Hello. Chrissy Boy here, back where I belong.
Send me a question and I’ll answer it.
Within reason. Nothing about “when's the next gig” please. That’s in the bit called “gigs” on the main page at the top. If you want to just say hello to any of us, please feel free to post a comment.
Thanks CB x

Question

We know better...

Chris, you have my life time support. With all respect to Robbie, what has he done to music to recieve the award?? If album sales are the norm, the award is prone to the flavour of the year judgement.
It's a crying shame Madness hasn't recieved it yet.

Take care,
Andre
PS. Did I read somewhere in the cupboard you might be coming to Holland?? I know, I know, look at the 'upcoming gigs'section... ;)

Dear Andre
It is nothing really. Holland? Did I say that?.......Hopefully.
CB
A brillant year !

Not really a question this time CB, but had to tell you that not only am I seeing you lovely lot twice in December, I've just got tickets to see the other love of my music life Paul McCartney in December too, and they are front block tickets !!

So what with seeing Madness 3 times this year, buying Norton Folgate boxed set and Beatles boxed set, seeing Spandau Ballet this week (they were fantastic !), and now seeing Paul, it has been a very expensive but brilliant year !!
So thanks Madness for your part in it.
I'm off now to sell my body,(all those 50p's soon mount up you know!)
Sharon x

Dear Sharon
You'll more for the cakes, surely? Stick to what you know best love, don't sell yourself short...At least a pound.
thanks CB
It's time for bed

With the re-release of One Step Beyond, it would be great to have Bed and Breakfast Man released as a single (at last).
Is there any chance of this happening?

Thanks for a great year, and don't get calling it a day for a while yet.

Cheers

Ian

Dear Ian
I suggested that actually but Union Square were not up for it.
CB
Set List

Hi Chris, i'm 29 been a massive madness fan for years and so are lot of my mates. Seen you live many times and theres one thing thats a real shame! Its always a greatest hits set when there is so many brilliant album tracks. It always seems to be the same album tracks you play live ie bed and breakfast man, madness or take it or leave it. I'm sure there would be a market for playing say just songs of the first 3 albums and early b sides/12 inch songs. To me and a lot of people that would be a truely amazing gig to go and see. Any cahnce of doing something like that ? certainly more interesting than hearing sund and the rain etc !! One last thing, on the town should be next single or that close which is the best song on the album!!
Cheers Nick Giles

Dear Nick
This subject is a cause of some heated debate amongst the band. I agree with you.I think there will be some changes.
CB
What a joke

Dear Mr CJ Foreman,i have just read in the paper that Robbie ( the tool) Williams is to get a lifetime award at next years Brits, what a complete joke and a total fix, again you have been overlooked for some TOOL. After TLONF was in the running for a Mercury as well. I will be writing to my MP to complain and will be starting a petition on the Downing Street website to have this overturned, i am disgusted.Anyway my wife Denise and i will be on our sixth Madness concert in four years when you play Birmingham o2 hope to see you all then.My two year old daughter Izzy watches Tolal Madness DVD every morning and my eight year old Jordan knows nearly every word to every single keeping the nutty train going. Cheers mate Gary.

Dear Gary
You are not serious? Your local MP? you are having a laugh. I am not worried about the Brits, none of us are. Ring him for something more important like the wheelie bins or something.
thanks CB

Hi Chris, Cats here on Irene e:mail - are you lounging by the pool? catch up soon

er......cats? Cats who? Paul tag pag? What pool?
CB
re-recording

Hi Chris,
firstly can I echo all the praise for the 'Liberty' album. Got the box set and have to say it is still played constantly.'Seven Dials' is a personal fave, but not a weak track in the whole collection.

Following on from the suggestion to re record Mad Not Mad (please do), what about the off shoots, (Suggs' solo stuff and Crunch)? You did '4am' on the wonderful 'Wonderful' album, but what about some of the other tracks given the Madness treatment. At worst they could be added tracks to any future cd singles, and at best (cost permitting) you could re-record an album of selected tracks from those particular albums.

Looking forward to all the re releases + bonus tracks.

See you in Belfast

Cheers, Jim

thanks a lot Jim, I think we should keep it 'in the family' and just do Madness stuff.
CB
YOU LOT!

Just had to say that Liberty is one of my fave albums of all time. Been loyal to you from the early days and can honestly say you have managed to produce stuff to suit my every mood, drama and crisis. Loved the recent shows on C4 and hope you will keep on keeping on. When I was ill many years ago following a brain haemhorrage it was you guys that helped me see the light of day at the end of a very dark tunnel. Forever in you debt. Love and hugs to you all.
Julie

Dear Julie
I am glad we helped you in some way to recover.
thanks and love Chris x
book info & excuses...

dear Chris,
first of all sorry about my first question about the schedule release of madness titles...I've seen your answers about too late!
Second I really like to know something about the book"THE NUTTY SOUND:THE STORY OF MADNESS" by John Reed.
Is it done with your "co-operation"?
Will it really be released in october 2010? (one year before announced?)
thanks again
giorgio

Dear Gorgio
I don't know anything about this book.

Hiya CB just found out that Robbie Williams is 2 receive the outstanding contribution award at next years Brits Disgusting.Surely youll get it soon. Also were you aware of the death of the lead singer of Flowered Up recently the Camden band who so impressed me at the original Madstock.

Dear Martin
I'm not too about Robbie Flippin' Williams. It's a great shame about Liam from Flowered Up.

Kc xx ( christina clark)

Dear Christina

CB
Brits

Hi Chrissy Boy
Does the lack of Brit annoy you? What has Robbie Williams done to deserve a lifetime achievement award that you guys haven't? I will be boycotting watching the Brits again this year. See you in Bournemouth in December.

Matt

Dear Matt
I am so What was the question? He's probably sold more records than us in the last few years. What was the question?
CB

reissues

Hi Chris,
When will the other albums be released? Are these reissues also deluxe editions with 2 cd's. Any chance it contains some previous unreleased material?
Dinant

Dear Dinant
Next year the re release programme continues. There should be some extra tracks, on some maybe unreleased.
CB
Johnny the Horse

Johnny the Horse seems to have disappeared down a wormhole in the space/time continuum - what on earth has happened? We worry about trivia like global warming and the international banking crisis but this glaring miscarriage of musical justice remains unaddressed. Can I assume that the Honourable Members for Camden Town will take up the fight?
Mack Robinson

Dear Mack
It might get an airing soon.
CB
roddy byers

hello chris are you better at guitar than my mate roddy cheers.
jamie

Dear Jaimie
Oh no way - he rocks.Say hello from me.
CB
Follow up to Mad Not Mad?

Hi Chris

I recently read that there were aborted sessions for a follow up to Mad Not Mad.

1) Were any tracks completed?

2) Do you reckon they may see the light of day?

Dear Mike
Some of the songs ended up on 'The Madness'. Gabriels Horn, Be Good Boy, Song In Red and 11th Hour were recorded at this time, then re recorded. If I can find them, they should see the light of day. I think they were really good versions, with Mark and Woody playing on them.
CB
Replacements

Hiya Chris,

Any truth in the rumour that more Madness replacements are being lined up:

Patrick Moore on Keyboards
Animal from the muppets on drums
Bez from the Happy Mondays taking on Chaz's role.
and David Van Day on lead vocals?

say it aint so!

Tim

Dear Tim
It's [mostly] untrue.

personal update

Chrissy,I emailed the other month and jim kindly sent me the two photographs signed by all the guys.
I told you that I had (a before I kick the bucket list after beating cancer for the second time.
Well heres another to strike of my list.
Firstly I got to see the boys at the Isle of Wight Gig, 2nd I got your autographs and heres one for you all.Remember the porkpie hat from Dunne Co in the 1960's Worn by all the skins and you lot as well.
I wanted to get a new one but they have not been made for 30 years.
I found out who made them for Dunne co and asked if they could make me one?
WELL THEY DID and whats more they are now going to reintroduce it as a special order item and they are naming it after me - (THE MADDERN PORKPIE)and I am being given the licence to sell it again after all these years. If the gang would like to get an original porkpie just drop me an email with their head sizes and it will be my pleassure.
How about that for one to cross of my list. It Must be the Mad in my name thats driving me on coz no one ever thought It would happen.
God Bless ya lads
regards
Keith Maddern

Dear Keith
That is fantastic. I will send this on to the band. You have my admiration.
respect, Chris
Bedders

Hi Chrissy Boy
How come Bedders has left the band again? What a crying shame. He seemed well up for it on the Camden Crawl when he was interviewed recently. Are you able divuldge without betraying confidences.
Matty

Dear Matty
It can drive you nuts and he has other things to get on with. As do I, that's enough for one day...
CB
The Liberty of Norton Folgate

Hi Chrissy Boy

Do you think the liberty of Norton Folgate is the best album you have made as a band?

Personally, I think it is the best album you have done by far. A bit like the Rise and Fall, but better.
Matty

Dear Matty
I think you are correct.

Hi Chris,
My husband is a huge, massive fan and has been for ever....I've just managed to get tickets for your sold out gig in Leeds on 8th December through ebay - his 40th birthday surprise!!!! I know you get loads of requests to meet the band but it would make his lifetime to be able to meet you guys?? We own a shop in Leeds selling light and sound equipment, if you are in need of any equipment whilst you are up North check us out! Thanks in advance, Jo

thanks Jo what a great wife you are!

Basses?

Hello Chris
I'm a lifelong fan of madness (which isn't that difficult as I've only been here 16 years, and madness are a great band), and decided to take up bass about two years ago. I just wondered: what is the model of bass that Bedders is using these days? It's the nice red one without a scratchplate. Cheers!
Hal

Dear Hal
It's a Fender Precision.
CB
re-issue

Not enough space for the congratulations and thanks for your career and music also in my life. so, the question.
just had in my hands the splendid re-issue of ONE STEP BEYOND through salvo records...I know there will be all albums in program and I'm excited about but...do you already know the schedule of the next releases (around)?
many thanks again from torino,italy
giorgio

Dear Giorgio
Early next year we will re release Absolutley and Seven.

more mad not mad?

Hello Chris,
I just read your reply to an earlier question about Mad Not Mad and your idea of re-recording it with Barso .As the rights to MNM are owned by Virgin(?),by re-recording it ,would the band then own the rights to any new versions of those songs? thus allowing a CD release , as i understand the original MNM is not going to be re-released like all your other album. Also is this the reason Yesterdays Men,Uncle Sam etc were left off Total Madness?
Thanks from Andy

Dear Andy
If we re recorded it we would own it. The reason those songs are missing is correct.I am optimistic that EMI will re release it, as I still have some pals there
CB
Mad Nae Mad

Hi Chris If you were to get round to re-recording Mad Not Mad would you release it as 'The Dangermen Sessions Volume 2-Mad Not Mad', as it would, after all, be an album of cover versions?

On a more serious note, if it did happen, could you please re-record All I Knew as well? This has long since been my favourite Madness B side, perhaps even song.

Ironically it is a song I'd have liked you to have worked on a little more to bring it up to Mad Not Mad's quality of production as despite its greatness it doesn't quite sound finished to me. The lyrics are so poignant.

Looking forward to the Christmas gigs as ever.

Cheers

Paul

Dear Paul
Who knows? It was just [my] an idea. Thommo has blabbed.
CB
PS CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE MY 3000th ANSWER! I will get something appropiate sent to you.couldn't happen to a nicer train spotter, etc..
The alternate Seven tracks and so forth...

Hi Chris

Another two trivial questions from me amongst the apparent upheaval.

1) Any chance of the first pressing mixes on Seven making it on the remaster as bonus tracks?

2) Is there any previously unreleased stuff due to make an appearance along the line?

All the best

- Mike

Dear Mike
The first pressing mixes? Wha..? Probably lost somewhere. Not much unreleased stuff around which is why it is unreleased. Quality control you know.
CB
PS What is 'the apparent upheaval?'
quick song

Hi chris, i had a tape a long long time ago which i have since lost. There was a song on it which i can't find on any cd since although i though i had all the stuff, All i can remember is that it was by far the fastest song i have heard from you can you suggest what it might be?

sorry to be so vague but i wass only a nipper and havn't heard it in years

cheers stuart

Dear Stuart
Decieves the Eye? On The Beat Pete? that is really fast lyrically..Give me some slack at least an approximate year.

Song I Love

Hey Chrissy Boy, Wondered this for along time. Ever since i first saw Take it or Leave it many years ago, I wondered if Madness would ever release Sunshine Voice, or was it ever recorded, never heard a full version of it, but a real shame its not out there.
Jayney

Dear Jayney [Again-ey]
It was never recorded properly.

Exclusive area of site

Hi CB,
Just wondering if anything will be updated in the exclusive members section of the website, when i bought my copy of the boxset it said that there would be a "myriad of exclusive features, content and opportunities spanning 2009", but there isn't really anything amazing in there, plenty of vid and audio but i thought the "Opportunities" bit would mean, competitions and stuff like that but nothing really like that. Will there be anything like that in the future??
Jayney

Dear Jayney
It's more audio and video than anything else. I do try to keep it up to date.
CB
Push the button

Hiys CB

I'm getting dead confused Chris. Can we put this one to bed: are you actually saying that Keisha off The Sugar Babes is replacing Bedders for the Xmas tour?

Mad Mick

Dear Mick
Possibly. To tell the truth, it's more that we are embracing their approach to the music business.
CB

Newcastle Matinee

Hi Chris,
I've been a total fan since I was 3 and my little boy totally loves Madness too. I'd love to take him to the Matinee in Newcastle but he's just turned 3 so I was wondering whether the matinee will be too loud?
Cheers Jules

Dear Jules
It all depends, some kids don't mind it. Mine can sit at the side of the stage and don't care less. You can get headphones. I saw loads of people at Glastonbury with their kids on a backpack miles away from any noise with these yellow headphones on but I thought what's the point? He's probably too young, if you ask me. Which you did.If you still decide to come, stand near the back, he should be OK.

Dublin Madness

Hi Chris.
Hope you are well, I awoke this morning to the great news that Madness have just added dublin 28th December to the xmas tour, although nothing mentioned on a madness front.
Ticket master posted the gig early today.
Maybe now would be a good time to return that lucky old towel to chas that I got last year in Dublin.
Only kidding thats under lock and key anyway myself and my 14 year old son had a brilliant time at madstock and were looked after very well in camden town
We got to get our photos taken with both his good self and jennie bellestar and travelled down from camden in an old two tone bus along with jenny ( what a lady ).
Looking forward to seeing you all again..third time this year, god bless the old credit cards..im still paying for dublin last year.
Anyway thats it for now.

Victoria Gardens

How did you feel personally at the time when One Better Day was opted for a single over Victoria Gardens? As much as I love One Better Day (a beautiful song), Victoria Gardens has always been one of my all time favorite Madness songs. Do you know if all 3 available versions of Victoria Gardens (LP Version/B-Side of One Better Day 12"/The Business box set) will be collated for the remastered edition of Keep Moving?
Thanks for any insights,
Paul.

Dear Paul
I can't say it scarred me emotionally, to tell the truth. Three differant versions? ........The mind boggles. There was a good sort of dubby mix, that should be on there.

Newcastle Matinee Show

Hi Chris, Will you be playing the same set in the afternoon as on the night? I ask this because although I'm 45, my dear wife keeps telling me I act like a 12 year old and I would like to see all the songs played that the grown ups will see in the night show. By the way, Libery is a fantastic album, your best yet. See you in geordie land.

Dear Davey
I don't really know as of yet.

cross the canal !

hello. Daniel here. you guys are awsome. I wish I could come to one of your gigs. Unfortantly, I really can't because... well ... I'm broke >.<
traveling to britain isn't that cheap nowadays, and since I'm "only" 15, I cant go with just some friends, because you can't travel alone when your not 18 yet. So at least 1 parent should accompany us. But most of our parents are really lazy and wouldn't even think about helping us.
So my question is: Why don't you give some gigs in the rest of europe ? Belgium is a silly place, I bet there are more fans out there just like me who would just love to see you guys live on stage !It would be great to come see you guys in the lotto arena in antwerp, or the AB in brussels.

thank you and goodbye ^^

Dear Daniel
Holland isn't too far from you...we might be there sometime.
CB
One Step beyond 33 1/3

Dear Chris, I have google'd the web and I have also tried to send an e-mail to Terry from his official website, but I couldn't do it. When you bump into him can you thank him for a wonderfull book about an album of an upcoming group in the 80\'s. ;) It was great to get some behind stories about the songs who defined my youth. I hope he will do the same and write books about the other albums this band made.
It is true that there is not a lot of books published about Madness, I therefore have to confess (and I aplogize f I have offended any of you), but I have ordered the unofficial biography about Madness. Back in the days when I was still young and there was no internet, I would cut out every bit of newspaper clipping about the Magnificent 7. NME, Dutch music papers, everything I could get my hands on. I still have the collections somehwere in the attic. These days I would rather settle for a good book, my comfy chair and a glass of some sorts. One Step Beyond 33 1/3 lasted one good Sunday + listning to B-sides (the little gems). We want more, we want more, please...

Take care and give everyone, again, my warm felt thanks for 30 years of Madness. This year has been a rollercoaster ride of memory lane feelings. 30 years have flown by so fast, incredible.

Andre

Dear Andre
You will probably have to subscribe to Terry Edwards.com then he will have you, or try his myspace page.

Strings

Dear Chris,
I remember sending in a question ages ago, (either to the old website, or to the one Chas used to have) asking if you'd ever consider taking a string or brass section on tour. Chas (jokingly) replied along the lines of "no - do you relise how much these things cost?."
But it's nice to hear the Violin Monkeys on stage with you these days. Whose idea was it to bring them along?
Regards,
Graham.

Dear Graham
It all started in 2003, when Thommo requested a sax roadie, so we got the legendary Steve Turner in and the next thing you knew he was doing all the hard bits for Thommo [for example the sax solo in One Better Day at Guilfest 2003]. Then with the Dangermen Suggs said we really need a trombone so they got in Mike and Joe trombone and trumpet and we can't get rid of them now really, they are legend. They did some brilliant stuff on the Liberty album.
CB
Suggs

Hi can you please answer a question..where does the name "Suggs" come from as its not an abbreviation of his name ?? ordered my tickets for Hogmany the day they were released..will have to ask santa for thermals for xmas ..outdoors concert in December in Scotland... brrrrrr !
Helen

Day In The Toon

Dear Chrissy Boy
My daddy is going to take me to see Madness when you play in Newcastle and I'm dead excited. Would you be able to play for me either the song about the scary train, the song about driving in me car, the just another day song (because i like the whistling bit and its one of my dad's favourites) or the song about rainbows (but tell Suggs not to say p!55ed cos my dad says its a rude word)

Thanks

Jack Sharpe (age 5 and a half)

Dear Jack
We will try to do one of them and cover your ears up if Suggs says a naughty word...

Royalties

Hiya CB hope ur fine, when a song is written and selected who gets the royalties from that song is it you all get one seventh or the writer gets a larger share
martin

Dear Martin
It is split like this; 50% to the writer [or writers] and the other 50% to all 7 members of the band.

Cardiac arrest played live??

Hi Chris
First of all you've heard it all before but thanks for being such a great band. Partly thanks to being a fan of Madness I moved to the UK 6 years ago and met a lovely British bloke, and I'm pretty much settled down here now. Anyway, I have been wondering why you never play "Cardiac Arrest" live? Is it because it was banned years ago and you're scared someone might still sue the band for offensive lyrics? I think this song is just brilliant and I love the video. Just before I go, TLONF is a brilliant album, and if you could pop in Cardiff in your next tour that would be great. Thanks! x Do

Dear Do
No, we just stopped playing it.
thanks CB
Liverpool 1984

Question....
Chris, Many moons ago when i was at Uni up in Liverpool i saw the band play a miners benifit gig. I can clearly remember you playing a song where Mr Paul Weller took over the vocals, but for the life of me i can't recall what the song was? also do you have it saved on tape somewhere as i would love to hear it again? Did you ever get around to seeing The Jam live in there hey-day? I was fortunate enough to see you both play with in a few weeks of each other at the Hammy Pally back in Nov/Dec 1981 happy days!
jane

Dear Jane
The song was Shop Around, originally by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.Sorry there are no tapes of it, as far as I know.

Castlebar Ireland

Hello my good man,
Just a quick question for you. many many years ago you played a festival in Ireland, at a place called Castlebar, at the time the greatest day of my short life, however I can not find the date of said concert and i really would like to know.
One reason I want to know is that the next day a photo of me was on the front page of the national paper and I really want to get a hold of the paper. Please can you help.
Paul
PS: Thank you for 30 years of pure pleasure, genius, fun, laughter, sweat, and copious other positives, you guys are the soundtrack to my life.

Dear Paul
I looked this up on Google typed in Madness + Castlebar festival and I got this;

we were on the last day, the 31st

cupboards

dear chris
i discovered that my kitchen cupboards have, or at least had, woodworm. if the woodworm is still active can i treat the cupboards with something to get rid of them or do i have to replace the cupboards completely? alternatively, if the woodworm is gone, is there any anything i can use to fill in the holes with? i like the 'wood look' and would prefer to not have to paint it but the holes are rather unsightly and i don't want new worms using them to move in.

also, why aren't you playing in dublin?

cormac

Dear Cormac
Are you sure it's woodworm? It may well be that someone was playing darts. I have sorted out a Dublin gig as well.I hope this is OK.

bedders

sorry another bedders question, but all your references about the sugababes makes me wonder whether your pointing towards a replacement will allow you to carry on? hpoe this is not the case as it always works best when its the magnificant 7. Bedders did seem slightly detached from the precedings during the concert of lonf, although having watched it 3 times already it was truly brilliant, Csrl and suggs seemed to be really enjoyoing their little clips bits too!

2 things

Hi CB 2 things I am thinking of:
when I was at your gig in Berlin at the Spandauer Zitadelle they played an instrumental tune before you guys eventually went on stage to start off with OSB...is this a song of yours? I haven't hea
rd it before. Maybe you can find out what it was...
Second: the madness evening at BBC4 at one of the last sundays...as I do not live in the UK i was not able to watch it (neither on TV nor on the iPlayer).
Is there any chance to get the video of the Glastonbury gig?
I read you may re-release "Take it or Leave it" and the TLONF-show will be released on DVD soon...
Best regards
Michael

Dear Micheal
Bedders got that song from a mad album, I can't remember the name of it now. The Glastonbury show was filmed by the BBC' so I don't think it will surface on DVD.Take it or Leave it I don't know about any planned DVD release either, but the Hackney Show is out with a new edition of the Liberty album.

Cresta!

Hello Chrissy Boy!

At last, I had a spare £45 for your beautiful box set (freelancer not a skinflint). I retrieved it from the post office on Friday but haven't had time to give the music my undivided until this evening. Love, love, love: One Fine Day; Let's Go (only heard it live before); Fish 'N' Chips. I'm fixated on CD2. Not listened to 3 at all - yet.

So, my question for now is where did you all get your M section crests from? I imagine your boat is because you live by the sea (still envious). Or were you on Blue Peter? What about the others? I thought clicking on one might take me to a little profile page of each of you. Would be nice. :)

dear CB
wot I ....... idiot I am, wer did I get Madley from.. My sincere apologies, I remember rushing down the shops on da day Wonderful woz released, brilliant album, so would be nice to here some tracks from it played live on a regular basis. Disagree with Barso's piano tho, his playing is better than ever, but the sound needs to change back to how it woz in the 90's. I think he used an effect on it which made it sound clearer and better, speak to him, he might agree. Thats enough from me now, sorry to be a pain..

Have you got loads of money or what? Just stick with one guitar until you learn how to play it. If you play live maybe you will need two. Save the money buy some strings, a tuner, a good amp and a case etc. Unless you already have.If you are like, really goood get a Gibson to really kick some ***.Totally differant sound.

qs

hi madness,
i have a few questions, firstly you know in dut devil the word equinamous what does it mean? ive searched dictionaries and asked teachers and they dont know! also sorry if this is ignorrant wat is a matinee show?
and last but not least on the dangermen sessions it says volume 1, is there a volume two or will there be?
much obliged ben

Dear Ben
Use Google fer cryin' out loud! I just typed in equanimous and got;

- in full control of your faculties; "the witness remained collected throughout the cross-examination"; "perfectly poised and sure of himself"; "more self-contained and more dependable than many of the early frontiersmen"; "strong and self-possessed in the face of trouble"
self-collected, self-possessed, self-contained, collected, poised
composed - serenely self-possessed and free from agitation especially in times of stress; "the performer seemed completely composed as she stepped onto the stage"; "I felt calm and more composed than I had in a long time"

Not like me then.

A matinee show I will try Google again;
Matinée may refer to:
A performance of a play that takes place in the afternoon rather than the evening.
Well in our case a gig.

Dangermen sessions part two I shall see what Google says once more;

Dangermen sessions part two
'not very likely in my time'.

In the re pressing it will be the changed version. However I don't know if we have done any re pressing yet. I think so, as the artwork has changed a bit as well. There was a blank black panel on the right of the booklet [where the band photo is] in the original one, which has been filled in.

CB Timeshare?

Hi Chriss
Lou here, again! (don't you get sick of the same old people, like me for instance, writing to you again and again?! No? Good!) Okay, so I've heard (you told me in person and from other sources) that you're having a big load of building work done and that you are either building, or renovating, a huge mansion (yes, that's what i heard it was), in Hove (actually) and it includes a swimming pool, we think, (Jackie from Dover on Madness Central spoke to a man who knows you and does something with swimming pools)
which is lovely. So, I've decided that you must be absolutely loaded now, probably, and that we (the Madness fans who have bought the box sets, and the Madstock wristbands, and the USB sticks and the tickets to Southend and Brighton and the O2 and Paris) must have helped you get to the lovely financial position that you are now currently in, and we are very very glad to have helped you get there and don't begrudge it one bit, because we love you, and because of "all the joy you bring" us.But it does lead me to the conclusion that this must mean that we are each probably entitled, therefore, to come and stay in your lovely new mansion with you, say, for a couple of days each a year (like a sort of timeshare thingy) and my reason for writing to you this evening is to ask you if I can therefore please book Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2009? If you could get back to me soon with confirmation of this I'd be very grateful. Thanks CB!

Love
Lou

I made most of my millions by selling my soul, or rather 'Our House' for use in various adverts. So I should really have the lovely people from Maxwell House USA over before you. Also, it is very true from live shows. However the box set you mentioned and in fact the Norton album was all financed by ourselves from our gig money and has not quite broken even yet - but it is doing very well. Yeah right millions ha - ha...I wish. The pool gets done next year...Maybe. I will sack them for blabbing for a start off and do it myself.

Newcastle Matinee.

Hi Chris,

I have just booked my ticket for your matinee show in Newcastle.

I am looking forward to seeing you perform again, and I am wondering if Madness will be performing any material from disc 2 from the Norton Folgate box set ?

Either way, I am chuffed to see the band play on your 30th anniversary and I congratulate you all on your achievements.

Another thing, if I may please, Chris. I do not drink that much these days, and I now have a rule not to drink alcohol before 2pm if I am out on the razzle early. What time will Madness be on stage ?

folgate single dilemma

Dear Chrissy Boy,
general consensus amongst the maddie community is that either Forever Young or On the the Town should be released:howzabout both as a double a-side with extra trimmings?Further more,I presume the b-sides of NW5 & Dust Devil were part of the Dangermen sessions, anymore in the vaults.& one more thing,I collared Monsiuer Barso at Madstock & enquired if you had any inclination to record Sunshine boys.Saw it on Take it or leave it dvd a while back & it blew me away.lots of love a voracious nutty boy

Forever Young gets my vote. Sunhsine VOICE never got finished.

a few questions

Hi bud hows you just a few questions for you now that I hear you are playing Edinburgh at new year can I pleeaassee get on the guest list for the gig ( I think I deserve to as it was my idea for you to play there in the first place cos I have emailed you asking to do so hundreds of times, well at least three he he and I know it will be near impossible to get a ticket unless you are a vip ) can youn also tell me what the situation is with the matinee shows cos my boys are 12 and 8 years old and want to go but can adults accompany them as I am not to sure bout them going on their own and finaly whats the story with the showtime shoutout at gigs cos I cant remember it from the early days but it seems a big part of the shows now so when did it start and how did it come about ( I was really peed of when thet cut it from the glastonbury set on bbc4 ) cheers Terry b fae kirkcaldy

Dear Terry
Guest list? Ha! The matinees were supposed to be just for kids, then of course the kids have to be accompanied and I imagine there will be some trouble with health and safety and so on but hopefully they should be OK, as long as you don't stick them right up the front.

The Showtime thing..oh dearie me. What happened was, we did a gig last year and I was a bit 'refreshed'. I looked at the set list and something occurred to me which was related to the Matrix film. We went to see the first one in New York in 1999 and there was this guy sitting in front of us with his girlfriend and he was quite excited and animated. [us being Suggs, Chas, Thommo and me]During the scene when they ask for 'guns lots of guns'

this bloke was rubbing his hands with glee and anticipation and he turned to his date and said quite matter of fact, calmly, with no shouting, 'showtime'. Meaning some a** was about to be quite righteously kicked. Which of course it was, he was totally right. So back to the gig, I thought this is the last part of the set here, it's all killer, no filler, all thriller, just House of Fun, Wings of a Dove..er...and ..er.. what's some of all the other big hits what we have had? Baggy Trousers etc..in other words......SHOWTIME!!!! Suggs always makes me do it and the brass boys seem to be quite amused by it. I ask Suggs not to give me the mike but he always does.
thanks CB
PS I think the gig where I had this epiphany was the O2 in 2008.

Young man, g'day....
Will the DVD/CD of the album be released in the land of Oz, or is it easier to order firectly from the Madshop? Who is Mrs Hutchinson

Hi Chris,
There is mention of a Mrs Hutchinson in "Idiot Child" and on the "7" album, is she someone who exists as she's been mentioned twice, also do you all know that TLONF is the first "Madness" album not too have you all appear on the album cover (I know "The Madness" didn't have any faces on the album cover and also any compelation albums), thorougly enjoyed the Madness night on BBC3, it was good to see "take it or leave it again" after last seeing it on video in about 1983 and the concert was a breath of fresh air, very entertaining.

All the best mate.

Idea...

Hey hey Commander.
Hope you're well. Great gig at regent street by the way. Did you get a flyer for Total Madness? I tried to give Suggs one but he wasn't having any of it. Our dedication to the flyering cause ended up with me walking into a lamppost on the Chal Farm Road. But anyway...
Heres a truly inspirational idea for the deluxe cd/dvd reissue of Folgate - how about the CD is done like a Blue Plaque? Then the writing on the CD - Madness - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate 2009 etc - could be like the writing on the plaques. Just thought it might work, as its about London history and the rest.
Just thought I'd suggest it.
See you at Swindon dude - fancy a bevvy beforehand?
Regards
Owen The Nutter
PS That'll be fifty quid.

Dear Owen
I have had an idea for it - which will cost a bit less.

Chris,
Great News, Looks like I will come along for the afternoon session. Does this mean its a toned down version with no school uniform and fizzy pop? Anyway, enough of the rambling!!! Cant wait, excellent news. This tour manager is making you work too hard.... I assume it is not LC this time...
Garry

Dear Garry
LC? Mr Charteris? He is in Dubai.

Lee

Hello Chrissy Boy.

Why is it when i watch a Madness vid. Lees always the one in a dress, mind the clip of him in a tutu is just classic.

I don't know. I tried it once for Sun and the Rain.I just remembered this. It was supposed to be one of those weather cuckoo clocks that exist in my imagination where a woman comes out of one side when it's sunny and when it rains a man comes out the other side and chases her with an axe or some weird stuff. I had a wig with pigtails and really nice little gingham dress on. I wasn't as funny as Thommo really, so we
didn't use it.

Kids and Madness

Not sure what it is about Nutty Boys music, but other than kiddie stuff, it's all my 4yr old will listen to. She requests TLONF in the car - can't get enough of it. Thanks!
Brian

Dear Brian
I have to say this is not really the demographic we were aiming for, but very nice to know and far better for her than the Tweenies,X Factor or some such vapid rubbish stuff. My kids got New York Dolls, The Arctic Monkeys and some old reggae [The Paragons]last week. This week it's my turn, so some classic Hear'Say, Jason Donovan and Sinitta.

Monsieur Barso's Box of Tricks

I did think about swimming to Amsterdam and asking him myself but sense prevailed - do you know what keyboards Mr B is using at the moment in that famous rig of his?
If he is feeling in particularly benevolent mood he may even give me some clues on the tones he is using before pushing buttons to try to replicate the sounds on my Korgs drives me completely nutty.

Bedders and Monsieur Barso

Hiya Chris
Are Bedders and Monsieur Barso coming back for the xmas tour or at some point in the future? After watching Young Guns go for It on Friday on BBC4 the previous departure of Mike Barson was followed by Madness splitting up. I have gone into a SERIOUS panic now that this may happen again.
Please, please dont say that this is on the cards especially after Norton Folgates acclaim and success. Thanks
Caz

Dear Caz
It is impossible to leave this band; I have tried a few times. It's like the Foreign Legion...Don't panic, think of the Sugarbabes they'll still carry on.

Mandy who wanted photo's of Romsey

Hi again Chrissy,
Sorry to email so soon (twice in a week?, I'm not a stalker -honest!)

In your August posts there was one from Mandy who wanted to know if she could get pictures of the Romsey gig. As I was at the front, I got quite a few good shots (even a smiley one of you with "Snugs"), I don't mind emailing some to her if she still wants them, but don't really want to publish my email address on here (I don't want a stalker either !).
If she should contact you through this, would you mind passing my email address to her, or hers to me?
I'll try not to email you again for at least a week.... or at least a few days... maybe !

Sharon x

Ps Should I have sent this via (who seems to be) your new secretary Graham Y ?!

Dear Sharon
What is this? Friends re united? So I act as a go between for you. Then you both get MY email address and then I stalk you both?

O2 Tickets

Hi CB
Thanks for your kind words about my Dad passing away. I used to laugh when he called Suggs Stuggs.
The site selling the seated tickets at rip off prices is get me in, a ticketmaster company, check it out and you will see what I mean.
I was wrong about some tickets being 190 per ticket it was 186.99 per ticket I've just checked, there are other tickets cheaper than that, but all are way above face value.

Thank again CB

Anthony

Dear Anthony
That getmein is a sort of portal for ticket touts, by the look of it. Do it directly through our site, or go to the official ticketmaster site. A lot of the shows have sold out though, hence the inflated prices on getminandtuckemup.
CB

all sorts of stuff

Hi Chris,
Long time fan - I won a copy of "It Must Be Love" when you and Lee were on LBC in 1981! I still think the b side was better. (honest, not just cos u wrote it!) Also lucky enough to have my copy of of MAD NOT MAD signed by all six of you ( as it was at the time) at Virgin Megastores on Sep 30 1985....A very underatted album, particuarly "Coldest Day". My question is....Has Lee ever asked Mark to collaberate on one of his songs - because I think that a (Thompson/Bedford) song would be great.... Also a (Mcpherson/Woodgate) song has never materialised...Is this just one of those things?...And also, what track (non single) that you wrote or co wrote do you think is your best?

Best Wishes,

Clive

Dear Clive
Those collaborations could still happen yet. The way it works is someone has a tune and gives it to the mainly lyrical ones [Suggs Chas and Thommo] and this also works the other way round. My current favourite tune is 'One Fine Day' from the box set.
CB
a request

Can you tell me anywhere I can find the original to Rockin' in A Flat (the only song I have ever 'sung' in front of an audience and failed miserably as I'd been drinking all day after passing out of the Royal Artillery back in the dark ages) I have found all the others that you did and they grace my iPod but never this one.
Cheers
Mike

PS see you in Bournemouth for the Christmas tour (I'll be the one in the Madness t shirt)

Dear Mike
Our version is on an album called 'One Step Beyond'. The original is by Bazooka Joe. You should be easy to spot, unless out merchandisers pull their fingers out.

She is funny isn't she? So is Paul O Grady in the ad breaks he was telling us some class stories about his false nails back in the day, for example. We could easily play live except they are not really set up for it on that sort of show.

Madley tracks and barso's keyboards

Hi CB
just a couple of questions on your live sets. First of all, would like to know why the band opt not to play any tracks from Madley, which is one of your best albums ever, songs like like saturday nite-sunday morning and my communicator, which are both brill, would slot in very well in your current set. I was a little disappointed at madstock 09 that neither of these were played. Also, it's been noticed of late (glasto/victoria/i.o.w/regent st gigs) that the sound on Barso's keyboards has changed, the piano sounds a bit too flat at times, like its not load enough, especially on the solo parts. This is in contrast to the live performances in the 90's, where the piano had a different sound and stood out much more, therefore, in my view, sounded alot better. This is notable on the madstock 92 cd, listen how clear the piano sounds and maybe please ave a word with Mike, he needs to revert back to that sound, i think u might agree..Sorry to nag, but life long fan.. take care Tote

Dear Tote [again! give someone else a chance!]
Madley? do you mean Wonderful? Good point though. I really like Lovestruck and it's often on the setl ist I get all geared up for it and -gone!Mike's piano it depends where you are though. It usually sounds pretty loud and clear to me.

Michael Caine

I'm sure you have been asked this thousands of time but does the Madness song use Michael Caines voice? If not, who is it on the original recording.

Hi, just want to say thanks for the best gig ever. I have followed Madness for 30 years, I have all the albums, singles, CD's, videos etc. Unfortunately I have been unable to see the band as I have been out of the country for 20 years, so it was great to be one of the select few that was in front of the stage. You guys are as good live as you are on vinyl!! Brilliant and after that I will definitely be getting tickets for the gigs in December. Once again thanks

O2 Gig

Hi Chrissy Boy.

Just to say, like everyone else has, how brilliant Madness night was on BBC4. Loving the new album and think Dust Devil is just amazing can't but not dance like a nutty boy when ever I hear it.

Just wondered if you know if the stage set up at the o2 will it be the same as last time or more traditional down one end of the arena?

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Mike
It will be the same as last time, which was down one end of the arena. Wasn't it? I think so...
CB
take it or leave it film

hi ya again CB
just would like to say that after watching the Take It film for the 1st time on friday night, not only I thought it woz pretty good, but it shows how tough it woz for the band in those very early days. Also, it confirms that the core of the band woz your good self, mighty Barso and Thommo, and to this day, I think that still stands, tho Suggsey and Chas are terrific musicians and great frontmen. It does also show how fundamental Woody's drums and Marks bass are to the bands overall sound, both of them quite unique players and maybe slightly unsung heroes.
By the way, my 16 year old daughter, who is normally either on her phone or in fronty of the mirror in her bedroom, did not leave the sofa the other night and watched the complete madness night on bbc4. Now she is nagging me for some tickets for december, tho she came with us and already seen you three times in the last year, at this rate, I am going to have to remortgage the house. ha
stay cool

Hi Chrissy Boy

Ive been a huge fan of madness since i was a little girl and my big brother used to get me to sit listening to baggy trousers over and over till i had the lyrics witten out then we would sing it back (wasnt really a barbie sort of girl lol) So was pretty chuffed when i back from the pub last night to find take it or leave it on the tele sky +sd The Liberty of Norton Falgate supposed to be working but watching it now. The Madness :o)

Hi Chris! Hope all is going well. I have listened to Norton Folgate so much lately, I think its easily one of the greatest Madness albums. Im watching BBC4 right now, the Hackney show looked amazing. Its so great to see you being appreciated as the geniuses that you are. I live in southend but couldnt get tickets for december... yes I'm gutted!!
I have a quick question for you if I may? Are there any live recordings or unreleased songs by The Madness? I have the CD, &" box set, and some demo's i found on MIS but did read somewhere years ago that there were more songs recorded after the first CD and the demos were issued on cassette? Also I heard a rumour TM played the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh, although I was only 11 then so wouldnt have got in! Anything you can tell me about that period would be awesome! Do the band think highly of the album? I hope they do, I really think it has some fantastic songs on it. Keep making great music!!!!! :o)
Paul

Dear Paul
THE Madness never played live. There might be few bits and pieces knocking around but they are only demos of the songs that ended uo on the The Madness album. I will dig them out for the re release.
thanks CB
Any Question Almost Answered

Hello Chrissy Boy! Me again. Just a quickie.

On Sat night/Sun morning I was working on one of my several jobs as an AQA researcher. (Any Question Answered - text us on 63336. Wisdom costs 95p; wit thrown in for free.)

Apart from the usual 'What clubs are open till 4am?' and 'Where can I get a night bus from A to home?' I suddenly had this:

'How was the biggest band in the 80s fan based?'

What did they mean?! I was more than a little miffed off that I had to pass. What would you have answered? Bear in mind you can't be rude - unless someone's asking multiple questions on the same subject.

Amanda xx

Dear Amanda
You...again! What sort of divvy question is that? I thought I had some daft ones.I think maybe it was :
Which band in the 80's had the biggest fan base? We had 35,000 on ours but probably Duran Duran had more.
CB
WOW!

Hello Chrissy Boy!

WOW is all I can say about TLONF. The concert itself was spectacular enough but the film is a masterpiece. Congrats!

One of my quiz friends was also enthusing about it tonight. I enthused more and let slip my impression of the black-toothed Cockney hag who accosted me in the Empire foyer, demanding to check my bag for bottles of gin. The music hall idea was touch of genius. It was so beautiful!

Back to the point: said friend loved the BBC4 night but his wife accidentally taped over Take It Or Leave It (which he's never seen before) before he could watch it. I can't transfer it from my BT Vision box to a DVD - is that even legal? So my very long-winded question is, are there any plans to re-release Take It Or Leave It? I wouldn't mind a real copy myself.

Thank you

Amanda xx

Dear Amanda
It was on again on Sunday. It will probably be on again as it's the BBC you now they love a repeat. Otherwise hopefully some time next year it will come out again.

my kids

Just a line to say how much my wife and I appreciate what you and the band have done this year. I always liked Madness as a teen but to have become a fan at 42 says so much about the new work you have produced. Even my kids (9 and 13) have become fans and love the Liberty album. My question is, how long do you feel you can continue in this vein and is there yet more sensational albums in you? Simon 'Spark' Parkinson

Dear Simon
I would like to think there is.

O2 Tickets

Hi CB
Been trying to get 2 good seated tickets in the lower tier at the O2, as yet they are not on sale with ticketmaster, but I have found a couple of sites selling them at 2 or 3 times there price, one site even selling tickets for 190 per ticket. How do they get hold of these tickets and why are they allowed to rip off loyal fans?
The reason why I'm looking for seated tickets is after 30 years of standing and getting beer chucked over me by idiots, I'm getting fed up with that and getting to old for beer drenched clothes.

Here's hoping I can some tickets, and then I will be looking forward to another great night at the O2 with Madness the greatest band on earth.
Oh by the way on a sad note my Father passed away suddenly on the 5th july 09, he always used say to me the singer of Madness whats his name Stuggs was on TV last night.

All the best Chrissy Boy

Anthony

Dear Anthony
I'm sorry to hear about you Dad. Fancy calling Suggs Stugss eh? I call him Snugs myself. I just looked for tickets - it's usually the standing ones that go first.
Wha!!!!!..what a rip off joke the booking fee is! How much does it cost to post two tickets? I would go down there in person myself. Depends of course where you live I suppose.

Hi there just wanted to say I think the new album is fantastic. I have been a fan since I was 14 years old (now 43) and I think it is one of the best things you’ve ever done. Also thanks for being one of the most genuine lovely bunch of people. My sister and I used to follow you guys around London and would always wait outside the venue to meet you after the show. All of the band were always really lovely and would have chats with us, we must have been right pains. One of our highlights was the gig you did for Gary Crowley on the Thames because we got to see you play so close up and Woody ponced fags of us. I saw you play at Glastonbury this year with my 17 year old son, who also loves Madness. It felt really special. Cheers Nutty Boys.
Sarah Montagu

thanks Sharon, Woody has now given up smoking. It was getting too exspensive.

Hammersmith Palais - My story !

Thursday November 19th 1981 (I was 19).
My two friends Chris, Ruth and I made our way upto Hammersmith from work, as we walked into the venue we were amazed to see that we could get right upto the front of the stage,(we'd only been to seated venues before). We pushed our way through the crowd and managed to secure a spot leaning on the left hand side of the stage, back in those days there was no gap between the audience and the stage.
When Madness came on we were very excited to realise that Chas and Suggs were right in front of us, at one point I got so excited I grabbed Chas's foot and nearly tripped him over ! (sorry Chas).
The crowd was getting so boisterous by this stage that Ruth was getting a bit claustraphobic so had to watch the rest of the concert at the back on her own. Friend or no friend there was no way Chris and I were leaving our prized spot, so we hung onto the stage for dear life (or in my case Chas's foot !).
Then Suggs announced that he was going to sing your new single "It Must Be Love", strangely Chris and I seemed to know the words so were singing along when Suggs noticed and held the mike down to us during the chorus !!! (we realised later that we knew the words as my Mum was a Labi Siffre fan).
At the end of the concert a lot of the audience had thrown their hats onto the stage, Chas grabbed a couple and gave them to Chris and I, I've still got mine !.
My diary entry for that day says "Saw Madness at Hammersmith Palais - Bloody Brilliant !!! - We were right at the front, Chas and Suggs were really close, not even a foot away. It's the best night of this year !!"

Fast forward to Sandown 2008.
This time Ruth and I got to the front of the barriers on the right side of the stage, in front of you and Lee (standing next to the two Baggy Trousers blokes who always dress in Cairo gear).
Your'e doing "It must be Love" again and I'm yelling at Suggs telling him I love him (I do tend to get a bit excited at your concerts !) and calling him over so I can take a picture, when he does I start blowing him kisses and he makes a rude gesture towards me with a leary old man face, and then slaps himself on the hand (look at the Sandown clip on youtube), I was very excited that he singled me out again 27 years later (obviously it was just coincidence) but it made my evening!
I'm still friends with Ruth and Chris all these years later and Ruth and I still go to your concerts. We've seen you on all the tours starting with Hammersmith Odeon on 24th Dec 1980 (though we did miss the '85 tour for some reason !). Although we now both live very different lives and no longer live near to each other we still make sure to get together for every Madness concert.
You have bought us a lot of good memories over the years, thanks for them, I hope you all are enjoying it as much as us fans do and that you continue to do it for a long time yet !.
Though also being a big Beatles fan too, this year has been very expensive !!
See you at Brighton and the O2, promise I won't be grabbing anyones leg !
Sharon x

Dear Sharon
Very nice indeed I liked it going to the present day. Now who else was at this gig and what can they recall? Becuase I tell you what, I can never remember playing at the Hammersmith Palais, only the Odeon.

Young guns go for it

Hi Chris,
Any chance this program is going to be put in the M section. I don't have BBC4, as I think a lot of the international fans don't have, but we would love to watch the documentary. This would be a good place to see it. Or would there be copyright issues...
Take care.
Andre

Dear Andre
Sorry but it is BBC property and they are very hot on that - but I will ask.

hi chris
hope you are well.
ive just been listening to elvis presley sing are you lonesome tonight.on hearing the laughing version where he puts the words"do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" instead of "do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there".obviosly he and the band were fooling around and playing with words on a tour bus i just wondered if you and the band had ever done this with madness lyrics to pass the time away whilst travelling and if so what did you change

Dear Chigs
Not really Suggs and Chas are far too professional...

Question: David Gray Loves

Dear Chris,
Check out this article about David Gray:

http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/david-gray-playlist/story?id=8736581

...noting this excerpt:

At age of 9, Gray moved with his family to Wales. He began to broaden his musical palette by listening to punk, reggae and ska. One of his all-time favorites from childhood is the British band Madness. "They were my first sort of obsession," says Gray. "I was the ultimate fan. Soon as a single came out I'd buy it. I wanted them to go to No. 1."
Pretty cool, eh?
Best regards

Just a quick thanks for the tickets for the gig at the Cardiff international arena gig a few years back (in 2002?). You and the lads sent my sister 4 tickets for the gig after she told you we missed the last 10 mins of the original madstock gig. Ever since, whenever we and our kid sister (the CIA was her first ever gig- and now both sisters are fans too!) get the chance we come to a gig.

Youngest fan??

Good evening Chris,

We have all been religously watching Madness on BBC4 tonight. My three month old son has not been able to take his eyes off the TV. I think he's hooked. Could he be your youngest fan and if so, do you think we should take him to your gig at the O2 in December?

Please advise as I don't want to let the little chap down

madstock 2009

Just wanted to say I was disapointed to find there was a two tier arrangment for viewing at the gig...we got there early to get a good view to find we could get no where near the stage due to it being fenced off for 'privelidged viewing' I am unable to stand for long periods after a bad bike accident and so ended up way back where I could see little, I would also like to point out that we travelled fron Ashford Kent on the train and even although we left before your encore we only made the last train by about two minutes! Maybee the gig should have finished a little earlier? I am sure other people would have had similar problems.
Moaning aside...the atmosphere was wonderful and it was a great line up,shame it rained..
I have just watched Madness at Glastonbery on channel five and thoroughly enjoyed the programmes.
A great band and a shedful of pop classics, well done to all and thankyou for bein Madness.,,,
hope you taken the time to read this! all the best andy

Dear Andy
If you were registered disabled I'm sure we had an area for that. There was the dreaded Golden Circle which caused the restricted view, I am sorry about that crap idea it won't happen again. I'm glad you weren't in there, though sounds like it would have been even worse for you .Travel wise what can I say? We can't arrange special trains I'm sorry to say.

A change of fortunes.

Sunday 27th Sept.

I was woken early by my wife telling me she could hear someone breaking into our property, a short while later I am with the police checking for damage. Luckily they had not got in but we were a bit unnerved and were not going to get to sleep for the remainder of the night. I spent the next few hours securing the property in case another attempt would be made, it was then a dash to the train station to go from York to London.

Arriving in London we made our way to Regent Street so we could check the place out, as we did not have tickets for the arena we tried to work out the best view if watching on one of the big screens, although we were just going to end up seeing Madness on a screen for a 30min set we were happy with our lot.

Hanging around the stage before Scarlet and Viva we were approached by a guy asking if we had wristbands and if not would we like his. Being the sceptical type I tried to suss him out, he did not want anything for them because he had to leave early and wanted the wristbands to go to a true Madness fan, and as we were decked out in Madness T-shirts we must be. Thanking him we took the printed out forms and made our way to where you exchange the form for wristbands, having acquired our wristbands we made our way to the arena where we got a excellent view at the front. And to top it all off you did a full hour set, and what a great set too. We then made our way back threw the streets of London to the station and off home with all the memories of a good day.
Thank you Madness.

Dear Chris, there seems to be a massive Madness push on at the moment with books, CDs, DVDs, BBC4 take overs etc. It's great. However I won't be able to afford food at this rate. It is great though and it is nice to see all these new goodies, please don't burn youselves out though. I may save one of the books till Christmas so the wife has something left to get me. New book

Heard that there is a book being published on Madness called "Nutty Sound: The story of Madness.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nutty-Sound-Story-Madness/dp/1847726194/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c

I also saw there is a book starting publication exactly today, October 1, called "One Step Beyond."
Location really sucks for me, as I don't expect any of those books to be shipped to North America, I bet. But I could be wrong - I found The Book of Useless Information, which is published by the Useless Information Society Suggs is a part of, in the local Indigo.
They all sound really cool. And I thanked Thommo next door for signing the photo you sent me. I will do so for any other of the band who makes a page on here if they do. I hope any of your new re-released material makes it over here as well. Doubt any films will make it through, they're processed in region two format...

Dear Justin
You can probably get that book from Amazon UK, I think.

Hope you're not working yourself too hard

Dear Chrissy,
I was wondering, how many of these emails do you get on a daily/weekly basis ? Are there so many it sometimes gets to be a chore to trawl through them or are there just enough to keep you entertained ?
I find them (and some of your answers) very entertaining, so hopefully long may you continue.
I really liked Mad Micks story about him and his mate at the concert at Hammersmith Palais back in '81(posted in July) I was also there that night and have my own little story if you're interested !
Anyway, I'll leave you to rest up for the Crimbo concerts, can't wait!

PS Did you get the little cake I sent you ?

Dear Sharon
I don't get that many, maybe 5-10 a day. It depends what's going on or if we do a gig or something. At the moment there are 50 unanswered going back two days which is 25 a day I suppose.I got the cake. Very nice. We were filming an ad for O2 [the company, not the gig] and I shared it with Jim and I think Suggs had a sneaky bit. I would love to hear your story it may come in handy for a book we are putting together.

Our House - the Musical

Dear Chris and the nutty boys,

HELP!!! I’m a Drama teacher in Birmingham who, two years ago, had the joy of seeing the Rep Theatre production of ‘Our House’ (I was a new teacher when it opened in London, so couldn’t afford to see it then) – I LOVED it and saw it 6 times (twice on tour). Since then, it has been my dream to perform the show as our amateur school production. So, I was thrilled when the copyright holders contacted me in July and said the rights were on their way. I informed the pupils (who love the DVD), briefed the staff and then waited… …October, still no confirmation! Our Christmas production is in ten weeks and I’m still hoping for good news.

PLEASE! Can you help us? WE only want to put on one performance of the greatest musical every made (my official opinion) – it feels like ‘Jim’ll Fix it!’ Is there anything you and the lads can do?

Ps. You are touring in Birmingham around the time of our show – any chance of the gang popping in to us for a visit?

Thanks.
Craig J Robinson

Dear Craig
Just go ahead with it. I will forward this to our management.

One Step Beyond scooter club

Hi Chris, mate have you had any thoughts on my previous email? (scooter club formation in Belfast).
By the way, the newly announced gig on 29th December '09.... YES! you have made me the happiest Nutty Skin alive!
(Without pushing my luck too far Chris, is there even a remote chance of 'her indoors' and i meeting you lot at the gig).
I've tried without success each and every time the band has played Belfast, at Maysfield in 80s, Dundonald in the 90s and the Odyssey in more recent years...
Do you think there's a chance, without exaggeration it would mean the world to me?

Dear Colin
Go ahead make my day with the scooter club I asked the band, there was no complaints. Turn up in Belfast with the club and who knows?
CB
Thanks from Belfast part 2

Thanks for the reply CB. You've asked us to stay in touch re a possible backstage meet in Belfast. I don't want to be pestering you unnecessarily so was wondering when would be the best time to get back to you again on the matter?

PS, I haven't told Emma yet in case it doesn't happen. Fingers crossed.

All our regards, Robert (and Emma).

Dear Robert
Er,...wait and see? closer to the gig please.

Bedders?

Mr. Foreman.,
Have just glimpsed a clip of Regent Street whilst sitting in Brisbane sunshine; was Mr. Bedford at the gig at all? If not, is all well with the maestro? I drink to your health; 'tis the least I can do -
Alphonso Lamp

Dear Alphonso
He wasn't there. Nor was he in on our Australia tour this year.

Gutted

Gutted that One Step Beyond is missing some stuff on the bonus tracks - and there's room on one of the CDs for them too. Still looks like a really nice reissue aside from the MIA tracks. Hope it sounds good - this seems to be a prevailing trend again with CDs which is nice.

If they come out on vinyl would it be the straight album or would there be bonus tracks on an extra disc too?

All the best

Mike Fisher

Dear Mike
We did have some say in the matter, you know. You can't please everyone it seems.I don't know if there will be vinyl versions.

Bedders/Not Bedders

Dear Chris, who is Bedders' stand in? What other bands has said personage played/plays in? Will Bedders return for the December tour? Cheers, L.A.
Lawrence Angelow

Dear Lawrence
It's Graham Bush, who played on some tracks on Norton Folgate.

Fireball XL5

Hi CB,

Hope you and yours are ok.

Any chance you'll be playing Fireball XL5 at any of your forthcoming tour dates? I have to say it's an absolutely blinding song!

Cheers
Herbert

Not much chance. We did it a few years ago I think. Spotters at the ready...

Bedders and more

Hi !

great to see deluxe edition from One Step Beyond ! I have heard about a deluxe edition of The Liberty Of Norton Folgate in november featuring a DVD... Is it the Film of Julian temple ?

last question : why Bedders not play at the last Madness concert ?

all the best from France and thanks for your words about the Madness tribute Album.

JP

Dear Jean Pierre
Yes it is the Hackney film with an album thrown in. The tribute album is great I really like a lot of the songs. Par example: Los Palmas 7 is brilliant, a really good feel.
CB
Many thanks to you all

It's me again Chris. Justed wanted to say many thanks for the great videos and the great music. I recieved Total Madness and played the CD at work last Friday, at our Friday's drink. I work for the UN (OPCW) in Den Haag and I have colleagues from all over the world and by golly some of them don't know Madness, but they know the songs. The mind boggles
Again I can't stop thanking you all for 30 years of great music. I feel like a stalker, but luckily only a Chris's cupboard kind... ;)

Belfast Concert

hi Chris,

i found out last week that your good selves are coming to Belfast to plat @ the Odessey Arena.

Local radio had informed me.
so..as i waited to hear from the offical camp, i waited & still heard nothin!

on looking on the Maddie offical site, true enough, on the gigs page theres the listing for the Belfast gig.

Iwudda thought the belfast gig should get the same front page announcement as the O2 on your madspace & offical site, plus maybe a blog email wouldn't go amiss!

i'm not complaining....(or am i)
its just i want as many to know about the gig, so it willbe just as a great concert as it was in 2007..

many thanks
stay nutty
Birchy

Dear Birchy
The O2 is in London, our hometown and a bigger venue. What's the prob? you heard about the gig, on the radio, then looked and it was on the site. That's why it says gigs at the top of the page. I have had no such comments from all the other areas we are plying in such as Bournemouth which also didn't get big headline news. treatment.Subscribe to the newsletter.
