new album

What are the chances of the cd’s from the vinyl boxset getting a separate release…I would give my right nut for the cd’s but have no need for the vinyl…also, any reason for the delay in the latest reissue

I would like to do this one day. The latest re issue I suppose you are referring to is Mad not Mad? I think it should be out by now..

    Very well spotted.

Interestingly when I converted it to an MP3 file on I Tunes, the album versions had (1999 digital remaster) in brackets and all the add-ons had (2010 digital remaster). I have to say, I can’t tell any difference between either.

That’s true Julie. And I think the songs are good but the production killed most of them. Just replayed the singles on Disc 3, and all of them are great singles and if pushed, most of them would be in the top half of my favourites, particulary Uncle Sam, The Sweetest Girl and Ghost Train.

I know that the split came later in 1986 because I worked in the industry at the time, but Mike leaving, the release of Mad Not Mad and the dissolution seemed like two weeks apart.

this album was great and they didnt split just after it was released it was the next year-I remember it well, some great tunes on this album and i play it alot more than wonderful!
each to their own if everyone liked the same thing would be a boring world.

Received today. Disc 1 is the original album with remixes of Yesterday’s Men, Uncle Sam, Sweetest Girl & the single Waiting For the Ghost Train.

Disc 2 are B sides, including All I Knew, Please Don’t Go, Inanity Over Christmas, Jennie, Call Me, Maybe In Another Life and various different versions of YM, SG and US.

Disc 3 has promo videos of The four singles referred to above, performance of YM on Wogan, US on TOTP, Time and Burning the Boats on Whistle Test. YM, US, I’ll Compete and Time live at The Hammersmith Odeon on New Years Eve 1985, and finally Waiting For The Ghost Train on TOTP.

Phill Jupitus does the sleeve notes.

Kudos to EMI(I think)because the format of the remasters is the same as those which have been released before.

I bought this album on vinyl on it’s release date, and with due respect to the 6 guys in the band, the ghost of Mike Barson suffocates the life out of this record and it’s a shame because as Jupitus says, the production of this record is its downfall. I remember being pretty unhappy about it because I thought the group had proven their track record as more than a jaunty vaudeville singles band, and a truly record was coming from them. Of course, what we all knew what the band were capable of but not that it was coming in 1998 with Wonderful, and then with BELLS ON with Norton Folgate.

The innner sleeve photos on this CD brought back some memories. Chas and Suggs in comtemplation by the piano, Dan and Mark looking bored and then, the Nutty duo themselves, CJ Foreman with his “long hair” moment and Kix with his pony-tail.

I actually thought this was it for the band, and the split soon after the release of this record came as no surprise, and sad because there was so much left to give.

For those that are looking for the Mad Not Mad re-issue, HMV online are saying that it is out today 4th October. The polished turd (as Suggs allegedly called it) has been released in a three CD set. Their price is £8.99.
