Hello. Chrissy Boy here, back where I belong.
Send me a question and I’ll answer it.
Within reason. Nothing about “when's the next gig” please. That’s
in the bit called “gigs” on the main page at the top. If you want
to just say hello to any of us, please feel free to post a comment.
Thanks CB x

Question
Sugg's lost single
Hi Chris I'ts been bugging me for years. I was flashing threw the TV channels one evning after work I think it was about 1990 there was a programme on the best of Channel X. This was a few years before Suggs's solo career. Suggs was in a video singing I belive the song was called Make me Scream. I've heard nothing of it since. It would had been at the same time he was managing The Farm.Pleace could you find out and tell me more about it.{Then again I might had just imagined it,it was 1990 after all.} P.S Good luck with Sugar and Spice All the best Steve Reed
Just had a look at the Sugar And Spice video and must say........ It is brilliant!! When you heard songs you picture a video for them and I must say I think it suits it very well, the costume and the silluetes of the couple, with alot of funny stuff as well! But I cant help but notice 7 has become 6 in alot of things you have done recently!!I hear Chas is over in Ibiza which isnt very convient wen ur in a band!Start college soon so if u want ne special effects make up then all u have to do is hollor!!! xxxx Jade
Chris, whats your take on how the year has gone for the band so far? Are the band content with your 30th year together, has there been enough love out there for you to carry on full time or is there a danger that you may all decide to take an extended rest? I hope not, goes without saying but I detect some frustration at the modern music business and the demands of fans who are tough to please!! Respectfully, Si
Good detecting Si. I think we have had a pretty good year myself. all the best CB
Hello mister Chris, I've got my ticket for the 28th of august for Rock en seine. It a great day for me cause i listen your music since 1980 when i was 13. I'd like to know if it's possible to meet the band after the gig. I bought the box of northon folgate and i ask to me if the membership card gives me more to meet you easier. I hope you understand me and sorry for my English. Nice to see you soon and more...You're great, you're Madness. Christian
Dear Christian Catch us if you can can merci au revoir CB
Hi Chris someone made a suggestion on here about downloading cd sleeves and it got me thinking about a possible idea for future releases, 1) Have a load of blank/recordable cds made, printed with a standard Madness theme,e.g the madness 'M',or band picture, and sell them via the Madshop, say, in packs of 10. 2) Release all future songs ,singles/'B' sides/albums as downloads only, which we can then burn onto aforementioned blank cd s' 3)For every new release, design a sleeve, along with track listing, composer info (& maybe lyrics), which could be easily downloaded from these pages & then printed off, ...and hey presto! for those of us who like to have a hard copy , instant Madness cds for us to place in our collections .
thanks ,from Andy
Dear Andy That's a good idea, in fact the box set was going to have a couple of blank CD's with the logo on but I preferred the ones with music on. CB
Hello there Chris hope you are well. Just a quick question. Are ther any plans to release a DVD of videos from the singles after Drip Fed Fred ? Mick allen
not a question just a replie to you said u had been married 3 times..aww ill marry you,not for money beause you are funny, fit and because you have been kind to me on facebook.hx Helen
Er what? Facebook? Fit? Have you got the right website? CB
Have been away for a little while, while tryin to sort my back out after madstock!! Turns out I have servre nerve damage in my back!! :( Very worried as to future gigs as I dont wanna really b stood or sat somewhere I cant c u guys and also my job involves stupid hours on my feet!! At the moment ur music is takin me thru another tough time in my life which I hope to get out of soon!!! Hope ur all well and had a good birthday!! xxxx Jade
Dear Jade I've been away myself, I hope you are getting better by now. CB
Got myself one of them there new fangled usb turntables at the weekend. I got my old vinyl stuff out the loft and started the long process of converting my records to mp3.
Anyway, hadn't played some of the albulm tracks for donkeys years (obviously The Business has B sides rather than album tracks). Hearing stuff like On The Beat Pete, You Said and Not Home Today is great on my I pod and made me realise how much TLONF has re-captured the sound, energy and spirit of One Step Beyond and Absolutely. I must be about 4 months too late to say it but love the new album almost as much as those first two classics.
ps, forgot how wicked your guitar solo is on Rockin' in A flat.
Hiya CB Sorry Last Time I Hit The Enter Button With Out Typing The Song I Know Its Late But Here It Goes.
Lost In Thoughts
Have You Ever Had Any Memories When At The Time You Didn't Understand,Like You Know Why But You Still Don't Get Why And You Were Know Its Sad But You Still Don't Cry
Im Sitting Here Lost In Thoughts Just Thinking About You,What Happened ,Where Did You Go And What Did You Do.I Was So Young It's All A Blur .You're My Mum So Why Can't I Remember Much About You
I Remember Normal Stuff Like Name , Age ,Favorite Song And How Much I Still Love You . No One Really Knows What Goes On Inside Me The Front I Show Is Only partly Real But No One Sees All The Hurt I Feel
Chorus One Repeated
Shannan
Dear Shannan Come on love, cheer up it's a bit sad. Good though, keep it up. Have a listen to Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. CB
Hi CB, WHo wrote the lyrics for Sugar and Spice? As it's about a relationship break up is it written with "artistic license" OR from painful experience? I though all the maddies were long term famil men...if the stage at the end of Madstock was anything to go by then the ska rythm method isn't working! John Stark
Dear John It was Mike.Sadly from experience. Those kids were not all ours you know. CB
Hi Chris, I picked up a copy of Sid James's single 'Our House' yesterday, recorded in 1973 (released to promote the 'Carry on London' musical). Were you and Carl aware of this track when you penned your 'Our House'? [Beyond the British icon status you'll be relieved it otherwise bears no similarity whatsoever to your hit!] ChrisCP
Dear Chris Well I should hope not..[checks on Google, finds song on youtube...no ,it doesn't.
I was just wondering whether the band had thought about celebrating the One Step Beyond Album with some shows, playing all the album tracks (plus a few more of course)? I am aware of at least two bands (OMD and Simple minds) that have recently celebrated one of their albums within a tour.
Hope you are all enjoying your 30th year
Kind Regards
Ian Wall
Dear Ian I'm sure we'll do something. We have done quite a lot this year, you know. CB
Hi Chris, I was downloading the new single from itunes which made me think back to buying your first album almost 30 years ago. I bought it on CASSETTE - remember those? A few vinyl albums and a lot of CDs later and all we get now are 0s and 1s. Fine by me though, I love the music however it arrives!
Some things never change though - I first saw you in 1981 at Liverpool Royal Court - got crushed at the front. Madstock 1992 - got crushed. Madstock 2009 golden circle - not crushed as too old for that kind of thing & stayed near the back! Seen you loads of other times but those were the highlights, together with Thetford Forest in 2005 as I live up the road.
So, finally we get a question - do you listen to many new bands and what have you downloaded lately? Cheers, Paul
Dear Paul I don't really download stuff, I buy CD's and even vinyl.I think I'll get the new Arctic Monkeys album soon. I got MIA's album and La Roux recently. CB I got
Dear Chris. Thank god for your new album, music was getting so boring. Talking of your new album, can you get sheet music for the piano for it? I have never heard a better band than madness. David
Thanks David There is no sheet music at present as we have not got a publisher yet - any minute though. CB
Hello Chris, That's a smashing video for Sugar & Spice, and i really like the change of lyrics too. Anyway, today's question, If future single releases become download only, will they at sometime in the future get a cd release as part of a greatest hits package?, or do you think that the cd album will follow the single into extinctinction and all music eventually becomes download only? Good luck with the single, and here's hoping you continue making music, cos a world without Madness is a much sadder place, Thanks from Andy
Dear Andy It will probably be bluetoothed into your brain in the very near future, via those daft looking head pieces everyone wears.
just wanted to say--i'm 40 and have never bought a madness lp--did buy a couple of 7 inches, back in the day.anyway-got your latest, and its bloody brilliat gary hewitt
Dear Gary Well, you've got a lot of catching up to do when all the old albums get re released haven't you? We did some great albums over the years. One Step Beyond is the first to get released - any minute now. thanks CB
Dear Andre Suggs has been in a few things.I just Googled Suggs+filmography isn't Google wonderful? I found a lot out he never tells me you know, he was in a film called the Edge of Love and I think he was in the Tall Guy er..sort of cameos I think and he was in a TV film. http://www.fandango.com/theedgeoflove_v379687/summary CB
I tried to buy the 'liberty' boxset but something's wrong with the link..and the place where I'm supposed to report probs is broken too! Help please :) Donna
Dear Donna Sorry they have popped out for lunch. I have reported this. CB
Dear Chrissy Boy we are going to make our way over to blackpool for the lights switch on but mainly to see you guys. If i bring one of your cd covers over will there be a chance i could get you guys to sign it? Will you be going to the Pleasure Beach or having a walk about?
Stevec2k9
Dear Steve There is always a chance if you see us please try to do it. CB
Hi, My name is Luke and i really like Madness i am listning to the liberty of norton folgate(NW5) that i got on my birthday(3days ago).I play piano and trumpet when did you start learnig sax? Luke McGavin age 10.
Dear Luke I never did. That's Thommo. I [allegedly] play guitar. He started when he was about 18 I think. CB
hi chris cant wait for the reissue getting relased.can you tell me any of the extra tracks that will be on it.how about releasing bed & breakfast man to promote the album.one of the best sing-alongs at your concerts. cheers andy
Dear Andy You just asked me something else! It's a surprise. Bed and Breakfast Man someone else suggested and I asked the team but it didn't seem to popular an idea. CB
hi chris when will this brillliant song be available to download got sugar & spice (radio edit) & demo version.love the demo version .please release more demo versions.madness you are truley a great band.30 years a fan.keep going you guys. andy coulter

Just wishing you a belated Happy Birthday and hope you had a great day.
Oh and a happy 30th birthday today for the release of The Prince.I'm 41 today too also.Doesn't time fly by.The good thing is I still feel like a teenager, without the movement though,if you know what I mean.
Cheers Stephen
Dear Stephen Thanks - I thought the Prince came out in September? CB
Better late than never Mr Foreman, but happy birthday, hope u enjoyed your day with your family and friends, and the rest of the band got u something nice. Tho I hear Monsieur Barso is sooooo tight with his wallet contents, so doubt whether he chipped in, ha ha.. take care
Tote and all the nutty gang..
Dear Tote I got a cake and the candles cost so much that was it. Thanks CB
Hi Chris..love your new video, its funny and a laugh.. (Shame its too late for promotion etc..) Where is Carl....rumours are abound on the forum re a rift etc. Can you tell us why he was not in it? Wishing you all the very best. Jim
Dear Jim We were initially not going to do a video, or at least not with all the band in. We were going to have more actor stuff with the band as well, no performance. It was very last minute.Chas had other commitments. thanks CB
hello Chris, Gilberto is from Como, Italy, will follow in 1979 and I will not be able 'to love you never stop. You are 30 years of my life, now I have 47. I love you.
Hi Chris, I was just wondering sometime round December 2003 you realsed a boxset with all the singles on in their original sleeves, I was jsut wondering if they will be re-relased at the end of the year as I love all the re-mixs from Our House to Uncle Sam. BLucky Callum Wylde
hi Chris,we are coming over to blackpool to see you for the lights switch on. Apparently you are only doing 3 songs will you be playing live or dare i say mimeing? We are hopeing to try and grab your autographs and maybe a photo what is the likley hood of us succeeding. Anyway see you in blackpool either way. All the best mick
Dear Mick as far as I know we are live.Have a go with the photo. CB
Hey CB. Just watched your interview with GMTV on YouTube, I was on holiday the time it was on so i didn't get to watch it on TV. It was very good (: When is Sugar and Spice out? P.S. I love the faces you pull. :D P.P.S I have a very nice picture of you at the Gatcombe gig, with a BIIIIIG smile on your face! Leah x
Hi Chris ,Yeah It's The Pain In The Ass Again,Shannan, I Just Thought You'd Like To Have An Opinion In My New Song (Not A Rip Off This Time) Coz Im A Big Fan Of You And Respect Each N Every Word You Say
HI, it was indeed a pleasure to see you at Roskilde festival this year, music critics are hard to understand, but let me tell you one thing, the show was, for me amazing, you guys really knows how to get my feet moving, I was wet all over after the gig. I've been a fan since the early Stiff days and do not recall that Madness have ever played in Denmark before, I may have been drunk or other so I have missed a gig, but I have never seen you live before, I had to wait 31 years!!!!! Well know I've seen you and as mentioned it was GREEEEAT, so I do not hope I have to wait another 31 years before we see you in little Denmark. give my regards to the others best regards Poul oh by the way, I was amazed on the coreography that the horn section had, is there a name of the coreografer? ;-)
Dear Poul We did the Roskilde festival before, in 1985 I think. The choreography of the horn section is created by them, usually when under the influence. The copyright for these fantastic moves is owned by Steve Turner, the most famous man in Ferring. thanks CB
Hello! I just want to send you a HUGE THANKS for your great gig in Moscow! I waited for you for many-many years, and the dream eventually came true! It was amazing!!! You are GREAT! Welcome to Russia again! Kira
Dear CB and anothers members of MADNESS! Many, many thanks for coming to Moscow!!! It was 1h30 of hapiness!!! We were waiting for you for so long! Finally it happened. I hope that this is not your last gig in Moscow and we will hear from you soon. I hope it wont take another ten years...and we will have a chance to see a full version of TLONF! Thanks!!! Very sincerly yours Zoya
Hi guys! Thanks a lot for Moscow! That was the best concert ever! Please come again soon :o) The only complain, that we haven't heard Swan Lake. Dennis
In 82 a group of friends from the school jazz band put on a show featuring your early work. In 98-99, I 'rediscovered' Madness, and enjoyed the day-to-day sightings via email chains from around the world. Now via YouTube, I am revisiting again. NW5 and Liberty of Norton Fulgate are well done. You guys are aging well, and so is your music. More good stuff, please!!! Moscow, whodathunkit in 1980? Quinn
Dear Quinn As it happens we went to Moscow in 1993 to do TOTP. My, how it's changed.. Thanks for all your support what happened to the school jazz band? CB
I've read your About section and it bought back a lot of memories but it only goes upto 1986, will it be extended to cover from when you got back together to present day ? I have been following you lot since 1979 and was pleased to note that my friend Ruth and I have actually seen you on all the tours you'd done during the 80's, you are still as good now as you were then, although with less hair ! Give Suggs a big kiss from me !!x sharon
DearSharon The time line is the golden years. Everything after that is a bonus.. thanks CB
Hey Chris, thanks my mate, for years of joy. I love Sugar and Spice and just seen the video in the members area, its a good 'un. Y'know I'm an old fashioned vinyl junkie so forgive me but I won't be buying the download. If you did a limited edition pressing on heavyweight 7" coloured vinyl with a sexy b side in a nice sleeve and charged a few quid I'd have had a barrow load. If indie bands can do it why can't Madness? If say 1,000 were pressed and offered at £5 each would you make a loss? Just wondering. Yours humbly Si
Dear Si It's the modern world...Do you know how much what you are proposing would cost? CB
Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think! Repost as "my life according to (band name)"
Are you a male or female? --------- Bed and Breakfast Man
Describe yourself --------- On the beat Pete
How do you feel? --------- Overdone / Mad not Mad
Describe where you currently live --------- Land of hope and glory
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? --------- New Dehli / House of Fun
Your favorite form of transportation --------- Driving in my car
Your best friend(s) is/are --------- Michael Caine
You and your best friends are --------- Yesterday's Men
What's the weather like? --------- Grey day / The sun and the rain
Favorite time of day --------- Sunday morning / When dawn arrives
If your life was a TV show, what would it be called? --------- Tomorrows dream
What is life to you? --------- One Step Beyond / Prospects / Waltz into mischief
Your relationship --------- Solid gone / Calling cards
Your fear --------- Cardiac arrest / Razor blade alley / In the middle of the night
What is the best advice you have to give? --------- Take it or leave it / Keep moving / Shut up
Thought for the Day --------- Time for tea
How I would like to die? --------- Disappear / Turning Blue / Rocking in a flat
My soul's present condition --------- Not home today / Embarrassment
My motto --------- Chipmunks are go! / Madness (it's all in the mind) Rob
Just want to thank you guys for the new album. Rather than retiring with your riches (well deserved) you've put-in the hard work and produced a beautiful album. Well done. The world is a better place with Madness in it. Cheers Lads Mike Bell
Thanks Mike How do you know we are rich? I've been married 3 times!I suppose I am not too badly off though... CB
Dear Chris, Thank you for the great gig at Afisha Picnic! I missed Grey Day, Shut Up and some songs from the new album, so I hope you liked Moscow and will get back here at your next tour (may be with a longer set-list?) ;) P.S. Just noticed 320 kbps version of On the Town with Amber vocal in the M section, thanks for that too. And have a nice trip to Oslo! Best regards, Marina
Dear Marina Thank you too, it was great. We were delayed with some technical problems by 10 minutes and we had to finish by 10pm. CB
Just wanted to say the new album is absolutely fab - can't stop playing it - can't wait for you to come to Manchester again soon!!!! Please say hi to El Thomo, who is just the best and the reason I bought a tenor sax when I was 14 years old!!! Karen
With the current outrage and dissapointment of no physical release of your brilliant new single sugar & spice , wouldnt it be a good idea to use this great site to download the sleeves & inserts for any future single dowmloads.
Yours sincerly Dave
P.s Their is a real buzz on the Isle of Wight with your pending gig...keep up the good work with the good ship Madness
Why is there no physical release of sugar and spice? Not going to make enough money or just couldn't be bothered? Such a let down from one of the bands you'd think would care.
Everything nice? I don't think so. Kildare
Dear Kildare Yes indeed. We are running out of money..Of course we care. CB
is there anywhere i can get music scores for any of your hits, i am learning to play tenor sax and would like to play some of your sax riffs eg one step beyond. thanks ian
Dear Ian Not the sax, sorry. You would have to get a songbook and transpose it. CB
hi chris it was 17 years ago today i went to my 1st madness concert. how time flies when you're havin fun! seems like only yesterday have fun in moscow! dandy dan
HAPPY BIRTHDAY COMMANDER!!!!! Hope you have a great day, with a big cake, and all those different kinds of potatos...Have a drink on me, Good Sir. I actually sent you a birthday present - its a pair of Golden Circle Wristbands...Feel free to repeatedly email me if they haven't turned up... All the best my man Owen The Nutter
Have a good one but go easy on that old vodka. I hear they make it a bit strong. You need to remember how to play! Could you substitute the Corona bottle for a vodska one?
Chris where did the band get them really stylish sunglasses that some of the band wore back in the day? You know the ones that Suggs had on in the IMBL(black) video and suggs and lee had on in waiting for the ghost train video(tortoise colour).I have been after a pair for years.I suppose after all this time they are no longer made, however if you know where i could get hold of a pair it would make me a very happy man. alex
Dear Alex The ones from It Must Be Love in Japan were bought in a street market. The closest you can get are made by Persol. www.persol model 2287S. VERY Expensive.. CB
I would like to know when it will be possible to see you on stage in France. I'm a big fan of your band and I would like to see you one day in my life. I'm very sorry but I will not be in France when you will be in "Rock en Seine" in Saint-Cloud. So, promise me to come back.
Hello Young Chris . Don't no if you'll get this on time but have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the 8th August , the same as my daughter Alyssa but she will only be 4 and your only 21 ! I'm sure you'll have a vodka or 2 !! All the best . The Flash .
Dear Barry Thanks - but you know what ? I didn't have any Vodka. CB
Hi Chris I have just made an order for merchandise from the shop for my husbands birthday as he is a massive fan and for a total order of £77 there is a P&P of £27.10 which is outrageous. I tried deleting everything else and just ordering a tshirt for £11 but the P&P for that would be £7.10, needless to say I have deleted the order. I have emailed the customer service dept who told me that basically its the royal mails fault as they set the charges but I know for a fact if I go to the post office to post a tshirt even taking into consideration the packaging it would not cost anything near that. I am afraid I have been on amazon and ordered him the new stone roses album instead. Whoever is running your online shop needs sacking as they are losing you business. I look forward to your reply, Michelle
Dear Michelle This sounds rubbish to me, I will get it looked into. You don't live overseas do you? That does push the price up, but £7 for an £11 shirt is ridiculous. my apologies CB
Ps I just got this reply:
I just looked on the Madshop, it's £3.26 for standard mail or £5.95 for Couriered mail. I don't know where they have got those figures from, will look into it,
recently on paul ogrady show the band revealed that a back catalogue collection would be released later in yr . do you have arough idea when?
Yes. One Step Beyond will be out in October 30 years on and it's really looking good, lots of extra stuff. Then the others will follow at a quicker rate. CB
hi chris sugar and spice is only available on english i-tunes and not irish one.dust devil video only on english one too.i bought off madshop but it only has 2 tracks africa is missing.all 3 on english i-tunes,also when you purchase from madshop you cant get artwork in itunes libary.hope it dont have you confused.can madness make this available to irish fans ie irish i-tunes thanks chris michael farmer
Dear Michael Did this get sorted out? I am currently 3 days and 21 hours behind you. I will forward this on. CB
for ignoring my message, big time charlie, emoticon rolling his eyes charlie
Dear 'Charlie' I looked under your name and there is no message, unless it was 'where's the next gig in?'.....they get deleted, plus you have a bogus email address. CB
Hi again Chris. Mr Barson usually gets the plaudits as the main songwriter in the band, but you have had your moments. What would you say is the best song you've written for the band?
My own opinion of original songs on the albums for what it's worth is:
OSB - Best song Night Boat to Cairo (Best CB song - Land of Hope and Glory) Absolutely - Baggy Trousers 7 - Shut Up Rise and Fall - Rise and Fall Keep Moving - Prospects (CB - Keep Moving) Mad Not Mad - Yesterday's Men Wonderful - Lovestruck (no CB song! Why?) TLONF - TLONF (CB - That Close)
What with other great songs like Shadow On The House and Please Don't Go on the B-sides, I would say you could be rather proud of your output!
Graham
Dear Graham Oh stop it, please. None of them would be anything without the input of the other 6 people in the band.
Just a quick note to say I think the new album is awesome (especially the box set with extra tracks) - definately some of the best stuff the band have written.
There are so many songs on the album that are possible singles 'That Close' gets my vote). That kinda breaks the trend of your past albums where the album tracks are great but the 3 or 4 singles really stand out.
Surely it must be tempting to make another album after the sheer quality of this one?
Hope your doing the o2 again this year!
Ash
Dear Ash I would like to do another album, if we can all get together for a few weeks we could do it. thanks CB
Hey Chris, it's taken me a while to write, but I just wanted to say how absolutely amazing the album is. Not a bad song on it (not that there are any bad Madness songs), it's the band's Sergeant Pepper. In fact if the Beatles had released the song TLONF instead of A Day In The Life, we'd still be talking about the song 40 years later. Is there another song out there that goes through so many musical styles and is as long as it is without ever being boring? If so, I'd like to hear it.
Dear Graham No way! It's our Beatles "White Album". Our Sergeant Pepper album was "Rise and Fall". We have done a song with that many styles before on One Step Beyond.....Mummy's Boy. thanks CB
Hello people, It might seem a bit of a try-to-be-smart/deep question, but I'm curious so I'll ask anyway. Many of your lyrics are about, well.. madness, free spiritness and living your life, I think. Are the band free spirits, and if so, how? I loved the pink suit at PinkPop 2009 :3. Hugs from Holland. :) Yana
Dear Yana I wasn't wearing a pink suit was I? The lyrics I would hazard a guess to say are written by free spirited people that's for sure. As far as I know. CB
Hi Chris, You mentioned the "next single" you will look into whether it cld be released physically - I know this is early days given Sugar and Spice is just out but it would be unusual for you to release 4 singles off an album. If you do, any idea what it might be???? Those people canvassing That Close keep going on about it, but I spose Forever Young might be yr preference? Timothy Ellis
Dear Timothy The next single will have some sort of physical release. I really don't know at this point what it will be. Forever Young is my preference. CB
Nice to hear an old school extended mix of Africa - thanks to everyone involved for getting it out and for popping it on Spotify so I could hear that it was as I suspected!
However, I reckon I could have done better (and for free) so is there anyway I can speak to your people to do something for you guys?
It was a nice mix though - well balanced and nice emphasis on the percussion in places.
Hi Chris, Finally got my copy of TIOLI on DVD and saw it yesterday. Brought back memories of going out and searching the music stores for every Madness or ska single/album my mate and me could find. Those were the days. Again I like the way the movie portrays a band in it's earlier days and how they form themselves. Having gone through the same motion when I was 18. Never made it big, but had a lot of fun trying it out. I think it should be a must see for every new band out there.
Not to sound picky, but do you think there will be another version of TIOLI with some more extra's on it. This version 'only' has commentary on it. Take care, Andre
Dear Andre I have come across the soundtrack [I think] the masters of the songs we recorded for the film which would be a good extra. Cb
Hey you guys, I wanted you to know that I have introduced another generation to your music. My 8 Y.o. loves it and my 11 y.o. likes it. They both think the vinyl I play for them is cool.Keep it up- 26 years a fan and counting. Mike
thanks for all the support Mike, this is good to hear, another generation of Madness fans, we can keep going for another few years yet. CB
sugar & spice (demo download) Question: i bought the multi download of sugar & spice got the radio edit no problem still waiting for the demo version download elizabeth scott
Dear CB I've bought tickets for Carisbrooke Castle as a surprise for my son James's 10th birthday next week. I've been a massive fan since the early days and have seen you all live 20 times now and the Isle of Wight will be James's 2nd time. He loves you too. Can't wait to see you all again in a couple of weeks. Will try to get to the front but don't want to get James squashed so might have to watch from afar. but will be there supporting you anyway. Please reply and say Happy Birthday to James xxxxx Anna
Dear Anna Please don't let him get squashed. I spend a lot of my time at some of these gigs just looking at some poor kid getting squashed at the front. Then I have to try and get them out CB
What you up to for your birthday? I hope you have a lovely day!
Oh, and don't forget to warn the fire brigade in advance about all those candles on your cake...they might need to call in extra units from across the UK! ;o)
LouB40
Thanks Lou I was in Russia having high level talks with the band. Great days. CB
Happy birthday for saturday. I know this is early but its worth saying it early to you as you are the most fan orientated member of the band.
I know you have given us an early birthday pressie by showing us clips of the making of sugar and spice to the m section. How about going one better and add some more audio and plenty more on dads desk too. I know its your birthday but we can at least celebrate it by spending the day watching and listening to loads of new stuff.
Cheers to you have a great birthday and hope there are many more to come.
Dear Tony Thanks for that thought. Yes, the M section needs a bit of stuff on there, I always forget about it. I have got a few ideas that I need to get done. CB
what is going on?? Question: S and S is not a good song. Im so sad this is going to be a single. So much better on Liberty and the box set. Not sure where Madness are going with this z song. To me its bad :(((((((((((((((( just like Rainbow. Its that bad, i will not be buying. Sorry to say this. But all the best. If its a top 30 hit. Beers, curry and the lap top dancers are on me old boy. Who picks the songs to be singles? drew
Dear Drew One of our managers said it got the most mentions in the reviews of the album which is a sort of skewed logic approach that I like. Having said that it should have been be Forever Young, in my mind... CB
Dear CB surely u boyz deserve the lifetime achievement awards at the Brits next year. People are now finally realising how good and what an inspiration u guys have been, there is no current band that deserves this award more than Madness. The only thing tho, you boyz are propably still too young to get this, maybe in another 30 years, he he. Take care
Tote
Dear Tote Yes and we would get a free dinner too. thanks for the vote CB
Hiya Chris, a while ago i asked you if you knew where i could get a black and white large picture of you and the rest of the boys and you told me to get a picture and put it in a frame. You cheeky Chrissy boy you.Well i found a company called the media storehouse,so now i am the proud owner of a 16 inch black and white canvas picture of you lovely boys.Just thought i'd let you know case someone else asks.Hope to see you in December. Big Kiss Jane.
Dear Jane I am so glad you took my advice. thanks CB
hi chris respect for putting on a fantastic day! it was good to see Jerry Dammers Spatial AKA Ensamble,Rico Rodriguez, Rhoda Dakar and your good selves of course. hats of to you and the rest of the guys for aknowledging Jerry Dammers contribution to Madness. Respect ice rink
Hi Chris, I love this song (I seem to be in somewhat of a minority there), but what's it about? Geoff Murrell
Dear Geoff Suggs wrote the lyrics and he told me it's about a bank robber who has returned to his mews flat and is just about to drive off in his MKII Jag for a while till the heat dies down. Like Micheal Caine in the Italian job sort of thing.I agree, it's a great song, very atmospheric. CB
I ordered the S&S two track bundle via the official shop on this site but up to now I have only been able to download the radio edit version of the song. Any idea why Mike's demo is not available yet through recordstore and why the Ashley Beedle remix of Africa appears on some sites but is not available to purchase through the official shop?
All the best. Ivan
Dear Ivan I've been away and I am only just catching up on all my cupboard messages. I don't know what happened - did you get it? I will hopefully find a message later on saying you did. CB
Great song and video, where was it shot? please. Ian T
Dear Ian the Clarendon Ballrooms which was where we played Dave Robinson's legendary wedding reception. It was in Hammersmith, but was knocked down some years ago. When we were doing the video I suggested it as a location. CB
Just to say how much I love your stuff & the new album is just perfect. You were the 1st band I ever saw live (Hanley Victoria Hall,12 Days of Xmas..)& no band I've seen since has matched up to it.Incredible. Thankyou for the amazing music & much love to you all,Rich ;)
Since you, Mr CB, created the man, I'd like to ask: who's this character based on/about? Someone in the band? Someone got a dirty secret eh? EH?? I bet you it's Bedders. ;) NMG
Dear Nice Man George I wrote the music, not the lyrics, which were by Suggs and based on a story he read in a newspaper. Bedders wears boxers. CB
I appreciate that these days singles are generally loss makers so the download bit makes sense. Still it's a shame that the new single didn't even get a 45 release. Have you guys thought about doing a competition to win one of a handful of Africa white label 12"s or acetates? I appreciate you don't owe us anything and the whole single thing does cost you guys money. I guess I'm just a bit sentimental about being able to physically play something.
BTW
You've said a few times that your guitar is very heavy. What kind of weight are we talking about that you have to lug about on stage?
Take care Mike
Dear Mike Yes I am sorry too. If we do another single there will be some sort of physical format.I haven't actaully got round to weighing the guitar yet, but it's about the weight of er..a heavy guitar. Go in a guitar shop and ask to try one out. A Gibson Les Paul erm white one it's called. No a Les Paul Custom.I just looked it up on Google [which is quite a good search engine] and apparently they weigh about 10lbs. CB
First of all, love, love, love the Liberty of Norton Folgate, especially the title tune and the Clerkenwell Polka. You are amazing! Two questions. First, when oh when are you coming back to the States? Second, I love Lee's T-shirt in the Sorry video (also a favorite song!). Do you know where I can grab one? Minus the tutu, of course. Sorry I missed Madstock this year, hope to get there next time! Rica
Dear Rica er what was it?... [goes on youtube to watch Sorry video] OK, I think they have them at our merch store. thanks CB
i cant believe it ?? im from cumbria and i have complained about you not calling in to see us and you end up turning the glorious lights on at blackpool (was it suggs idea or yours )cos u both like the seaside ?i have booked my holiday with my family that week and there were 3 choices cleethorpes / scarborough or my choice blackpool and guess were we are going to ........? scarborough im so gutted i cant explain my 8 yr old daughter loves u and my 19 mnth yr old daughter cant stop bopping to the intro beat of mission from hell and more oh well enjoy the lights for me ? oh one more thing i dnt like the idea of digital only what about us with vinyl or cd collections wil
Dear Wil Well you can't please everyone can you? You should have gone to Blackpool the Golden Mile. Digital is low carbon impact or something.. CB
hi chris! im 14 and many people think its weird me liking this kind of music at my age but ur simply quality! but i want to start up a mod/ska band from scratch but dont know where to start i can play guitar now what should i do many thanks conor
Dear Conor Get some like minded pals...at least a bass and drums piano and sax would be nice. Find somewhere to practise. Learn some old ska and reggae songs that you like plus maybe some other stuff. Then write you own songs in a similar style. Good luck, it worked for us..CB
love new album back to your best got old school feel just like first album some feel slighty specialsish more of the same please how about touring brighton please 2 tone tour again would be the best thanks for the album kevin

Dear Andy It was released on the 3rd of August. The single is [sadly] only a download. Our small budget demands it. I suppose you get the artwork, I don't know how that works. The Madstock DVD will be out some time soon. thanks CB
Hi there, apparently the video for 'our house' was filmed on the street where I live (stephenson street nw10)and the video backs this up. We are having a children's street party and also taking the opportunity to let residents know a little of the history of the area (lots of filming has taken place here) would be great to get hold of a press cutting of this momentous occasion, but nothing on the internet. Can you help....Please?? bernie
Dear Bernie Thanks for telling me this, as people always ask me where it was filmed. I can't really find anything else out about it myself. All I can tell yi is that is was some old mans house and he was sitting in his kitchen while we filmed, so I felt sorry for him. Then I found out he was always hiring his house out for films and so on. So there may have been a lot more stuff filmed in your street in the 80's CB
I just spent this afternoon playing Ukulele and i have found that it lends itself well to uke. I got C n F and B and G7 for the verse but there is another chord in the chorus and i cannae figure what it is and its doing me head in, and i am pissed now so i am giving up tonight ! Please help..

i am not going to go on about what a huge Madness fanatic i am, nor how much i love you all, but please will you just confirm a couple of things for me. we have bought tickets for carisbrooke castle cos it's my son's 10th birthday and he is in awe of you all ( I am just in lust / sorry i mean love!!) but i have heard that there may be a problem with the licence and that the gig may not go ahead. any ideas whether this is true or not? also, i have heard that Prince Buster is supporting - please tell me this is true>>>>???????? anna
Dear Anna Where did you hear all this? There are no problems with the licence. Prince Buster is not supporting. CB
Will ALL of the boys be there on Friday 2nd September in Blackpool including Chas Smash Hope so as am back at Uni in October for final year of Surveying Degree and any chance to see Chas Smash would be heaven Many Thanks Caroline
Hi Chris... better late than never :) Just wanted to thank you and the rest of the lads for a fantastic experience on the 17th of July :) I knew, travelling over from Malta to see you 'in the flesh' for the first time ever (and, as you know full well, I've been a fan since Day #1!), that it was gonna be an awesome event... I was not disappointed! :) Cheers, mate :D Paul Muscat
Thanks Paul I'm sorry we didn't meet up after all these years..... Chris
Hi!OMG Finally get to see you all live Newport, Isle of Wight, town of my birth and I can't wait! Funniest thing last night was dancing to a Madness compilation of your songs..... in a fancy Chinese Restaurant! Karaoke in the Limo on the way home was great to. God help anyone who would try to take the microphone from me! See you in August! Kerry
Dear Kerry You are just so crazy ain't ya? Please don't get onstage with us - I'm scared. CB
hi Chris on your world tour of camden there is a sign above the tour bus saying Inverness!!! I could not make out what the rest of is said, could it be saying that you would all love to come up to Inverness to play and would that be a first?? I am a loyal fan as my first wife through out my Madness colection so i divorced the mad cow, surly that deserves a reply. ps. do you wish me to give you directions of how to get to the highlands. michael
i dont understend why you dont answer me about a gig in israel ?madness have a lot of fan hare .un this month was in israel madona pet shop boys d.mode leonard cohen i hope you will come when the pease will come shalom ronen
Dear Ronen If the the peace ever comes, I will come. I don't answer gig questions, that's why I didn't answer before.Look above my page. CB
I read in the Blackpool Gazette that you are performing at the Blackpool Illuminations switch on. can you confirm and if so, you should pop over to the Tower Ballroom to check it out as I reckon it would be the perfect venue for you to play a full concert??? Richard Edwards
i was at the broadlands romsey gig, how was it for you man i thought it was great but people are saying the band were pissed off? ali
Dear Ali Well, there's only so many time you can watch bottles [although plastic] being chucked around and people being dragged out of the crowd totally comatose and lagging. It is a great British phenomenon. Everywhere else in the world, they can hold their beer. Otherwise it was a great gig once, it got going, that is to say the decks were cleared. CB
1) Is it true that the (4 string) bass guitar is two easier than the electronic guitar?
2) Uber nerdy (I think this may reach my considerable nerdy peak.) I noticed that the stamper numbers on the Keep Moving vinyl are quite high - stick with me now - so does this mean that some cuttings were rejected or a change of sequence for the album before being released into the wild? ('cos the picture disc is different, isn't it?) Mike Fisher
Dear Mike I would say that just because the bass has 4 strings, it does not make it easier to play than a six string guitar. For example look how many keys a piano has. Wow! - how hard is that to play?
Keep Moving stamper numbers is not really something I would have had any great part in deciding, or noticing even. I don't recall any test pressings being rejected.maybe it's like spinal Tap this one goes up to 11. They started off with a high stamper number. CB
Hi chris some thieving git has had it away with my seven album and i have not been able to replace it. will all the madness albums be re-released in the near future? keep up the good work Al
Afternoon Chrissiy boy and greetings from Liverpool. Embarassement was the first single i bought all those years ago and have now converted my 5 year old son James to the wonders of Divine madness. He is loving Baggy trousers and It must be love. I am loving Norton Folgate - a total triumph. See you on tour , son in tow. Dunc
Dear Dunc This I what I like to hear. New generations of Madness fans.. thanks CB
Christopher, Don't blame you re the download only single - it's the future! Why spend money producing a CD single when a download is cheaper. As Madness are a bigger album and gig band than a singles band now (and how grown uo is that!?), it's the wise choice. I'm just pleased there's artwork and a video. Bonus! Will the vid be on the M section soon??? Ian
Dear Ian thanks for being so understanding. The video should be in there soon. CB
Hi Chris, Do you know when the next album will be out? thanks Patrick
Dear Patrick That was one of my great ideas, to do a new album but everyone just laughs at me. Enjoy the latest one, or buy the box set, there's another 8 tracks on there just as good. CB
Hi CB, sorry about my last mail with gigs n all, I was at Glasto with my two daughters, first time for them, they didnt know who MADDNESS where, they sure do now, it was a massive culture shock for them, they have now added the BOYS to their collections,we are all saying thanks for a smashin time we had at Glasto, my two now no all the songs n are drivin me mad for to see them again.
Thanks Frank
Dear Frank That's alright I just delete them. Thanks for getting us two new young fans. Life goes on and they will grow up, maybe have kids and the kids will be Madness fans. Great eh? CB
hi chrissy boy what's your favourite madness b side?. cheerio mat ps play some smaller venues, my eyes arn't what they used to be, plus i can't see what chords you and bedders are playing from the back of some awful arena!!
Dear Matt The Business. Smaller venues? How dare you! We have video screens don't we? CB
Hi CB Just would like to mention how proud we all are to hear and see you boyz in the foreground again and receiving great and well deserved reviews. It must be tiring doing the full round of interviews and appearances, but surely it's all worth it in the end. Love the new album and fanastic Madstock a couple of weeks ago, this woz the third time we've seen u guys live and the best show so far. My two young teenage kids also came along and they loved it, they've grown up to your music like thousands (or millions) of others. Just quickly, I see you are playing on the I.O.W in August, is that a full show?? Can't seem to get tickets anywhere. Thanks Tote
Dear Tote Thanks for all the support. The I.O.W. gig just click on this site under gigs and you should be able to get some. Select the Isle of Wight show, which takes you to a ticket agency, then you have to search for Madness and it takes you to the buy gig tickets, which will is a full show by the way. Don't get the VIP tickets.. CB
Hi :) im 15 and a proper ska girl get it from my dad and his best mate. We loved the gig best thing i have ever been to, my dad is very proud of me because i started the skanking off where we stood towards the back when the djs came on. However we didn't like the golden circle part, 2 tones not about segregation! But anyway we loved it and all had a amazing time. Night Boat to Cairo was by far the best song played and a good end to the show :) Btw my mum loves Suggs suit. Shannen
Chrissy Boy Please can you comment why one of your letters has been removed? there were some amusing comments! The people I did meet in London took the resemblance of me and Suggs as nothing more than a bit of fun, obviously one fan took offense. Some for some against, I would be interested to know why the letter and comments got removed, even if you e-mail me back privately. Are there any Christmas dates planned?, Madness has become part of Christmas past and hopefully present Yours sincerely P.S Does Suggs need a stunt double for the fish finger adds!
Speak soon Regards MadSuggsy
Dear Madsuggsy What one was that? They get archived maybe it's at the bottom, below this.I might have done it accidently. I am an old man you know, the internet is very new to me. CB CB
Hello again Chris! I have two things to ask this time! Sorry to bother your time. Firstly, Will the band play mroe One Step Beyond tracks to promote the re-release of the album?
Secondly, has any of the members of Madness attempted to rap before? Thx again Chrissy Boy! Trilby
Dear Trilby I would rather play more Norton Folgate songs to promote that, myself. Suggs and Chas did a song called Mutants in Mega City One which was sort of rapping.
I know when people say "I don't usually write on these types of things", they really write all the time, but in my case it's the honest to God's truth! :) I've been a disc jockey for well over 17 years now, and I never got around to telling you boys "thanks" for inspiring me to get behind the mic! "Our House" was the first music video that I thought really could be "timeless" turns out I was right. Still get requests for it all the time. Your music, however, has only gotten better since that time, so I just wanted to tell you keep it up, and thanks a bunch! CKP
Chris, I cant seem to get hold of a navy baracuta madness jacket in size 46, can you be of any help where I can get one. Fantastic album and gigs by the way. PETE
Dear Pete I have asked our merchandiser about this, they only go up to 42 on the site. thanks CB
dear chrissy boy, read that the new song will only be available on download is that definately the case? i would love it to be available in other formats especially cd single can you shed some light please krissy boy. thanks clifford
Dear Clifford we are keeping our caron footprint down. do you know how many rainforests get cut down to make one CD? CB PS-OK it' a budget thing we can't afford it this time. Can you still buy a few 'copies'?
Just wanted to say what a great Madstock. Me and my cousin made it to the first one Finsbury Park London 8th August 1992 at the tender age of 15, and coming back all these years later brought back all those great memories.
I think the band sounds even better now, you guys improve like a fine wine really! We were down the front and met some great people, there was a guy with crutches infront of me and everyone there made sure he was OK during the big dance numbers. Another bloke had his little daughter on his shoulders the whole gig, she knew all the words too.
A quality band with quality fans, we won't leave it so long next time
thanks for getting us through the recession(s)
Matt
thanks Matt, you got us through the recessions too.. CB
Good stuff on GMTV this morning. Tho when the guy mentioned Madstock as being huge I noticed you said "huge?" and shook your head as if in disagreement! I spose it\'s not on the same scale as Glsto but we loved it =D
l contacted your office through Paul Rider and they very kindly said l could play your music from the wonderful new album when l appear on the plinth at 6pm on 15th August - so thank you for that. l guess you will all still be in Oslo at that time but you can watch online on www.oneandother.co.uk either live or after. lf you are back and can join me, l will buy a beer afterwards. Otherwise, l just want to add that the album is so much fun and full of great, great things. l love you all. Tim x
Dear Tim This is great - I really appreciate it. thanks CB
Ahoy Commander Just thought you might want to have a listen to The Podcast the MIS-Online did from Madstock, presented by yours truly. Basically, its a collection of about 45 fans, attendees and special guests talking about the day, as well as quite a lot of silliness that was done for no particular reason. Heres the blurb written by Jon Young:
Following his excellent help co-hosting the 02 XMISCast last year for MIS, Owen "The Nutter" Collins takes over the full controls of the MISCast Machine to bring you his mad funfair-ride through Madstock, with plenty of fans along for the ride with him too. He finds time to be silly with Clive Langer, joke with Bedders, and has an aside with a friend of Jerry Dammers. His crowning glory though come at the end of the day with a poignant seven minute interview where Lee Thompson considers retirement or taking time out of the band, reflects on the great songwriters in Madness and tell's us all what's his favourite cheese.
hey Chris, just want to say another fab Madstock..Took my misses along to her first ever Madness gig and she loved it!!! think its my 38th time ive seen you guys over the years..superb line up,but must say i absolutly loved The Aggrolites and The Anomolies, both blew me away..but your set was one of the best ve seen you do...Hope fully see you all very soon...keep on stomping... Wayne
Don't know if you can answer this for me, but thought if you couldn't no-one could!
I noticed there was an "official"? photographer doing the rounds at Broadlands. I also saw him on the stage while the Dualers were on. Do you know where these photographs are going to be published? I took some photos, but was quite a long way back so would be interested to see his as they are bound to be a lot better than mine!
Thanks a lot Mandy
Dear mandy In a word. No. Whenever we do a gig there are hundreds of photographers there. They are not working for us, I think they sell the photos to news agencies and the like. CB
Just wanted to say Madstock was THE best ever day. I was in the golden circle near the front and didnt have anything nicked, didnt her anything about pickpockets!!! maybe thats cause I spent FAR to much time in the beer tent that afternoon. Jumping around like a looney with all those skinheads was marvellous.... and I should know better at the ripe old age of 41!!! Please please please come back to London soon Karen xxxxx
well what can i say.ive been a fan for 29 years and 395 days(if that makes sense).listened to other questions, read other answers.been member of this forum of that forum.got all that has been published and got a few extra,s too if know what i mean.but all i wanted to know was did it feel the same going into this the 5th madstock or dd it feel like another gig.i mean as it goes you have been gigging quite a bit this year compared to previous and its been quite hectic going from city to city.and given the fact that you played a gig the day after madstock did it feel as special as those previous madstocks.i think that for the past 2 years you as a collective have been very polished as a band compared to previous(and i dont mean that in a nasty way saying that you werent polished in years before.to me as a fan its a little too perfect and i think that yes whilst you have come on leaps and bownds i still like the raw madness that was.erm im not making sense now.oh how i would like to be face to face to portray my question better.please dont think that im putting you down in any way shape or form.i absolutely love your music and will to the day i die.and no im not asking is it just the money.i do know you lot better than than that.but given all that has gone on during the time was it as special as when you reheared for the first madstock-im waffling now.maybe a few to many sherbutts.anyway.im listened to madstock again through the powers of technology and wehey.thanks for all the happiness and craftnmenship of a recording unit that you have given to the nation and long may it continue. good night and god bless
chigs
Dear Chigs First of all I would like to thank Lawrence "Wez" Werrett for helping with my router yesterday as I had knackered it. Obviously the first Madstock was a momentous occasion. This one was quite difficult with all the Golden Circle thing and so on.I enjoy the playing, which has got very good this year as we have done a lot of shows. A lot of the other stuff is a bit of a pain but is part of it all. The money helps too, I cannot deny that. Thanks for all your support Chigs all the best Chrissy Boy
As a very anxious fan, I'm writing to you to say that I'm looking forward a lot to your concert in Moscow on the 8th of august, a lot of people have been waiting for a long time for you to come. Even though the event is staged as an open air festival,90% of the people are coming just to watch your performance, they will be there just for you. I wanted to ask if it would be possible to somehow take a picture with you and/or get an autograph?
Chrissy boy, ever thought of selling TLONF as a tourist guide at Trafalgar Square ?? Or has Boris spoken to you and the lads about giving you the keys to London for putting the City on the map ???? Leesy
Firstly let me acknowledge the great gig at Victoria, both with meeting new people and enjoying the entertainment laid on.
I would like to personally like to apologise to the young lady I was speaking to in the lounge area back stage as I believe I may have unintentionally offended, if you know who it was please pass on my sincere apology.
Unfortunately we where unable to stay in the lounge until you guys came in for a drink, after your yet again fine performance, as we had lost two of our party (Old Kev and Frank) and had arranged to meet back up in Camdon at the Dublin Castle if anyone got lost?
Took your advise to call at the Dublin Castle for a drink before catching the train over to the gig, Pass on my regards to Carl who I met walking down from the castle, I believe he had just called in previously, nice gesture.
Anyway, I have posted a picture of me and the guys from up North Patastic Frank Old Kev And lastly myself in the Dublin Castle Until next time, maybe we will meet up for a Pimms sometime, speak soon MadSuggsy
hi you lot, this aint a question just a big f*ckin thanks, went to victoria park was at the front you were brilliant, forth time iv seen you now and you get better, crackin gig lads sh*t hot,ps the album is sh*t hot too. cheers al (spen)
hi chris why no physical release for sugar and spice?? call me old fashioned but part of the joy of a new madness single release is the sleeve design and usually a real gem of a b-side.this is something you are renowned for. come on lads give us a physical release even if its limited edition.how am i going to continue my collection of quality singles with a download? am i the only one disappointed? cheers dave
Dear Dave, No, you are not. Sadly, we have a limited budget and it can be quite a cost. CB
No question, just wanted to share the good news, specifically that your new record is currently number 1 at our radio statio, as reported to the College Music Journal this week. JD Clauser, Music Director WMUH 91.7FM Allentown, Pennsylvania
Dear JD Thanks dude, your support is appreciated. Where do I send the cheque? you guys totally rock, CB
You often cover papa's got a brand new pigbag, and i listened to dr heckle and mr jive for the very first time this morning, and, well... it seems that that kind of nutty funky jazzy spacey music is THE reason why "they" don't legalise "it" ;-) Let the public be aware of that !
fred
thanks for that information Fred. I shall retain it for future reference. CB
Just wanted to thank you all for completing a fantastic week, and what a week! After Graduating @ Lincoln Cathedral I was Solo and Stomping around at Madstock. Two days later I did the same at Splendour in Nottingham. My week would have only been topped if you had spotted my ‘Madstock T shirt’ and given me a mention! :-)
I would like to point out two coincidences of Madness gigs, ‘The Pogues’ (please don’t do that again, what a waste Shane was in Nottingham) and the rain. However I noticed that it stopped raining on both occasions before Madness came on stage.
Bring on the next round of gigs. How about a complete ska/rockerbilly line up for a future gig??????
Oh yes one more thing and then I’ll shut up (well maybe two) Congratulations on ‘The Liberty of Norton Folgate’ Album, Madness are back where I knew you always belonged. And finally why do you never play ‘Shadow on my house’ I adore that one.
I'm 23 and have been a fan since i was about 4 jumping round the front room to all your classics on my dad's VHS! Have seen you several times, in Brighton and London, but have to say Madstock was the best yet, great mixture of new and old! FANTASTIC! Will be a fan forever, and have two new t shirts to prove it ;-) Jayne
Hello CB, Good to see Sugar and Spice released as a single, clearly it is genius but will it only be download or will there be vinyl and CD versions further down the line? Cheers for the Norton Folgate album, life affirming brilliance! Best album ever? Maybe... Rob
alright CB i was at madstock the other week and thought it was the best.the pogues were brilliant and people were complaining macgowan was drunk(what did they expect)but it nothing in comparison to when one step beyond started.i was at the front of the normal people (not the f*@$ing golden circle)and am 14.i am tall though so i was asked to take part in a lot of attempts to break into the circle.the gig was the best even considering that golden circle.at the end i was bruised but delighted. thanks danny, ireland
Thanks Danny, glad to hear it.Shane was drunk? No way! CB
Hi Chris Loved Madstock, managed to get my third set list and had a wonderful time. 48 hours later saw you all again at Splendour had just as much fun and tried to get an set list for my mate. Unfortunately they got collected and we were told they were going to be auctioned but your brilliant stage guys sent out some guitar picks to my friend and others. As there were three of you with guitars we can not figure out who's picks they were one, side says Jim Dunlop and the other side says USA Nylon 73mm. We think they were Mark's but we could be wrong. Anyway hope to see you at least one more time this year, maybe a Christmas tour? Phil AKA Minister of Madness
Dear Phil Bedders does'nt use a pick I use Hercos CB
isle of white Question: hi cb did you all know there was national scooter rally on the week end your doing your gig on the 30th august at carisbrooke? tell suggs i got a lambretta gp 1970 with a auto conversion thats 50bhp at the rear wheel does he want a go on it :-] nick smith
Hi Chris, Is it true that Sugar & Spice won't be released on cd & is going to be download only? If this is true, then it is surely the death of the single. How sad, but understandable, as i bet it costs a fair bit of cash to release in cd format. Also ,does this mean future releases will be download only? Thanks ,from Andy
Dear Andy Yes sorry about that. The next single I will look into it. CB
Hey boys, any chance you could bring me a box to stand on... saves me getting trampled trying to see ya lol.. Madstock was WICKED!!! many bruises to proove it lol See you isle of wight x Claire
Hi Chris! Thank to all of Madness for the superb new album. I can't imagine having anything less than the full box set version. It's everything I've loved about the band for 30 years, but deeper and richer! Reminds me of a line from "Nutty Theme""Everything else sounds bad!"
Anyway, I'm a US fan, and I've heard about the iTunes interview track. But it seems to be only available in the UK. Are there plans to put the interview on the US iTunes?

If only I saw it b4 hand as me and some friends had problems wiv one of our tickets not arrivin n havin loads of crap from the ticket offices. But neway we were there! Hello Chris! Thanks for a great concert in Victoria Park. I know its a bit early, but do you know which day you will arrive in Oslo? I am hoping to meet you at the airport in Oslo Bjorn
Dear Bjorn Sorry I don't know yet, probably on the day of the show. Start camping outside the airport now, in case we come early. thanks CB
Flew down from Edinburgh on the 17th for Madstock, seen you six times before between the Edinburgh Playhouse and Glasgows SECC but Victoria Park was the best for me yet. Phoned my kids when your big songs came on they had a concert in my living room, they want to go next year if its on.trying to see if its possible to see you in Oslo or the Isle of Man thanks for a grat night Tim Higgins
Just want to say how amazing Madstock was, you guys were great!! It was my 18th Birthday and i couldnt think of a better way to celebrate it. Ive been a big fan since my dad showed me your music (he was a massive fan) sadly he was killed in Iraq 6 years ago but i knew that he would of wanted me to spend my birthday that way! Ive been told by many friends and family that in the army mess where he was stationed he always put one step beyond on after a few drinks and had the whole place dancing :)! Hope to see you all again sooon, thank you again!!! Lauren x x x
Dear Lauren I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. He sounds like he was a right character. thanks and love Chris xx

Howdy! If you're interested I have uploaded a couple of reggae demos I've been working on. One is a serious political reggae song, We want the truth' and the other is 'What's wrong?'. I get a lot of influence from Marley, Aswad, UB40 , of course Madness and ska bands - Glasonbury was great by the way...Seeing Madness and The Specials was a real buzz!
Anyway, my songs are at MySpace.com/RussellWyllie. I also added the lyrics for 'We want the truth' on a link on the Myspace music player.
Hope you can find time to have a listen-
best wishes, Russell
Dear Russell I just did. The vocals are a bit too quiet, but not too bad. Keep it up. thanks CB
Hi ! I just want to tell you, that we in Czech Republic love MADNESS too !!!! I love you all and I´m looking forward to some gig in our country :) Your Mad Czech Fan Iveta
alright cb, was a bit shocked by all the critisism of the pogues by madness fans considering the strong links between the two bands, also because i have been a fan of both bands and their ilk since the early days....where do you think it comes from? also thouroughly enjoyed my night and i was in the gold circle and didnt experience anything unpleasant....long may you all continue......thanks alan
Thank Alan Glad you were OK. We all like the Pogues. I suppose they are not 'SKA' are they? My wife does'nt like the Pogues though, so she didn't come.Happy daze... CB
what a brillant time we had, watching in the front with my blonde wig on,and not forgetting my tiger dress, madness you really done good, such professionals, shame on you guys throwing plastic bottles at the band. The nutty men see you next year i will try and stay forever young x x x MadRaq
Dear MadRaq I thought I told you to wear a Donkey Jacket and wellies. Ah well. thanks CB
CB, Thanks for an awesome show at Madstock. I travelled down from Leicestershire with my 11 yr old boy (who has seen Madess 7 times now!). We were in the golden circle and had a fantistic time!
Please can you let me know if there are plans to release another live DVD? It would be great to have captured that show on DVD!
no question just wanted to say thanks for last weekends gig in nottingham. It was just mad seeing you guys in my local park. please come back soon. jim kershaw
Hi Chris...big thanks for two great days (madstock and broadlands)...that makes 50 plus madness gigs now and still loving every one like the first..even managed to get the set list from broadlands gig....so big thanks again for keep performing for so many years...long my you continue....Mark
Just a quick comment/question regarding the brilliant next single Sugar and Spice. Lyrically it's quite a nod to Squeeze's Up The Junction with the whole "young love turns sour" theme. are you guys on good terms with the Deptford crew? I hope you are as I'm a big fan of you both and would hate to have my loyalty tested! All the best. Stuart
Dear Stuart I don't really know any of them that well. I think Suggs knows some of the band. Chris Difford lives in Brighton, so who knows I may meet him one day. They were a great band. CB
Hi Chris, I'm only 12 years old but i love madness, you guys are the kings of ska and nothing will ever stop you, but where did you guys start off to become as big as you are? Write back, new album sounding ace. -Louis
Dear Louis There is a bit on this site above me that says 'about' It tells you all about how we started which was in 1976. thanks CB
Dear Chris,is the Dulbin Castle ok with strangers in and out cos i'd like to pop in for a drink with the miss's and people tend to want to punch me for some reason, don't know why i'm quite a nice chap really!! Mark of Feltham
Mark....from Feltham! Very territorial, I'll have you!It should be OK. Mind you, the last time I went in I said to the landlord Henry 'I like the the sawdust on the floor look very countryside inn'. He said 'that's last night's furniture'. He is a nice man,ask for him and tell him I sent you. CB
hi, has i have grown up so to speak with the nutty boys, i find myself disappointed, that your online shop dont cater for any one bigger than xl in sizes, even at the gigs you go to bye clothing to remember the occasion and still cant get anything bigger than xl, could you have any influence and try to get bigger sizes, and can i say, IT DONT MATTER WHICH GIG YOU GO TO, THE BOYS ALWAYS PUT ON THE BEST SHOW, BUT I DO WISH THE WOULD COME TO SHEFFIELD SAVE ME TRAVELLING THE LENGHT OF BRITAIN, although donny was great last year.Greg
Just a quick post to say fanatstic gig at Wollaton Park last sunday, was great to hear take it or leave it again! My dads first madness gig too, he loved it! All the best, Lee
hiya madstock woz my 1st madstock concert but my 5th madness concert an that woz by far the best one iv been to thank you and the rest of the band for making it a good night and are you doing anotha madstock next year and is this one coming out on dvd cheers chris
It's been a long time Sir, I've missed you. I move to Gore Road tomorrow morning opposite the park. Had to miss Madstock to look after my girlfriend after she had an operation on her foot. Real shame... will you come back and do another next year as access will be perfect.
Much love,
Jimi
Hello Jimi I've missed you too.w We will probably do something but I don't think in Victoria Park. all the best Chris
Chrissy Boy, Saw you at Broadlands last weekend, great stuff really enjoyed it, 'Night boat to Cairo' at the end was the dogs. Was great to hear 'Take it or Leave it' live, a favourite of mine from my favourite album 'Absolutely'. I remember hearing you play 'Close Escape' and 'On the Beat Pete' a couple of years back at Bournemouth, just wondered if you ever play at gigs my other favourites from that album 'Not home Today' and 'Shadow of Fear'?
Also, how come your albums are so hard to get on CD and they have not been reissued again? I got 'One Step Beyond' and 'Absolutely' on CD back in the 90's but have spent ages tracking down '7' and 'Rise and Fall', had to pick them up second hand.
Gonna try to get over to see you on the Isle of Wight, all the best.
Cheers Jon
Thanks Jon, Our albums were deleted until we signed a deal with Union Square Music earlier this year. They are about to re release One Step Beyond and the other albums will follow. As for performing older songs it's nice to do but we don't rehearse enough. We did Take It or Leave in the soundcheck for Madstock and it worked well. Most of the time this year we haven't even had a soundcheck. CB
Hi - Thanks for Madstock. We had an absolutly amazing time and Madness were as brilliant as ever. Do you know where to find out any info about Jerry Dammer's band? They were awesome and we wondered whether he has any plans to record their material or tour the band (especially up north)in the near future. Many Thanks Andrea x
Dear Andrea I don't really know, so I can't comment on that. CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, just would like to say a big thank u from myself and a few friends who were at victoria park last week, it was a fantastic gig. This was the 3rd time we've seen u guys live (birmingham 93, madstock 98) and it was the best all round show so far. Also just quickly, the new album is great, and on behalf of all us nutty fans, A BIG THANK U FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS, long may it continue, u boyz are still the nuts and good to see u back in the foreground, which is where u belong. If u could kindly forward this message to the rest of the band, it would be much appreciated. From Tote, Matty, Bert, Marina, Jenny, Amy, Caroline and Joseph. Thank u once again, take care and enjoy your rest..
Addicted to Liberty to the point my CD player complains when I play anything else. It really is magnificent.
Know an edited version of the album is in the box but is there any chance of a heavy heavy monster full vinyl pressing of the album for us black plastic junkies?
All the best
Funky the
Dear Funky I would love to do this at some point. thanks CB
Just say thanks for Madstock. We come about 20 lads from Barcelona and around and the day was magnific. Was great. In other way, just say than we agreed with one of your managers (jaimie) a meeting when you came last year to Sonar fest in Barcelona, cos we have some presents for yours (including a Barca shirt with the name of Madness and the number 08 -for the year- behind) but finally we can't meet. I have this shirt at home, maybe one day we can meet or i can't send. Just say thanks and we're waiting for another Madstock. Regards from Barcelona

david (Barcelona madness Supporters Club)
Dear David You can send the shirt to our management address, it is on this site. CB
I have always wondered is there a Studio version of Johnny The Horse with the acoustic intro?
If there is no studio version do you have a good quality live version that you could upload to the M Section. I have a few live bootlegs but none of them sound very good.
Many thanks Dicka
Dear Dicka Bootlegs! How dare you!Just a joke I don't think we have any versions, we have'nt done it for a while. CB
MADNESS/ASWAD/THE DUALERS - BROADLANDS, ROMSEY, HAMPSHIRE 18TH JULY 2009
To quote one of Madness's songs it was very "Grey Day" in Romsey and everyone had come prepared with Wellington's, coats and umbrellas however fortunately the rain stayed away. The venue in set in the grounds of Lord Mountbatten's beautiful home "Broadlands which is surrounded by the beautiful Hampshire countryside. 1st band on were The Dualers who are a ska band made up of Si and Tyber on vocals with an impressive 8 piece ska orchestra who really get the crowd warmed up with a great set including some well chosen Ska covers including "Monkey Man" , "Shame N Scandal" and "Message to you Rudy". Si and Tyber really know how entertain an audience these guys deliver some really excellent vocal performances, with other notable tracks such "Jack the Ripper", "Take a Trip" and "Kiss on the Lips" the band leaves the stage with lots of new fans earned from the Romsey crowd. The unmistakeable reggae bass of "Aswad" thundered out around Broadlands. they played some of their most well known hits such as "Shine" and "Don't turn Around" through their paces along with some tracks from their latest album "City Lock" . The duo of Drummie Zeb (vocals and drums), and Tony Gadd (bass, keyboards, vocals) along with their band are probably Britain's 2nd best known reggae band after Birmingham's UB40 and their performance is just one of only a handful of live performances the band are playing this year. Their new single "What is Love" which is a great version of "Howard Jones" 80's classic is played and most of the audience of a certain age sing along.
After the support acts warming up the audience there is an almost party atmosphere in the air, Chas Smash walks out stage and says the familiar line of "Don't watch that watch this, this is the heavy heavy monster sound, the Nuttiest sound around" the audience finish the lyrics and the band launch into "One Step Beyond", the whole of the place just starts dancing together, young and old alike are here today as Madness celebrate over thirty years together. In 1981 when I was just 12, my parents bought myself and my sister for Christmas tickets to go and see our 1st ever live concert at Poole Arts Centre, it was Madness, those then fresh faced Nutty Boys gave me my introduction to live music, what a show they put on then and what a show they put on now with exactly the same line-up, all a little greyer and fatter including myself and not many bands around today can boast the same line-up. The slow version of "My Girl" started with Mike Barson's piano and then "Sugg's" joining in on vocals along with everyone in the place singing effortlessly along. Surprise of the night had to be a great album track from "Absolutely", "Take It or Leave it", Madness do have some brilliant singles, however there are also some impressive album tracks that sometimes get over-looked from their live set. The only slight disappointment of the night was the fact we only got to hear a few songs from the latest album "The Liberty of Norton Folgate", "Nw5" , "Dust Devil" and "Forever Young" are excellent tracks and played live got a great reception from the crowd, it is just a shame we did not get to hear more from this great album especially the title track. The set ended with a storming version of "Night Boat to Cairo" starting with a couple of loud ship horn style blasts on Lee Thompson's saxophone, this signalled for once again everybody to dance and dance they did, the band bought on to the stage all of their offspring to finish of their set in great style. There were smiling faces everywhere, everyone from what I can see had a fantastic night, the Nutty boys sure do know how to entertain even after all these years.

Hi, wondering if you can help me with my bad memory. We came to see Madness at the Bristol Hippodrome in the early '80's, Sugs was having a technical hitch with his mike....there was a girl band as support but can for the life of me remember who it was. Wondering if you could help. Many thanks. PS Have blipped many of your tunes recently..Suzanne
Dear Suzanne The Go Gos. They put Tabasco sauce on his mike as it happens - was that it? Or was it the Belle Stars in 1981 What's blipped? CB
Of the prospective singles you can play on your myspace page, "Forever Young" has by far the most. So as a market research exercise surely this indicates it should be released as the (final) single from the new album. Do a radio edit to make it slightly shorter than the album version, add a vintage video and perhaps one of the limited edition tracks not on the mainstream album and i think you would have a top 30 hit on your hands."Sugar and Spice" a decent song, but not being promoted and no signs of the required radio play required to make it a hit sadly. One more single, and it has to be "Forever Young". Think it would do very well. trind
Dear Trind Good idea. We have done a radio edit mix, well Woody did and it's pretty good. CB
My 11 year old son is particularly inspired by your drumming. I'd be grateful if you would tell him the reason you persevered to the success you now have. Any tips would be gratefully received. Thanks. I'd appreciate it.Edward Jones
Dear Edward I'm not much good on the drums you know.Tell him not to cross his hands and er..hit them good and hard and learn reggae drumming. CB
Hi crissy boy just want to send a great big thanks to you and the rest of the gang for your gig at nottingham 19th july.Just what people of nottingham needed a pick up and great to see your still on form.Myself wife son and brother and nottingham folk got big respect for you lot and er is suggs still interested in buying wollaton hall? dont leave it to long till you return many thanks john mandy ali and all nottingham folk thankyou. john and mandy
I have the piano books for the albums, and The Rise and Fall is one of my favourites so I thought I'd provide the chords to Primrose Hill. Here goes... Intro: Eb (4 beats), Fm (2 beats), Bbsus4 (1 beat), Bb (1 beat). Verse: (2 beats per chord) G#m, G#m(dim5)/D, C#m7/F#, Bm, F#m, F#m(dim 5)/C, Am9, Am x2. Chrous: (2 beats per chord) Gm, Am, Gm, Am, Gm, Am, Bbm, Dm. Sax solo: Am, Bbm. Brass solos: G#m, D#7, F#m, C#7, Em, F#7, Eb7, D7.
OK, think that's enough chords for now. (Hope they look right Chris!) Danielle X
Sooooooo excited just got tickets to the above. As a Madness gig virgin, brilliant to finally get to see you all after listening/dancing for all these years - you r family! Lets hope the sun shines down on us. Sxxx
Hi CB Just been looking at some of the messages about Madstock. I was there in the Golden Circle and couldn't help but have a few words with someone who was stood at the front with a very small child about the safety aspect!I was very polite and pointed out that the surge takes place as soon as you start one step beyond.. but apparently he had been before and knew that! Anyway.. perhaps a family ticket/area might be a better option in future for those people who want to take their kids? Although I suppose it is down to the individual to be responsible enough to ensure the safety of their own children!Anyway it was a great day ..just wish I could remember it all but unfortunately those people who wander around selling lager straight from a back pack to save queing at the bar make it all to easy to over indulge! Hurry up with the DVD so that I can fill in the gaps!Helen
dear c.b as usual you were on top form ,with a very good set list. especially take it or leave it,but dont you think it was a bit silly to sell beer in glass bottles and cans ,I know this was nothing to do with the band ,but after witnessing two little kids being hit in the golden circle by bottles and cans thrown from outside i thought perhaps you could pass this on to whoever has control over such things. cheers sid
Dear Sid The beer was in plastic bottles as far as I know. Someone must have smuggled it in.Stupid behaviour really. thanks CB
Hi chris having read the comments on here i would like to share our experinces, yes i have to admit there was i time that i thought no tickets would turn up but i kept the faith (just). My wife is pregnant so we were a little worried about her getting crushed in the golden circle, no need at all she had a great view of the whole gig plenty of room to dance (well waddle about a bit) and the atmoshpere was that good we left her with her friend and went to be kids at the front and jump around getting crushed. shame about the number that turned up as i have seen you many many times including Finsbury and this was by far your best yet. thanks for an amazing night and the reassurance with the tickts. when do we get to do it all again ?????
Cheers Kieran, Jodie (and bump), Oliver & Nina
Dear Kieran, Jodie (and bump), Oliver & Nina Glad you survived. Next one? Er...I'll get back to you CB
