Hello. Chrissy Boy here, back where I belong.
Send me a question and I’ll answer it.
Within reason. Nothing about “when's the next gig” please. That’s
in the bit called “gigs” on the main page at the top. If you want
to just say hello to any of us, please feel free to post a comment.
Thanks CB x
We know better...
Chris, you have my life time support. With all respect to Robbie, what has he done to music to recieve the award?? If album sales are the norm, the award is prone to the flavour of the year judgement. It's a crying shame Madness hasn't recieved it yet.
Take care, Andre PS. Did I read somewhere in the cupboard you might be coming to Holland?? I know, I know, look at the 'upcoming gigs'section... ;)
Dear Andre It is nothing really. Holland? Did I say that?.......Hopefully. CB
Not really a question this time CB, but had to tell you that not only am I seeing you lovely lot twice in December, I've just got tickets to see the other love of my music life Paul McCartney in December too, and they are front block tickets !!
So what with seeing Madness 3 times this year, buying Norton Folgate boxed set and Beatles boxed set, seeing Spandau Ballet this week (they were fantastic !), and now seeing Paul, it has been a very expensive but brilliant year !! So thanks Madness for your part in it. I'm off now to sell my body,(all those 50p's soon mount up you know!) Sharon x
Dear Sharon You'll more for the cakes, surely? Stick to what you know best love, don't sell yourself short...At least a pound. thanks CB
Hi Chris, i'm 29 been a massive madness fan for years and so are lot of my mates. Seen you live many times and theres one thing thats a real shame! Its always a greatest hits set when there is so many brilliant album tracks. It always seems to be the same album tracks you play live ie bed and breakfast man, madness or take it or leave it. I'm sure there would be a market for playing say just songs of the first 3 albums and early b sides/12 inch songs. To me and a lot of people that would be a truely amazing gig to go and see. Any cahnce of doing something like that ? certainly more interesting than hearing sund and the rain etc !! One last thing, on the town should be next single or that close which is the best song on the album!! Cheers Nick Giles
Dear Nick This subject is a cause of some heated debate amongst the band. I agree with you.I think there will be some changes. CB
Dear Mr CJ Foreman,i have just read in the paper that Robbie ( the tool) Williams is to get a lifetime award at next years Brits, what a complete joke and a total fix, again you have been overlooked for some TOOL. After TLONF was in the running for a Mercury as well. I will be writing to my MP to complain and will be starting a petition on the Downing Street website to have this overturned, i am disgusted.Anyway my wife Denise and i will be on our sixth Madness concert in four years when you play Birmingham o2 hope to see you all then.My two year old daughter Izzy watches Tolal Madness DVD every morning and my eight year old Jordan knows nearly every word to every single keeping the nutty train going. Cheers mate Gary.
Dear Gary You are not serious? Your local MP? you are having a laugh. I am not worried about the Brits, none of us are. Ring him for something more important like the wheelie bins or something. thanks CB
Hi Chris, firstly can I echo all the praise for the 'Liberty' album. Got the box set and have to say it is still played constantly.'Seven Dials' is a personal fave, but not a weak track in the whole collection.
Following on from the suggestion to re record Mad Not Mad (please do), what about the off shoots, (Suggs' solo stuff and Crunch)? You did '4am' on the wonderful 'Wonderful' album, but what about some of the other tracks given the Madness treatment. At worst they could be added tracks to any future cd singles, and at best (cost permitting) you could re-record an album of selected tracks from those particular albums.
Looking forward to all the re releases + bonus tracks.
See you in Belfast
thanks a lot Jim, I think we should keep it 'in the family' and just do Madness stuff. CB
Just had to say that Liberty is one of my fave albums of all time. Been loyal to you from the early days and can honestly say you have managed to produce stuff to suit my every mood, drama and crisis. Loved the recent shows on C4 and hope you will keep on keeping on. When I was ill many years ago following a brain haemhorrage it was you guys that helped me see the light of day at the end of a very dark tunnel. Forever in you debt. Love and hugs to you all. Julie
Dear Julie I am glad we helped you in some way to recover. thanks and love Chris x
dear Chris, first of all sorry about my first question about the schedule release of madness titles...I've seen your answers about too late! Second I really like to know something about the book"THE NUTTY SOUND:THE STORY OF MADNESS" by John Reed. Is it done with your "co-operation"? Will it really be released in october 2010? (one year before announced?) thanks again giorgio
Dear Gorgio I don't know anything about this book. sorry CB
hiya guys just bought 2 tickets for the gig in the 02 london it's a present from me and my hubby to each other for our silver wedding anniversary got my outfit sorted rude girl style (well old woman now). Cant wait now be great to meet with you all supose that out of the question. I do have one question for you though who will be supporting you? many thanks for your time Traceyx
Dear Tracey I don't know who the support act is. thanks CB
Hiya CB just found out that Robbie Williams is 2 receive the outstanding contribution award at next years Brits Disgusting.Surely youll get it soon. Also were you aware of the death of the lead singer of Flowered Up recently the Camden band who so impressed me at the original Madstock. martin
Dear Martin I'm not too about Robbie Flippin' Williams. It's a great shame about Liam from Flowered Up. CB
Hey my name is christina clark and if possable need a little help if you can i have looked every where for this song and not many people have heard of it.My dad is a really big fan of madness and he has asked me to try and find a song called shoplifter that he had on a single when he was a teenager. i was woundering how i could get hold of this song for him ? is there any change you can help me at all?? thank you for your time to read this and i hope you can help.. Kc xx ( christina clark)
Dear Christina It's called Deceives the Eye. It was a b-side.
Hi Chrissy Boy Does the lack of Brit annoy you? What has Robbie Williams done to deserve a lifetime achievement award that you guys haven't? I will be boycotting watching the Brits again this year. See you in Bournemouth in December.
Dear Matt I am so What was the question? He's probably sold more records than us in the last few years. What was the question? CB
Johnny the Horse seems to have disappeared down a wormhole in the space/time continuum - what on earth has happened? We worry about trivia like global warming and the international banking crisis but this glaring miscarriage of musical justice remains unaddressed. Can I assume that the Honourable Members for Camden Town will take up the fight? Mack Robinson
I recently read that there were aborted sessions for a follow up to Mad Not Mad.
1) Were any tracks completed?
2) Do you reckon they may see the light of day?
Dear Mike Some of the songs ended up on 'The Madness'. Gabriels Horn, Be Good Boy, Song In Red and 11th Hour were recorded at this time, then re recorded. If I can find them, they should see the light of day. I think they were really good versions, with Mark and Woody playing on them. CB
Chrissy,I emailed the other month and jim kindly sent me the two photographs signed by all the guys. I told you that I had (a before I kick the bucket list after beating cancer for the second time. Well heres another to strike of my list. Firstly I got to see the boys at the Isle of Wight Gig, 2nd I got your autographs and heres one for you all.Remember the porkpie hat from Dunne Co in the 1960's Worn by all the skins and you lot as well. I wanted to get a new one but they have not been made for 30 years. I found out who made them for Dunne co and asked if they could make me one? WELL THEY DID and whats more they are now going to reintroduce it as a special order item and they are naming it after me - (THE MADDERN PORKPIE)and I am being given the licence to sell it again after all these years. If the gang would like to get an original porkpie just drop me an email with their head sizes and it will be my pleassure. How about that for one to cross of my list. It Must be the Mad in my name thats driving me on coz no one ever thought It would happen. God Bless ya lads regards Keith Maddern
Dear Keith That is fantastic. I will send this on to the band. You have my admiration. respect, Chris
Hi Chrissy Boy How come Bedders has left the band again? What a crying shame. He seemed well up for it on the Camden Crawl when he was interviewed recently. Are you able divuldge without betraying confidences. Matty
Dear Matty It can drive you nuts and he has other things to get on with. As do I, that's enough for one day... CB
hello cb i was at the gig in castlebar 31st july 1982. my first ever madness gig.do you remember a beer can was tossed at you from the crowd and you jumped up and caught it in one hand while still playing the guitar?.............. tony byrne
Dear Tony Ah - they were the days. I don't think I could do that now.Play the guitar that is... CB
Well Hello There (AGAIN!) It's Shannan,Weird As It Sounds I Look Up To You And The Boys Well More Then I Should Do (Belive Me Ask leah Rix Haha) Well Ok Here It Goes
Suggs:Big Bro Who I Can Trust To Tell Any Thing I Dont Wanna Tell Me Dad Woody:Big Bro Who Would Snitch But Still Love Chas:Other Bro I Can Trust Bedders:Uncle Barso:Family Friend You:Me Dad Thomo:Grandad ....So Like I Said I Know It's Weird But That's What Living In The Life Is Like Been me! Shannan
Dear Shannan I like it - Thommo the Grandad. He is younger than me by about a year... CB
Hi Chris, My husband is a huge, massive fan and has been for ever....I've just managed to get tickets for your sold out gig in Leeds on 8th December through ebay - his 40th birthday surprise!!!! I know you get loads of requests to meet the band but it would make his lifetime to be able to meet you guys?? We own a shop in Leeds selling light and sound equipment, if you are in need of any equipment whilst you are up North check us out! Thanks in advance, Jo
Hello Chris I'm a lifelong fan of madness (which isn't that difficult as I've only been here 16 years, and madness are a great band), and decided to take up bass about two years ago. I just wondered: what is the model of bass that Bedders is using these days? It's the nice red one without a scratchplate. Cheers! Hal
Not enough space for the congratulations and thanks for your career and music also in my life. so, the question. just had in my hands the splendid re-issue of ONE STEP BEYOND through salvo records...I know there will be all albums in program and I'm excited about but...do you already know the schedule of the next releases (around)? many thanks again from torino, italy giorgio
Dear Giorgio Early next year we will re release Absolutley and Seven. ciao CB
Hello Chris, I just read your reply to an earlier question about Mad Not Mad and your idea of re-recording it with Barso .As the rights to MNM are owned by Virgin(?),by re-recording it ,would the band then own the rights to any new versions of those songs? thus allowing a CD release , as i understand the original MNM is not going to be re-released like all your other album. Also is this the reason Yesterdays Men,Uncle Sam etc were left off Total Madness? Thanks from Andy
Dear Andy If we re recorded it we would own it. The reason those songs are missing is correct.I am optimistic that EMI will re release it, as I still have some pals there CB
Hi Chris If you were to get round to re-recording Mad Not Mad would you release it as 'The Dangermen Sessions Volume 2-Mad Not Mad', as it would, after all, be an album of cover versions?
On a more serious note, if it did happen, could you please re-record All I Knew as well? This has long since been my favourite Madness B side, perhaps even song.
Ironically it is a song I'd have liked you to have worked on a little more to bring it up to Mad Not Mad's quality of production as despite its greatness it doesn't quite sound finished to me. The lyrics are so poignant.
Looking forward to the Christmas gigs as ever.
Dear Paul Who knows? It was just [my] an idea. Thommo has blabbed. CB PS CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE MY 3000th ANSWER! I will get something appropiate sent to you.couldn't happen to a nicer train spotter, etc..
Hi chris, i had a tape a long long time ago which i have since lost. There was a song on it which i can't find on any cd since although i though i had all the stuff, All i can remember is that it was by far the fastest song i have heard from you can you suggest what it might be?
sorry to be so vague but i wass only a nipper and havn't heard it in years
Dear Stuart Decieves the Eye? On The Beat Pete? that is really fast lyrically..Give me some slack at least an approximate year. CB
Hey Chrissy Boy, Wondered this for along time. Ever since i first saw Take it or Leave it many years ago, I wondered if Madness would ever release Sunshine Voice, or was it ever recorded, never heard a full version of it, but a real shame its not out there. Jayney
Dear Jayney [Again-ey] It was never recorded properly. CB
Hi CB, Just wondering if anything will be updated in the exclusive members section of the website, when i bought my copy of the boxset it said that there would be a "myriad of exclusive features, content and opportunities spanning 2009", but there isn't really anything amazing in there, plenty of vid and audio but i thought the "Opportunities" bit would mean, competitions and stuff like that but nothing really like that. Will there be anything like that in the future?? Jayney
Dear Jayney It's more audio and video than anything else. I do try to keep it up to date. CB
Hi Chris, just to say I received an e-mail from Gary White today about the the Crucks Marching Band playing at the Brighton show in December. I was already very much looking forward to the show and this will be very exciting. We had a brilliant day at Madstock and appreciated it very much and thought you guys were terrific. thanks again and all the best, Richard
ive just ordered a book called the nutty sound;story of madness, are you aware of it.Its written by john reed, also the one step beyond book by Terry Edwards.lastly im afraid i cant make xmas gigs so hope to see you next year. jim
Dear Jim The John Reed one I know nothing about, it is unauthorised. Terry's one is very good. next time CB
Hi Chris, I've been a total fan since I was 3 and my little boy totally loves Madness too. I'd love to take him to the Matinee in Newcastle but he's just turned 3 so I was wondering whether the matinee will be too loud? Cheers Jules
Dear Jules It all depends, some kids don't mind it. Mine can sit at the side of the stage and don't care less. You can get headphones. I saw loads of people at Glastonbury with their kids on a backpack miles away from any noise with these yellow headphones on but I thought what's the point? He's probably too young, if you ask me. Which you did.If you still decide to come, stand near the back, he should be OK. CB
Hi Chris. Hope you are well, I awoke this morning to the great news that Madness have just added dublin 28th December to the xmas tour, although nothing mentioned on a madness front. Ticket master posted the gig early today. Maybe now would be a good time to return that lucky old towel to chas that I got last year in Dublin. Only kidding thats under lock and key anyway myself and my 14 year old son had a brilliant time at madstock and were looked after very well in camden town We got to get our photos taken with both his good self and jennie bellestar and travelled down from camden in an old two tone bus along with jenny ( what a lady ). Looking forward to seeing you all again..third time this year, god bless the old credit cards..im still paying for dublin last year. Anyway thats it for now. God bless you all Declan
thanks Declan, for all your time and money. all the best CB
HOWYA CHRISSY BOY CAN'T BELIEVE MADNESS ARE COMING OVER TO DUBLIN ON THE 28TH DECEMBER,CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU GUYS,THANKS A MILLION FOR MAKING THIS CHRISTMAS EXTRA SPECAIL,JUST THANKS - I MEAN THAT,SEE YOUSE IN DECEMBER,GOING UPSTAIRS TO POLISH THE LOAFERS NOW AND GET THE GEAR READY THANKS ONCE AGAIN FROM THE BIGGEST MADNESS IRISH FAN GAFFO
How did you feel personally at the time when One Better Day was opted for a single over Victoria Gardens? As much as I love One Better Day (a beautiful song), Victoria Gardens has always been one of my all time favorite Madness songs. Do you know if all 3 available versions of Victoria Gardens (LP Version/B-Side of One Better Day 12"/The Business box set) will be collated for the remastered edition of Keep Moving? Thanks for any insights, Paul.
Dear Paul I can't say it scarred me emotionally, to tell the truth. Three differant versions? ........The mind boggles. There was a good sort of dubby mix, that should be on there. CB
i have just received my tickets for the matinee in newcastle and i would like to thank u7 for being such a nice bunch of very thoughtfull chaps and my kid thanks u more but were do we stand for the autographs cos its the dad whos been the fan longer ? wil
I will be at the bournemouth gig on dec 1st have booked and b and b as its a long way to go.
Please look out for me small female down the front i will be alone as all the rest got tickets for plymouth i just missed out..
hope the gigs go well
any chance of a hello would be fantastic thanks
Dear Netty A small female down the front? Should be easy. Can't you dye your hair bright pink or something and have a shirt with Netty on it? Then I might remember to give you a shout.Don't get squashed. CB
Hey Chris, I tried so hard to request you as my friend on myspace but it just wouldn't except the name Foreman in the little box. So after i had a little cry i decided id send you a little message instead. Needless to say i think you are amazing as thats exactly what everyone thinks of you so i won't bore you.. lol thats if you can ever tire of hearing how wonderful you are! Anyway would absolutely love to hear from you. As im new on there, but we seem to have a few friends in common already. You could always add me if ya like ?? Hehe can't say i didn't try hard! Lisa xx missmadness76
Dear Lisa Myspace? I hardly ever go on it.Do you know how it works? I don't think you just enter Foreman in the little box you know. CB
Hi Chris, Will you be playing the same set in the afternoon as on the night? I ask this because although I'm 45, my dear wife keeps telling me I act like a 12 year old and I would like to see all the songs played that the grown ups will see in the night show. By the way, Libery is a fantastic album, your best yet. See you in geordie land. Davey
hello. Daniel here. you guys are awsome. I wish I could come to one of your gigs. Unfortantly, I really can't because... well ... I'm broke >.< traveling to britain isn't that cheap nowadays, and since I'm "only" 15, I cant go with just some friends, because you can't travel alone when your not 18 yet. So at least 1 parent should accompany us. But most of our parents are really lazy and wouldn't even think about helping us. So my question is: Why don't you give some gigs in the rest of europe ? Belgium is a silly place, I bet there are more fans out there just like me who would just love to see you guys live on stage !It would be great to come see you guys in the lotto arena in antwerp, or the AB in brussels.
thank you and goodbye ^^
Dear Daniel Holland isn't too far from you...we might be there sometime. CB
Dear Chris, I have google'd the web and I have also tried to send an e-mail to Terry from his official website, but I couldn't do it. When you bump into him can you thank him for a wonderfull book about an album of an upcoming group in the 80\'s. ;) It was great to get some behind stories about the songs who defined my youth. I hope he will do the same and write books about the other albums this band made. It is true that there is not a lot of books published about Madness, I therefore have to confess (and I aplogize f I have offended any of you), but I have ordered the unofficial biography about Madness. Back in the days when I was still young and there was no internet, I would cut out every bit of newspaper clipping about the Magnificent 7. NME, Dutch music papers, everything I could get my hands on. I still have the collections somehwere in the attic. These days I would rather settle for a good book, my comfy chair and a glass of some sorts. One Step Beyond 33 1/3 lasted one good Sunday + listning to B-sides (the little gems). We want more, we want more, please...
Take care and give everyone, again, my warm felt thanks for 30 years of Madness. This year has been a rollercoaster ride of memory lane feelings. 30 years have flown by so fast, incredible.
Dear Andre You will probably have to subscribe to Terry Edwards.com then he will have you, or try his myspace page. thanks CB CB
hi id just like to let you know my nan recently had her 80th and there was some bad bad music! but when they put on the legendary copmplete madness the party took off! Even i danced and id like to add you showed up the specials (and at glastonbury) and blondie! thanks chrissy boy! ben
Hi "boys" !!! I'm an italian fan from Rome. I'm a "boy" too ( 46 y/o) and I'm proud to see band is still alive and strong. still remember when I've attended yr fantastic gig in Rome ... a long time ago now... it was Oct 14 1980 and I was 17 !! great times !! Hope to see you in Rome soon !!
Tks and bye bye from Rome !!
Dear Matteo We will come to Milan. A long way I know.. ciao CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, You have played the song Shop Around (great version) for many years live along with Oh My Love (just love your version of the song). Are you going to include these fabulous songs on any of the re-issues.Would love to hear the studio versions of these songs.Looking forward to the release of ONE STEP BEYOND again only seems like yesterday i bought the LP not 30 years ago. All the best you guys just love everything you do 30 years a fan.See you in Glasgow can't wait. Cheera Andy .
Dear Andy I want to save Oh My Love and we never recorded Shop Around. thanks and all the best CB
Dear Chris, I remember sending in a question ages ago, (either to the old website, or to the one Chas used to have) asking if you'd ever consider taking a string or brass section on tour. Chas (jokingly) replied along the lines of "no - do you relise how much these things cost?." But it's nice to hear the Violin Monkeys on stage with you these days. Whose idea was it to bring them along? Regards, Graham.
Dear Graham It all started in 2003, when Thommo requested a sax roadie, so we got the legendary Steve Turner in and the next thing you knew he was doing all the hard bits for Thommo [for example the sax solo in One Better Day at Guilfest 2003]. Then with the Dangermen Suggs said we really need a trombone so they got in Mike and Joe trombone and trumpet and we can't get rid of them now really, they are legend. They did some brilliant stuff on the Liberty album. CB
Hi can you please answer a question..where does the name "Suggs" come from as its not an abbreviation of his name ?? ordered my tickets for Hogmany the day they were released..will have to ask santa for thermals for xmas ..outdoors concert in December in Scotland... brrrrrr ! Helen
Dear Helen He picked the name at random from a book of Jazz musicians. CB
Dear Chrissy Boy My daddy is going to take me to see Madness when you play in Newcastle and I'm dead excited. Would you be able to play for me either the song about the scary train, the song about driving in me car, the just another day song (because i like the whistling bit and its one of my dad's favourites) or the song about rainbows (but tell Suggs not to say p!55ed cos my dad says its a rude word)
Jack Sharpe (age 5 and a half)
Dear Jack We will try to do one of them and cover your ears up if Suggs says a naughty word... CB
Its a total long shot but what are the chances of getting to meet the band at the O2 Acdemy in December? I'm at the 2:30 show on the 12th. Ive been to see you loads of times but i still havent been lucky enough to meet you yet, even just to get a pic taken with you. It really would make my Christmas If I could ut I know how busy you are so its fine if theres not a hope in hell, I thought it was worth asking. See you all in December ;)
Dear Wayne There is always a chance.Just hang around - who knows? thanks CB
Hi My name is Liam, i'm twenty one years old, and am a massive fan. I have been from as far back as i can remember, since the first time i heard, house of fun. My fiancee has bought me tickets to see you guys at birmingham in december, the first time ever and am very excited. I have bought myself ska clothes including: a trilby hat, sunglasses, thin black tie.... well you get the idea, i will be wearing it on the night. Anyway will look forward to the night, stay cool nutty boys Liam p.s would love to meet you
Hi Chris First of all you've heard it all before but thanks for being such a great band. Partly thanks to being a fan of Madness I moved to the UK 6 years ago and met a lovely British bloke, and I'm pretty much settled down here now. Anyway, I have been wondering why you never play "Cardiac Arrest" live? Is it because it was banned years ago and you're scared someone might still sue the band for offensive lyrics? I think this song is just brilliant and I love the video. Just before I go, TLONF is a brilliant album, and if you could pop in Cardiff in your next tour that would be great. Thanks! x Do
Question.... Chris, Many moons ago when i was at Uni up in Liverpool i saw the band play a miners benifit gig. I can clearly remember you playing a song where Mr Paul Weller took over the vocals, but for the life of me i can't recall what the song was? also do you have it saved on tape somewhere as i would love to hear it again? Did you ever get around to seeing The Jam live in there hey-day? I was fortunate enough to see you both play with in a few weeks of each other at the Hammy Pally back in Nov/Dec 1981 happy days! jane
Dear Jane The song was Shop Around, originally by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.Sorry there are no tapes of it, as far as I know. thanks CB
Hello my good man, Just a quick question for you. many many years ago you played a festival in Ireland, at a place called Castlebar, at the time the greatest day of my short life, however I can not find the date of said concert and i really would like to know. One reason I want to know is that the next day a photo of me was on the front page of the national paper and I really want to get a hold of the paper. Please can you help. Paul PS: Thank you for 30 years of pure pleasure, genius, fun, laughter, sweat, and copious other positives, you guys are the soundtrack to my life. Paul Kavanagh
Dear Paul I looked this up on Google typed in Madness + Castlebar festival and I got this; we were on the last day, the 31st CB
dear chris i discovered that my kitchen cupboards have, or at least had, woodworm. if the woodworm is still active can i treat the cupboards with something to get rid of them or do i have to replace the cupboards completely? alternatively, if the woodworm is gone, is there any anything i can use to fill in the holes with? i like the 'wood look' and would prefer to not have to paint it but the holes are rather unsightly and i don't want new worms using them to move in.
also, why aren't you playing in dublin?
Dear Cormac Are you sure it's woodworm? It may well be that someone was playing darts. I have sorted out a Dublin gig as well.I hope this is OK. CB
G'day once over, Yes - apologies for the 16 years' delay re. the Crunch gratitude...I was born 5 days after the release of 'Abbey Road' & have only just finsihed listening to Side 2. Have ordered the deluxe Liberty & the CD/DVD Liberty through your webshop, so await with baited breath & other bits. Obese congrats to you upon a magic year to date; MADNESS really is a happy religion unto itself. Hope that you had the whiskey with Bedders for me. Lunacy & good health - Alphonso.
Dear Alphonso I hav'nt seen him for a while. thanks CB
Hi Mr C. J. Foreman Hope all is good with you and the band ...? I have been reading Thommos Treehouse , and he has hinted their maybe another version of mad not mad in the pipeline is this true? or he just jesting "the rascal".
All the best and a big thank you for all the great music over past 30 years.
Dave That geezer next door he can't keep it quiet can he? It was an idea of mine. I think the original album was partly not very good. I would like to re do it with Barso on keyboards. thanks CB
Hello Chrissy Boy, How ya doing? My god you boys are skinting me this year! What with concerts and albums, But worth every penny! Was wondering if you might have considered doing a Calendar this year? As its been years since one has been available. That would be fantastic! Soooo lookin forward to December as seeing you at southend and the O2!! Yippie! xx Lisa
sorry another bedders question, but all your references about the sugababes makes me wonder whether your pointing towards a replacement will allow you to carry on? hpoe this is not the case as it always works best when its the magnificant 7. Bedders did seem slightly detached from the precedings during the concert of lonf, although having watched it 3 times already it was truly brilliant, Csrl and suggs seemed to be really enjoyoing their little clips bits too! steve
Dear Steve He has done this before you know. I have too and Barso did as well. The ol' Maddy machine kept a' riding along though. CB
Hello me again :) before i forgot to metion that my 2 brothers and 3 uncles once came to see you at manchester and they all dressed up as you, i have a picture somewhere and its ratherr funny haha :) oh and another thing which is the best song you have every done mine is lovestruck and wings of a dove :) Hannah x
Dear Hannah Best song? er...Madness is All in the Mind. Came out just the way I wrote it. CB
Hi CB 2 things I am thinking of: when I was at your gig in Berlin at the Spandauer Zitadelle they played an instrumental tune before you guys eventually went on stage to start off with OSB...is this a song of yours? I haven't hea rd it before. Maybe you can find out what it was... Second: the madness evening at BBC4 at one of the last sundays...as I do not live in the UK i was not able to watch it (neither on TV nor on the iPlayer). Is there any chance to get the video of the Glastonbury gig? I read you may re-release "Take it or Leave it" and the TLONF-show will be released on DVD soon... Best regards Michael
Dear Micheal Bedders got that song from a mad album, I can't remember the name of it now. The Glastonbury show was filmed by the BBC' so I don't think it will surface on DVD.Take it or Leave it I don't know about any planned DVD release either, but the Hackney Show is out with a new edition of the Liberty album. CB CB
At last, I had a spare £45 for your beautiful box set (freelancer not a skinflint). I retrieved it from the post office on Friday but haven't had time to give the music my undivided until this evening. Love, love, love: One Fine Day; Let's Go (only heard it live before); Fish 'N' Chips. I'm fixated on CD2. Not listened to 3 at all - yet.
So, my question for now is where did you all get your M section crests from? I imagine your boat is because you live by the sea (still envious). Or were you on Blue Peter? What about the others? I thought clicking on one might take me to a little profile page of each of you. Would be nice. :)
Dear Amanda The crests were er..supplied by the web site designers. wearefrank thanks CB
Hey Chris I just would like to take the chance to say you and the rest of Madness changed my entire thinking about music. You guys are my favorite band and great job on the last album it was great Matt

Dear Claire I found some stuff on Youtube. My Dad used to sing this one too..
chrissy, hope your ok. ive got tickets for bournemouth which will be my 49th madness gig. however was the stand ins for mike and bedders a temp measure on good morning and paul Ogrady show ? , I hope so craig
Dear Craig Sort of temporary but Bedders is staying out for a while. CB
dear CB wot I ....... idiot I am, wer did I get Madley from.. My sincere apologies, I remember rushing down the shops on da day Wonderful woz released, brilliant album, so would be nice to here some tracks from it played live on a regular basis. Disagree with Barso's piano tho, his playing is better than ever, but the sound needs to change back to how it woz in the 90's. I think he used an effect on it which made it sound clearer and better, speak to him, he might agree. Thats enough from me now, sorry to be a pain.. take care
Dear Tote We sporadically play Lovestruck, which I really like, but it gets dropped sometimes even when it is written down on my setlist... CB
glasses Question: hi bud just want to say ive been a fan since the 80s and you guys are the best...id just like to ask where can i get dark lens glasses like the ones suggs wears...Cant find a decent pair anywhere ..tryed the ones on market ..but no good mate..cheers and Thankyou for the past 30yrs... Stephen Boyd
Dear Stephen Persol glasses http://www.persol.com/UK/home.asp CB
Ok Chris It's Shannan Again With A Less Difficult Question ! I Play Electric Guitar And Only have One (Fender Squire) And I'm Thinking Of Getting A Second One...Any Good recomendations ??? Shannan xxxxxxx
Shannan Have you got loads of money or what? Just stick with one guitar until you learn how to play it. If you play live maybe you will need two. Save the money buy some strings, a tuner, a good amp and a case etc. Unless you already have.If you are like, really goood get a Gibson to really kick some ***.Totally differant sound. CB
hi there crissy boy! havnt sent you a message in a while. i went to a music festival in the summer break called 'Endorset in Dorset' it's a small festival with some great bands that are realy fun. But two of the ska bands really reminded me of you guys and was thinking you should check them out and maybe if you like them, see if they will support you for a gig. the first i saw are called 'los albertos' and do some great ska tunes. this is there myspace- http://www.myspace.com/losalbertos
then my favourite i saw was the amazing 'big red ass' this is there's-http://www.myspace.com/bigredass
i recomend you lisnt to \'suzuki\' by bif red ass- my fav one of there's. anyway i just thought i would shar that with you and everybody who reads this page. thank you very much, jack
Dear Jack I have seen Los Albertos at the Engine Room Brighton. Most entertaining. Big Red Ass ha ha very funny that Suzuki one I must say. CB

hi madness, i have a few questions, firstly you know in dut devil the word equinamous what does it mean? ive searched dictionaries and asked teachers and they dont know! also sorry if this is ignorrant wat is a matinee show? and last but not least on the dangermen sessions it says volume 1, is there a volume two or will there be? much obliged ben
Dear Ben Use Google fer cryin' out loud! I just typed in equanimous and got;
- in full control of your faculties; "the witness remained collected throughout the cross-examination"; "perfectly poised and sure of himself"; "more self-contained and more dependable than many of the early frontiersmen"; "strong and self-possessed in the face of trouble" self-collected, self-possessed, self-contained, collected, poised composed - serenely self-possessed and free from agitation especially in times of stress; "the performer seemed completely composed as she stepped onto the stage"; "I felt calm and more composed than I had in a long time"
Not like me then.
A matinee show I will try Google again; Matinée may refer to: A performance of a play that takes place in the afternoon rather than the evening. Well in our case a gig.
Dangermen sessions part two I shall see what Google says once more;
Dangermen sessions part two 'not very likely in my time'. CB
Hi It's been a long time since I've written a message to you. Hope the band is still having fun! Anyway I want to ask will the deluxe edition of Norton Folgate contain the extra tracks from the err...box set Folgate? Cheers
Dear Trilby No, it has got the Hackney show DVD. Or the other way round, the DVD has got the Norton album... CB
Hi Chris , just ordered One Step Beyond & LONF DVD releases & wanted to know if Sugar & Spice will be the original version or the recently released download version with the changed lyric? thanks from Andy
Dear Andy In the re pressing it will be the changed version. However I don't know if we have done any re pressing yet. I think so, as the artwork has changed a bit as well. There was a blank black panel on the right of the booklet [where the band photo is] in the original one, which has been filled in. CB
I'm happy because answering email INDEED CHRIS admire and I would love to come to MEXICO, LIVE IN SAN LUIS POTOSI WE LIKE YOUR MUSIC A LOT. SKA MUSIC HAS HEARD OF MEXICO, THE VERSION OF OUR HOUSE BAND MADE BY THE INSPECTOR, YOU THINK ABOUT THE VERSION. FIRES ARE YOUR FRIEND ERIKA
Hi Chriss Lou here, again! (don't you get sick of the same old people, like me for instance, writing to you again and again?! No? Good!) Okay, so I've heard (you told me in person and from other sources) that you're having a big load of building work done and that you are either building, or renovating, a huge mansion (yes, that's what i heard it was), in Hove (actually) and it includes a swimming pool, we think, (Jackie from Dover on Madness Central spoke to a man who knows you and does something with swimming pools) which is lovely. So, I've decided that you must be absolutely loaded now, probably, and that we (the Madness fans who have bought the box sets, and the Madstock wristbands, and the USB sticks and the tickets to Southend and Brighton and the O2 and Paris) must have helped you get to the lovely financial position that you are now currently in, and we are very very glad to have helped you get there and don't begrudge it one bit, because we love you, and because of "all the joy you bring" us.But it does lead me to the conclusion that this must mean that we are each probably entitled, therefore, to come and stay in your lovely new mansion with you, say, for a couple of days each a year (like a sort of timeshare thingy) and my reason for writing to you this evening is to ask you if I can therefore please book Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2009? If you could get back to me soon with confirmation of this I'd be very grateful. Thanks CB!
Love Lou xx x
dear Lou I made most of my millions by selling my soul, or rather 'Our House' for use in various adverts. So I should really have the lovely people from Maxwell House USA over before you. Also, it is very true from live shows. However the box set you mentioned and in fact the Norton album was all financed by ourselves from our gig money and has not quite broken even yet - but it is doing very well. Yeah right millions ha - ha...I wish. The pool gets done next year...Maybe. I will sack them for blabbing for a start off and do it myself. thanks CB
Hey CB how about bringing back top of the pops for a special show for u guys. U can showcase norton folgate as well as the old stuff, maybe also have some special guests make an appearence, such as Jerry and Rhona. Early December would be good, that would nicely promote your xmas tour. Just a thought.. take care
Dear Tote OK - I'll just ring the BBC.I'm sure they'll be up for it... CB
Hey Chrissy Boy. First of all can I say congratulations on you 30th anniversary and thanks for everything you and the guys have done over the last 30 years. My question is, as Dad's desk tracks are being made available for download in the M section is there any chance the covers with the tracks can be included in the download??
Dear Stav That's a good point. Probably not. Can't you just grab them and paste them. Not too hard surely. CB
I have just booked my ticket for your matinee show in Newcastle.
I am looking forward to seeing you perform again, and I am wondering if Madness will be performing any material from disc 2 from the Norton Folgate box set ?
Either way, I am chuffed to see the band play on your 30th anniversary and I congratulate you all on your achievements.
Another thing, if I may please, Chris. I do not drink that much these days, and I now have a rule not to drink alcohol before 2pm if I am out on the razzle early. What time will Madness be on stage ? Dell
Dear Dell Matinee? You are too young to drink -surely? Something from the box set is pushing the envelope, nay - ripping it up, but I'd love to do Hunchback of Torriano CB
Dear Chrissy Boy, general consensus amongst the maddie community is that either Forever Young or On the the Town should be released:howzabout both as a double a-side with extra trimmings?Further more,I presume the b-sides of NW5 & Dust Devil were part of the Dangermen sessions, anymore in the vaults.& one more thing,I collared Monsiuer Barso at Madstock & enquired if you had any inclination to record Sunshine boys.Saw it on Take it or leave it dvd a while back & it blew me away.lots of love a voracious nutty boy rudy coudy
Dear Rudy Forever Young gets my vote. Sunhsine VOICE never got finished. CB
Hiya Chris Please, please, please can you reassure me that the departure of Monsieur Barso and Bedders isnt going to be followed by you splitting up as happened before when Mike left the band. Ive gone into a major panic -- No kidding. Can you also tell Carl I loved his statement from the Norton Folgate programme about not taking sweet honey from a sharp knife. Very Very profound. Thanks Caz
Dear Caz There are more important things to worry about, you know. it'll all come out in the wash CB
Hi Chrissie boy, thought the Folgate video on bbc4 last week was just brill with all the theatricals and with commentry in a most dark and victorian manner .Will there be any chance next year of you boys putting on a theater setting again Folgate style ? Cheers Wozza...
Hi bud hows you just a few questions for you now that I hear you are playing Edinburgh at new year can I pleeaassee get on the guest list for the gig ( I think I deserve to as it was my idea for you to play there in the first place cos I have emailed you asking to do so hundreds of times, well at least three he he and I know it will be near impossible to get a ticket unless you are a vip ) can youn also tell me what the situation is with the matinee shows cos my boys are 12 and 8 years old and want to go but can adults accompany them as I am not to sure bout them going on their own and finaly whats the story with the showtime shoutout at gigs cos I cant remember it from the early days but it seems a big part of the shows now so when did it start and how did it come about ( I was really peed of when thet cut it from the glastonbury set on bbc4 ) cheers Terry b fae kirkcaldy
Dear Terry Guest list? Ha! The matinees were supposed to be just for kids, then of course the kids have to be accompanied and I imagine there will be some trouble with health and safety and so on but hopefully they should be OK, as long as you don't stick them right up the front.
The Showtime thing..oh dearie me. What happened was, we did a gig last year and I was a bit 'refreshed'. I looked at the set list and something occurred to me which was related to the Matrix film. We went to see the first one in New York in 1999 and there was this guy sitting in front of us with his girlfriend and he was quite excited and animated. [us being Suggs, Chas, Thommo and me]During the scene when they ask for 'guns lots of guns'
this bloke was rubbing his hands with glee and anticipation and he turned to his date and said quite matter of fact, calmly, with no shouting, 'showtime'. Meaning some a** was about to be quite righteously kicked. Which of course it was, he was totally right. So back to the gig, I thought this is the last part of the set here, it's all killer, no filler, all thriller, just House of Fun, Wings of a Dove..er...and ..er.. what's some of all the other big hits what we have had? Baggy Trousers etc..in other words......SHOWTIME!!!! Suggs always makes me do it and the brass boys seem to be quite amused by it. I ask Suggs not to give me the mike but he always does. thanks CB PS I think the gig where I had this epiphany was the O2 in 2008.
Young man, g'day.... Will the DVD/CD of the album be released in the land of Oz, or is it easier to order firectly from the Madshop? A belated thankyou by 16 years for a message you sent with an order I made for Crunch merchandise; 'Don't Worry, I'm A Policeman' is 1 of the most fabu titles of all time. All the best for the remainder of 2009; please share a whiskey with Bedders for me. Alphonso.
Dear Alphonso I don't know about the DVD. You waited all this time? I am deeply....er...moved. thanks CB
Hi Chris, There is mention of a Mrs Hutchinson in "Idiot Child" and on the "7" album, is she someone who exists as she's been mentioned twice, also do you all know that TLONF is the first "Madness" album not too have you all appear on the album cover (I know "The Madness" didn't have any faces on the album cover and also any compelation albums), thorougly enjoyed the Madness night on BBC3, it was good to see "take it or leave it again" after last seeing it on video in about 1983 and the concert was a breath of fresh air, very entertaining.
All the best mate.
Dear Pants It's Mikes Mum. Not her real name, of course. CB
hi chrissy boy i am going to your consert in manchester and i would like to know if you are playing any of your fabulous amazing new album LONF? hope so because i think you are FANTASTIC.i also love your old songs espeshally MY GIRL.I ABSALUTLEY LOVE MADNESS your the best band in my life love izzy aged 9 years xoxoxo
Dear Izzy Hopefully some of the album will get an airing. CB
Hey hey Commander. Hope you're well. Great gig at regent street by the way. Did you get a flyer for Total Madness? I tried to give Suggs one but he wasn't having any of it. Our dedication to the flyering cause ended up with me walking into a lamppost on the Chal Farm Road. But anyway... Heres a truly inspirational idea for the deluxe cd/dvd reissue of Folgate - how about the CD is done like a Blue Plaque? Then the writing on the CD - Madness - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate 2009 etc - could be like the writing on the plaques. Just thought it might work, as its about London history and the rest. Just thought I'd suggest it. See you at Swindon dude - fancy a bevvy beforehand? Regards Owen The Nutter PS That'll be fifty quid.
Dear Owen I have had an idea for it - which will cost a bit less. sorry CB
Chris, Great News, Looks like I will come along for the afternoon session. Does this mean its a toned down version with no school uniform and fizzy pop? Anyway, enough of the rambling!!! Cant wait, excellent news. This tour manager is making you work too hard.... I assume it is not LC this time... Garry
Why is it when i watch a Madness vid. Lees always the one in a dress, mind the clip of him in a tutu is just classic.
I don't know. I tried it once for Sun and the Rain.I just remembered this. It was supposed to be one of those weather cuckoo clocks that exist in my imagination where a woman comes out of one side when it's sunny and when it rains a man comes out the other side and chases her with an axe or some weird stuff. I had a wig with pigtails and really nice little gingham dress on. I wasn't as funny as Thommo really, so we didn't use it. CB
WAS ABOUT TO ASK IF Take It Or Leave It WAS AVAILABLE ON dvd BUT SEE THE ASNWER FOR Amanda xx.
i WATCHED TLONF 3 TIMES AND HAVE THE CD. lOVED THE MUSIC HALL SETTING. GENIUS PURE CLASS
THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT SOUNDS
HOPE TO SEE YA ALL AT EDINBURGH HOGMANY SHOW
THE ONLY GOOD REASON TO BE OUT AND ABOUT IN THAT DREICH PLACE WOULD BE TO SEE YOU GUYS. Andy
Dear Andy Dreich place? What the hell that is? [looks it up finds; dreich (dre·ech) Dialect, chiefly Scot -adj. 1. (intr.) drab. 2. (tr.) dreary (referring to weather or a sermon). 3. often leads to a state of being drookit; grey.
How dare you! Barso was born in Edinburgh! [Ponders a while...]Says it all really.. thanks CB
Well, im abit nervous. Heh. =D Erm, i hope that one just one day that madness will be playing in Singapore, cause there's a lot of people who is a big fan of Madness, and i mean seriously. Hehe. Btw, hello! I know this is a bit weird but heh, Hie again. -A.c
hey CB noticed your numerous and humerous replies on the no show of mark bedford its got me thinking. When people say to youngsters etc hes gone away for a bit or hes having time off where im from it means hes gone inside.Surely its a conspiracy CB Mark the quiet steady one Bedford is spending time in the nick.Oh the shame lol martin
Dear Martin Not quite. He is far too clever for that.We are using the Sugarbabes principle.... CB
hi there to all you nutty boys...iam 44 yrs old and been a fan from day one...loved every thing you have ever done, my question to you cb..i saw you in bristol colsten hall many moons ago and me and 3 pals met you all before the gig and had fotos and you let us stay for the sound check kix even signed a fag for me lol it was the best gig ever but do you know what year it was (very early eighties) cuz i cant remember? we had our fotos taken with you all with a big picture of the album cover madness 7..the guy said the pics were going to japan me and pals all dressed in rude girl gear..just wish we had saw the pics..my son now loves you all to so i want to tell him wot year it was hope you can thank you from a nutty girl fan lea xxxxx
Dear Lea Bristol Colston Hall was October 15th 1981. . There is a bit on this site at the top that says 'about', which is a timeline [I must change the name of it.] Sorry I don't have the photos. CB
Hi chris, this could sound grumpy and i am Looking forward to all the forthcoming reissues but who decided on the bonus tracks? I cant help but think that there was room for all the dance craze tracks for example... Dont quote me on that 12" version... And more radio stuff. Perhaps a rarities box set is in order? Roll on christmas! Joe
Dear Joe We don't own the Dance Craze stuff, the what? the 12" Don't Quote me...was it any different? CB
Not sure what it is about Nutty Boys music, but other than kiddie stuff, it's all my 4yr old will listen to. She requests TLONF in the car - can't get enough of it. Thanks! Brian
Dear Brian I have to say this is not really the demographic we were aiming for, but very nice to know and far better for her than the Tweenies,X Factor or some such vapid rubbish stuff. My kids got New York Dolls, The Arctic Monkeys and some old reggae [The Paragons]last week. This week it's my turn, so some classic Hear'Say, Jason Donovan and Sinitta. CB
Hey Chris I'm using the work pc to let you know that I'm loving the new Total Madness Compilation at full volume. The people in the Animal shop next door however... ;) mike
Dear Mike great great..yes yes..what are they playing in the shop next door? I'd love to know? Doves? Atomic Rooster? Budgie? Fish? The Crickets? The Byrds? The Beatles? The Eagles? A Flock of Seagulls? The Turtles? Eels? Seal? Def Leppard? Atomic Kitten? Super Furry Animals? Gorillaz? The Monkees? do tell...CB
I did think about swimming to Amsterdam and asking him myself but sense prevailed - do you know what keyboards Mr B is using at the moment in that famous rig of his? If he is feeling in particularly benevolent mood he may even give me some clues on the tones he is using before pushing buttons to try to replicate the sounds on my Korgs drives me completely nutty. Steve Todd
Dear Steve I think it's all samples these days. Very complicated stuff. CB
Hi Chrissy boy, a few years back I received the Madness Cd single box set vol-1 which was absolutely brilliant, do you know if vol-2 is ever going to come out?? p.s. looking forward to seeing you all at the Brighton Centre on 02/12/09 sad to say only my first time though. Chris Short
Dear Chris I really don't think its likely at the moment. First time? hopefully not the last all the best CB
hello mate i have got all your albums but i cant get the cd for your our house musical any ideas sam
Dear Sam Here we go. Hold tight. Go to a page called Google. Type in Madness Our House Musical http://www.amazon.co.uk/Our-House-Musical-Story-Madness/dp/B0002W0Z5Q took me 0.20 secs....sorry took Google 0.20 secs only £4.98 CB
Hiya Chris Are Bedders and Monsieur Barso coming back for the xmas tour or at some point in the future? After watching Young Guns go for It on Friday on BBC4 the previous departure of Mike Barson was followed by Madness splitting up. I have gone into a SERIOUS panic now that this may happen again. Please, please dont say that this is on the cards especially after Norton Folgates acclaim and success. Thanks Caz
Dear Caz It is impossible to leave this band; I have tried a few times. It's like the Foreign Legion...Don't panic, think of the Sugarbabes they'll still carry on. CB
Amanda...I have Take it or leave it recorded on to my HDD machine, I would happily record it to a blank disc for you & send it by post I have loads of spare blank discs...just let me know how ! Helen Harvey-Bennett
Dear Helen This is tantamount to bootlegging..I'll tell Lily Allen. CB
Hi again Chrissy, Sorry to email so soon (twice in a week?, I'm not a stalker -honest!)
In your August posts there was one from Mandy who wanted to know if she could get pictures of the Romsey gig. As I was at the front, I got quite a few good shots (even a smiley one of you with "Snugs"), I don't mind emailing some to her if she still wants them, but don't really want to publish my email address on here (I don't want a stalker either !). If she should contact you through this, would you mind passing my email address to her, or hers to me? I'll try not to email you again for at least a week.... or at least a few days... maybe !
Ps Should I have sent this via (who seems to be) your new secretary Graham Y ?!
Dear Sharon What is this? Friends re united? So I act as a go between for you. Then you both get MY email address and then I stalk you both? CB
Hi CB Thanks for your kind words about my Dad passing away. I used to laugh when he called Suggs Stuggs. The site selling the seated tickets at rip off prices is get me in, a ticketmaster company, check it out and you will see what I mean. I was wrong about some tickets being 190 per ticket it was 186.99 per ticket I've just checked, there are other tickets cheaper than that, but all are way above face value.
Thank again CB
Dear Anthony That getmein is a sort of portal for ticket touts, by the look of it. Do it directly through our site, or go to the official ticketmaster site. A lot of the shows have sold out though, hence the inflated prices on getminandtuckemup. CB
Dear CB, Thanks for the brief chat b4 Reg.St.. Walking round & round in the city for 4hrs was worth it !.. I know we said 2 go via the forum for Swindon for the 7th Dec..so tks again. I also gave my details to Thommo - but said he'd most prob. lose it. I've got a performance lined up @ a Posh Hotel Wedding soon so i'll put that on You-Tube when done ..& send the link. Will get a few Corona's down me for luck ! B'day wishes to all in Oct .. Cheers Rags
For a fathers days pressie my wife got us some picks(stuck too a picture of One Step Beyond) that were signed by the band but no Lee would ya know why (that's if ya know what i'm on about?). As it's a pic of One step beyond a copy of Smashes signature don't really fit , if ya get my drift. Blinding new album by the way hope to see you guys at Xmas all the best Alan.

please give uo your opinion. Alan
Dear alan I don't know where she got it from. Thommo is often not around and sometimes he can tell the person asking for autographs is going to sell them on e bay, so he blanks them. Unless they agree to cut him in, of course.Interesting set list thanks CB
Hi Chrissy boy. I am a big madness fan and am organising a charity auction for our companies staff awards evening in February 2010. Is there any chance i can get a signed photograph of the band to auction off on the night for our designated charity or do you have any ideas how i can get hold of one. Hope you can help. Looking forward to seeing you guys at manchester apollo in December. john blane
Hi Chris, Long time fan - I won a copy of "It Must Be Love" when you and Lee were on LBC in 1981! I still think the b side was better. (honest, not just cos u wrote it!) Also lucky enough to have my copy of of MAD NOT MAD signed by all six of you ( as it was at the time) at Virgin Megastores on Sep 30 1985....A very underatted album, particuarly "Coldest Day". My question is....Has Lee ever asked Mark to collaberate on one of his songs - because I think that a (Thompson/Bedford) song would be great.... Also a (Mcpherson/Woodgate) song has never materialised...Is this just one of those things?...And also, what track (non single) that you wrote or co wrote do you think is your best?
Dear Clive Those collaborations could still happen yet. The way it works is someone has a tune and gives it to the mainly lyrical ones [Suggs Chas and Thommo] and this also works the other way round. My current favourite tune is 'One Fine Day' from the box set. CB
Can you tell me anywhere I can find the original to Rockin' in A Flat (the only song I have ever 'sung' in front of an audience and failed miserably as I'd been drinking all day after passing out of the Royal Artillery back in the dark ages) I have found all the others that you did and they grace my iPod but never this one. Cheers Mike
PS see you in Bournemouth for the Christmas tour (I'll be the one in the Madness t shirt)
Dear Mike Our version is on an album called 'One Step Beyond'. The original is by Bazooka Joe. You should be easy to spot, unless out merchandisers pull their fingers out. CB
Saw you guys at glasters, im 39 and i cried. God the emotion. bar for that. just watched the BBC4 doc. there some great tunes and dancing at about 50 mins.. whats the tune called as the two dancing guys are nutting each other,
all the best...neil
Dear Neil You big softie. It was Chalky and Si Birdsall I think. CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, So glad to know you are releasing the liberty of norton folgate on DVD.It is a brilliant film you guys looked to be enjoying every minute of the show,i certainly enjoyed the film.i own the3 usb concerts it was great to see the live perfomance of the show from a truely wonderful band.MADNESS,MADNESS,OLE OLE OLE,MADNESS. Cheers Andy Coulter.
Dear Andy It will be on sale with a free copy of the album thrown in. I didn't know you spoke Spanish. CB
Hi just saw the re run of the paul o grady show..How funny was jo brand..suggs was sat nxt to her and he sat right back..You and woody were laughing at her stories..I do like jo brand think shes really funny and a lovely person...Strange why u allways have to mime but we still enjoy seeing you..If i was there id be dancing in the aisle...Nice to see you though.Hx
She is funny isn't she? So is Paul O Grady in the ad breaks he was telling us some class stories about his false nails back in the day, for example. We could easily play live except they are not really set up for it on that sort of show. CB
The Liberty of Norton Folgate on TV Question: Saw your old stiff film last nite took me back!!!and then Liberty gig...wow you guys really blew me away... that really rocked love to see a band of my era getting new stuff out there.....beware the yellow honey on the end of a knife etc...gertchhheuuurghhhh gonna come c u live now ...brill michelle
Dear Michelle It's the Marmite that gets me then it goes on the butter - oh what a mess. CB
Hello Chrissy Boy - just atching the BBC4 stuff that I sky+'d. The Hackney Empire gig is fabulous. I've been a fan since about 1992 (Divine Madness got me!) and hopefully I'll try and make it to one of your gigs this year. Keep on keeping on, you lot are my heroes! And Carl is still fit fit fit!! Sally Clarke
Hi CB just a couple of questions on your live sets. First of all, would like to know why the band opt not to play any tracks from Madley, which is one of your best albums ever, songs like like saturday nite-sunday morning and my communicator, which are both brill, would slot in very well in your current set. I was a little disappointed at madstock 09 that neither of these were played. Also, it's been noticed of late (glasto/victoria/i.o.w/regent st gigs) that the sound on Barso's keyboards has changed, the piano sounds a bit too flat at times, like its not load enough, especially on the solo parts. This is in contrast to the live performances in the 90's, where the piano had a different sound and stood out much more, therefore, in my view, sounded alot better. This is notable on the madstock 92 cd, listen how clear the piano sounds and maybe please ave a word with Mike, he needs to revert back to that sound, i think u might agree..Sorry to nag, but life long fan.. take care Tote
Dear Tote [again! give someone else a chance!] Madley? do you mean Wonderful? Good point though. I really like Lovestruck and it's often on the setl ist I get all geared up for it and -gone!Mike's piano it depends where you are though. It usually sounds pretty loud and clear to me. CB
Hi, just want to say thanks for the best gig ever. I have followed Madness for 30 years, I have all the albums, singles, CD's, videos etc. Unfortunately I have been unable to see the band as I have been out of the country for 20 years, so it was great to be one of the select few that was in front of the stage. You guys are as good live as you are on vinyl!! Brilliant and after that I will definitely be getting tickets for the gigs in December. Once again thanks Simon Martin
hi ya again CB just would like to say that after watching the Take It film for the 1st time on friday night, not only I thought it woz pretty good, but it shows how tough it woz for the band in those very early days. Also, it confirms that the core of the band woz your good self, mighty Barso and Thommo, and to this day, I think that still stands, tho Suggsey and Chas are terrific musicians and great frontmen. It does also show how fundamental Woody's drums and Marks bass are to the bands overall sound, both of them quite unique players and maybe slightly unsung heroes. By the way, my 16 year old daughter, who is normally either on her phone or in fronty of the mirror in her bedroom, did not leave the sofa the other night and watched the complete madness night on bbc4. Now she is nagging me for some tickets for december, tho she came with us and already seen you three times in the last year, at this rate, I am going to have to remortgage the house. ha stay cool Tote
Ive been a huge fan of madness since i was a little girl and my big brother used to get me to sit listening to baggy trousers over and over till i had the lyrics witten out then we would sing it back (wasnt really a barbie sort of girl lol) So was pretty chuffed when i back from the pub last night to find take it or leave it on the tele sky +sd The Liberty of Norton Falgate supposed to be working but watching it now. Amazing to watch how it all began and how fantastic you all still are today :) cant wait till dec 1st when im coming to watch you all in Bournmouth.
Love you all as much today as i did when i was little.
Hi Chris! Hope all is going well. I have listened to Norton Folgate so much lately, I think its easily one of the greatest Madness albums. Im watching BBC4 right now, the Hackney show looked amazing. Its so great to see you being appreciated as the geniuses that you are. I live in southend but couldnt get tickets for december... yes I'm gutted!! I have a quick question for you if I may? Are there any live recordings or unreleased songs by The Madness? I have the CD, &" box set, and some demo's i found on MIS but did read somewhere years ago that there were more songs recorded after the first CD and the demos were issued on cassette? Also I heard a rumour TM played the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh, although I was only 11 then so wouldnt have got in! Anything you can tell me about that period would be awesome! Do the band think highly of the album? I hope they do, I really think it has some fantastic songs on it. Keep making great music!!!!! :o) Paul
Dear Paul THE Madness never played live. There might be few bits and pieces knocking around but they are only demos of the songs that ended uo on the The Madness album. I will dig them out for the re release. thanks CB
On Sat night/Sun morning I was working on one of my several jobs as an AQA researcher. (Any Question Answered - text us on 63336. Wisdom costs 95p; wit thrown in for free.)
Apart from the usual 'What clubs are open till 4am?' and 'Where can I get a night bus from A to home?' I suddenly had this:
'How was the biggest band in the 80s fan based?'
What did they mean?! I was more than a little miffed off that I had to pass. What would you have answered? Bear in mind you can't be rude - unless someone's asking multiple questions on the same subject.
Dear Amanda You...again! What sort of divvy question is that? I thought I had some daft ones.I think maybe it was : Which band in the 80's had the biggest fan base? We had 35,000 on ours but probably Duran Duran had more. CB
WOW is all I can say about TLONF. The concert itself was spectacular enough but the film is a masterpiece. Congrats!
One of my quiz friends was also enthusing about it tonight. I enthused more and let slip my impression of the black-toothed Cockney hag who accosted me in the Empire foyer, demanding to check my bag for bottles of gin. The music hall idea was touch of genius. It was so beautiful!
Back to the point: said friend loved the BBC4 night but his wife accidentally taped over Take It Or Leave It (which he's never seen before) before he could watch it. I can't transfer it from my BT Vision box to a DVD - is that even legal? So my very long-winded question is, are there any plans to re-release Take It Or Leave It? I wouldn't mind a real copy myself.
Dear Amanda It was on again on Sunday. It will probably be on again as it's the BBC you now they love a repeat. Otherwise hopefully some time next year it will come out again. thanks CB
WEDDING DAY WISHES?? Question: Hi, Do you think the band could send my fiance and me wedding day congratulations for our wedding on sunday 11th october, it is also my 40th birthday on the same day ,we love you guys and your music we will be playing it must be love in the ceremony !!! (your version)., anyway it would be so awesome especially for mark as he has been a skinhead for ever still is! I can send our address ... PS Gatcombe park was amazing! elaine
Dear Elaine and Mark I wish you all the very best. love Chrissy Boy
Hi..like many others I watched the Madness marathon on Friday evening..thoroughly enjoyed it....loved the glastonbury stuff & laughed all the way through take it or leave it at how young you all were ( me too then ! )I follow you everywhere, ( shame you decided not to come to Cardiff again this yr (we are a capital city ???) but will drive up the M4 once again to enjoy the xmas gig instead ...I was also at Madstock this yr...you are excellent entertainers & timeless xx helen
dear Helen Thanks for all the support Cardiff - next time! CB
Just a line to say how much my wife and I appreciate what you and the band have done this year. I always liked Madness as a teen but to have become a fan at 42 says so much about the new work you have produced. Even my kids (9 and 13) have become fans and love the Liberty album. My question is, how long do you feel you can continue in this vein and is there yet more sensational albums in you? Simon 'Spark' Parkinson
Dear Simon I would like to think there is. thanks CB
Hi CB Been trying to get 2 good seated tickets in the lower tier at the O2, as yet they are not on sale with ticketmaster, but I have found a couple of sites selling them at 2 or 3 times there price, one site even selling tickets for 190 per ticket. How do they get hold of these tickets and why are they allowed to rip off loyal fans? The reason why I'm looking for seated tickets is after 30 years of standing and getting beer chucked over me by idiots, I'm getting fed up with that and getting to old for beer drenched clothes.
Here's hoping I can some tickets, and then I will be looking forward to another great night at the O2 with Madness the greatest band on earth. Oh by the way on a sad note my Father passed away suddenly on the 5th july 09, he always used say to me the singer of Madness whats his name Stuggs was on TV last night.
All the best Chrissy Boy
Dear Anthony I'm sorry to hear about you Dad. Fancy calling Suggs Stugss eh? I call him Snugs myself. I just looked for tickets - it's usually the standing ones that go first. Wha!!!!!..what a rip off joke the booking fee is! How much does it cost to post two tickets? I would go down there in person myself. Depends of course where you live I suppose.
i forgot to say in my last message that my dad has a right vile team photo with ted as manager and its from 1973 and he had a dodgy hair cut and and flairs,i will scan it and send it to you ,cheers regards spencer
Dear Sepnce You must do this, I will send it to Bedders. Send it to firstname.lastname@example.org CB
Hi Chris, Just wondered if you and the rest of the band get fed up with the lack of respect for the songwriting and production of your songs over the years from the press and peers. Personally I feel the band should definitly get a Lifetime achievement award for contribution to the music industry, interested in your thoughts all the best Steve
Steve Every single day of my life.I have got two Ivor Novellos, that will do and the gold discs which are a concrete sign of my humble achievements They can stick the rest... CB
URGENT !!!!! Young Chris , Firstly thank you , Karl and Alyssa had a great time and people couldn't belive that Alyssa (4)knows all the words to your songs . Secondly a friend just emailed me to say the new ONE STEP BEYOND has been put on a PIRATE music site ! How can this be ! Barry Allen
Dear Barry Gosh darndagnabbit it I'll run em up the yard arm. Walk the plank with a yo ho ho... thanks CB
Hi, I am glad to see all of you on the tv again at glastonbury. The concert was brilliant, Brings back a lot of memories. I am 46 now and have followed you since my girl hit the charts in 1980! I will be going to the Edinburgh gig at hogamany, Can't wait. Robert Kerr, Dunfermline.
Hi there just wanted to say I think the new album is fantastic. I have been a fan since I was 14 years old (now 43) and I think it is one of the best things you’ve ever done. Also thanks for being one of the most genuine lovely bunch of people. My sister and I used to follow you guys around London and would always wait outside the venue to meet you after the show. All of the band were always really lovely and would have chats with us, we must have been right pains. One of our highlights was the gig you did for Gary Crowley on the Thames because we got to see you play so close up and Woody ponced fags of us. I saw you play at Glastonbury this year with my 17 year old son, who also loves Madness. It felt really special. Cheers Nutty Boys. Sarah Montagu
thanks Sharon, Woody has now given up smoking. It was getting too exspensive. CB
Thursday November 19th 1981 (I was 19). My two friends Chris, Ruth and I made our way upto Hammersmith from work, as we walked into the venue we were amazed to see that we could get right upto the front of the stage,(we'd only been to seated venues before). We pushed our way through the crowd and managed to secure a spot leaning on the left hand side of the stage, back in those days there was no gap between the audience and the stage. When Madness came on we were very excited to realise that Chas and Suggs were right in front of us, at one point I got so excited I grabbed Chas's foot and nearly tripped him over ! (sorry Chas). The crowd was getting so boisterous by this stage that Ruth was getting a bit claustraphobic so had to watch the rest of the concert at the back on her own. Friend or no friend there was no way Chris and I were leaving our prized spot, so we hung onto the stage for dear life (or in my case Chas's foot !). Then Suggs announced that he was going to sing your new single "It Must Be Love", strangely Chris and I seemed to know the words so were singing along when Suggs noticed and held the mike down to us during the chorus !!! (we realised later that we knew the words as my Mum was a Labi Siffre fan). At the end of the concert a lot of the audience had thrown their hats onto the stage, Chas grabbed a couple and gave them to Chris and I, I've still got mine !. My diary entry for that day says "Saw Madness at Hammersmith Palais - Bloody Brilliant !!! - We were right at the front, Chas and Suggs were really close, not even a foot away. It's the best night of this year !!"
Fast forward to Sandown 2008. This time Ruth and I got to the front of the barriers on the right side of the stage, in front of you and Lee (standing next to the two Baggy Trousers blokes who always dress in Cairo gear). Your'e doing "It must be Love" again and I'm yelling at Suggs telling him I love him (I do tend to get a bit excited at your concerts !) and calling him over so I can take a picture, when he does I start blowing him kisses and he makes a rude gesture towards me with a leary old man face, and then slaps himself on the hand (look at the Sandown clip on youtube), I was very excited that he singled me out again 27 years later (obviously it was just coincidence) but it made my evening! I'm still friends with Ruth and Chris all these years later and Ruth and I still go to your concerts. We've seen you on all the tours starting with Hammersmith Odeon on 24th Dec 1980 (though we did miss the '85 tour for some reason !). Although we now both live very different lives and no longer live near to each other we still make sure to get together for every Madness concert. You have bought us a lot of good memories over the years, thanks for them, I hope you all are enjoying it as much as us fans do and that you continue to do it for a long time yet !. Though also being a big Beatles fan too, this year has been very expensive !! See you at Brighton and the O2, promise I won't be grabbing anyones leg ! Sharon x
Dear Sharon Very nice indeed I liked it going to the present day. Now who else was at this gig and what can they recall? Becuase I tell you what, I can never remember playing at the Hammersmith Palais, only the Odeon. thanks CB CB
Hi Chris, Any chance this program is going to be put in the M section. I don't have BBC4, as I think a lot of the international fans don't have, but we would love to watch the documentary. This would be a good place to see it. Or would there be copyright issues... Take care. Andre
Dear Andre Sorry but it is BBC property and they are very hot on that - but I will ask. CB
right words at the wrong time, wrong words at the right time
hi chris hope you are well. ive just been listening to elvis presley sing are you lonesome tonight.on hearing the laughing version where he puts the words"do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" instead of "do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there".obviosly he and the band were fooling around and playing with words on a tour bus i just wondered if you and the band had ever done this with madness lyrics to pass the time away whilst travelling and if so what did you change
Dear Chigs Not really Suggs and Chas are far too professional... CB
any plans for madstock at victoria park coming out on dvd forgot 2 ask earlier what a day that was i was in the golden circle and loved every minute of it roll on the next thirty years guys status quo can do it lol
Dear James One of these days. It's taken over a year for the Hackney one to surface, so we live in hope... CB
At age of 9, Gray moved with his family to Wales. He began to broaden his musical palette by listening to punk, reggae and ska. One of his all-time favorites from childhood is the British band Madness. "They were my first sort of obsession," says Gray. "I was the ultimate fan. Soon as a single came out I'd buy it. I wanted them to go to No. 1." Pretty cool, eh? Best regards Steve
Dear Stevey Baby Yes this is fantastic, always good to inspire someone. CB
i watched the show and was curious that bedders and barson were different people were they busy or have they been replaced.been a big fan since early 80s first seen the band at glasgow apollo in 82 or 83 been 2 london and blackpool this year and got tickets for glasgow and belfast am taking my daughter again who is a big fan she has been 2 the gigs since she was 5 and would make her day if she could meet the guys after one of the gigs james stewart
Dear James Yes - they have been replaced. We are using the Sugarbabes process.Who will be next to go? Thanks for coming to all those gigs, mucch appreciated but I'm sorry I can't promise any back stage access - as who know who will be there? CB
I can't believe it's 30 years since I saw you guys on TOTP playing The Prince. I've never missed a gig you've done in Newcastle and am so looking forward to Dec. 12th. The Madness gig is a tradition with me and my pal. Just one thing though........after all these years Woody never waves at me and I think that after 30 years it's about time he did!! He just gets better with age - it's a long standing crush!!! See you in "THE TOON" in December x lindsay t
Dear Lindsay thanks for all the support - Woody never waves at me either.Stay near the back to avoid the crush. CB
Chrissy, Just watched the best fridays nights entertainment ever!!!!!! all I can say is Thanks to you and the guys it just blew me away, watching Take It Or Leave It just brought back memories of watching you at the Dublin Castle, many thanks Madness you are simply the BEST. Dean Allsop
Hi Chris, Glued to telly last night and really enjoyed the programmes on BBC4. Also caught you on the Paul O'Grady show - just wondered is it my eyesight or was that definitley not Bedders and Mike in the lineup? Are they going to be in the December tour? Hope to see them.
Cheers John P
Dear John You are correct. As far as I know, Bedders is having some time off, Mike will be there. CB
I saw this on BBC4 last night and I've been playing it on iplayer all day. The ebullience of Whitman, the vision of Blake and the profundity of the Book of the Dead. Ahem. In short, genius.Well done. Tom
Hi CB, Just a very heart felt thanks for the December 2009 tour as My brother myself and my 2 kids are going see you all in Birmingham, and as a thanks if you and the guys get chance and would like a drink please feel welcome to drop in at a wine bar I have opened with a few friends in Derby, (address on request) You will all be most welcome, I have been a fan from the start and my first gig was back in 1980 and followed you ever since, thanks to you and guys for many years of fun and great great music. the first rounds on me mate ... :-) Karl
Dear Karl thanks but I don't really drink wine much - well a bit.... CB
Hi CB, Unfortunately wasn't lucky enough to get to Regent Street last week but having just watched part of the video stream it seems that Mark wasn't there either... what was his excuse? Looking forward to the Dec 1 gig at Bournemouth. Nat x
Dear Nat Mark just needs some time off really. Like a few of us. CB
Hiya Chris,I was watching the Madness night on BBC4 which I thought was fantastic and wanted to know is The Liberty Of Norton Folgate going to be coming out on DVD.I know I could have recorded it at the time but if its coming out on DVD there might be a few extras on it,like a Chrissy boy behind the scenes filming or even out takes of Suggs and Chas's bits that they done(if there are any). One more thing did your management get the rough drawings I done of Madness jewellery. Big kiss Jane.x
Dear Jane It will be out soon with a copy of the album thrown in free. Sort of. Pictures? I will ask. CB
Hi stayed up all night to watch bbc4..It was Great to watch you all..I love it when you are all joking about and having a laugh...Laughter and happines is my thing and its great to see some mucking about on stage.Helenx
Hi Chris, Just a quick thanks for the tickets for the gig at the Cardiff international arena gig a few years back (in 2002?). You and the lads sent my sister 4 tickets for the gig after she told you we missed the last 10 mins of the original madstock gig. Ever since, whenever we and our kid sister (the CIA was her first ever gig- and now both sisters are fans too!) get the chance we come to a gig. Cheers again. Eric

thanks Shannan- so you asked him then? Best thing sometimes when you have a worry. CB
We have all been religously watching Madness on BBC4 tonight. My three month old son has not been able to take his eyes off the TV. I think he's hooked. Could he be your youngest fan and if so, do you think we should take him to your gig at the O2 in December?
Please advise as I don't want to let the little chap down
He is the youngest I have heard of - I think, but a bit too young for the O2 if you ask me. CB
Just wanted to say I was disapointed to find there was a two tier arrangment for viewing at the gig...we got there early to get a good view to find we could get no where near the stage due to it being fenced off for 'privelidged viewing' I am unable to stand for long periods after a bad bike accident and so ended up way back where I could see little, I would also like to point out that we travelled fron Ashford Kent on the train and even although we left before your encore we only made the last train by about two minutes! Maybee the gig should have finished a little earlier? I am sure other people would have had similar problems. Moaning aside...the atmosphere was wonderful and it was a great line up,shame it rained.. I have just watched Madness at Glastonbery on channel five and thoroughly enjoyed the programmes. A great band and a shedful of pop classics, well done to all and thankyou for bein Madness.,,, hope you taken the time to read this! all the best andy
Dear Andy If you were registered disabled I'm sure we had an area for that. There was the dreaded Golden Circle which caused the restricted view, I am sorry about that crap idea it won't happen again. I'm glad you weren't in there, though sounds like it would have been even worse for you .Travel wise what can I say? We can't arrange special trains I'm sorry to say. all the best and thanks for coming anyway, CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, I've just watched THE LIBERTY OF NORTON FOLGATE film what a brilliant peice of work. When is this masterpeice getting released on DVD.I would like to say it's an excellent peice of art by a truely great band MADNESS.I'm glad i'm a MADNESS fan you have really delivered the goods on your 30th year.To cap a great year MADNESS deserve a BRIT AWARD i speak on behalf of all MADNESS fans. You guys are truely a great band.30 years a fan. Dear Malcolm thanks, I love to hear this - another young fan for future reference. CB
hi chris,am currently watching madness tribute night on bbc4 whilst searching the net for your back catalogue, any pointers please as am struggling to complete my collection on cd as well as vinyl, many thanks, andy
Dear Andy It has been deleted for the past year or so. It is being re released by Union Square starting with One Step Beyond next month with the rest of the catalogue to follow [excepting Mad not Mad] CB
madstock Question: Hi CB, I was looking on e-bay and saw someone was selling one of the Madstock programmes...are there any left to sell in the madshop or do i have to pay the astrinomical prices people are charging on the bay....? All the best, Jason.
Dear Jason Which Madstock was it? The last one? There should be some left, try to contact the merch boys. CB
Paul O'Grady show was good tonight (Y). You all looked very smart, and cute :D. Madness night on BBC4 ! Thats my Friday night sorted ;). Counting down the days for Newcastle gig, 71 days, see you there ! xx Leah
Hiya Chris Wow ! The messages we send you are read and understood ! MADNESS back in Paris in 2010 by popular demand. Patience is the first thing that goes to my mind while i look at my electronic ticket (those back in the 80's did look much better, but y'know, those days are long gone...). Will i really be 45 next year ? No way ! Just do as i do, stay forever young, listen to MADNESS ! Fred
Dear Fred It was the promoter who asked us, after the last Paris gig. We said mais ouis. CB
I was woken early by my wife telling me she could hear someone breaking into our property, a short while later I am with the police checking for damage. Luckily they had not got in but we were a bit unnerved and were not going to get to sleep for the remainder of the night. I spent the next few hours securing the property in case another attempt would be made, it was then a dash to the train station to go from York to London.
Arriving in London we made our way to Regent Street so we could check the place out, as we did not have tickets for the arena we tried to work out the best view if watching on one of the big screens, although we were just going to end up seeing Madness on a screen for a 30min set we were happy with our lot.
Hanging around the stage before Scarlet and Viva we were approached by a guy asking if we had wristbands and if not would we like his. Being the sceptical type I tried to suss him out, he did not want anything for them because he had to leave early and wanted the wristbands to go to a true Madness fan, and as we were decked out in Madness T-shirts we must be. Thanking him we took the printed out forms and made our way to where you exchange the form for wristbands, having acquired our wristbands we made our way to the arena where we got a excellent view at the front. And to top it all off you did a full hour set, and what a great set too. We then made our way back threw the streets of London to the station and off home with all the memories of a good day. Thank you Madness. Phil AKA MoM
hello chris hope you are well ,me and wife are going to southend to see you on the 5th of december. It looks like the band i play in are gonna do a gigg in worthing in febuary ,We have started to do some originals now and we are gonna get a demmo made up.But most of the giggs we do are in pubs and they only want covers.Do you think the hope & anchor or the dublin castle will be a good idea to preview them ? if you think of any good other venues let me know cheers mate regards spencer
Dear Spence Have a go. Tell them you do covers - then do your own stuff anyway. all the best CB
Dear Chris, there seems to be a massive Madness push on at the moment with books, CDs, DVDs, BBC4 take overs etc. It's great. However I won't be able to afford food at this rate. It is great though and it is nice to see all these new goodies, please don't burn youselves out though. I may save one of the books till Christmas so the wife has something left to get me. Thanks for the advice re playing my old vinyl, they may have to gather dust for a little while longer while I save up. How about a behind the scenes film about the Christmas tour for DVD or M section, filmed, directed and staring CB Demille? SteveR
Hello, Chris. First I bought the superb LONF boxed set, then I bought the "just one cd edition"( Just to put it in the shelf with the rest of my Madness cd collection) and now....aaaarghhh, you release a deluxe edition with a DVD and of course I'll have to buy it,or are you going to release a just DVD edition with extras and the making of ?
I think that'll be it. But you never know. I thought it was bit too much but Woddy pointed out to me you would pay a tenner for a DVD and you are getting a DVD with an album thrown in thanks CB
Heard that there is a book being published on Madness called "Nutty Sound: The story of Madness. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nutty-Sound-Story-Madness/dp/1847726194/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c
I also saw there is a book starting publication exactly today, October 1, called "One Step Beyond." Location really sucks for me, as I don't expect any of those books to be shipped to North America, I bet. But I could be wrong - I found The Book of Useless Information, which is published by the Useless Information Society Suggs is a part of, in the local Indigo. They all sound really cool. And I thanked Thommo next door for signing the photo you sent me. I will do so for any other of the band who makes a page on here if they do. I hope any of your new re-released material makes it over here as well. Doubt any films will make it through, they're processed in region two format...
Dear Justin You can probably get that book from Amazon UK, I think. CB
Hi bud just wanted to thank you all for Regent street it was fab god this years been ace saw you all three times and looking torward to xmas gigs and just got the email for the revamp of one step beyond and its released on my birthday (honest) guess im not gonna be getting socks again this year if you dont get a brit next year they must be of their f######G heads thanks Terry B chris,s cupboard rools thommos treehouse drools
Dear Chrissy, I was wondering, how many of these emails do you get on a daily/weekly basis ? Are there so many it sometimes gets to be a chore to trawl through them or are there just enough to keep you entertained ? I find them (and some of your answers) very entertaining, so hopefully long may you continue. I really liked Mad Micks story about him and his mate at the concert at Hammersmith Palais back in '81(posted in July) I was also there that night and have my own little story if you're interested ! Anyway, I'll leave you to rest up for the Crimbo concerts, can't wait! Sharon x PS Did you get the little cake I sent you ?
Dear Sharon I don't get that many, maybe 5-10 a day. It depends what's going on or if we do a gig or something. At the moment there are 50 unanswered going back two days which is 25 a day I suppose.I got the cake. Very nice. We were filming an ad for O2 [the company, not the gig] and I shared it with Jim and I think Suggs had a sneaky bit. I would love to hear your story it may come in handy for a book we are putting together. thanks CB
Hi Chrissy boy' Would just like to say im looking forward to seeinng THE LIBERTY OF NORTON FOLGATE film tomorrow night is the film getting a release on DVD after it is shown on tv.Just asking as i could hint to my two daughters what i would like for christmas, they buy me something every year to do with MADNESS they know they can't go wrong they have heard your music about the house since they were kids (they are 22 & 19 now).Good luck with the tour see you in Glasgow love you guys here's to the next 30 years. cheers Andy..

HELP!!! I’m a Drama teacher in Birmingham who, two years ago, had the joy of seeing the Rep Theatre production of ‘Our House’ (I was a new teacher when it opened in London, so couldn’t afford to see it then) – I LOVED it and saw it 6 times (twice on tour). Since then, it has been my dream to perform the show as our amateur school production. So, I was thrilled when the copyright holders contacted me in July and said the rights were on their way. I informed the pupils (who love the DVD), briefed the staff and then waited… …October, still no confirmation! Our Christmas production is in ten weeks and I’m still hoping for good news.
PLEASE! Can you help us? WE only want to put on one performance of the greatest musical every made (my official opinion) – it feels like ‘Jim’ll Fix it!’ Is there anything you and the lads can do?
Ps. You are touring in Birmingham around the time of our show – any chance of the gang popping in to us for a visit?
Thanks. Craig J Robinson
Dear Craig Just go ahead with it. I will forward this to our management. all the best CB
Hey Chris, Like all of us, I will buy the deluxe edition of OSB (even if I have bought "The Lot" years ago, when I was having the normal edition of all the albums), but I have a frightening question:when all the albums will be out in the deluxe edition, will you made out a "Deluxe Boxset with all the deluxe edition albums" with more extras??? (this question was suggested by my wallet!!)
Thanks mon ami!
Dear Steve that may be a while yet. merci et au revoir CB
Hello Chrissy, congrats for a mad fulled year indeed once again. I know you have already had a listen to the madness tribute album, so i wonder what do you think about it, what are your favourite tracks? I wonder if you liked the our house cover since you are one of the songwriters. greetings Domingo
Hello cb Went to see you on the Paul o Grady show your jokes don't get any better tried to get your autograph after the show but you was down the road like a greyhound are you any more tv show in the near furture so i can get your autograph the other band members i missed only got chaz regards Andy
Dear Andy Sorry I missed you.Better luck next time CB
Oh my god!! Thank you so so so so much. You've made the worst year possible so much better. For my birthday the best presents ever your TOTALMADNESS cd and tickets for your opening gig at the B.I.C. Bournemouth. C U there I'll be the first in the queue. xx Nutty Girl Kaz
Hi Chris, mate have you had any thoughts on my previous email? (scooter club formation in Belfast). By the way, the newly announced gig on 29th December '09.... YES! you have made me the happiest Nutty Skin alive! (Without pushing my luck too far Chris, is there even a remote chance of 'her indoors' and i meeting you lot at the gig). I've tried without success each and every time the band has played Belfast, at Maysfield in 80s, Dundonald in the 90s and the Odyssey in more recent years... Do you think there's a chance, without exaggeration it would mean the world to me?
Dear Colin Go ahead make my day with the scooter club I asked the band, there was no complaints. Turn up in Belfast with the club and who knows? CB
Thanks for the reply CB. You've asked us to stay in touch re a possible backstage meet in Belfast. I don't want to be pestering you unnecessarily so was wondering when would be the best time to get back to you again on the matter?
PS, I haven't told Emma yet in case it doesn't happen. Fingers crossed.
All our regards, Robert (and Emma).
Dear Robert Er,...wait and see? closer to the gig please. CB
Mr. Foreman., Have just glimpsed a clip of Regent Street whilst sitting in Brisbane sunshine; was Mr. Bedford at the gig at all? If not, is all well with the maestro? I drink to your health; 'tis the least I can do - Alphonso Lamp
Dear Alphonso He wasn't there. Nor was he in on our Australia tour this year. CB
Gutted that One Step Beyond is missing some stuff on the bonus tracks - and there's room on one of the CDs for them too. Still looks like a really nice reissue aside from the MIA tracks. Hope it sounds good - this seems to be a prevailing trend again with CDs which is nice.
If they come out on vinyl would it be the straight album or would there be bonus tracks on an extra disc too?
All the best
Dear Mike We did have some say in the matter, you know. You can't please everyone it seems.I don't know if there will be vinyl versions. CB
It's me again Chris. Justed wanted to say many thanks for the great videos and the great music. I recieved Total Madness and played the CD at work last Friday, at our Friday's drink. I work for the UN (OPCW) in Den Haag and I have colleagues from all over the world and by golly some of them don't know Madness, but they know the songs. The mind boggles Again I can't stop thanking you all for 30 years of great music. I feel like a stalker, but luckily only a Chris's cupboard kind... ;) --
i would like to sayy a big hello to you all :) im your biggest fan and i may be visiting one off your tours :). even tho im young but i still no every word to all your songs, my favourite is Wings of a dove and lovestruck. i would like to ask what is your favorite :) Hannah :)
i found out last week that your good selves are coming to Belfast to plat @ the Odessey Arena.
Local radio had informed me. so..as i waited to hear from the offical camp, i waited & still heard nothin!
on looking on the Maddie offical site, true enough, on the gigs page theres the listing for the Belfast gig.
Iwudda thought the belfast gig should get the same front page announcement as the O2 on your madspace & offical site, plus maybe a blog email wouldn't go amiss!
i'm not complaining....(or am i) its just i want as many to know about the gig, so it willbe just as a great concert as it was in 2007..
many thanks stay nutty Birchy
Dear Birchy The O2 is in London, our hometown and a bigger venue. What's the prob? you heard about the gig, on the radio, then looked and it was on the site. That's why it says gigs at the top of the page. I have had no such comments from all the other areas we are plying in such as Bournemouth which also didn't get big headline news. treatment.Subscribe to the newsletter. CB
Hello, i am one off your biggest fans and and to say im at a young age i still no every word to every song. i would also like to say that once my brother's and uncles came to see you at one of your concerts in manchester and they dressed up as the whole band and every one wanted pictures with them :) Hannah Carter
I am hoping to purchase tickets for the Glasgow gig in December however I came to the gig in Ingilston Edinburgh 1992 when a riot ocurred and the police moved us out. I had bought four tickets for the gig, travelled a 100 miles to see you all and got put out and never seen any of the concert. I never got any refund as you played that night. I have followed the band all my life and now have my son listening to you. I hope that I get to see you this year and not miss out as you are the only band I really have ever wanted to see. Please make it special.
You are all great.
Dear Shona If there isn't a riot, then it should be great. As you pointed out we carried on in 1992. The police made us keep all the house lights on though. Weird. CB
Hey chris Please please can i get the bands autographs .You guys are so cool and i love your music since 1980 .I know this sounds silly i was singing one of your songs at work . my friend said to me shut up i said thats the song im singing .He laughed. Mark
Dear Mark Very funny. Sorry though I don't supply autographs. CB

Hi Chris I think you've been asked this before, but Its my 40th next year and I'm wanting to come down to camden town for a cultural visit round and about the various public houses down there, especially the Dublin Castle. Do you recomend any decent hotels near by? I've checked out Camden Lock Hotel, but only online. Ta John
Dear John I live in Hove so I don't really know any Camcen hotels these days. CB
You've been my best Band since i was 15 in 1992.And this is a Golden year in terms of being a Madness fan. Thanks A lot.
And thanks chris for writing back to me all those years ago in 93 regarding the old madness fan club.I never expected a reply as it was an old 1985 PO Box number on the back of a Complete Madness Video case. Dont expect you to remember but i still have the letter written on the back of an "Its ok im a policeman " flyer.Priceless!!!
Dear Ryan Thanks. Of course I remember that letter....er...was it the letter 'B'? CB
Hi Chrissy Boy, we hav tickets for Brighton gig however my youngest daughter, Chloe will be 11 that day and wanted tickets for your concert (which we got) however due to H&S regs we can't stand, can you do a shout out for her birthday! cheer Mr Bones.
Dear Mr Bones I will try to remember. What was her name again? You will be better off sitting anyway I hate seeing kids get squashed. CB
Thank you taking time to read this email. Below is email I have been sending out for the last 4 months about a charity auction so I can raise money for a very good cause. Since I started my collecting my dad had backed me all the way and was so pleased that I was taking the time for him. Sadly my dad passed away at the end of July but I promised to carry on and make my auction a success Thank you again. Darran
Dear chris and madness A brief history
My father was diagnosed with kidney failure 6 years ago and has made 3 trips to the local dialysis centre per week since he is 65 this year. I would like to raise some money to help towards the purchase of a new dialysis machine/equipment for the Telford renal ward he attends.
I thought a auction of sports items such as autographs and other sports memorabilia would be a good way to get the funds in as I have been to lots of charity sports auctions and they always seem to be very popular.
I am also going to auction any other autographs/memorabilia I can collect from television/film or music on the night of my auction as well.
I am planning on having a raffle as well on the same night.
This is the first time I have done anything like this so I am looking forward to any support I can get.
I can help with postage just let me know if you require this.
Date for the auction is 6th march 2010 at shifnal village hall.
Registered charity no 1010858 Shropshire & mid Wales kidney patient association Full address and details can be given upon request.
Mr Darran Preston
Dear Darran I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm sure he would be very proud of you. I will aske the team to send you something and I hope any readers of this will offer you some support too. best of luck Chris

thanks Shaun - sorry but we won't be doing any more UK outdoor gigs this year it's getting colder. CB
Hi CB Damm i can not wait for December this year, as I am soooooooooo lucky, as i get to see u all at the Apollo Manchester and in the same week i get to see you @ the o2 London. :) Wow! i am going 2 have the best Christmass ever Good luck with the new album Nutty Mad Andy
Hi Chris, Thanks for a brillant night yesterday all though we could only see you on th big screen with all the REAL madness fans. What was it like with the crowd by the stage and could you hear us lot round the corner? Darren
Dear Darren It was all a blur really. The Security firm were horrible, they tried to chuck our manager out, very over the top aggressive muppets.I spent most of my time wondering if they were going to throw the wife and kids off the stage. apart from that, the sound onstage was very iffy and er...what was the question? CB
bass player Question: hello mr.foreman looking forward to the manchester gig this december, having just watched clip of the regent street gig will mr.bedford be back in his rightful position, many thanks,Steve.
Dear Steve I'd say not very likely, but you never know. CB
Hey Chris, I was just wondering, does Ian Tokins still work for the band? If not, do you know what he's up to. I used to work with him at a Lighting co. in Greenford. Last time I saw him he was working for Morrissey! Also, what about Ian Horne? does he still do FOH for you lot? Cheers D
Dear D Toks lives in Cornwall and is a talented painter. And decorator. Ian 'Dad' Horne still does the sound. C
Evening gents I must say it was a stirling set last night in Regent Street. The only spoiler for me and a few other hundred Madness fans (without purple wrist bands) was the poor - poor quality of sound outside the 'Golden-not-quite-a-Circle'. And with the barriers so far from the stage it felt as if we were the social outcasts left to our own devices outside the city walls......hang on a minute, that sounds like a concept for an album!!!! To be fair I didn't enter the competition for the tickets so....whats my problem?
Dear Chris The sound wasn't too good where I was either. CB
Hey Chrissy Boy, Just got word that the maddest year - for me so far, is rounding of in Belfast ! Can't wait to see you guys again. Madstock was fantastic - bit of a drunken haze though! Two brilliant albums to boot mad mad mad! I think I just missed you all in the Dublin castle before Madstock. Please tell the tall blonde barmaid there that I fell madly in love with her.
Dear John I never go in the Dublin these days, I live in Hove. Tell her yerself! thanks CB
I am travelling from Hull to see you guys at the Manchester Apollo in December with my mate and his girlfriend. My mate and I have been fans since "The Prince" and strangely enough the first time we saw you play live together was at the Manchester Apollo in 1983. My mate actually lives in Santa Fe in the good ol' US of A now but is travelling over here to spend Chrimbo with his family and to come and see you guys.
I know you get loads of grovelling requests at gig times but I was wondering if there would be any chance of getting on your guest list to meet you guys before/after the show. Unless you gig in America again this could be the last chance my mate gets to see you and it would make his Christmas trip all the more special. His American girlfriend is now a huge Madness fan too!!!
Anway, really looking forward to seeing you all again. Congrats on 30 years in the business and also for a great Madness year. Here's for many more to come in the future. jeetee
Dear Jeetee Not much chance, I'm sorry to say. I do appreciate you support though. thanks CB Roll on December.
Yet another Madness compilation album - disgusting, open your f*cking eyes man and see where greed has got the world, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree - give me Branson's number...
Dear Cameron Calm down, this is a bit out of character. OK - first of all Richard Branson sold Virgin to EMI years ago. This was in 1992. So if you rang him, er what's the point? He won't know what you are on about. Secondly, we have always had a greatest hits album in shops, which [up until over a year ago] was Divine Madness. Virgin EMI is now owned by Terra Firma and we left the company and took our back catalogue with us. This [with the exception of Mad Not Mad] is now owned by Union Square. Still keeping up? Divine Madness was deleted over a year ago. Union Square are re releasing all our back catalogue, which has also been deleted. They have just released Total Madness which is a Madness greatest hits compilation and includes most of the videos too. It makes good business sense to have Madness greatest hits compilation out there, I think. Hope that explains it. Finally just don't buy it if you don't want it. all the best, CB
Not bad considering the competition from little known debutantes such as Madonna and Cliff & the Shadows PLUS the fact that Complete has recently been lurking in the charts for several weeks. You know, this band Madness could catch on! Big E
really looking forward to seeing yous in belfast again would really love to get meeting yous lovely lads so if possible and you have any spare backstge passes could you please send me a couple? xx leeanne
Dear Leeanne Do me a favour. We haven't even printed any yet! CB
Hi Chris, Just wondered if Bedders has actually used a Jazz Bass on any Madness stuff, I notice he uses one in the Grey Day video. What is his opinion of the Jazz Bass compared to the Precision Bass? Also, can I remind everyone about 'Madness Night' on BBC4 this Friday! Thanks, Stephen.
Dear Stephen He probably did. Mostly Precisions though. CB
why have you changed from newcastle arena to the smaller venue of o2 acadamey ? i was on holiday when the tickets came out and i we are realy gutted as i was taking my daughter of 8 years old who knows all the new album by heart and sings many of the songs going round the shops could you tell me if there are anymore tickets coming out after pre release???????????????? wil
Dear Wil Sorry it's sold out. The Arena was a bit too big this time. CB
Hello I am emailing a Big request on behalf of my hubby who is huge madness fan When he heard of the december tour, his little face lit up with glee only to be shot down in flames when he realised that the date for Newcastle was on a Saturday He is a taxi driver you see and I am on maternity leave with our second son so it is impossible for him to give up a saturday. I felt so sorry for him,I decided to have a look on the site and was going to buy him a ticket for chistmas. I then saw that all the tickets had sold out so it was a double whammy. Anyway, I also noticed that the band are having a night off on the Friday 10th December. Hence my email. Because the concert is sold out and your having the night off, what are the chances of doing an extra gig on the Friday at Newcastle. I know this is a long shot but to see his face if i can get him a ticket or a backstage pass would be worth everything to me and I know the band have a really good following in the North East so I'm sure it would sell out just like the Saturday. I will leave it with you but will keep checking in the slim chance this may happen. Many thanks for your time Caroline Brent
Dear Caroline You are very nice kind and thoughtful but I'm sorry, that's not possible. Keep checking though -you never know, something might happen. CB
Hey Chrissy Boy not got a question just want to thank you and the boys for a fantastic 28 years was the best man at my mates wedding highlight of the night was him and i dancin to one step beyond wi the kilts on cheers and keep up the good work see you in glasgow in december
