard and only let you out for gigs recordings etc? What's it like in there? Would you be able to pass me a tin of beans while you're there? SteveR
Dear Steve There seems to be this misconception that I am in a cupboard. Actually, it is in one of the rooms in my Hove mansion. But yes, they keep me here. CB
Hello Young Chris Can you let me know where you get your two tone Brogues from as Mrs Flash has said that she'll buy me a pair ? I think she might get a shock ! All the best , congrats on the ICON award , but for many, you all have been for many years ! The Flash
Dear Bazza Sure. The British Boot Company http://www.britboot.co.uk/GeorgeCoxRobot.html Tell them I sent you. CB
songs like ghost train, cardiac arrest etc that dont see the light of day anymore why not do a medley like what quo do when they tour that way the fans get what they want.
I know i sent a message about a good idea for an album title for the new greatest hits. How about "M" as the title as "M" can have lots of meanings inc Mega, Marvellous, Magnificant, Madness, tony
Dear Tony We could never learn a medley but I like it. Although someone would say we missed the best bit out of some song.M could be...Moody,Morose...er, Muddy, Mundane, Monday, Muggy,Metabolism. - Hey! it's a good idea! CB
First off, congrats for the fantastic gigs at Gatcombe Park and Glastonbury and on the brilliant new album. Are you planning on releasing "On the town" as a single? It is an absolute classic (in an album full of them)
Dear Andy Thanks - We will get round to it, I hope. CB
well done on your recent award guys just read a quote on teletext from suggs saying he wants to record a really quick album so i guess itll b out in 2115 then lol martin
dear Martin 2115! You cheeky b..! It'll take longer than that! That was MY idea! How dare he? If we can all get together in a rehearsal room, I think we could do it. Set a few parameters and GET DOWN! CB

Dear Col Scooter rally? Really?...ah it all makes sense.. CB
Chris Re. The Chair Hard to explain ! not as stylish as Captain kirks or as practicle as Jimmy Savilles more like Blofeld's but brown. Re.Mel's Drinking Its getting worse then ! Re.LONF Sounds great Haz going to download on his I'Gizmo thing, but would like to know if you get the chance to meet Damon Albarn again, can you ask him What "Beetlebum" was all about ? Happy Touring Gazzler and Family
Ah, my dear old Gazzler. how I miss the sea frets and warking to Wark.I would send you a copy of the album but I ain't been around much lately. It will take him ages to put it on the old 1970's ipod won't it? I am 2 days behind with these replies sosorry Mel gets the hump.. all the best Chris
This is a very silly question, but hat type of hat does your key board player normally wear, the round felt one, with the wide brim. As my husband wants one, and I don't know what its called to buy him one. Many Thanks Jo
PS - Great set at Glastonbury, wasn't there in person, but saw it on the telly
Thanks Jo. now Mike's hat I don't know where he got it from, probably Lidl, or as he calls it T Q Maxx. I love him, he is so funny. Look up pork pie hat on the internet and you will find something like it.In fact, I just did and found this brilliant site http://www.hatsonline.com/
Dear nutty boys, If it would be possible at your forthcoming gig on Exit festival in Novi Sad , put some nice older songs, such as "Sign of the Times" or "Razor Blade Alley" ,on the set list.I was at your concert on Sziget festival in 2007.and heard performance of "Reach Up" which amazed me.Brilliant cover! Repeat it on Exit, please.
Best wishes from old fans!
Bora and Grba from Novi Sad,Serbia
Thanks Bora and Grba I don't think we'll do those songs - sorry. Er - what's Reach Up?
Hi Chris, I was wondering if you could help, I downloaded your new album before it was released and on the track On the Town it seems to be a different backing singer with Suggs. I know the album version I received had Rhoda Dakar singing on the track but the version I downloaded sounded like someone else. Can you please shed any light on this? Many thanks, Murph (Armed Forces Scooter Club)
Dear Murph Yes. It was a girl called Amber Jolene. She did some other vocals on the album so Clive got her to sing it. CB
hi, will you be performing at the o2 this year enjoyed your last two shows there and doing well with your filming, also do you rember when you used to play football tournaments at cliffe my dad used to play against you, would you ever do it again and finally if i sent a poster or something like that to you would you be able to get the band to sign it,
henri, 15, shorne - kent
Dear Heidi We have been asked I said not it's pushing it. So we will probably do it..Football tournaments? Signed stuff have ago send it to our management the address is under contacts.. CB
Alright Chris! Just wondering if you had heard the Kid British track Our House Is Dadless and if so what dyou make of it? Caught it on Radio 1 and thought they had added Our House to the playlist ! All the best,Stuart
Dear Stuart I like it myself. I was sent it for approval ages ago. Cb

Hi Chris Much enjoyed the PinkPop gig a month ago. Question, is it possible to put up the Mp3 download for " a Perfect place" once more...I had it but I lost it. Put it in the M Section anywhays.... Thank you and keep rocking man !!! John de la Rue
Dear John Thanks - we enjoyed it too. I will try to remember to put that song up. CB
You were WOWWWWW at Glastonbury (Was there anyone else there?!!!) Hope you and the boys can perform at Manchester in the not too distant future and then this (49 year old cough cough!!!) Surveying Undergrad can have something nice to "measure up" apart from buildings and materials Hope to see you soon Take care Caz xxxxx
I was amazed at Glasto when Suggs said he fractured his ribs and still managed to play and swing on those wires! A couple of years ago I walked in to a wheelie bin and caught me on the ribs! (or did the wheelie bin walk into me?) Took 2 months for the badly bruised ribs to heal completely! What remedy did Thommo have to get through that day?Hoping to see you guys at Romsey in good 'ol Hampshire :)Stevie B
Dear Stevie I thought it was another Thommo fantasy, but Steve Turner one of our Brass Monkeys saw it happen. Thommo's guardian angel has a full time job.. CB
Fantastic gig at Glastonbury - only saw it on tv as i live in Spain, hence my question - why are you not doing a gig here? Have been a fan since the beginning and have been to all the previous Madstock gigs. My hubby is a mad ACDC fan and he has just seen them in Barcelona - said it was fab. Just wish you were comming here too. Bloody credit crunch cant afford airfare to uk. Hope it all goes brill - will watch on youtube lol!!!! shazza
Dear Shazza We did the Riviera club in Madrid recently, it was fantastic, I hope we come back soon. we did a festival in Barcelona last year as well. Your husband has impeccable taste. CB
Hi Chris, Hope you and the gang are well, it certainly looks like it. Saw the Glasto set - awesome as usual. Can't get to Madstock this year but will certainly be at Wollaton Pk Notts. So the question is this......I managed to get backstage, finally after 30yrs of trying at Newcastle Dec 2006, Did I upset someone 'cos u aint been near since'. I can send a map/AtoZ if you want? As a Sunderland supporter I think the Geordies could do with a visit after the year they've had.... Come On Lads Its been a while.....
Dear Mark Thanks - Next time ya Makem. The toon army will return! CB
hi from me and my family all huge fans! ive wondered for a while now y is suggs called suggs and what does equinamous mean? And congrats on new album its truly great! nice goin at glasto!! Jeffery family, ps wat do u guys prefer tea or coffee?
Dear Ben Thanks
Suggs picked his nickname from a book of old Jazz singers.
equanimous - in full control of your faculties; "the witness remained collected throughout the cross-examination"; "perfectly poised and sure of himself"; "more self-contained and more dependable than many of the early frontiersmen"; "strong and self-possessed in the face of trouble" self-collected, self-possessed, self-contained, collected, poised composed - serenely self-possessed and free from agitation especially in times of stress; "the performer seemed completely composed as she stepped onto the stage"; "I felt calm and more composed than I had in a long time"
well chris 30 years can it really be that long when i brought my totone with prince buster on it seen the band about 30 times and still when you come out on stage, the hairs on the back of my neck go up. Will you be playing any tracks from the one step beyond album especially bed and breakfast man and nice man george whose newsagents is on the corner? Got my gold circle ticket with the lads, can't wait for the 17th July seeing you guys on stage. Let's see if we can make a little earthquake in Victoria Park.would love to meet you guys one day can you fix that chris it would be a dream come true yours lee
Dear lee Yes 30 years has gone by rather quick has'nt it? Bed and Breakfast Man is usually in the set. Meeting us, well, it's hard enough for me to get hold of some of the band myself thes days.
Hi Chris, I am big, big,Fan of your for years. What did you do Between 1990 & 2005, Apart from gigs.I Late saw you in Finbury park,& have just seen you at newbury races,Fantastic Still. You are just as good now as back then. Dear Andy Your worries are totally understood. They are going out now but just to put the tin hat on it, there is a postal strike in some areas this week. CB
Hey Chris, First of all: I enjoyed watching the Pinkpop- and Glastonbury gigs (as Belgian, I witnessed it on the telly)! Anyway, as it's the bands 30th anniversary, don't you think it is time to release a dvd-box, with loads and loads of Madness-material (live-registrations, behind the scene footage...) from the past 30 years (including 2009 performances)? Keep on being nutty as long as possible please...! Greetz from Belgium, Tom
Dear Tom Thanks for all that. The DVD could be possible, except so much stuff is owned by TV companies and so on. CB
I can see you've had loads of like minded fans panicking at not having heard whats happening with our tickets. Thankgod we had e-mail the other day from aeg saying that we should have them by 9th July[has to be a good omen its my hubbys 40th that day].
Really looking forward to seeing you boys again well worth the wait for the new album even though we've been hearing some of the tracks for quite sometime now. New tracks went down really well at Glastonbury. Were you all quite chuffed with how well you went down with the crowd and great to see all your kids on stage with you again i feel like we've watched them grow up over the last few years. Anita
Hey Mr. Foreman As You Probably Have Figured Out By Now I'm an Obbsessed Fan, I Re Write Madness Songs As a Hobby As At 14 Im too Young To Get A Job And I Was Wondering If There Was Any Way I could Send You A Re Writen Version Of Idiot Child (Done By Me)Much Appreciated Shannan Xxxxxxxxx
Dear Shannan Well send it in and we can all have a look.Go on. CB
Wo ho ho he was, he was, he was the only bloody one
That answered questions
On my PC, each time I spend time logging on
And so on and on and on
I will mull over a few more sentences with time, I feel tired now!
Any way Chris, please release my e-mail to anybody who is meeting at Camden or anywhere else that would slightly moisten Old MadSuggsys quest? (How far is it as the crow fly’s, from Camden to Victoria Park?) Has anybody got any great ideas where to stop, where to go Speak soon Beers are on you when I get back stage Well done Chrissy, you are the man, the bed and breakfast man (tell me where?) Mick2122@aol.com
Hi Chrissy Boy, Just watched this awsome set and it was as usual superb,as a lad growing up in Aylesbury, now in Scotland and being a Nutty Boy it is fantastic to see you all doing yer stuff. Hope to see you soon up here!! Robe
Hello Chrissy Boy! I was raised on Madness by my father who kindly donated his 'Divine Madness' VHS (remember those?...) to me from the age of 2 and I've been a madhead ever since. I caught you guys on the BBC at Glastonbury and I have to say that you propper give it some welly. I got chills just reliving those old classics and hearing a couple of the new 'Folgate' songs was fantastic.
I have a cliche question for you my friend:
What song in the Madness set do you hold closest to your heart and enjoy performing the most?
I recorded your entire 1 hour Glastonbury set on my new hard drive dvd recorder so if you want a copy I'd be glad to share.
All the best to you and the rest of the nutty boys!
Was in Manchester last weekend to see Motown legends and could have sworn I was in the Liberty of Norton Folgate cos some chinese man tried flogging me some moody dvds in the pub. Unfortunately cant make Madstock due to prior commitments but will be at Nottingham 2 days later......looking forward to it. Richard
Dear Richard Ha ha so it is true then? Was it the same guy Suggs met I wonder? Did you buy any, they are always rubbish quality. [I have heard] CB
I always feel Chalky, Toks, Simon Birdsall & Hasler are part of Madness. Please say hi to them & god bless them. I saw Chalky & Toks appreared in Desmond Dekker 'Please Dont Bend' video clip, how did they ended up there? Bernie Jaw
alright Bernie I remember you.He was on Stiff at the time and they needed a couple of masculine hunks in the video. They couldn't get any so they got Chalky and Toks. I see Tok's brother a lot but not him or ChalkyJohnny Has very rarely. Si I see a bit, he did a load of work on my last house a few years ago - well a long time ago actually. CB
I ordered Golden Circle tickets from Trinity Street and have been told AEG would honour them, and they would be sent by 29th June, but so far they have not arrived and AEG won't respond, can you advice what is happening? As the day is getting very close now Cheers Stuart
Dear Stuart I think they will come. If they don't, take any emails and proof you have to the gig and I will make sure you get in. CB
Hello Chris, saw the BBC footage from Glastonbury, wish I could have been there. I thought Madness were superb as usual but also enjoyed seeing The Specials. Are the rumours that The Specials are the mystery "yet to be anounced" act on stage three at Madstock true? Mark Kelsall
Dear Mark Thanks. No they are not. Unless I have not been told.. CB
Hi I have received an email 2 months ago saying tickets would honoured from Trinity St But with the concert a week today I still have not received anyt ickets. Do you know how we can chase these as I cannot find a contact number for them and they do not answer emails.
Kind regards Deborah
Dear Deborah You should be OK. The gig is on the 17th which is still a while yet. Sorry for all this, but I think the tickets were always going out very close to the gig. I only got may Glastonbury ones about a week before. CB
great show at Glastonbury guys , it was amazing to watch it on tv. me and my mate will be there at Broadlands :) we were also at your gig at Bournemouth BIC 2006, amazing :) will you be there again any time soon , or maybe The Rose Bowl in Hampshire ? Ryan
how do fans become a member of m . I got the new album its defo one me your best but one step beyond is number 1 in my eyes . But ive still not got my box set yet . Keep on doing what you nutty boys do best . steve
Dear Steve you have to buy the box set, then you get a card inside with number on it, then you get into M.The box set is well worth it for the music alone. yours CB
Dear Chris, just thought I'd share with you my Madness memory.
November 19th 1981, I was 17 and splashed out to to see you lot at the Hammersmith Palais. I think the ticket was about 4.50, I remember being outraged that some touts were flogging them for about 7 quid (wish I'd kept that ticket!). I went with my best mate, Nigel, in true 2 tone spirit I was a white kid and he was black. As we emerged from the tube and rounded the corner to The Palais we were amazed to see you and (I think) Thommo walking to the gig just in front of us. Nobody seemed to have spotted you except us. Hardly surprising as you blended in perfectly in something like combats and donkey jacket.(I seem to remember several interviews where various members of the band describe the lack of luxury Stiff afforded you). A few weeks before, we'd seen Take It Or Leave at the ABC Hammersmith (we so wanted to be like you lot after seeing that film) and recognised Chalkie & Toks from the film selling the merchandise from a long table as we made our way into the Palais. We were both pretty short (still are)and were well pleased to manage to get right up close to the stage. After what seemed like hours of waiting, the lights went out and dry ice or smoke flowed onto the stage. The Opium Eaters (an instrumental from 7)bellowed from the speakers getting louder and louder building some suspence. The crowd starting pushing forward and then every one at the front pushed back. This went on and on. It was like the sea washing in and out. I felt like a weak swimmer out of my depth getting further away from the beach with every wave. By the time the music faded and you guys appeared we somehow found ourselves right at the back of the flipping hall! We were gutted. For people who never went to the Palais, it was a massive dance hall with a narrow balcony looking down on the floor (with hind sight, probably should have gone up there to begin with). The balcony was supported by several huge round pillars which had a square base about 3 feet high. The square bit had a lip about 2 inches wide. My mate and me spent the rest of the gig trying to see the stage by balancing on this thin lip. The pillar was too fat to get your arms round so we could only stay balanced on the lip for about a minute at a time before we fell off! I saw enough to remeber Suggs wearing a checked suit and Chas was in an army uniform. I found out last year that you had filmed the video for It Must Be Love that same day so that would explain Carl's clothes. I also remember Suggs dedicating One Step Beyond 'to the recent demise of The Specials' with an irony I didn't get then. I remember being there and not wanting that night to ever end. I suppose in my head it never did!
The years went by and the brilliant songs kept coming. I always said i'd see you again in concert but never did. I got married (and divorced)and you eventually split up. Madness, it seemed, was in my past.
Like thousands of others I was more pleased than I'd expected when you got back together and started touring again and 26 years after that first concert I saw you again at the O2 with my grown up daughter and my missus in 2007.What a night. Fast forward to June 2009 and I've just watched you live at Glastonbury (by luck I saw the complete set because we were watching BBC2 before the main event). I've been bombarding my missus with Madness for the ten years I've known her and she couldn't understand my passion but tonight I think she finally got it. I don't know if it was the hot weather, the wine or both but we both sat through the concert with some degree of emotion. Each song you played brought to mind a memory of when we first heard it. We sang along, we danced in our living room and we had a tear in our eyes when all the kids came on at the end.
I'm 46 this year and my daughter has recently given me the wonderful news that she is about to be a mum.Life moves on and those early 2 tone days seem like ancient history so I'm struggling to understand why it's still so special to me. It is a corny term much over used but it really was a way of life then. The music you liked dictated the clothes you wore, the people you mixed with and the places you went. I dunno, maybe you guys being around and playing those songs fools me into thinking my youth was not that long ago. But I do know that there are thousands of people my age with many special memories of Madness and the songs you did and are still doing and I know i speak for many in saying thanks to you Chrissy Boy for taking the time to do this site.
Long Live Madness
Dear Mick That's one of the best letters I have ever read. It was lovely, very moving to read for a cynical old git like me. I had a tear in MY eye by the end. It puts it all into perspective and makes answering all your messages worthwhile. I do love everyone else of course... Good luck with being a grandparent. Thanks mate, Chris
Hey CB, Is there a video in the pipeline for Sugar and Spice? Suggs said there was when he was on Something For the Weekend. Hope it's a good one! By the way, why were some of the lyrics changed for the single version? Patrick.
Dear Patrick The lyrics were wrong the first time. Mike made them better. Video being thought about right now. CB
I have seen you about 5 times now back from when i was about 13yrs. last time was norwich took my children and they were bowled over as well. thanks to you and the whole band for some great memories over the years. When is danger men 2 coming. cheers chaps kerry, a sad old fellow
Dear Kerry Thanks for the support. Dangermen 2 was cancelled, we did a new album instead. CB
I've bought my ticket for the concert in Saint-Cloud, France, on 28th august.... Do you think it could be possible to have one or two pass to go to the backstage after the gig, to have a drink with you all? Cheers
Mister B (French MIS)
Dear Mr B I don't know. It's not our show we are low on the bill, mon ami.I will try. CB
the wife is worried the kids dont finish school till 3.30 then weve got to get the trains and tubes and whatever mode of transport we need to get there, put her mind at rest and give us a rough estimate when you will be on stage, cheers dunc and nicky
Dear Dunc and Nicky Well, this of course depends on where you live. Manchester, I'd say forget it. North London you should be OK. We will be on about 9.30 I think. CB
just a random message to say hi to you all and that it is one of my objectives in life to see you guys before i die lol couldnt make it glasto but still made sure i saw you on tv...you were all brilliant! so would be great if you played some gigs up north soon! dingle
Chrissy Boy, I sent a message regarding the Gatcombe Park Gig, however, it got to you too late! John Tovey would like to thank you all for one of the best nights of his life, as this was the last one he will be attending, he really enjoyed himself and also managed to find somewhere to sit down!! Thank you all again! :) Tracey Tovey
I have never been able to listen to a Madness album from start to finish (got to be honest here) TLONF is the exception, this is your masterpiece Gentlemen, genius. Bloody well done THE British master class in pop music. Edd Shipton
what an album. had it for father's day and have been playing it every day since. best dad's day prezzie ever. good to see old pro's showing everyone how to make an album. if this album doesn't win awards then they aren't worth a damn. dave
I was at Gatcombe Park on Friday - my first time!! A bit sad considering I'm 38!! It was fantastic - thank you, thank you, thank you! Than I watched you on my telly from Glastonbury and that was fantastic too - although my boys (20 & 16) didn't think much of Mother dancing round the front room! Anyway I wanted to ask 2 things - 1. What music do you boys all like to liten to when you're not making your own brilliant stuff? 2. Why was Suggs on his own on Something for the Weekend a couple of weeks ago? (Or, more to the point, where was the gorgeous Mr. Smash?) Lady Liberty Norton-Folgate
Dear Lady Thanks. Chas was in Ibiza where he spends most of his time.Well wouldn't you? CB
I have been a fan since I was 10 but never got the opportunity to see you live until this year. Saw you in Birmingham back in December you were just brillant,it was worth the wait! I knew then what I had been missing and I knew I had to see you again and last Friday I got the opportunity at Gatcombe, you did not disappoint you were absolutely brillant yet again. You have made me one very happy Nutty Mare on this my 40th year!. The neighbours are getting to know your new album daily! It is the best one I have ever bought. Only wish I could have been at Glastonbury too you came across the airwaves brillantly although I may have tested the speakers on the TV a little too well!!! Well done guys. I hope a new generation of people have now discovered your music and will put a great album in their collection! Really admired your courage to do LONF live on friday. Jo
hi chris, im a member of the m section and just wanted to know how often does "dad" change the gigs he uploads on the page and do you think he will upload the 1999 gig at wembley, hope you dont mind me asking !!!
Dear Stuart Not at all. I don't know what's next to tell the truth, maybe a bit further back than that though CB
Hiya Chrissy boy, Have been a fan of you guys since 1980, love the new album and in my opinion is the best bloody material you guys have done in a lonnnnnnnnnnng time. Got the boxset about half hour ago and to say I am over the moon is an understatement. All I can say is that the 17th is coming up and I've ordered Gold circle tix ( I know they're comin' so ain't gonna ask ). One other thing is that you guys helped me thru' a very messy divorce and I thank you for the music you have provided over the years. My kids are avid fans and my daughter (9) loves Nightboat..... She still laughs at the video when she sees it. Take care and.............STAY NUTTY
Dear Studz thanks so much. all the very best, those tickets will come! CB
Hi cb, Fantastic set last weekend. Saw it on tele....great crowd...good vibes. Sartorial question...could you please tell me if Suggs' brown and white two tone shoes[similar to] are available in the uk[or online] Roger
Dear Roger Thanks. I just rang him and it was an answerphone.. CB
I have a mate, Maltese Chris B, who is one of the Le Gun guys and I believe was involved with the set design for your Hackney Empire gigs. His girlfriend said that he has to get me and the missus tickets for Madstock this year as last year for the Hackney shows he "thought we'd be too busy" without bothering to check with us... Can you give Carl a nudge for me to see if he's due anything?
Failing that are tickets still available? :-)
The new Madness album is fantastic! I'm inclined to believe the critics who say its the best thing you've ever done. The title track is a masterpiece and the album deserves every one of the tracks on the full length version. I also particularly liked Idiot Child & Lets Go & Africa is a beautiful tune to close the album with...
I've been a fan since I was old enough to buy my older brothers mates albums off them. One of them saved his lunch money up for weeks to buy Complete Madness on vinyl...Happy days...
I think a lot of this ranks with the classics. Emphatic return to form!
Good Luck & God Bless,
Thanks. Ah, right your mate of a mate of Chas and er what he didn't think that ...you've lost me there... CB
in the first madstock u released the single the harder they come, ? and i am sure u either said or answered a question saying u shouldnt have done it ? can i ask why because its ****ing great just like everything u good people do and i wish u would do a gig closer to west cumbria ,we have pubs here too? wil
Dear Wil I didn't say we shouldn't have done it. Some sycophant said our version was better than Jimmy Cliff's - yeah right, I don't quite think it is myself. gigs - maybe one day. CB
hi c b. just like 2 day hello. there is a sound. thats been around came up from underground 30 years have been and gone. a band around london town. some wear in camden town is that sound. in pubs or a club its your sound madness c yar all again some time mr.p ask woody please was it mrs ben at haverstock and a sound of a sax from across the way (road)cheers perry
It's great to see that the new album is doing so well, but I was surprised that you picked Dust Devil as the first single... I love "That Close" and "On The Town", and think either would actually perform a bit stronger. (There's got to be some kind of a world record for most top ten singles you haven't gotten quite yet, right?!) Mark Kraft
Top entertainment at Glastonbury and good to see you having the savvy to feature what should have been the next single (Forever Young) and not actually promoting Sugar and Spice in the set. Genius ....trind
Dear Trind Ah yes, we haven't perfected it yet. CB
Dear Chris the Cupboard, you would never guess where I have just spent the last 1.5 hrs? Where I hear you cry? Well, Chris I have just been listening to our local Brass Band! (Probably for the very first time, do a full session) enjoying the rhythmic metal tones which they proudly pumped out in the open air this evening due to the unnatural weather we are currently enjoying up here in Settle,. Reminded me of a few Madness Tracks! I was asked if I would like to front the Brass band at the summer Bizarre Ball, a one off Suggs 2 and the bad Brass Boys and Girls! To raise money for the local air ambulance, which plays a critical part here in North Yorkshire? My question to you is, are there any sheet music I can purchase including the Norton Folgate album, to enable the Brass Band to practice a few Madness numbers? I would be grateful if you could advise I notice that my dearest Daughter has placed a picture of me on the Gallery on my way back from Chamonix, while I am not so sure this does me any justice, however when I adorn my suit and sunglasses the resemblance is uncanny! As for the voice, say blow my own trumpet excuse the pun! Looking forward to the 17th to see you all yet again MadSuggsy
Dear MadSuggsy Eee ba gum, that all sounds reet grand. Sorry but there is no Norton sheet music as of yet. CB
I can not wait until the 17th of July, even on Holiday I'm checking my e-mails for updates. I forgot to check Heathrow's shops for the DVD Take it or Leave It, but I'll do that on return. I wish you, your family and everyone from the band and their family (and actualy everyone in world) lots of health, happiness and love. Until we all meet at Madstock, take care...
Dear Andre Yes, the other one didn't have much in it, did it? Sort of thing I do.TIOLI is currently unavailable but will get a re release soon. CB
Hello Chrissy, just wanted to say you guys were great at Glastonbury and can't wait for Madstock! The album's fantastic, is Forever Young definitely going to be released as a single, best track for years. Cheers, Sooty
Hi Chris, I'm coming dan saf to photograph a rollerderby event at earls court on 18th n 19th. Any chance of getting a pass to photograph at Madstock. You guys will obviously get full use of any pics from gig. Its the 17th I'll be heading to London. Reply to email if you like. I'm currently building up a collection of my youth, Bad manners, The Beat, The Damned etc, would be good to add you guys to the list Wullie
Dear Wullie Go to the contacts bit on this site and ask the management. Let me know whathappens should be OK. CB
Hi Chrissy Boy!! Just wanted to say that you fellas were awesome at Glasto, & I'm loving the new album. I saw you many years ago at Birmingham NEC (supported by Laxton's Superb), & of all the gigs I've been to there, nobody has got the place bouncing the way you did! After these great festival shows I'm really hoping you'll end the year with a UK tour. Pretty pretty please?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
